Kwara State University deputy bursar, three others die watching Nigeria Vs South Africa AFCON semi-final

The Deputy Bursar, Kwara State University (KWASU), Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, died while watching the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and South on Wednesday night in Ivory Coast

Nigeria and rivals South Africa squared up for a place in the AFCON 2023 final on Wednesday with the Super Eagles taking the lead in the second half through a penalty.

However, on the dot of 90 minute, the Bafana Bafana restored parity through spot kick to drag the match into extra time.

Although Nigeria eventually claimed a 4-2 penalty shootout victory, some Nigerians lost their lives as a result of the match.

“The Deputy Bursar watched the Nigeria/South Africa match from the beginning till the end of the extra time, till it was time for penalty shootout.

“He complained that he was feeling dizzy, so he said he needed to go back home and rest not knowing that his BP had gone up.

“On getting home, he collapsed and was rushed to a private hospital in Sango but he was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Before he could be attended to, he died” an eyewitness narrated.

Mr Abdullahi’s death brings to four the number of Nigerians who lost their lives as a result of the football match.

Others were a former federal lawmaker in Delta State, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; a member of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Adamawa State identified as Samuel and a business man, High Chief Osondu Nwoye from Anambra, in Abidjan also died while watch the match yesterday

Nigeria will battle Ivory Coast in the final match on Sunday by 9pm Nigeria time.
