Faculty of Law ESUT Holds Orientation for Fresh Students, Emphasizes Professional Excellence

The Faculty of Law, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), on Monday, 10th February 2026, organized orientation programme for newly admitted law students at the Ikechukwu Onunwa, Moot Court Complex, ESUT, Agbani. The event was aimed at formally welcoming fresh students into the faculty and acquainting them with the demands, ethics, and culture of legal education.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer by Dr. Kingsley Edeh, a senior staff of the Faculty. This was followed by opening remarks and a welcome address by the Acting Dean of the Faculty , Rev. Sr Dr Maria Chigozie Onegubalam, PhD, who congratulated the fresh students on their admission into the prestigious Faculty of Law.

She described the study of law as demanding but rewarding and urged the students to uphold discipline, integrity, and commitment throughout their academic journey.

The President of the Law Students’ Association (LAWSA), Mr. Ahannonu Uchechukwu, in his welcome address, encouraged the fresh students to remain focused, hardworking, and united, while reminding them of the Faculty’s record of producing reputable legal practitioners within and outside Nigeria.

Speaking on Faculty Officers’ responsibilities in fresh students’ registration and other administrative functions, the Faculty Officer, Mr. Nnaemeka Nwodo, explained the procedures involved in registration and documentation, stressing the importance of compliance with university and faculty regulations.

A lecture on character formation and examinations malpractice was delivered by Prof. Osita Ogbu, a Senior Professor in the Faculty. He cautioned students against examination misconduct and unethical behaviour, emphasizing that integrity is the foundation of the legal profession.

On the topic of professional discipline and dress code, Dr C. J. Nwabueze, one of the Lecturers in the faculty, highlighted the importance of decent appearance and ethical conduct, noting that law students are expected to reflect the dignity of the legal profession at all times.

The issue of students’ academic and social environment was addressed by Barr. Henrietta Agbowo-Egbo, one of the Lecturers, who spoke on “The Law Student and His/Her Environment.” She encouraged students to cultivate a positive intellectual environment and healthy peer relationships.

Further presentations were made by Barr. J. N. Ugwu, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty, who spoke on academic advisers, online course registration, and signing of course forms, and Prof. Charles Aduaka, a Professor in the Faculty of Law, who addressed issues relating to approved fees, book purchases, and the university bookshop.

Practical legal training was highlighted by Dr. Chijioke Uzoma Agbo, PhD, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, who spoke on law clinic and mooting, stressing their importance in exposing students to practical aspects of legal practice. Similarly, Barr. Okey Ani S., the Law Librarian, educated students on the effective use of the law library for legal research and scholarship.

The programme ended with a congratulatory message by Prof. Agu Gab Agu, a Professor in the Faculty, and a closing prayer by Hon. Obinna Okenwa, a legal practitioner and stakeholder of the Faculty.

The orientation successfully equipped fresh students with essential information on academic expectations, professional conduct, and institutional procedures, setting a solid foundation for their journey in the legal profession.
