In his unbridled quest to deepen youth engagement, competence and capacity in his administration, Hon. Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, the Executive Chairman of Nsukka LGA, has appointed Hon Anselm Eze, as the Special Adviser on Environment and WASH.

Hon. Eze is the immediate past Chairman of Idi/Ogbozara Ward of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Hon Eze also doubled as the Coordinating Chairman of Nsukka LGA Chapter of Enugu State Forum of PDP Ward Chairmen.

His appointment, hailed in every quarter, is, yet, another eloquent testimony that there is no substitute for hard work, dedication and commitment as verifiably epitomised by him, (Hon. Eze), over the years.

With this latest appointment, the Prudent Mayor, Engr. Asogwa, has, once again, demonstrated his grassroots-oriented disposition which saw his eagle eye discovering his latest appointee.

Given the mandate to make Nsukka LGA the cleanest LGA in Enugu State, it is believed that Hon. Eze, who has a track record of credible performance will deliver on this mandate.

As we celebrate his new responsibility, we pray God Almighty to give Hon. Eze the requisite Solomonic wisdom to live up to expectations and even surpass it.

The student Affairs of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in collaboration with the Students Union Government held an intensive
sensitization and orientation programme for the upcoming aspirants in the university.

The programme was headed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Ifeoma Okwor with the SUG president, Comr. Chiagozie Ezenwaji

The orientation was held at the Prof. Julius Onah Auditorium with attendance of over 80 aspirants from different departments and faculties

The Dean of Student affairs, Prod Ifeoma okwor in her address urged the students not to make the upcoming election to be a ‘do or die’ affair and let it be a friendly exercise

The SUG president and the Speaker equally shared talks and topics with the aspirants that was of help to them, informing the Senate aspirants of another election within the house after the general election.

“This sensitization is to make people aware of what they don’t know, and they have been picking up the forms for one position or another. We are here to give them what they should expect, the process they will go through. From now on, there will be several screenings, like security screening, and we will look at their academic records.

“Thankfully, we have the current Student Union Government telling them what to expect. We are here to sensitize them so they know it’s not an easy job, and after this, if you want to withdraw, you can withdraw, seeing that you cannot do it.

“That’s why the SUG Senate increased the CGPA to 3.5 because it takes their time. That’s why we want intelligent students to be the ones leading so they can do well in their academic programmes. This orientation will yield fruitful results for the aspirants because we are enlightening them on what they need to know, ” the Dean said

Meanwhile, screening of aspirants will hold on Wednesday May 28, 2025 at the Hall C starting from.9:30am.

…Declare Support for Ukachukwu in Anambra 2025

Youths in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of the APC Youth Vanguard, have commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his commitment towards the development of the South-East region.

The National Convener of the APC Youth Vanguard, Dr. Chibueze Oleka, made this commendation on Saturday in Awka, Anambra State.

He stated that President Tinubu’s second visit to Anambra within five months shows the President’s genuine interest in the state and his willingness to carry every part of the country along in his leadership. He described the visits as signs of a listening and inclusive administration that values unity and regional balance.

Dr. Oleka also reaffirmed the group’s full support for President Tinubu’s administration and future political plans. According to him, the APC Youth Vanguard is mobilizing across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State to ensure victory for the party in the coming elections and beyond.

He congratulated High Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC flag bearer ahead of the November 2025 Anambra governorship election, and assured him of the Youth Vanguard’s active support. Oleka described Ukachukwu as a leader with the drive and vision to move Anambra forward, calling on Ndi Anambra to rally behind him for a new era of development.

Speaking on Governor Charles Soludo, the group appreciated his reception of President Tinubu during the recent visit, but added that his time in office has run its course and called on him to prepare for a peaceful handover.

“Soludo has tried within his own limit, but it is clear to the people that Anambra needs a new direction. Chief Ukachukwu is prepared to offer that direction with a well-defined plan to reposition the state,” Oleka stated.

The statement reads ” PRESS STATEMENT BY APC YOUTH VANGUARD Dated: May 9, 2025

The APC Youth Vanguard extends sincere appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for once again visiting Anambra State—his second visit in just five months. This repeated show of attention reflects the President’s genuine concern for the people of Anambra and the entire South-East. We are thankful for his commitment to building unity across the nation.

As a body of progressive-minded youths, we fully support President Tinubu’s administration and leadership direction. We recognize his efforts to rebuild Nigeria, and we are already preparing to rally support for him ahead of the next general election. We believe continuity under his watch will bring lasting solutions to the challenges facing our country.

We congratulate High Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC governorship candidate in Anambra State, ahead of the November 2025 election. His emergence brings fresh hope and renewed energy to the party. Our youth structures across all the 3 Senatorial zones and 21 local Government Areas are already mobilizing support to ensure victory for the APC come November.

Chief Ukachukwu has shown leadership and a clear plan to move Anambra forward. His experience and passion for development are what the state needs at this crucial time. We urge the people of Anambra to give him their full support, as we work together for a better future.

We also commend Governor Charles Soludo for the warm and respectful reception he gave President Tinubu during his visit. It is important for leaders to work together in the interest of national progress. Governor Soludo has tried within his capacity, but the truth remains that Anambra needs a new direction, one that will bring deeper development and inclusive growth.

As the 2025 election draws near, we encourage Governor Soludo to prepare for a smooth transition. The people of Anambra deserve more than what they currently have. Chief Ukachukwu represents the future of the state, and he is coming with a clear road map to lift Anambra to greater heights.

However, we thank President Tinubu for his continued visits and care for Anambra. We also congratulate Chief Ukachukwu and assure him that the APC Youth Vanguard is solidly behind him. Our team remains active and ready to deliver support that will secure victory at the polls in all the 21 local Government Areas in the state.

As Nigerians, we have a unique opportunity to save our country from its downward spiral and state of hopelessness, and shape it into the great nation we all desire. At the heart of democratic leadership lies a trio of virtues: courage, integrity, and devotion to democratic principles.

Courage, as they say, is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. For Nigeria to overcome its present economic challenges, both elected and appointed officials at all levels of government must embody these value-laden qualities.

Courage enables leaders to stand up for what is right, even when it’s difficult, and not be swayed by personal or primordial interests. Integrity ensures that their actions are guided by honesty, transparency, and accountability. Devotion to democratic principles underscores their commitment to upholding the rule of law, equality, and justice.

As Nigerians, we must protect our hard-won democracy. We must demand more from those we entrusted with leadership. We must hold them accountable for their actions and ensure that they lead with integrity, courage, and a commitment to democratic principles.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Let us draw inspiration from the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, who fought tirelessly for democracy and freedom.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – Nelson Mandela

As citizens, we all have a critical role to play in upholding democracy. We honor the

memory of countless patriots who lost their lives in the fight for a democratic government. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

From the struggles against colonial rule to the battles against military dictatorship,

Nigeria’s democracy has been forged in the fire of sacrifice and perseverance. We owe it to these heroes to continue their work, strengthen our democratic institutions, and build a better future for all Nigerians.

By promoting democratic principles, inclusiveness, and courageous leadership, we can

create a Nigeria where the voices of all citizens are heard and valued. Let us draw inspiration from the bravery and selflessness of Nigeria’s patriots and work together to build a brighter future for our dearly beloved country.

We must engage with our leaders, hold them accountable, and work together to build a better future for Nigeria. This requires embracing our diversity and promoting inclusiveness in all aspects of our national life.

We must recognize that our strength lies in our unity and that our diversity is a beauty that should be celebrated. By promoting inclusiveness, we can address the unnecessary agitation for separatism and build a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

As the African proverb goes, “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.” Let us unite in our diversity and work towards a common goal. The unity we strive for is one that celebrates our unique cultures, religions, and languages, and creates a sense of belonging and identity for every Nigerian.

Let us heed the admonishment of Helen Keller, who said that “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” The time for courageous leadership is now. The time for integrity and devotion to democratic principles is now. Let us join forces to build a more united and prosperous Nigeria, guided by democratic principles and courage.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Together, we can create a Nigeria where leaders are celebrated and held in high esteem because of the values they espouse. We can have a Nigeria where leadership is a beacon of hope, integrity, and courage. A Nigeria where democracy thrives and the voices of the people are heard and heeded.

…Umueze is the Project –  Igwe-elect

By Amaechi Agbo

Prince Emeka Ani has emerged the New Igwe of Umueze Awkunanaw Autonomous Community in Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State.

Prince Ani was elected the new Igwe on Saturday, April 12, 2025 after he won the Igweship election conducted at the Umueze Primary School.

The Igwe-elect polled a total of 677 votes against 60 scored by his rival, Elder Patrick Nwafor.

Indigenes of the community came out in numbers to cast their vote. The new Igwe will replace Late Igwe Nwankwo Chukwu who died in 2019. Since the demise of the former occupant of the throne, plans to conduct the Igweship election had always hit brick walls.

However, the day was not without dramatic scenes as the election which was earlier scheduled to commence by 10am started by 12noon.

Court Orders Drama

There was drama earlier in the day after the Nigeria Police wanted to stop the election amidst claim of court orders. The Police Area Command Agbani insisted that the election should not go on in view of two court orders they received adding that the order from the Enugu High Court should be obeyed.

The argument which started shortly after the representatives of the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs arrived the venue of the election, enlisted reactions from the crowd who have gathered to cast their votes. While the Police insisted on obeying the court orders, the ministry objected claiming that they were not served any court order restraining the conduct of the election. After several arguments, the police threatened to back off from the election in obedient to the Court orders adding that they will not be involved in providing security for the poll.

Two court orders in support and against the conduct of the election were. While Prince Ani had got a court injunction ordering the election to go ahead as planned, another court order emanating from the camp of Patrick Nwafor sort to stop the election.

ESUT Monitor gathered that while Prince Ani’s Court order was served on April 8, that of Patricks’ was allegedly issued less than 24 hours to the election. Chairman of the Igweship Electoral Committee, Engr Okwudiri Ohaa told the media shortly after the election that nobody served him nor his committee a court order stopping the election.

Umueze people queued to cast their votes

“We were not served any letter stopping the election. The electoral committee was never served by anybody. Whoever said he served me a copy of the court order should come and tell us.

“The election has been conducted and the wishes of the people prevailed. It is time to rebuild Umueze Community. For over six years, this community had no leader, today, the people have decided,” the Chairman said.

Armed with the two court orders, the police left the venue of the election leaving the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Military to man the election venue.

The arrival of the Chairman, Umueze Awkunanaw Igweship Electoral Committee, Engr. Okwudiri Daniel Ohaa at the venue of the election at about 11:45am ensured that voting commenced by 12noon

We Came to Observe –  Ministry

The representatives of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs led by the Director Chieftaincy Matters, Ozoagu Ogochukwu told the Umueze people that the ministry was in the community to observe the election.

While commending the good people of Umueze for ensuring a violent-free exercise, she congratulated the Igwe-elect and charged him to lead the people right.

“On behalf theCommissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo and the Executive Governor of Enugu State, our mission in Umueze is to witness how you are going to conduct your Igweship election. It is the right of the community to conduct the Igweship election and the Ministry officials are here to observe the election. Our Mandate is to observe the election and take our report home. Today will be a great day in the life of Umueze people.

“I want to congratulate the Igwe-elect and once again thank the good people of Umueze for the maturity you displayed today in ensuring a free, fair, peaceful, transparent and hitch-free election. I urge the Igwe-elect to be inclusive and sustain the massive support the people expressed in this election,” she said.

Electoral Committee Chairman Announces Results

The Chairman, Umueze Awkunanaw Igweship Electoral Committee, Engr. Okwudiri Daniel Ohaa while announcing the results of the election, called on the people of the community to support the new igwe to achieve his plans for the people.

Engr. Ohaa who also doubles as the Caretaker President-General Umueze Town Union, said that the Igwe–elect will be known as the Igwe Nezoroha 11 of Umueze Kingdom.

He announced that Prince Emeka Ani polled 677 votes to be declared winner of the election while his rival, Elder Patrick Nwafor got 60 votes. A total of 753 votes were cast while 16 were invalid.

“Our Late Igwe Nezoroha 1 died six years ago. Today, we have gotten the Igwe Nezoroha 11. Six years after, we now have a new Igwe, to the glory of God and the good people of Umueze.

“The total number of votes cast are 753: Valid votes, 737; Invalid votes, 16. Scores by the candidates are as follows: Prince Emeka Ani, 677 votes, making 89.907 per cent. Elder Patrick Nwafor, 60 votes, making 7.968 per cent.

Director of ChieftaincyMatter, Ozoagu Ogochukwu addressing the people before the election

“By the power vested on me as the Electoral Committee Chairman for the Umueze Awkunanaw Igweship Electoral Committee, I hereby declare Prince Emeka Ani, having scored the highest number of votes, the Igwe-elect of Umueze Community,” the chairman said.

Umueze is the Project… Igwe Elect

In his acceptance speech, the Igwe-elect, Prince Emeka Ani thanked the people for choosing him to be their King. While acknowledging that the process leading to the election were challenging, he however noted that the priority is to move Umueze forward.

Prince Ani also emphasised that all the electioneering promises he made to the people would be fulfilled and reiterated his determination to work with the Governments of Enugu State and Nkanu West to bring development to the community.

“I want thank the Enugu State, the ministry as well as the Local Government and everybody who made today a success. Our promise is to always collaborate with the Enugu State, the ministry and the Local Government to ensure that whatever plans they have is implemented in Umueze.

“My appreciation also goes to the Electoral Committee for the great job they did. Despite mounting pressure and all challenges, they remained dogged.

“Today, Umueze is the winner. Six years after the death of our former Igwe, his successor has emerged to the glory of God and well-being of Umueze Kingdom. We will move Umueze forward. All the promises we made during campaign, we will fulfil them and do more. What we need is your support.

“Let me tell everybody including our opponents in this process that election is over and a winner has emerged. The main focus now is Umueze as a project. Let’s come together and join hand to make Umueze great,” the Igwe-elect said.

In recent years, we have had people claiming to be our leaders without understanding our problems. The problem is not that they don’t know our issues, but rather that they can’t serve two masters at the same time. How can you live your life outside the country, claim to be satisfied, and then come to Nigeria to become a leader without knowing the root of the problems?

The people who are being led are complaining because their problems are not being solved. First- and second-class citizens have done more harm than good to the nation in terms of leadership. They grew up with their class from day one, without struggles, and associating only with people from the same class.

Some of their rich parents advise them not to associate with others who are not in their class, which is why first-class citizens don’t invite or involve lesser classes. Bringing this to leadership, in a country where major leaders did not attend any public or private school in the country, where leaders travel outside the country for treatment, and where their major friends are not from the country, what do you expect them to give?

“You can’t give what you don’t have.” You can’t expect them to use knowledge and what they saw in developed countries to rule underdeveloped countries like Nigeria. For instance, Hon. Chima Obieze said in one of his articles that the reason he has been collaborating and giving good leadership to his constituents is that he attended public school, played in the streets, and grew up in Nigeria.

This kind of people are the ones Nigeria needs to endorse in leadership because they know the problems of the people and are still working with them. But first-class citizens who studied outside the country won’t know the citizens’ brouhaha because you can’t compare America, for instance, with Nigeria in terms of education, medical facilities, and so on.

Nigeria’s problem will continue because who are to judge the first-class citizens for their bad deeds? Nobody, because they are surrounded by fellow class members. But a poor man from Nigeria will commit the same case and rot in jail.

A leader who doesn’t know the problems of the led is not a leader. Nigerians keep suffering from government policies and political instability, which they are already conversant with because some developed countries use them.

Moving forward, my fellow citizens, this is the problem Nigerians are facing. Some of them are using American or Russian patterns of leadership in an underdeveloped country like Nigeria, so what do you expect them to give? A nation where the judiciary connives with the government, law enforcement agencies intimidate the lesser classes, and freedom of the press is confiscated is doomed.

Prospects for a better Nigeria: our leaders and first-class citizens should make use of the schools, hospitals, and try to associate with people from lesser classes in Nigeria who know what they are doing for guidance and mentorship. By doing so, the leaders will know the problems of Nigerian hospitals, roads, schools, unemployment, and the way forward for good development.

Lastly, first-class citizens should involve the lesser classes and try to be in Nigeria. You can’t grow up in America and rule another country. Every country is different from the other. The lesser classes are human; they deserve better hospitals, schools, roads, and employment. It’s their right as citizens, not a privilege.

The Chairman, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo has urged the newly elected Igwe of Umueze Community to be magnanimous in victory and work in synergy with everybody in the community to achieve the desired results.

The Chairman who stated this in an interview with ESUT Monitor after he came to inspect the election on Saturday, said that the people’s wish should be respected and commended the Umueze people for their peaceful and orderly conduct during the election.

“My aim here is to have a peaceful election. Let it be free, fair, credible and unbiased. I came to inspect the election and to make sure things are moving accordingly. The people should keep it up (their peaceful disposition), they should continue in that manner, because the people are all from Umueze. They are all brothers and sisters, so I don’t see any reason there should be any animosity here. One person must win, the other person will join him to continue, that’s the best thing to do.

R-L: Nkanu West Council ,Chairman, Hon Chukwuma Ogbodo, Chairman, Electoral Committee, Engr Okwudiri Ohaa and the Igwe-elect, Prince Emeka Ani shortly before the announcement of the election result on Saturday April 12 at Umueze Primary School

“The two contestants should know that they’re from Umueze, they are indigenes of Umueze, they are all brothers. Whoever wins, the other should support him to move Umueze to a greater height. There’s no need for fight or quarrel, they are all brothers. I think the best thing for them to do, is to work together in synergy, so as to move Umueze to a greater height.

“The people have spoken and the voice of the people is the voice of God. The Igwe-elect should work in synergy with his opponent, bring the other camp on board and form a united family. Election is over, it is time for leadership and governance. I don’t know their names, the other person should support him, that’s all. And he should also carry the people along, because it’s not a do or die affair. Whoever wins should be able to carry his brother and other people along,” the Chairman said.

He reiterated the local Council’s resolve to work with the new Igwe and empower the people.

“We are the government closest to the people. Irrespective of the winner of the election, the Government of Nkanu West is very much ready to work with the new Igwe in order to bring development to the people. Not having Igwe for the past six years have been a disadvantage to Umueze Community.”

Niger Republic’s military junta has adopted Hausa as the national language in the place of French in a further break from Paris, its former colonial master.

Since overthrowing civilian president Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023, Niger’s military rulers have severed relations with France, kicking out French soldiers and renaming streets and monuments that bore French names

“The national language is Hausa” and “the working languages are English and French”, said a new charter published in a special edition of the official journal on March 31.

Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso — all former French colonies now ruled by juntas — have quit the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a post-colonial entity that resembles the Commonwealth.

Hausa is the most widely spoken language in the country of 26 million, particularly in the central-southern regions of Zinder and Maradi, and in Tahoua in the west.

About 13 percent of the population speaks French, or just over three million people.

Nine other languages, including Zarma-Songhay, Fula, Kanuri, Gourmanche and Arabic, now become “the spoken languages of Niger”, the charter said.

The new charter was the outcome of a national conference in February, which strengthened the ruling junta by authorising junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani to remain in power for the next five years.

The Speaker of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Student Union Government, SUG, Com. Ezema Chukwuemeka has roled out achievements the student body recorded in recent time.

Speaking in an interview with ESUT Monitor, Com. Ezema noted that despite financial challenges, the body has been able to deliver on its mandate and providing facilities and welfare for the students.

“Our administration has been trying, and we have achieved so much in this regime, maintaining our commitment to the university community, making students our major priority. It has not been easy for the union, but we have achieved a lot. I am the first Speaker to travel with his cabinet by air. We amended the constitution of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, which will be used in the coming election for the first time after the constitution was initiated.

“We didn’t stop there; we rebuilt the Student Union Government secretariat and built a bus-stop to enable students to relax and wait for vehicles. We shared toiletries to all faculties to encourage them for personal hygiene. We encountered many challenges while discharging some of our duties as a union; the major one is finance. There is no project without finance, and this has been a hurdle sometimes in making our dream projects come true, he said.

He positioned that “My source of motivation remains my father and Ebeano family, who gave my father an appointment to join their administration. Today, I see it as motivation to do higher,” he said.

Election of new executive members into the ESUT SUG is expected to hold in May
