ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM) 44th matriculation ceremony was held on the 21st of February 2025 at Prof Julius Onah Auditorium. This matriculation started with a procession of the Deans of all the four faculties, the members of the management board and the matriculating students.
ESUT College of Medicine consists of 4 faculties which includes; Clinical Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences.
The matriculating students were welcomed by an address of the Vice Chancellor of ESUT bu the Provost of the College, Prof Uchenna Ekwochi. They were voluntarily made to undergo an oat of commitment and loyalty to the school in the presence of the Provost, Deans, members of the management board of the college and their parents/guardians.
The Dean of faculty of Clinical Medicine, Prof. Umezurike Okafor gave an overview of the matriculation ceremony and highlighted many other things concerning the University to the matriculating students providing insights to why the University is notable, focusing on the academic reputation, programmes, achievements and impact on the society.
According to Prof. Ozor Ignatius, Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, he said that matriculation is an official process of admitting students into the University community which makes them legitimate students and that it is wonderful that it is a decentralized programme and the 2nd time the University is doing it. He noted that it’s been very significant and yielding fruits because it gives an opportunity for face-to-face interaction with students and their parents which has brought about massive turnup of students and parents.
The Dean of faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Dr Sylvester Nweze, said the matriculation is one of the very best because there was an interface between the parents and members of the management team which brought about questions and answers, where parents aired their views and were replied back to and students were given opportunities to give their experiences so far about the school. He also said that the decentralized system of matriculating will be more effective. It is not like a sheep without shepherd where people enter into the field without knowing the students that are matriculating and those who are not . He encouraged the fresh students to study hard and be very mindful of their mode of dressing and avoid any form of malpractice.
A parent of a matriculating student Dr. Ani Malaki who also aired his view about the matriculation said that his expectations as a parent is the same expectations of every responsible parent which is the goal of the students and that goal is to graduate with flying colors and be useful to his or herself and the society at large. He added that the University already has facilities and resources but he expects that school apply those resources judiciously.
A matriculating student, Favour Ugwuanyi from the Department of Human Anatomy said that coming to ESUT has not really been easy but she is grateful to be called a student of the University. She also complained about some challenges she has been facing since she became a student which are epileptic light, network issues and hut weather. She mentioned that her academic goals is to maintain a very good CGPA till she graduates from the school.
The matriculation was well arranged and a successful ceremony. The ceremony concluded with a sense of excitement and anticipation, as the new students embark on their academic journeys, ready to make their mark at Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

]]>The post The Life Of A Typical Class Rep in ESUT appeared first on ESUT Monitor.
]]>Before gaining admission into the prestigious Enugu State University Of Science and Technology (ESUT), I have always wished to become the class rep. Immediately I was admitted into the university, I started making moves and asking questions on how to be a class rep. I met with my HOD and the Dean of our Faculty and told them about my plans.
They were impressed at how bold I was and told me the things a class rep does.
I started acting as a class rep in Year one. As an introvert and a very shy person, it was not an easy task for me. It took me lot of courage before I was finally able to address the class without shaking. I have heard tales of being a class rep from my cousin, about how you would be hated by your mates, how you would be held responsible for any misconduct by your course-mates, how you would be known by a lot of lecturers, the constant disrespect and bullying, the post comes with; the hate and envy.
All these tales did not make me give up on my dreams of being a class representative I. believed I could do it and yesssss, I did it!!
But. There is a saying that uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. I am very conversant with the adage but not the reality as the case is now.
Sometimes it was hard. Sometimes it was easy Ị have cried, Ị have laughed, We’ve argued and we have made up. I have been misunderstood. I’ve learnt leadership first-hand. So many times, I wanted to give up but my close friends, senior colleagues and few lecturers kept encouraging me.
The accusations, most times unfounded. The name tagging all the time undeserved. The friend that all of a sudden becomes a foe for no reason explainable. But then…
Being a class rep really helped me come out of my shell. I’ve gotten to know students in different levels and departments through being a class rep, and have interacted with lecturers of high status. It’s been a great experience as it means I have a wide variety of people I can go to and ask questions!
I love adding value positively wherever I found myself. I love being a ahead, leading and motivating others to achieve a common objective. I love that each time I have something to say, my lecturers always listen to me.
Class Representative goes through a lot actually. One thing Ị have learnt is, no matter what you do in life, you cannot please everyone. Just do your thing.
On daily basis, students rely on you to confirm and sometimes reconfirm lectures that have been scheduled. Most times, if the confirmation is not fast coming, my phone would be buzzing. My WhatsApp messages and other platforms through which I could be easily communicated would generate heavy traffic. Often times, lecturers make matters worse for you because you would call and text but they would not respond, on time.
When impromptu quiz are done, I become the object of ridicule because my coursemates would assume I had the knowledge but decided to hoard it. “I go explain taya” as we say in Pidgin English
However, the joy that comes with the fact that you are adding value and making impact among your folks is enough motivation.
So the next time you see your class rep, show some reverence. To some extent, they deserve it because the truth of the matter is, It’s not easy. Looking back now, I noticed I’m no longer really an introvert as compared to how I was before coming to this school. I can now stand a crowd. Though the stage fright is still there, which is natural but not so much as I earlier feared!
I love being a class rep.

]]>The post My First Day In The University, The Fresher Tag appeared first on ESUT Monitor.
]]>On the 19th of October 2024, I began to perceive the aura of this wonderland, and of course, I was thrilled to be there on the 9th of January 2025 to witness the institution for myself. Undisputedly, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) was never eulogized excessively. Indeed, they are worth every iota of acclamation.
On that day, lectures hadn’t become intensively yet because students tend not to be in school until the following week when all the school activities would have been inaugurated properly. Obviously, there were not many people on campus, yet I felt submerged in being neglected by older students. I had an older friend who would always blitz my DM and go as far as extending the conversation in person. Everyone was still emphasizing how older students neglect and disparage new students, termed “FRESHERS.” The fear of this word stuck tightly in my brain, and I never wanted to be a victim.
This impression made me avoid speaking to anyone that day about anything. My instinct kept encouraging me that I could do everything myself, like pinpointing my faculty, locating the library, and finding other basic necessities. But not until I got lost in the vast environment did I realize my limitations. I trekked for about 20 minutes without finding a single route I recognized. At this very peak, I lost my ego, fidgeting at the same time because it was getting late. At first, I thought of hopping on a bike, but I certainly didn’t know my destination nor where I was standing at the moment. This time, I had to ask people around me for my current location. All thanks to my lucky stars, I was not neglected by the students I managed to ask, as my sentiments were glued to avoiding being addressed as a “fresher.” Perhaps I didn’t ask for directions directly from any of the students I approached.
Here’s what I did: I picked up my cell phone and called a friend who had been in the school for a while—a final-year student, to be precise. She conveyed that I should look out for a motorcyclist and hand over the phone to him after I told her my current location, aided with its description for better clarification. I did as she said, and all thanks to God, the motorcyclist was smart enough to understand everything she said to him over the call. I didn’t know what she said to him, but I had a second thought: “What if this bike man mistakenly asks me where I’m heading to since he doesn’t hear clearly?” But it wasn’t so.
I hopped on the bike, and shortly, I was set down at a popular market that I was familiar with—“EKE AGBANI.” After I made the payment, I looked around and said to myself, indeed, I’m a “FRESHER” because I realized it took the motorcyclist 2 minutes to get there, while it could be walked in a maximum duration of 5 minutes.
This incident was quite awful but not horrible. The view and bliss of the institution I dreamed of met my expectations, so I never felt too bad as a fresher.
Sincerely, I’m thrilled to be a student at ESUT.

]]>The post Prof Udeze Enjoins ESUT Students to Imbibe Ethics, Probity as their Watchword appeared first on ESUT Monitor.
]]>A professor in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Sunny Udeze has enjoined students of the university to imbibe the virtues of ethical principles and probity as they aspire to achieve their academic dreams and become successful in life.
Prof Udeze gave the advice while delivering a lecture to the first year students of Mass Communication Department, in the university on Thursday.
Professor Udeze who is a former secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ESUT Branch, as well as the current Director, General Studies in ESUT, said while analysing the topic “Ethics and Successful Studentship”, that apart from corporate organisations and professional bodies who have their ethical codes, it is important that every student should abide by the ethics of their family as well as that of the school.
He noted that ethical principles invariably promotes probity which helps the students to succeed in their academic endeavour and post school career.
”Every organisation has its ethical codes. Even, each family has its ethical codes, those behavioral attitude your parents inculcated in you as well as the ones they made you to jettison, are your family ethical code. Similarly, the university (ESUT) has its ethical codes. These are the rules that guide the conducts of the both staff and the students in the university.
“When you obersve and imbibe these ethical principles, it will enable you to live a life of honesty and probity and you will be successful in life. However, you must work hard, hardwork pays and has no substitution,” he advised.
Delivering her lecture on the topic “Course Registration, Lecture Attendance and Examination in ESUT,” Professor Obiageli Okafor implored the students on the need to ensure that they registered their courses online as and when due and attend lectures punctually.
The first female Head of Department in the department emphasized that online course registration is cardinal in the university adding that the registration, apart from payment of tuition fees, affirms student’s membership of the university.
She stressed that students who absentee themselves from lectures only to appear on examination days will have themselves to blame.
“This is a university where you are expected to be law abiding and carry out your responsibilities and obligations to the university diligently. Your online course registration is very important because it affirms your membership of the university, after payment of your prescribed fees.
“Many students don’t come to lectures but when it is examination time, you see them everywhere. I want to remind you that the 70% attendance rule which makes you eligible to sit for examination is applicable in Mass Communication Department and everywhere in the university.
“So, it is important that you take your academic programmes seriously. If there is any reason you should not attend a lecture, it is important you reach out to the lecturer in charge and register your permission, however, this should not be a habit,” Prof Okafor admonished.
The 2024 orientation programme for first year students of Mass Communication Department was held on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
