Shun Dependency on uncle, use your talents – Bishop Onaga admonishes ESUT Students

By Eze Onyinyechi

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Valentine Onaga has admonished students and indeed youths in Nigeria to shun dependency on their uncles or relative but rather use their talents to pursue their dreams and aspirations in life.

Bishop Onaga gave the advice at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu during the thanksgiving Mass on Sunday to mark the successful end of the 19th Convocation Ceremonies of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT

The Bishop who asserted that every individual is blessed by God with talent emphasized that the problem is not having talent but making using of it.

“My uncle is this, my uncle is that, what are you?  Shun dependency syndrome. Your talent is enough for your salvation. There is no great talent without willpower. Each and everyone is richly endowed. The emphasis is not on the talent you have but how you use it. You have to make an effort by dint of hard work. Everyone uses his talent to serve humanity. Do not use your talent to hurt your neighbor.

He condemned laziness and low life mentality among the youths warning that a lazy mind will not go to heaven

ESUT VC, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie watches in admiration as the Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah hands Certificate of Merit to the Best Graduating Student, Ikeonyia Barbara Ijeoma during the convocation on Saturday

“Stop blaming people for your laziness. A lazy man will not go to heaven. No talent is more important than the other.

“The idea of low life should be condemned as every talent is important. Let us use our talent for the service of others.”

The clergy man noted that university is where talent is nurtured and groomed and prayed to God to help students and youths use their talents well.

The 19th Convocation Ceremony was held on Saturday, November 18, 2023.

In attendance during the thanksgiving were the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, his management team, members of the staff and students of the institution.
