The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev Calistus Onaga on Tuesday paid a pastoral visit to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT Catholic Community where he dedicated the newly built Chapel Of Perpetual Adoration built by the St Albert De Great Catholic Community and also administered the sacrament of Confirmation on 232 faithful.

Bishop Onaga who officiated the Mass during the visit, commended the ESUT Management for its approach in eradicating cultism and appreciated them for donating expanse of land for the Catholic Church in the university.

The Bishop and leadership of ESUT Catholic Community after the deduction

The clergy who frowned at the misuse of Artificial Intelligence as a component of effective research and scholarship, warned students to stay away from making AI to be their master

The Catholic Bishop who predicted that the future of research outputs in tertiary institutions would be bleak in no distant time, stated that it was abnormal to abandon human intelligence for the unnatural one.

“It is unnatural that AI is taking over human intelligence. We are aware that some lecturers and students don’t embark on researches again because they rely on AI. That is why we cry for the future in the next five years. We may not be able to find people in the academic institutions who can add one plus one to give them two without relying on AI for the answer. They would likely go and copy it out on AI. If you are a lecturer and you are promoting the use of AI over human intelligence, you are one of those digging the grave for development in this society,” he cried out.

The Bishop who equally dedicated the magnificent and newly built Chapel of Perpetual Adoration, and equally administered the Sacrament of Confirmation on 250 faithfuls during his Pastoral Visit, insisted that AI was meant to complement human intelligence, not to replace it.

The Bishop who was accompanied to the Pastoral Visit by 40 priests, enjoined the congregation to embrace the virtue of hard work, urging the students to equally “burn midnight candles,” in order to distinguish themselves in their respective walks of life.

Presentation of gift by the ESUT Management led by the VC

“For you to succeed, you must burn your candles, you must be a bit mad to achieve extraordinary feats, because while other people will be sleeping , you will be awake learning. You cannot be considered extraordinary if you fail to work very hard to attain” he said.

However, he urged the congregation not to rely totally on their strength but to work and pray to God for guidance and blessings.

While welcoming the Bishop to the University, the ESUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, stated that the newly dedicated Chapel of Perpetual Adoration of the St. Albert the Great Chaplaincy in the University would be a source of blessings from God on the staff and students of the University.

He equally harped on Ecumenism, assuring that the Catholic community in the University would continue to grow owing to JAMB’s increment of admission quota for ESUT.

He stated that the University would establish security control room and mount solar street lights to eliminate dark spots and reduce crime to the barest minimum in the University.

Also, in his address, the Chairman, ESUT Catholic Community, Prof. Chike Anibeze, while welcoming the Bishop, stated that his visit and the completion of the Chapel were testaments to God’s faithfulness demonstrated through fruits of committed pastoral leadership in the University.

Official blessing and dedication of the Chapel

While thanking the Catholic Community for their donations despite the present economic challenges, he equally lauded the support of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Okolie, to the Chaplaincy, stating that he had remained committed to the growth of faith in order to shape the staff and students of the University in moral uprightness.

He equally lauded the ESUT Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Valentine Ozono, for his life of service, sacrifice and his commitment to the growth of faith in the University community, which he said, have continued to inspire the community to encounter Jesus Christ on a daily basis.

While welcoming the Bishop, the ESUT Chaplain, Rev Fr Ozono, said his Pastoral Visit had inflamed the faith of the Catholic Community in ESUT.

He thanked all the donors, stating that the Chapel project would have failed without their supports. He equally lauded the administrative strides of the current management of the University especially in infrastructure upgrades, prompt payment of staff salaries, liquidation of inherited debts and establishment of innovation hub to equip students with digital skills in the University.

Enugu — In a boost to sustainable campus infrastructure and enhancement of
learning and research, the Vice-Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has officially commissioned a brand new 6.0KVA Solar Power Inverter System project donated to the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The eco-friendly power installation was funded and donated entirely by the ESUT Chemical Engineering Class of 1999 as a giving-back initiative to mark over two decades since their graduation.

The newly installed solar energy system is designed to provide uninterrupted power to the department’s critical infrastructure, including laboratories, lecture rooms, and staff offices.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held on Thursday at the main Campus, Prof Okolie expressed immense gratitude to the alumni and  praised their foresight in choosing renewable energy, noting that it directly aligns with the university’s transition toward smart, sustainable campus solutions.

The official Commissioning

“This donation is a shining example of alumni responsibility,” the VC stated. “By ensuring constant power supply to the Chemical Engineering department, our researchers and students can now conduct experiments and attend lectures without the disruption of power outages.”

The VC while disclosing that the university doesn’t owe the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company a dime on electricity bill, also used the occasion to apologise, on behalf of the university, to any of the graduates who were wrongly treated while they were undergraduates.

“Let me state it here that the university is not owing EEDC a dime. We pay our bills as and when due, both here and in the College. Unfortunately, we don’t get service for our payment and this is why your intervention is timely.

“I also want to apologise to the graduates, your 1999 set who might have been aggrieved as a result of how they were treated while they were undergraduates. Please we ask for your forgiveness. I am also giving them assurance that the system has changed because we have sanitised the university. Once we get reports of unethical conduct by any staff, such person is gone. We have documents of those who have left the university on this regard” the VC said.

Earlier in her opening address, the Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, Associate Professor Ebere Ejikeme, appreciated the management for its unwavering support and expressed deep gratitude to the Class of 1999 for coming to the rescue of the department.

“I stand here to thank the management led by the VC for your continued support and providing me with the opportunity to contribute my little quota to the growth of the university. To my adorable Class of 1999 graduates of this great department, I lack words to express my feelings.

ESUT VC with Class of 1999 President, Engr Rita Offor

In the process of getting sponsors for this project, I contacted many sets but I was not successful. When I contacted the set through their president, she told me ‘we shall see what we can do’, and today, they have built this great legacy for the department. Thank you,” she said.

In her remarks, the President, Class of 1999 Graduates of Chemical Engineering Department, ESUT, Engr. Rita Offor said the project represents the collective bond of the donors and expressed willingness to continue to support the department in particular and the university in general

VC with HOD, Assoc Prof Ejikeme

“Today is more than just the unveiling of a solar energy system; it is the celebration of a journey that began decades ago. A few years ago, as we reflected on our journey and our roots, we asked ourselves an important question: ‘How can we give back to the department that helped shape our future?’

“The answer brought us here today.
We recognized that stable electricity is essential for quality learning, innovation, research, and technological advancement. From that shared vision came the idea of this Solar Power Project—a project designed not only to provide reliable power, but also to inspire future engineers toward green and sustainable energy solutions.

“We sincerely appreciate the leadership of the Head of Department and university management for partnering with us and supporting the successful execution of this project. We hope to sustain the support.

“To the students, this project is dedicated to you. We hope it enhances your learning environment, supports your academic pursuits, and remind you that you too have the power to create positive change wherever you find yourselves in the future.

“As we handover and commission this Solar Power Project today, may it symbolize light, innovation, sustainability, may it power learning, inspire innovation, and illuminate greatness,” she said

ESUT Management with Class of 1999 Set

In his address, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof Thompson Chime, lauded the innovative leadership of the ESUT Management as well as the administrative capacity of the HOD, in championing innovations.

He appreciated the donors and and urged the staff and students to make best use of the project.

Representatives of the Class of 1999 who spoke with ESUT Monitor during the handover ceremony, stated that the gesture was born out of a collective desire to solve pressing infrastructure challenges and give back to the department that shaped their professional careers.

Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd has officially flagged off the construction of its new “Wonderland Estate” in Emene, with promises of affordable, mortgage-friendly housing and a modern eco-friendly environment designed to redefine luxury living in Enugu State.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday, the Managing Director of the company, Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel, said the project was designed to bridge the housing gap while providing residents with comfort, accessibility, and world-class recreational facilities.

According to him, the estate stands out because of its strong environmental focus, revealing that 25 percent of the entire land space has been dedicated to green areas and recreational development.

“Powell is known for having very affordable real estate products. This is not the first of its kind that we are doing. Every estate we’ve done in the past is usually within a reasonable price range so that it is reachable,” he said.

“What makes this estate stand out is the fact that we are giving out 25 percent of our entire land acquisition here to green areas. We are dedicating it to greenery. There will be enough plants and trees around to make the place habitable and comfortable for occupants.”

The developer disclosed that the estate would feature what he described as the first “Wonderland Leisure Park” in the area, complete with a five-star hotel, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and several recreational facilities aimed at attracting families and visitors.

“We are expecting the first of its kind — a Wonderland Leisure Park — which would have a lot of recreational facilities. It will have a five-star hotel, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and lots of amazing features that will bring families from outside this environment to relax and have fun,” he added.

Emmanuel further revealed that the project is strategically located close to key landmarks, including the airport and Godfrey Okoye University.

“This estate is just about a 15-minute drive from the airport flyover. From here to Godfrey Okoye University is about 10 minutes, while the airport is roughly 12 minutes away,” he stated.

He also noted that with the addition of Wonderland Estate, the company now has 14 estates across Enugu State.

Former Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, who attended the event, commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention in addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit.

“It is critical that the housing gap be bridged. In those days, one of the most important goals of civil servants and workers was to own a house. But because of the economic downturn, it now appears like a dream that may never come true,” Nebo said.

“With the kind of mortgage-friendly estates Powell develops, and with this Wonderland Smart City, it is going to be easier for people to acquire homes. This is a dream come true in a sense.”

Also speaking, Nollywood actress and Powell Homes brand ambassador, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as “Mama G,” urged residents and investors to take advantage of the opportunity, assuring them of the credibility of the project.

“You have nothing to fear. The investment is real. With Powell, there is nothing to fear,” she said.

“We should thank God that we have a young man like this who is not just looking at money but at the prosperity of his people and how to make them comfortable. You have every reason to come here and invest. It is cheap.”

Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Chibiko Onyeledo, also praised the project, noting that it would help address the country’s estimated housing deficit.

“Powell is taking a big stride in helping to bridge the housing gap in this nation. What is attractive here is the paperwork. This place has a Certificate of Occupancy. It is a registered estate without encumbrances,” he said.

“I also like the green aspect of this project. To live within greenery is fantastic, and I encourage it.”

The event attracted stakeholders from the real estate, religious, entertainment, and business sectors, with many describing the project as a significant boost to urban development and housing accessibility in Enugu State.

Ebeano City — The Faculty of Biological Sciences at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) on Thursday held a colourful sent-forth ceremony to celebrate the distinguished career of its pioneer Dean, Professor Emmanuel Ogu, as he bowed out of service after decades of meritorious service to humanity

The ceremony held in the Faculty Auditorium, drew the University Management, Colleagues, Staff, students, from within and outside the university who gathered to celebrate a career defined by extensive research, dedicated mentorship, and a deep commitment to the advancement of biological sciences in Nigeria.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha, in his message of goodwill extolled the leadership and dignity in service of the pioneer Dean, describing him as a man who served humanity in humility.

Prof OKolie revealed the University’s intention to re-engage Professor Ogu following his mandatory six-month post-retirement break, citing his invaluable expertise.

“Prof Ogu is a man who served this university with everything in him. We are proud of him and that was why he headed two faculties as dean. Responsibilities he discharged with fear of God and commitment to humanity.

” Today, we are not celebrating his retirement, we are celebrating his legacy, the ideals he is leaving behind. One thing is certain, the erudite schooler has etched his name in the history book of humanity and today we honour him,” the VC said.

Professor Ogu popularly known as “Onye isi Oche” meaning “Chairman” holds a unique place in ESUT’s history. Having previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences for over five years (covering two tenures plus the COVID-19 extension), he became the first Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences following the split of the Natural Sciences department into Physical and Biological faculties.

Speaking with the ESUT Monitor Newspaper, the Professor of Brewing Science and Technology expressed gratitude to the university management, staff and students of both the old and new Faculties for their support.

He expressed his willingness to continue to serve humanity in any other endeavours if called upon adding that he will always be a part of the university that made him

“First and foremost, I want to appreciate God for His grace and favour upon me in guiding me through my service years in ESUT.

“To the Vice-Chancelor and his management team, the students and staff of both FANS and now FBS, I thank you for your loyalty. It was Indeed years of service in gratitude. I am eternally grateful to my family for their support in these years. To the students that I was privileged to teach, it’s an honour and my prayer is that the child should be greater than the parents.” he said.

Several speakers including students expressed appreciation to the retiree and thanked him for his years of service to the faculty and the university.

Professor Ogu who retired on April 10, 2026 handed over the administration of the Faculty to the then Associate Dean, Dear Peter Eze who is now the Acting Dean.

While his formal classroom days have come to an end, Professor Ogu is expected to remain a vital resource for the scientific community.

During his retirement address, he encouraged the younger generation of researchers to remain resilient despite the challenges facing the Nigerian education sector.

His retirement marks a transition for the Faculty of Biological Sciences, which now looks to build upon the foundation laid by one of its most respected veterans. As he steps into this new phase, the ESUT community honors a man whose career was dedicated to the pursuit of truth through the lens of the natural world.

A former Minister of Aviation and Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Chief Osita Chidoka, left participants at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) stunned during the University’s 2nd Distinguished Personality Lecture, at the Peter Nduibisi Mbah Multi-purpose Auditorium, when he revealed that his academic journey almost ended in a disgraceful expulsion.

Chief Chidioka while calling for political re engineering as the panecea for Nigeria’s leadership challenges, also unveiled “Mekaria” his new leadership philosophy for African leaders

Whilst delivering his lecture on rebuilding Nigeria political structure, he took went down memory lane at the University of Nigeria, Nsuka, while he was a fervent student leader and ally of the active member of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, as they partook in a nationwide protest against the illegal proceedings following the annulment of the june 12 general elections, under the Babaginda regime.

“Back then, the students unionism was about the welfare of the students. We were thorns in the flesh of the government”, said Chief Chidoka. While the risk of expulsion was real, the Lecturer argued that the turbulent experience prepared him for his career, where he became a Personal Assistant to a minister at age 27 and Nigeria’s youngest ever serving Corps Marshal by 35.

Unveiling a new leadership philosophy for the continent, Chief Chidioka introduced “Mekaria”- an igbo concept meaning, “ to do better”. He challenged the “Culture of Alibi”, which is the habit of using past, systemic corruption practices as an excuse for failure. Instead he proposed a data driven “Operating System” for the country, which shifts focus from “inputs” to “outcomes”. Using real-time data to identify and solve problems instantly. and a relentless drive for excellence that rejects the status quo.

He expressed concern on Nigeria’s growing political indifference by the new generation of young Nigerians who have consistently shown non active participation in national political issues particularly in holding their leaders accountable.

“Nigeria’s population would hit 400 million by 2050, and there are high concerns for Southeast, concerning land scarcity and erosion.

“If you do not participate, your future is bleak”, he warned, pointing out the current Governor of Enugu state who won by a slim margin of 399 votes to explain the importance of voting during election.

“Participation is not just voting; it is the daily unglamorous act of insisting that institutions are accountable to you. If you believe that your vote does count, why then do the political actors pay to buy your vote? he queried.

“Your future will not be determined by just waiting for somebody to take your course, It will be shapped by your capability to say, ‘This is my destination, and I want to get there”. he concluded.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, who led other Principal and key functionaries of the University on project inspection at the permanent site of the University at Ebeano City, Enugu State, was shocked to discover that neither the contractors nor their workers were on the sites of the aforementioned projects.

While addressing journalists at the perimeter fencing site contracted to the City Concrete Limited, the Professor Okolie, bemoaned lack of communication between the contractor handling the project and the ESUT Management.

“ESUT Management appears to be in the dark with regards to the perimeter fencing project in the University. Nobody is telling us anything. We as Management of ESUT do not know why the contractor abandoned the site of this project, no work is going on here.

“The critical point is that it appears the work has been abandoned by the contractor. We are hopeful that the contractor should come and engage the Management of ESUT on any challenge they are having, we deserve to know the issues slowing the progress of work in this project,” he said.

The VC stated that the last formal engagement with the contractor was in February 2026 during the ground-breaking ceremony, adding that if the workers failed to return to site, the University Management would inform the appropriate authorities.

Equally, at the 1,600 capacity students hostel, the University Management expressed dissatisfaction with the state of things at the project site as no worker was seen during inspection.

The University Management therefore, called on Afri Plus Nigeria Limited (Developer) to fulfill their part of the agreement by commencing the construction of the hostel facility, stating that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, had already released the counterpart fund of N1 billion to the Developer for the project.

“We are not going to allow ESUT to be used as a demonstration site for any contractor and we made it very clear on the day of the ground-breaking ceremony that we would not take it lightly with any contractor in the University who failed to fulfill his part of Memorandum of Understanding, MoU. We have 10 months to the date of project completion and we are worried that work has not commenced” the Vice Chancellor said.

He noted that if work failed to commence as planned, the University Management would write the Developer for the reimbursement of the N1 billion counterpart fund to TETFund.

Other project sites inspected by the University Management included: The ESUT Printing Press; 600 capacity Faculty of Engineering Hall; NOCA Male Hostel; 500 capacity TETFund sponsored auditorium; and the Faculty of Social Sciences building.

In a strategic move to reposition the Faculty of Engineering at ESUT and enhance its visibility and identification, the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students’ Association (NUESA), ESUT Chapter, has unveiled new signage for the faculty.

During the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday at the Faculty Complex, the Faculty President of the association, Comr. Onuoha Chinecherem explained his motivation. He noted that what drove him to execute the signboard as his first project was his appreciation for recognition.

“The Engineering Faculty had a signboard, but I don’t think it was functional because you could pass it in broad daylight without noticing it.” he said.

“I want Engineering to be noticed; if you want to find us, you shouldn’t need anyone to lead you.”

He urged aspiring student leaders to show their capacity through tangible results. “If you are elected or appointed to any seat, I appeal to you to complete a physical project during your regime, because that defines your administration.”

The Dean of the Faculty, Engr. Prof. Thompson Chime, extolled the student executives. “The NUESA executives saw to it that this was done for the faculty. We advised and monitored them, and today we see a wonderful signpost which is worthy of emulation; it is a legacy for themselves and the faculty. We are expecting more—as Oliver Twist said, they can do even more than what they have already done. It is something spectacular.”

He urged other students to learn from the initiative. “We appreciate the effort, especially from the President. He has worked closely with us. Anyone aspiring for office must have something to offer; you don’t just aspire to a post without focus. My advice is to have focus, think out of the box, and help the students and the faculty. To be an aspirant, you must also look at your background and your academics.” he emphasized.

Also speaking, the Faculty Staff Adviser, Engr. Nevo Cornelius of the Chemical Engineering Department, expressed his pride. “I am happy today; it is a remarkable day. I thank God for the unveiling of this modern signage, one of the best in the history of ESUT.”

“My students and the Association executives have done marvelously to replace the old signboard. We are now moving into a digital and modern era.

I also thank the Faculty President, Comr. Chinecherem, because he is here to work. He assured me that his projects would be completed before the end of his tenure, and he has proven that he is here to serve and not to embezzle.” he added.
