I congratulate all of you for making ESUT and your faculty proud. This good news is coming at the right time when the faculty is preparing for re-accreditation exercise.

More than five years after Covid-19 ravaged the country’s economy and leading to many deaths, Nigeria has recorded a new case of the virus in Cross River State.

Speaking at a news conference in Calabar, on Tuesday, Dr Henry Ayuk, the state’s Commissioner for Health, said the case involved a Chinese national, who worked with Lafarge and flew into the country on March 17, before taking ill.

News AGency of Nigeria reports that the commissioner stated that the Chinese’ case became worse at the medical facility of his office and had to be taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

He explained that at the UCTH, his samples were taken and all protocols followed; it was subsequently confirmed that he had symptoms of COVID-19.

“We are, however, happy to report that he is doing well,” the commissioner said.

Ayuk asserted that the ministry of health had, however, been repositioned by the current administration, to handle and manage any situation – diseases or epidemic outbreaks.

According to him, unfortunately, there have been silent infections and clear cases from time to time.

“But we are determined that for every ailment, every disease or outbreak, if it is identified here in the state, there should be no alarm.

“The state will do well in terms of surveillance or containment of an outbreak. Whatever it is, we will do our best to contain it. So, there is no alarm.

“When this case was reported in about three or four days ago, we decided to be careful to confirm and ensure that the processes involved with identifying and confirming every case of COVID-19, are duly followed.

“The protocols have been followed and confirmed that a 53-year-old Chinese who work in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state has COVID-19,” he said.

On her part, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, State Epidemiologist, announced that in response to the case, the state emergency response unit had been activated.

She, however, noted that there was currently an ongoing contact tracing and line listing of those the Chinese may have been in contact with.

While noting the last case of confirmed case of COVID-19 in Cross River to be in 2022, the epidemiologist, however, feared that the Chinese may have contacted the virus here in Nigeria.

“The incubation period for this virus is usually between two to 14 days, but the Chinese flew into Nigeria from China on March 17 and started developing the symptoms on April 10.

“This is well beyond the 14 days incubation period. Like I said, we are doing the line listing of those he may have come in contact with, as part of our containment efforts.

“We have also activated the emergency response center and deployed rapid response teams to Akamkpa, where the victim works.

“There is no way we can stop this disease, but we can stop the disease outbreak.

“It will be wrong not to contain or manage it by ensuring that people do not die,” she stated.

Similarly, Dr Yewande Olatunde, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Coordinator in Cross River, stated that the disease was still around.

“We we must explore all preventive measures to protect ourselves.” she stressed.

A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka (OFR) will deliver the 2nd edition of  Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT’s Distinguished Personality Lecture, www.esutmonitor.com can authoritatively report.

Chief Chidoka was Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation under President Goodluck Jonathan and also served as Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Under the chairmanship of the ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, the Distinguished Personality Lecture will hold on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at the Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Multi-purpose Auditorium, ESUT, Ebe-Ano City, Enugu State commencing from 10am.

Anchored on the theme: “Beyond Participation: Rebuilding Nigerian’s Political Culture for a New Generation,” Chief Chidoka will be dissecting the Nigerian political culture beclouded by growing apathy and leadership mistrust and advocates for shifting from transactional politics to a value-driven culture, prioritizing sustained civic engagement over mere voter turnout. As well as emphasize fostering institutional trust and empowering youth through economic independence and local, grassroots political organization to break cycles of apathy.

Launched in 2024, the first ESUT’s Distinguished Personality Lecture was delivered by His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on November 19, 2024 on the topic: “Experiential Learning: Building the Wealth of the Nation”

Osita Chidoka’s Profile

ESUT’s 2nd Distinguished Personality Lecturer, Chief Osita Benjamin Chidoka, a politician, public servant and administrator, was born on July 18, 1971 in Enugu State, South-East Nigeria but hails from Anambra State.

He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and also holds a Masters of Public Policy degree from the School of Public Policy at George Mason University in the United States of America. He has a Certificate in Global Strategy and Political Economy from Oxford University UK, and a Graduate Diploma in Maritime and Ports Management from the National University of Singapore.

Chief Osita Chidoka, OFR

Chidoka won the National Youth Service Corps FCT Honours Award and gained automatic employment with the Federal Capital Development Authority. As a public servant, he contributed to national development through his services as the Secretary to the National Committee for the visit of Pope John Paul II to Nigeria in 1998, which earned him a papal commendation. He also served as a member of the Committee for the Review of the Abuja Master Plan. He also led the Committee for the Drafting of Nigeria’s National Policy on Non-Motorized Forms of Transportation and was the Assistant Secretary of the Committee for the Military-Civilian Handover in 1999.

After a public sector career, Chidoka joined Mobil Producing Nigeria, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, as a senior adviser on government and business relations. In 2007, while serving in that role, President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the age of 35, making him the youngest ever to hold the position.

His leadership of the FRSC led to the transformation of the Corps into a functional lead agency for road traffic administration and safety management in the country, driven by information and communication technology. Under Osita’s leadership, FRSC built a reliable offenders’ register and database of drivers and vehicles in the country, leading to ECOWAS’ adoption of the Nigerian model in the planned Regional Vehicle Administration Information System for other West African countries.

He also introduced the fully biometric and globally acceptable driver’s license, revamped the number plate issuing system making it possible to search and identify vehicle owners on the go and linked to their vehicle insurance and built the ultra-modern number plate production facility in Abuja and Awka as well as a modern world-class Academy in Udi, Enugu State.

Chidoka was appointed the Federal Minister of Aviation on 23 July 2014. Prior to his appointment as a federal minister, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Nigeria’s Centenary Transportation Subcommittee and was later appointed Chairman of the Transportation Committee for the World Economic Forum, which was held in Nigeria in May 2014. As aviation minister, he initiated several programmes to deepen service delivery in the sector. In 2015, he initiated the “one Nigerian pilot in the cockpit” policy for all domestic commercial airlines, aimed at employing Nigerian qualified staff in the aviation industry. He was also responsible for the opening of four new terminals in Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt, which he left at over 80 per cent completion. He also awarded the contract for the runway lighting for 22 airports, including solar lights as redundancy.

With greater urge to serve his people in Anambra State, in 2017, Chidoka vied for governor of Anambra State, under the United Progressive Party, but lost to Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance. Chidoka had been one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

An award winner with multiple accolades including; Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria Merit Award on 27 November 2010, Institute of Logistics Management of Nigeria Fellowship Award in July 2011, Distinguished Alumnus Award for Good Governance and Model on Road Safety by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka on 12 November 2011, Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR by the Federal Government, Sun and Hallmark Newspapers Public Servant of the Year 2012 awards as well as Leadership Newspapers Government Agency of the Year 2012 award, Chief Osita Chidoka is a strong advocate for public policy and has written many articles, essays, and delivered speeches in many areas of public policy and safety management.

He writes a regular column, “Bridge Builder,” for Leadership Newspaper, where he outlines pragmatic ideas for good governance.

The Chairman, Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Prof Chris Ngwu on Thursday paid an unscheduled visit to the Department of Mass Communication, ESUT where he interacted with the Head of Department, Associate Prof Chidiebere Ezinwa.

An elated Prof Ngwu expressed delight that he visited his “home” describing the department as his home adding that it has always been his desire to come and continue to teach the students but regretted that the exigencies of his office made such desire impracticable.

The ENSIEC Chairman noted that he decided to visit the department where he lectured before his appointment in 2023 by the Enugu State Governor to chair the electoral body because of his love for the department – staff and students

Speaking with ESUT Monitor, the erudite scholar praised the impactful administration of Asso. Prof Ezinwa in the department and made a request to ESUT Management to help unbundle the department into a faculty.

“This is a home coming, I entered Agbai and decided to visit ESUT, particularly my department. I keep yearning to come here, if not for the exigencies of the office, I would be coming here to teach at least twice a month. But it is obvious I can’t make it. For me, it’s a home-coming. I came to see how forward my department has moved.

“I miss my students and colleagues. Sure, I miss the department.” he said

On assessment of Asso. Prof Ezinwa’s administration, Prof Ngwu commended his effort and described him as a “digital HOD”

“The current HOD is digital. When I did mine, I was thinking I was digital, I never knew I was just a little away from analogue. This is a digital HOD, he has transformed the department from what I have seen so far. He has brought in sanity in the department, he is doing wonderfully well.

“So far so good, he is trying his best, of course nobody is perfect. But he should ensure that light is restored, make the department lively so that our studios will be functional. I yearn to be tuning in to the ESUT Radio, to listen to it because as HOD, I brought the licence. It was functional before it was burnt in Enugu which is unfortunate.

“Then he should struggle to get us unbundled, we really need that,” he said.

The ENSIEC Chairman further informed ESUT Monitor that the 2026 Council Elections in Enugu State will hold on September 26

As staff and students of the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) continue to yearn for the unbundling of the department into a faculty, the Vice- Chancellor of the university, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has offered explanation on why the management is yet to implement the approval for the unbundling

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, the VC said apart from Mass Communication, the Department of Architecture also got approval for unbundling but regretted that the management is limited by funding to embark on the projects.

While describing Mass Communication as a pivotal department with potential to excel as a faculty with six departments, the VC said the funding for takeoff is critical because apart from providing the infrastructure, manpower will also be needed to management the faculty

“Mass Communication got their approval for unbundling about six years ago. It should have multiple departments within the Faculty of Mass Communication, about six, if I’m right, between four to six. Their own was the earliest approval. We have the intention to unbundle but we don’t have the financial capacity to embark on it now. We have not done the unbundling because inadequate funding.

“Mass Communication has the potential to flourish as a faculty with six departments but the funding for takeoff is enormous. Both infrastructure and staffing are key components that must be factored in and right now, we don’t have them. But we are losing sleep over it,” the VC told ESUT Monitor

He noted that the management is keen in expanding the university adding that “Architecture is begging us for a faculty, and it has been approved by the regulatory body that it should be a distinct faculty instead of a department. It should be a faculty with about six departments.  We are looking into all these but the issue is that when you try to solve one problem, several other problems will spring up. However, we are not deterred. If we have the right resources today, we will unbundle Mass Communication and Architectures without delay.”

ENUGU—-A professor of Economics at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Nicholas Attamah, has identified economic stagnation, capital flight and weak institutions as consequences of deep-rooted corrupt practices in Nigeria.

Professor Attamah stated that the spread of corruption in Nigeria has done a lot of damages to the nation’s economic activities, adding that efforts by the governments to eradicate the monster from the public service over the years have been unsuccessful.

He made the disclosure weekend, while presenting the 56th inaugural lecture of ESUT titled “Navigating the Moral Maze: Wealth Creation and Ethical Conduct in a Corrupt Public Sector.” He further said that due to the culture of corrupt practices in Nigeria such as bribery, embezzlement, money laundering among others, some investors have relocated to other countries of the world because of uncertain business environment, resulting in capital flight in the country. “Corruption has created an environment of instability and uncertainty that deters investment in Nigeria.

Participants during the lecture held on Thursday, march 26,

Corruption creates a climate of risk and uncertainty because of the fear that their assets could be seized or that contracts may be unfairly awarded. This has created capital outflow in the country thereby reducing the tax base and making it more difficult for the government to finance public services,” he explained. He equally said that despite the establishment of anti graft agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, to combat corruption and promote transparency, desired results have not been achieved.

He therefore, recommended institutional reforms, strengthening of anti-corruption agencies and ethical leadership development as panacea for corruption ravaging every facet of Nigerian economy. He further stated that by promoting ethical conduct and implementing strategies to reduce corruption, governments can create conducive environment for wealth creation and economic growth in Nigeria.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, noted that the topic of the lecture was timely owing to the monstrous growth of corruption and moral decadence in public sector, and society at large. He further called on Nigerians to reflect on the reasons behind deep-seated corrupt practices and moral dislocation in the nation.
