By Amaechi Agbo, Agbani
A two-day capacity building training workshop for frontline staff in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, will commence today, Thursday 19th through Friday 20th September, 2024.
The training, exclusively designed for top echelon of the university management will hold at the Esther Hall, Admiral Resort Hotel, Chaka Crescent off Nza Street, Independence Layout, Enugu starting from 9am each day.
The training is coming few weeks after the management of the university conducted elections in 13 out of 14 faculties, appointed heads of departments and directors. The management reshuffling is expected to reposition the university and upscale her national and global trajectory.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG) Professor Chidiebere Onyia will be the Special guest and lead speaker.
The Chief host and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie will deliver the Keynote Address while Plenary Speakers include the University Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu; The Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Chike Anibeze; Dr. Obiora Madu as well as Barr. Richard Agu.
Speaking on the rationale for organising the workshop, the Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu explained that the training would expose the affected staff on university management and leadership expected of them.
While enumerating those to attend the training to include the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and the Acting Librarian, the Provost and all the elected deans of Faculties and appointed Heads of departments and directors, labour chairmen, among others but stated explicitly that junior staff are not part of the training.
Essence of the training
Well the new session is starting on October 7th and the training is going to be on the 19th and 20th at Admiral Resort Hotel, Chaka Street, Independence Layout Enugu. It is specifically for the management of the university, that is, the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and the Acting Librarian, Provost, all the elected deans of faculties, appointed heads of departments and directors.
Also to attend the training are the labour leaders, that’s the chairmen of ASUU, NAAT, SANU and NASU; faculty finance officers, faculty officers, deputy registrars, deputy bursars. These are the people that will attend the workshop.
The aim is to ensure that these newly elected or appointed people are kept abreast with the schedule of duties in their new assignments. It will equally explain issues that many people don’t know concerning the running of the university. We are going to have experts that are going to deal with issues concerning staff welfare, registration of students, administration of departments, how departments and faculties are supposed to be administered.
Partnership and Certificate presentation
Certificate willbegiventoparticipantswhich is very critical and in subsequent appraisals, we would be demanding for such certificates. Have you ever attended university wide courses or university wide trainings? We signed MOU with Multi Mix Academy who will also present certificate to the participants to those people who underwent 6 weeks training in Logistics and Chain management.
The Secretary to Enugu State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia is a special guest of honour and we are going to be enriched by his wealth of knowledge in University Administration. Together with the Vice-Chancellor and erudite Professor, a full bright scholar will be there and the Registrar will equally be making his speech during plenary session and then we have the managing director of Multi Mix, Dr. Obiora Mmadu, he is going to talk on soft skill management in University Administration. It is a workshop that is fully packed and after the training, the university will change for better prosperity.
First Training under new management
Yes, of course since the inception of this administration, you have noticed so many changes. It’s not that those things are not there, the issue is having the political will to implement what is there just like the Vice-Chancellor used to say that regularisation, confirmation, etc are all there and it’s only that people don’t know that you have to be regularised before you are confirmed. Definitely the training will expose many things and I’m very happy that many people will benefit from the training.
Will junior staff be allowed to attend?
No, it is specifically meant for principal assistant Registrars and above, CEOs, Faculty finance officers and then faculty officers. There will be a period for those from senior assistant Registrars down the line but this one is principally for senior management cadre in the university. After the training, they now go to their respective units to disseminate the information and et the knowledge trickle down.
