The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, (NBC) stated that obtaining approval remains the only hindrance for the ESUT Radio to return to transmission.
The South East Zonal Director of the Commission, Mrs Ijeoma Obodo, gave the condition on Wednesday when she and her team visited the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie in his office.
Mrs Obodo who was accompanied on the visit by the Principal Monitoring Officer, Enugu Zone, NBC, Cyril Udeorah, inspected ESUT Radio office at the old Afrhub building.
She expressed delight over the magnitude of work the University management has out in reestablishing the FM station. Although she pointed out fees things that should be fixed, Mr Obodo gave a condition for the retransmission of the radio station.
“I am no doubt, impressed with the level of work the University has put in here. NBC is fully committed to restoring the radio station back on air.
“Approval for your retransmission will be granted as soon as the request for such gets to our office. This is not just a community radio, it is also a trainee station meant to groom the students particularly in Mass Communication department and offer them first hand practical orientation in broadcasting,” she stated.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, reassured the Commission of his readiness to do all that would be required to get the station back on air.
He noted that as a former staff adviser of Lion FM, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he knows the importance of Campus Radio as a version of Community Radio and will stop at nothing to build an ESUT Radio that stand the taste of time.
He expressed confidence that high quality graduates that are marketable and highly sought-after would be produced with radio station in place.
“I am glad to have you in my office because we want you to help us give our students the best by making it possible for our radio station to be back on air.”
“As you can see, the equipment is almost ready and waiting for approval from your office to kickstart.”
“We have made provisions for 24/7 power supply with the acquisition of Lista, an ultra-modern fuel-powered generator, a 10kva inverter, as well as lights from the national grid.”
ESUT Radio transmits 106.5 FM.
