ESUT Convocation: Engineering Faculty Wins Convocation Inter-Faculty Debate, SUG Honours Student Leaders

Agbani-Enugu – Ahead of the 21st Convocation Ceremony of ESUT on Saturday, the Faculty of Engineering has emerged winner of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Inter-Faculty Debate with 58 points. 

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences came second with 55 points, while the Faculty of Law secured third position.

The event, organised by the SUG Secretary-General, Comr. Raphael Okeke, was held at the Julius Onah Auditorium, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

In attendance were the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ifeoma Okwo; the Associate Dean of Student Affairs; the Director of Research and Innovation, Prof. Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe; the Acting SUG President, Faustina Chizaram Nwodo (Zara); and the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Enugu State Chapter, Comr. Okeke Kelvin Chekwube, among other dignitaries.

The programme drew a large turnout of students as well as executives of the NANS Enugu State Chapter, who attended to observe and support the participants.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe emphasised that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to stay, stressing that the responsibility lies with students to use it productively and ethically.

In an interview with ESUT Monitor Newspaper, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ifeoma Okwo, stated that AI is beneficial but should not replace human effort. According to her, “We should use AI to support our work, to complement what we already have, and not rely on it entirely.”

As part of the ceremony, the SUG executives presented awards to the 2024/2025 student leaders who are graduating, in recognition of their service, commitment, and contributions to student development.

The audience was thrilled by an energetic dance performance, which became one of the highlights of the event. The atmosphere became even more lively when Prof. Ifeoma Okwo and Prof. Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe joined the dancers on stage, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
