Determined to put into check reoccurring issue of insecurity on campus, the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT is planning to install 2000 street lights across all the major roads on campus as well as closed-circuit television, CCTV cameras.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office, noted that insecurity is the major challenge the university is facing, hence the need for the installations to protect the institution’s properties.
Attributing the menace to lack of perimeter fencing, the VC noted that installation of the 2000 street lights with CCTV will help to keep in check, the activities of the men of the underworld
“The greatest challenges we are having in ESUT, one of them is insecurity. In the sense that we are not enjoying the benefits of having perimeter fencing, and because of that, every day we are struggling with bandits over our properties.
“You see vandalization taking place every day. If you try replacing those equipment, they come back again. With lighting, we can help to build some cameras, so that we can detect when the bandits are coming to loot our properties.
“So, we are dreaming to have ESUT fenced and dreaming to have up to 2000 solar street lights everywhere,” he said.
The VC lauded the Honourable member representing Nkanu East and Nkanu West at the House of Representatives, Hon Pharm. Nnolim Nnaji for donating 50 solar powered street lights to provide security and illumination within the newly built Barr Dr Ndubuisi Mbah Multi-purpose Auditorium and described the gesture as a manifestation of the managements drive in partnering with the outsiders to reposition the school.
it could be recalled that Hon Pharmacist Nnolim Nnaji on Friday, January 17, donated 50 street lights to the university which has been installed at the Barr Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Multipurpose Auditorium.
