Enugu – In another mileage of signposting the activities of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and stamping its feet as the Flagship Newspaper of the university community, the ESUT Monitor Newspaper has come out with a SPECIAL EDITION to mark Professor Uchenna Ekwochi’s One Year in office as the Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, ESUCOM.

The 16-page Sepcial Edition chronicles Prof Ekwochi’s rise to the Provostship of the College and his landmark transformative leadership one year after assuming office.

The Special Edition further marks the ESUT Monitor’s rising pedigree not just within the University community but in Enugu State.

Dr Ekwochi, a Professor of Paediatrics and a consultant, has demystified ESUCOM with his innovative ideas and welfare of staff and students.

The latest edition, making it three times the ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) hardcopy is being published in this semester – Convocation Edition in November 2024, Matriculation Edition in February 2025 – is dedicated to Prof Uchenna Ekwochi’s one Year pragmatic administration at the ESUCOM.

Professor Uchenna Ekwochi, Provost, ESUT College of Medicine

The Paper will start circulating today, and despite coming out with a price tag of ₦1000 per copy, Prof Ekwochi who singlehandedly sponsored the publication, said that staff, students and friends of the College and ESUT at large, will collect copies free.

This Is A Landmark Record, We are Making Progress – Dr Ezinwa, HOD Mass Comm

Responding to the mileage, the Head of Department, Mass Communication, Barr Dr Chidiebere Anthony Ezinwa described the production of the Special Edition as a landmark record particularly coming out less than three weeks after the production of the Matriculation Edition.

Dr Ezinwa noted that the production was made more tasking considering that it came out during examination and the EMN Reporters are not available.

While congratulating the Provost on his one year in office and the significant strides recorded, Dr Ezinwa praised the commitment of the students who despite their examinations schedule took part in the reportage as well as the EMN Staff Adviser for shouldering the daunting responsibility of packaging the Special Edition.

“Three Newspapers in a semester, sounds very unreal but that is the commitment and determination the department places on ESUT Monitor Newspaper. Recall that when the newspaper started over three decades ago, it’s published once in a session. But after the revival, the system has changed .

“Today we have a Special Edition commemorating the outstanding one year in office of Professor Uchenna Ekwochi as Provost, ESUT College of Medicine. He singlehandedly sponsored the production of the paper and we are grateful to him and the ESUCOM Management Board.

“Coming out at this period is very challenging because we just published the Matriculation Edition which came out on February 24. Today, March 12, another edition is out. Added to that is the fact that the students despite their ongoing examinations took part in the coverage and reportage of events but couldn’t participate in the editing and finishing end. This leaves the Staff Adviser, Mr Amaechi Agbo with a staggering task to shoulder and I am happy that, as always, they delivered.

The Provost is a Team Player

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate the Provost on his one year anniversary. The Provost is a keen supporter and reader of EMN and we can’t thank him enough. He has demonstrated the can-do spirit to reposition the College in line with the vision of our Vice Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie,” he said.

Prof Uchenna Ekwochi assumed office as the Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, ESUCOM, on March 12, 2024. He replaced Late Prof Innocent Okafor who died on December 9, 2023.

ESUT Monitor Newspaper is a publication of the Department of Mass Communication, ESUT. EMN is primarily to serve as the training medium for Mass Communication students and to promote and propagate activities of the University.

The Latest edition is making it the SIXTH since the EMN was relauchned in November 2023.

According to Robert Green in his assessment of great men, he said “A great man is always willing to be little. A great man does not seek applause or place; he seeks for truth; he seeks the road to happiness, and what he ascertains, he gives to others. No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of great men.

Born on this day in 1971, young and accomplished Professor Uche Ugwuanyi, a Professor of Accounting in the Department of Accountancy at the Enugu State  University of Science and Technology, ESUT, is a familiar name to every staff, student and most especially within the management circle.

A lecturer per excellence, Professor Uche Ugwuanyi has distinguished himself not just within his profession, department and the university environment but is a beckon of hope to humanity.

A little kid in the 70s, a boy with visions in the 80s, transformed his visions to realities in the 90s. His aspirations in the 2000s, accomplishments in the 2010s defined him not just as a man of great valour but a humble being with the heart of golden in the 2020s, helping humanity to redefine their aspirations.

A future moulder, the Directorate of ESUT Entrepreneurship Development Centre, EDC, where Professor Ugwauanyi is the Director, has become the reservoir of ESUT academic and entrepreneurial incubation. His few years as EDC Director has transformed the centre into a bastion, churning out future discoverers who are already changing the landscape of the nation in business, science, technology, among others.

Professor Uche Ugwuanyi, A Professional To The Core

Hailing from Orba, in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, he has made significant contributions to the academic community, the society and humanity at large. His impressive educational background, having obtained his B.Sc. in Accounting and Master of Business Administration in Accounting from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, where he obtained his Master of Science degree in Marketing with a specialization in Public Relations. He further pursued his academic interests at Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, where he bagged an M.Sc./Ph.D. in Accounting.

Throughout his career, he has held various leadership positions within the academic institution. He previously served as the Director of Industrial Training at ESUT and currently serves as the Director of the Entrepreneurship Centre at the university. His expertise and experience in these roles have greatly influenced the development of students’ practical skills and entrepreneurial mind-set. These leadership roles highlight his commitment to both academic and practical aspects of accounting education.

Prof. Ugwuanyi has come a long way with impressive track of championing the struggle for a better world for people around him. He is never satisfied until the people crossing his path find a front for physical, psychological and financial satisfactions. His insatiable quest on what to do to put smiles in the faces of his people, give humanity the reason to live a fulfilled life.

His professional affiliations demonstrate his commitment to excellence in his field. He is a Fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Nigeria (CITN). Additionally, he is recognized as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN). These memberships highlight his dedication to staying updated with the latest industry practices and contributing to the advancement of the accounting profession.

Until recently, professional accountants mostly domiciled in the Southeast zone had been facing challenges of travelling outside their work places and outside the zone to enrol for the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria’s examinations. This had really created hardship for them in terms of temporarily relieving themselves of their jobs, accommodation, travelling, feeding and other costs while away. But like the ex machina, Prof. Uche came into the picture, pushed relentlessly for the people, and got approval for a new centre in the state. This is a huge relief and celebratory intervention many never saw coming. He did it without flaunting it. He did it without pride. He did it for the prosperity of humanity. He did it to ease the plights and sweat of his people. His professorial qualification didn’t end in papers. He has shown advanced shift in paradigms and how to go about it.

The Birthday Boy, A MAN OF HIS PEOPLE

Being a bridge builder and a link connecting different strata and the youth demography, the erudite professor has wiped tears from a good number of jobless youths through mentorship and role-modelling. He would connect them to the right channels, encourage them on the best steps that would earn them entrepreneurial sufficiency and capacity building. His is a mission dedicated to human capital development and human growth. Many have drawn inspiration from him and now spreading that goodwill to other people. It’s a chain of infectious gratitude extended to others.

As a renowned scholar, he has made significant contributions to the accounting field through his research. He has authored numerous scholarly works that have been published in reputable local and international journals, showcasing his expertise and deep understanding of the subject. Furthermore, he actively participates in both local and international conferences, expanding his knowledge and staying abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, he finds joy in his personal life. He is happily married to Dr. Mrs. Onyinye Sonia Ugwuanyi, and together they are blessed with children. His commitment to both his family and his professional endeavours showcases his ability to balance personal and professional responsibilities effectively.

More importantly, he is a highly respected academic and professional in the field of accounting. His extensive educational background, leadership positions, professional affiliations, research contributions, and awards all demonstrate his dedication to advancing the field of accounting and nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs and accountants.

In recognition of his exceptional work and dedication to the academic and professional realms, he has been honoured with several awards throughout his career. These accolades serve as a testament to his exemplary contributions and solidify his standing as a respected figure in the field of accounting.

Prof. Uche Ugwuanyi is such a personality that frequents old people’s homes, less-privileged, orphanages, hospitals, etcetera, to give back to the society and make sure everyone is happy.

Even as he celebrates yet another year today, May 15, 2024, his positive impacts on the lives of the people will not be forgotten in a hurry as he keeps pushing, speaking and fighting for a world where all mankind can fulfil their destiny. A world of renewed faith in humanity indeed is being driven to a new trajectory.

He enjoys reading ESUT Monitor

Just yesterday, at the Faculty of Management Sciences Appraisal board meeting, he was everywhere, with his fellow professors and head of departments, interacting with the staff who are due for promotion, guiding them on how to file their files aright.

William Shakespeare in one of his classic plays, Twelfth Night, said that “Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them,” Professor Uche Ugwuanyi is an embodiment of all and indeed, a man of the people.

On the 4th of April, 2022, the Enugu State Government announced the appointment of Professor Aloysius-Michaels Nnabugwu Okolie as the new Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier Science and Technology University, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). The appointment was contained in a letter signed by the then Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya. The appointment was with effect from Monday, April 4, 2022.

Upon assumption of office, Prof. Okolie anchored his administration on restoring the old values setup by founding fathers of ESUT with a purpose of making the citadel of learning to be reckoned with as one of the first-class and highly competitive universities East of the Niger with administrative and academic excellence comparable to other global top-class tertiary institutions.

“The first vision I have for ESUT is to restore the basic values of scholarship and research and to turn the minds of the academia, including the non-teaching staff into believing in themselves and getting the internal orientation arising from reflection. I will make them to believe that they are cut out to perform specific functions which have to do with promoting teaching, research, collaboration and networking between groups, trans-groups and inter-groups with a view to extending frontiers of knowledge and building a very virile community of scholars in ESUT,” Prof Okolie disclosed on his first day in office.

Since assuming office as Vice-Chancellor, he has been on a mission to transform the university into a centre of excellence that serves not only the state of Enugu, but the entire nation and beyond.

ESUT VC, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie in an chat with ESUT Monitor Reporters recently

With over twenty years of academic experience, Professor Okolie is no stranger to the world of academia his research interests spanning a wide range of topics, including political theory, human rights, conflict resolution, and international relations. He has authored several books and numerous academic papers, and his work has been widely cited by scholars and policymakers alike.

Invariably, ESUT was not a novel ground for him to explore.

Under his stewardship, the University has undergone a rapid transformation that has left many observers amazed at the speed and efficiency of the changes that have taken place. These transformations cut across physical development, staff and students’ welfare, discipline, research and innovation, scholarship, revival of committee system and return to the extant culture of the University among others.

Physical infrastructure: One of the most notable achievements of Professor Okolie’s administration has been the construction of a multi-million-naira asphalted pavilion for convocation, matriculation, and other ceremonies at ESUT. This has provided a much-needed upgrade to the University’s infrastructure and has given students and staff alike a sense of pride and belonging.

Chronicles of other modest achievements that fall under infrastructural development and improvement of existing facilities include but not limited to: replacement of seats at the Julius Onah Auditorium, ESUT; replacement of seats at the Senate Chambers; installation of solar energy in the Vice Chancellor’s office; improvement of electricity supply on campus by attracting the donation of additional electric feeder from stakeholders in the state.

Agbani March 10 – In a candid interview with ESUT Monitor, Chiagozie Miracle Ezenwaji, popularly known as Agozie (Joy is coming) recounted his journey from a passionate student with political aspirations to becoming the first-ever Student Union Government (SUG) President from his faculty at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

Reflecting on his path to leadership, Agozie shared, “I started having a passion for politics in my second year when I became acquainted with what was happening in the school. Despite losing the bid for Faculty P.R.O. in my third year, it was a learning experience that fueled my determination to strive for greater things.”

Agozie’s resilience and commitment to leaving a mark on campus led him to actively support previous SUG presidents while serving as Minister for External Affairs under the leadership of Comrade Donatus. His drive to make a difference culminated in organizing a successful competition during his tenor within the school community, showcasing his leadership abilities and organizational skills.

When asked about his motivation to run for SUG President after a setback, Agozie emphasized, “Failing is not the final busstop. I wasn’t discouraged by failure but saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. My motivation stemmed from a passion to achieve greater things and make a positive impact.”

President Agozie outlined his plans to prioritize the welfare of students through an inclusive government and the establishment of a welfare committee to address students’ concerns effectively. Additionally, he aims to enhance academic welfare by organizing inter-school, interstate, and international competitions to foster student development.

In addressing social amenities, Agozie expressed confidence in collaborative efforts with the university management, government, and non-governmental organizations to secure funding for essential facilities such as electricity and water, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and living on campus.

Maintaining a balance between his political responsibilities and academic pursuits, Comrade Agozie affirmed his commitment to prioritizing his studies while fulfilling his duties as SUG President. He emphasized, “Studying hard remains my primary focus, with the political position serving as an additional responsibility. I understand that failing to prioritize academics could jeopardize both my role as SUG President and my academic pursuits.”

As Chiagozie Miracle Ezenwaji embarks on his tenure as SUG President, his journey exemplifies resilience, vision, and a dedication to serving the student community at ESUT.

Today the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose George Ugwu marks his 62nd Birthday as well as two years anniversary in office as the Chief Scribe of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT

Born over six decades ago, Mr Ugwu on February 10 officially replaced Barr. Tobias M. Ikpenwa as the ESUT Registrar following his appointment by the Governing Council. on February 4th, 2022

A very experienced hand in University Administration, Mr. Ugwu has spent over 31 years as a Senior Administrative Staff and has served in different units ranging from Admissions, Records. Establishment, Student Affairs. Faculties and the like. He has also served severally as Chairman, Secretary or member of a number of sensitive committees of the university including Roadmap Committee, Ceremonials Committee, Committee on Review Of ESI_JT condition of service etc. Currently, he is the National Treasurer of ESUT Alumni Association.

He has attended many local and international trainings, workshops and conferences. Mr. ugwu recently bagged a certificate on policy strategy and leadership course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) – Kuru Jos – Plateau State.
He is happily married with children,

Ahead of His 62nd Birthday today, our Birthday baby, Chief Ambrose George Ugwu granted ESUT Monitor Exclusive Interview on his achievements after two years in office, challenges and Motivation.

How Has It Been Since You Assumed Office As Registrar?

You know I applied for this job so I don’t have any reason to complain that the job is very stressful or tiring. It’s a job that I enjoy and I think you can never see me having an ugly face. I am always smiling because I derive joy from what I am doing and I am happy that people are happy with what I am doing. I am adding more glamour, whatever thing I have within me to ensure that the university which is my Alma mater moves forward.

The Registrar is an ardent reader of ESUT Monitor Newspaper

Are There Any challenges?
The challenges are that, there are ways you plan to do your own work and your subordinates may not understand your ways of work. For me I make sure to leave my office as if it’s the last day. The biggest challenge is that it is not easy traveling from Enugu to Agbani, you might have your programme of activities for the day only to be disorganised by the people waiting for you or by other things. Most of the times I leave the office 6pm, but then when you notice that the people, you’re doing this for are happy, you will be happy. I thank God for health, because this job is not something you can do if you’re not healthy but it’s all thanks to God that I have gotten to the zenith of my profession.

What Would You Be Remembered For After Your Time In Office?

It’s still too far, but if you look at the pictures, you’ll notice our former registrars. I want my own picture to be there so once someone enters the office he will say “ah if it where the time of so and so, this case would have been different”. It’s people that will say this is how you performed not you, it’s always difficult to rate yourself but if people rate you, you’ll be glad because they will bring out so many things about you that you don’t know. I thank God that within me I say I want to be remembered as one of the people that moved ESUT forward.

After The Day’s Hectic Works, How Do You Relax Sir?

Well, it’s not all that easy. When I go home everything concerning the university drop it there some other person is in charge at home. But then one thing that gives me joy, immediately I go home I eat, take my bath and sleep. I have not watched TV for a whole year. If I leave office by 6pm, how will I relax at home to watch television?

What Are Your Hobbies?
I love reading. I love taking a morning stroll and then again, I love having chat with people. Those give me joy. I enjoy going through the ESUT Monitor Newspaper, so all these things are to improve in what am doing.

Happy Birthday To you, Chief Ambrose George Ugwu, ESUT Registrar.

What Motivates You Sir?
What motivates me is that people derive joy in what I do and I derive joy too no matter what I do, if you’re in need of two naira and I have three naira I’ll give you. Once I give it to you it will take 24 hours before I get double of it. It is God’s gift.

Where Would You Be By March 2027?
We have to pray to be alive till then. But I think one good thing is that I am a child of destiny. If I leave office 10th February 2027, by 14th I’ll be retiring from the active service. I’ll be 65 years by then. Knowing that I am still looking young even though I am old, by the grace of God, he will place me fine, because you know, man proposes but God disposes.

From all of us at the ESUT Monitor Newspaper, published by the Department of Mass Communication, we wish you more wisdom and strength in your new year. Happy 62 Cheers.
