A Professor of Paediatrics at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Prof. Uchenna Ekwochi, on Thursday, identified inability to initiate and sustain respiration (asphyxia), prematurity and infection as leading causes of newborn mortality.

Prof. Ekwochi, who is the Provost of the Enugu State University College of Medicine (ESUCOM) explained that if the process of birth is laborious, the newborn may suffer a multi-systemic stress leading to asphyxiation which may cost the life of the newborn.

Professor Ekwochi Delivering the Lecture on Thursday

He made the disclosure while discussing the topic “The Travails of the Minor of Minors in Our Resource Limited Settings: Unveiling the Neglected Roadmap to Addressing the Giants and Taming the Tide,” as the 46th inaugural lecturer of ESUT, at the capacity-filled College Auditorium in Parklane, Enugu State.

In the case of premature birth, he explained that the travails would be enormous for the newborn due to the immaturity of the organs and systems to assume physiologic functions to sustain life independent of its mother.

A renowned National Trainer in Newborn health, with 22 years of experience in paediatrics, Ekwochi equally explained that if the process of delivery and care in the child’s immediate environment is not optimal, the baby may become infected (neonatal sepsis.)

Prof Ekwochi further stressed that the three aforementioned factors stand as giants claiming the lives of the newborns globally, adding that Sub-saharan Africa, and Southern and Central Asia bear the heaviest burden of newborn deaths.

He also identified poor parental background, rural births, maternal age and no maternal education as associated causes of high newborn mortalities in the country.

While calling for the establishment of World Asphyxia Day to draw global attention and awareness o the scoruge, he recommended the re-accreditation of all maternities and facilities used for delivery, government subsidization and regulation of cost of child birth in approved delivery centres.

In his opening address, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, thanked the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his continued support to the Institution, stating that ESUT boasts of state-of-the-art equipment, especially in medical disciplines courtesy of the state government’s support.

While commending the lecturer for a good outing, the Vice Chancellor used the occasion to re emphasize the importance of inaugural lectures, stating that they serve as public acknowledgement of professors’ academic achievements, as they afford the lecturers the opportunity to showcase their research, innovations, engagements and teaching endeavours as well as their future research plans.

He also thanked the Chairman of the ESUT Governing Council, Sir, Chinyeaka Ohaa, and another member of the Council, Sir Dr. Innocent Akuvue, for their support for academic excellence through N1000,000, N500, 000 largesse to every inaugural lecturer.
In his remarks at the occasion, the Secretary to Enugu State Government SSG, Prof Chidiebere Onyia feted the Inaugural Lecturer for the rich content, and excellent delivery of his lecture and the ways forward.

The SSG noted that the lecture was good enough to provoke government’s attention at State and national levels and therefore called on the lecturer to liaise with the most outstanding Vice Chancellor in Nigeria (Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie) to package a proposal on the need for “Asphyxia Day” to the State Government for further discussions.

While also congratulating the lecturer, the chairman of ESUT Inaugural Lectures Committee, Prof. Mellitus Ezeamaenyi, stated that frequent academic discourses such as inaugural lectures have greatly improved the visibility and webo metric rankings of the University.

…Issues Ten-point Demand, Accuses State Govt. of Neglect, Abandonment

By Amaechi Agbo

Unless drastic actions are taken timely, the seemingly peaceful and unhitched academic progress experienced in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) could be punctured as the student body in the university, Student Union Government (SUG) has threatened to shutdown the institution in Monday, May 125, 2025 unless the increase in fees by the management is rescinded.

The Student union made the threat on Saturday in a three-page circular after their General Congress on Friday where they gave ten conditions to the management or the university will be lockdown

The memo titled “Resolution of the General Assembly Held On Friday 9th May 2025”, signed by the SUG President, Com Chiagozie Ezenwaji; the Senate President, Com Ezema Chukwuemeka and the Assistant Secretary, Com Nwafor Precious and made available to ESUT Monitor, also accused the management of the university of embezzling the development and sports fees which students have been paying without result.

The circular which was copied to the Governor of Enugu State, the Speaker of the State, the Attorney General of the state, the Vice Chancellor, Commissioner of Police, DSS and NANS, warned that non-reversal of the fees hike will warrant a total lockdown of the university

The students also accused the management and State Government of neglect and abandonment

“After the general Assembly held on the 10th May 202S at the SUG secretariat comprising of All SUG Executives, SUG  Legislative, SUG Judiciary, SUG ministers and SSAL, Faculty Presidents, secretaries and EXCOS, Departmental presidents, secretaries and EXCOS, Hostel governors, Lodge Presidents, Class reps and Stakeholders,

“The students can barely feed due to high cost of living, transporting themselves to school due to high cost of transportation. Students can barely accommodate themselves due to increase in rent that the state government has continuously neglected.

“As a state university we are not different from those staying in the forest, no light for a state owned university and its environs. No single network in the university and environment. No water but yet (sic) the state government deemed it fit that fees be added first because they don’t care about the welfare of the students.

“We are the only state university in Nigeria paying development fees that nothing has been developed since the beginning of those payments. The state government has promised and failed countless times to construct park road yet development fees has been added despite the fact that nothing has been developed with the ones paid before now.,

“The students were promised WiFi yet nothing to show for it. ESUT students for years cannot go for night classes which is a culture in universities for academic excellence because of no single light connected to any faculty auditoriums for night class, no functioning generators, no network, no wifi for browsing yet we pay 50-300k for development fees.,

“The union has been neglected for years. No bus, no funding for the daily running of her activities,” part of the circular read.

The SUG then issued a ten-point demand and gave the management 48 hours ultimatum to rescind the increment face a shut down on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“The students union government therefore stands on the following:

“No more Deans and HOD fees illegally imposed on us since last year instead of the development fees or school fees to be used, we pay extra heavy fees to our Deans and HODs for running the faculties and departments.,

“No sports fee – UNN pay sports fee because they have stadiums, track lanes with well-equipped facilities for gymnastics but here we have nothing not even a proper football field yet every student pays 5000 naira.,

“No Single increase in developmental fees – We should be talking of scrapping the 50,000-300,000 fees that has developed nothing for years only embezzled yet it has been all added.,

“No municipal services fee because the environment has lacked proper maintenance for years now

“No property maintenance fees of 50,000 – What is property maintenance and developmental fees for if not just to wicked students and for embezzlement.

“Steady electricity connected to all faculty auditoriums and departments, steady electricity within and outside the campus

“Constant WiFi and network provision, Park road construction, Provision of a brand new students union Bus, and No single increment in school/development fees.

“If the above-mentioned is not scrapped out and a memo released from the University on or before Monday 12th May 2025, the union will be left with no option but to lock all faculties, school gates, hostels and shut down every academic activity and even protest until our rights to education is protected by the state government.,

“The union through this memo urges all students and general public to not lose hope and faith that we won’t stop until our rights are taken seriously. It is not a crime to be a Nigerian, no jobs, no employments yet we can’t get the least Education to go struggle for our futures,” the circular stated.

It could be recalled that ESUT Management via a memo on April 29 signed by the Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, announced upward adjustment in the tuition/development fees paid by the students with effect from 2025/2026 academic session.

Safeguarding lives particularly that of infants or new-born babies could be considered a herculean task, but to Professor Uchenna Ekwochi, doing such is a hobby, a passion and a calling.

Professor Ekwocchi who is the Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, stated on Thursday that he has managed and taking care of over 7000 new-born babies since he started his profession as a medical practitioner specializing in children and their related diseases.

Professor Ekwochi who delivered the Enugu State University of Science and Technology 46th Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, said that taking care of new-borns is not just his profession but a passion.

“My Profession is my hobby, a deep passion. In 2012, when I returned from residency and got employed at ESUT Teaching Hospital as a paediatrician, I reopened the new-born unit. The new-born unit was formerly opened, but when the consultant working there exited the system, it was shut down. When I came on board, I reopened it, and I have managed over 7,000 sick new-borns in the unit,” Prof Ekwochi who is a Professor of Paediatrics and a Consultant, stated while delivering the lecture held at the ESUT College of Medicine Auditorium, Parklane, Enugu

He however explained that carrying out such tasks could not have been a personal efforts. He noted that he has a team of consultants who coordinate the work.

“Well, I have a team; it’s not a one-man show but a teamwork. I started alone in 2012; in 2014, they employed another consultant to join me. We started with 2 but now we have more than 5 resident doctirs in the new-born unit. I have another consultant that works with me. It has grown because initially, we had a bed capacity of less than 10, but as am talking to you, there are more than 20 for each of the sections. We have the inborn and the out-born sections, and we have managed quite a lot of babies, over 7, 000 of them.

“ESUT Teaching Hospital is like a referral centre since UNTH moved from the Metropolis; all the babies that get issues around this area have no other paediatric ward than to come to Newborn Unit in ESUT Teaching Hospital.”

He also talked about inadequate manpower to handle the volume of new-born babies and called on the Enugu State Government to consider engaging more hands in that regard.

“Most times, our bed occupancy rate would be more than 95 percent. Every time you enter there, we don’t have enough manpower and human resources. So, the aftermath is that workers are overburdened. This place is filled every time with several cases coming. Some of these cases can actually be prevented. That’s what I actually made people know in this lecture. If we do what we ought to do, there are so many cases coming in that wouldn’t have come because we have given them preventive measures.

“Some of them are coming as complications and not as signs and symptoms of the illness. Example: yellowness of the skin and the eye, which can damage the brain. Most mothers in our environment, instead of coming to tell you that ‘I have a baby that is having yellowness of the eyes,’ but they will not come until the baby has refused to suck—that means the disease has entered the brain and damaged the brain. That’s when the mother would recognize. ‘My baby is no more sucking; the leg and hand are stiff.’ It’s already complicated. The reason why it’s like that is because they didn’t even know when the baby became sick.

“I also called on the government to engage more hands in the Teaching Hospital,” concluded.

In every establishment, there are those who rise by merit, and others who survive by licking boots. While the former adheres to rules of their engagement and go extra mile to add value to the system, the latter strive to earn favour through sycophancy.

They don’t challenge the status quo. They don’t bring fresh ideas. They just clap, nod, and echo whatever the boss says, right or wrong. In a nutshell, they are the “oh yes staff members”. Interestingly, the people in chain of command see them as being more useful to the system.

Definitively, the term “bootlickers” refers to individuals who excessively flatter or try to gain favour with their superiors, often at the expense of their own integrity or the well-being of others.

They are professionals in “eye service” and would stop at nothing to bring down staff members who question their insincere motives.

Often times, the Chief Executive aligns with them to punish others. They a specialists in rumour-mongering, reporting every cough and any sneeze to the boss. Whereas their intention may appear innocuous, the reaction of the boss towards them makes things difficult in the system often times stagnating production and inhibiting promotion

Great leaders don’t need praise singers. They need truth tellers. They need bold, competent people who respectfully disagree, ask tough questions, and offer better solutions.

Synonyms for “bootlicking” include terms like fawning, obsequious, sycophantic, toadyish, and servile. Other words that describe the action of flattering or pleasing someone in a submissive way are truckling, currying favour, and sucking up. In essence, these words all convey the idea of someone trying to win favour or approval through insincere flattery and excessive deference

In the context of the workplace, bootlicking can indeed be a threat to growth and productivity in the following areas;

Lack of constructive feedback: Bootlickers may be reluctant to provide honest feedback or criticism, fearing it may jeopardize their relationship with their superior. This can lead to unaddressed issues and missed opportunities for growth.

Unhealthy work environment: Bootlicking can create a toxic work environment where sycophancy is rewarded, and independent thinking is discouraged. This can lead to low morale, high turnover rates, and decreased job satisfaction.

Inefficient decision-making: When bootlickers prioritize pleasing their superiors over providing objective input, it can result in poor decision-making. This can have far-reaching consequences, including financial losses, damaged reputation, and decreased competitiveness.

Stifling innovation: Bootlicking can stifle innovation and creativity, as individuals may be less likely to propose new ideas or challenge existing practices. This can lead to stagnation and a lack of progress.

Erosion of trust: When employees perceive that bootlicking is tolerated or rewarded, it can erode trust in the organization and its leadership. This can lead to decreased motivation, engagement, and commitment.

To mitigate the negative effects of bootlicking, organizations can foster a climate that values and promotes constructive feedback and open communication, independent thinking and innovation, objective decision-making, transparency and accountability and employee empowerment and autonomy

By promoting these values, organizations or establishments can create a healthy and productive work culture that encourages growth, innovation, and success.

Real progress comes when we reward courage, not cowardice in disguise. Let’s build cultures where people rise by competence, not by compliance.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT on Monday April 28, 2025 began the 2024/2025 Second semester academic activities after Easter break.

ESUT Monitor went round some faculties to monitor activities and can report that while lecturers are on duty, students have not yet resumed school.

On Tuesday, for instance, when our reporters visited Mass Communication Department, they witnessed Final Year students having lecture as at 11:35am, while Years 3 and 1 also had classes on the same day. However, the number of students in the classes could be easily counted at a glance with majority of them yet to resume school.

The situation is similar in all the departments visited including English and Literary Studies, ELS, Public Administration, Education, among others.

Speaking in an interview with our reporters, the HOD of Banking and Finance Dr Gabriel Anidiobu said lecturers are very ready to begin academic work but lamented that the students are nowhere to be found.

“The lecturers are in their offices and they have visited the classrooms. We have few students who are available. But by second week, we are going to have fuller classes.

“The Lecturers are not waiting for anybody. We have taking off and the week is counting ready. Students should know that attendance counts from day one of resumption,” he told our reporters in his office on Wednesday.

Students interviewed said they resumed school early to help them get ready from the rigorous academic activities ahead and commended the lecturers for ensuring that the week was productive.

Students who have Not Resumed will have themselves to Blame – Registrar

Meanwhile, the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu has warned that students who have not resumed school are doing so at their own peril.

Mr Ugwu who stated this when our reporters visited him in his office on Wednesday, said that the University management will ensure strict adherence to the school calendar at all times.

He noted that the short Easter break was over adding that students who are on extended break should know that 75% attendance is sine qua none for examination.

“Academic activities resumed on Monday after almost two weeks Easter Break. If any student decides not to resumes, that is his/ her decision but we have taking off and the calendar is already counting. We have directed lecturers to resume classes immediately and I thank God that your reporters visited some of the departments and saw for yourself. Any students who is still at home is doing so at his peril because at the end of the day, 75% will count and before the students will be allowed to write exams.

“Additionally, let me also reiterate that it has become a norm here to follow the calendar religiously. The revised Calendar is out and the second semester may end in July. Invariably, there is no time, so students should make hair while the sun shines,” he advised.

Enugu – The class of 1991 graduates of Mass Communication in the then Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH) now Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) recently held a reunion 34 years after leaving the four walls of the university.

A reunion of men and women of no mean repute, the gathering which held at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, saw many of the 1991 class gathered to brainstorm on their alma matter and the need to support the department which made them whom they have become in life.

The event which could be described as a class act, saw the very accomplished classmates engage in activities that sought to reconnect and bond with one another, and also primarily sought to make meaningful contributions to its Alma Mater, to improve the learning standards of the students.

First was a moment of reminiscence as the members took time out to express their feelings on their studentship, what they passed through, the good, the bad and the ugly sides of the their years in ESUT. They recalled with nostalgia their days in the department, the lecturers that made impact on their lives such as Dr Chidi Ozoh, Dr Ezenweze Onyisi and the late Prof Edeani.

They had a robust discussion on how to take the department to greater heights. Their concern and interest in the department still very deep and palpable given the wide range of penetrating questions they asked about the department.

In his welcome address, the chairman of the day, Ozo Silas thanked the members for finding time to honour the invitation. He said, on a lighter mood, that even if the gathering achieved nothing, the fact that some persons who had not meant for more than three decades have been able to see themselves once again, makes the reunion memorable.

Jubilation after reunion.

He noted that while the reunion was the first, subsequent meetings would be held particularly through their WhatsApp platform where they are already brainstorming on their plans and activities.

On his part, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Barr Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa, expressed delight over the reunion and described the gesture as unique and encouraged the members to sustain the tempo.

“I am overwhelmed by emotions being in your midst to hear your stories of how you passed through the department more than 34 years ago. You have gathered here ostensibly not to meet for the fun of it but because you have the passion and the zeal to ask after your alma mater.

“Thirty-four years after leaving the department, you gathered here to think about how to support the department that trained all of us. On behalf the board, staff and students, I want to sincerely thank you for this gesture and pray that after once, we should be hearing about further meetings and interactions. The Department belongs to all of us and by helping to build and sustain it, we are also preparing and repositioning the future of our own children and wards. Thank you, and God bless you all,” Dr Ezinwa said.

In his response, the chairman of the meeting, Ozo Silas requested the HOD to furnish them with a formal list of the various challenges and needs of the department so that the group could see how they could come in to assist. They promised to visit the department to explore areas of partnership and collaboration soon

The Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), later renamed the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), was founded on July 30, 1980. It was established by law and became the first indigenous University of Technology in Nigeria.

The Department of Mass Communication was established in July, 1985 with the vision to produce competent and highly qualified graduates that will excel in the practice of communication and journalism. It produced her first graduates in 1988.

This will help if there’s any document that couldn’t be seen in the faculty; it must be with Student Affairs. This department serves as a fulcrum of every student and it is important that we have the students’ data on our fingertips

Agbani – The staff of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) may not start receiving their new minimum wage any time soon as the University management has disclosed that it would need at least the sum of N25 million monthly to effectively implement the new minimum wage in the institution, www.esutmoitor.com can authoritatively report.

This is as the State Government, the owner of the university is silent over increase in the subvention it pays to the university.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie said on Wednesday during the University Senate Meeting, that the management needs the sum of N25 million monthly to begin the implementation of the new minimum wage in the school.

ESUT Monitor gathered that Professor Okolie who stated the management’s willingness to begin the implementation of the new minimum wage, however expressed dismay that without corresponding increment in the Enugu State Government’s subvention, the university is handicapped.

The VC while acknowledging the difficulties the staff face in view of the implementation of the new wage structure, considering that the state government began the implementation in November 2024, called on the workers to patient with the management as they sort out solution.

Sources told this paper that the VC noted that no tertiary institution in Enugu State has started paying its staff the new minimum wage and called on the staff for more Understanding.

One of our sources recalled what the VC said during the meeting thus: “The committee on implementation of the new minimum wage submitted their report some weeks ago and to effectively begin this new payment, we will need additional N25 million every month. This will catapult our monthly wage bill to N467 million out of which the State Government pays N204 subvention. Which means we will be sorting out N263 million monthly for wages if we must pay the new minimum wage.

“The Government has not said anything on increasing the subvention, however, we are not relenting. I want to assure our staff that the management is working round the clock to sort things out and find a solution,” the source said.

The VC noted that while faculties and departments are increasing, the government subvention to the university is not increasing which adds much strains to the already stretched resources in the university

The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that the university will, starting from June 1st, 2025, commence payment of the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) to all lecturers.

CONUASS is a salary structure used in Nigeria for academic staff, including lecturers and professors, in both federal and state universities

He appreciated the academic staff for their patience with respect to the payment of the CONUASS

CONUASS stands for Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure. It’s a salary structure used in Nigeria for academic staff, including lecturers and professors, in both federal and state universities

The Vice Chancellor further promised to start paying promotion arrears from 2020/2021. And expressed his determination to exhaust all the debt he inherited before he leaves the university including the Cooperative Micro-Finance
