The National Association of Nigerian Students President, Comr. Akinteye Babtee, has announced the commencement of the disbursement of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, upkeep allowance.

He disclosed this on Saturday via his social media handle.

Comrade Babtee stated that the upgrade of the NELFUND payment platform has been completed, and assured Nigerian students of seamless disbursement.

“With this development, the disbursement of students’ upkeep allowances will commence between Monday and Friday this week.

“All beneficiaries will receive all outstanding payments, covering every month they are owed up to the present month”, he said.

He extended his appreciation to Nigerian students, the beneficiaries, for their patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this period.

“We remain committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure the timely and seamless disbursement of students’ entitlements,” he said.\

This comes after he sanctioned some institutions that withheld students’ money.

It could be recalled that the upkeep allowance, which was established to lessen the burden on parents, stopped two months ago following rumors.

A university professor has blamed Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges and political troubles on poor leadership and has called for major changes in how the country trains its future leaders.

Professor Amunadi Chukwudi made the remarks during his 58th Inaugural Lecture at a university event attended by academics, students, and community leaders. In the lecture, he argued that the nation is suffering from a serious leadership vacuum that allows violence and instability to continue.

“Leadership is at the centre of what a nation becomes,” Prof. Amunadi said. “Instead of dealing with groups and individuals who promote violence and crises, our leaders often look the other way.”

He described the situation as a national crisis and urged a shift from “transactional politics”, where leaders focus only on what they can gain to a more honest and people-centred style of leadership.

Professor Amunnadi Chukwudi

According to the professor, real change must start with a new standard for public service. He proposed three important pillars; Visionary Focus: Leaders should put the welfare of citizens first and create policies that genuinely improve people’s lives; Servant Leadership: Public office should be about serving others, not grabbing power. True leaders, he said, work to wipe away people’s tears and support their happiness; Absolute Accountability: Leaders must be honest, open to public questioning, and ready to operate with full transparency.

A major part of Prof. Amunadi’s lecture focused on the role of universities. He said higher education in Nigeria must go beyond teaching technical skills and also focus on building good character in students.

He called for a complete review of the General Studies curriculum to give more attention to moral education. The professor suggested introducing what he called “theological literacy”, not religious indoctrination, but training in universal values such as ethics, social justice, respect for the rule of law, and compassion.

To make this practical, he recommended stronger partnerships between universities, civil society groups, and religious organisations. He proposed sending students on internships with NGOs and community institutions to develop both knowledge and moral discipline.

The Inugural Lecturer recieiving award from the Chaiiman of Inugural lecture Committee.

Prof. Amunadi urged university authorities to create a dedicated department or programme in Religion Studies and Human Relations. He noted that experts have been pushing for this since 2017.

He criticised the current system for pouring money into technology and science while ignoring the ethical training needed to use these tools responsibly.

For example, he contrasted today’s heavy focus on areas like cyber security and artificial intelligence with what he believes is missing: moral security, core human values, and character development that produces responsible global citizens.

“Philosophy and religion must work together to create a complete education,” he concluded. Only by training leaders who are both intelligent and deeply ethical can Nigeria overcome its current challenges.

When concluding his speech, he gave out the advantages of General studies, in rational thinking and it’s help reduce moral conflict, leadership values and responsible citizenship.

Before giving his vote of thanks, in his words, cited, “Research should also investigate how social media technology, artificial intelligence, influence basic values and behavior. Further research also should investigate how each institution is promoting or disadvantaging the issue of values formation”

‎Students of the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), from 100 Level Cluster 8 and 300 Level Cluster 5, on Friday organized a successful media literacy campaign titled “Smart Screens, Smart Teens: Using Technology Wisely for Learning, Growth and Success” for SS2 students of Judith Foundation International Schools, Awkunanaw in Enugu State.

ESUT Mass Communication Students during the outreach

‎The interactive campaign was aimed at educating the students on the responsible use of technology, online safety, critical thinking, and how digital devices can be used positively for learning and personal development.

‎Speaking during the campaign, one of the student facilitators, Samuel Favour, emphasized that “Nigerian youths should be conscious of what they post on the social media as the internet never forgets,” urging the students to think carefully before posting or sharing information online. The facilitator further advised the students to be smart in their use of digital devices, noting that technology should be used to build a better future rather than create problems.

‎The students actively participated throughout the programme, responding to questions and engaging in discussions. They also enthusiastically echoed the campaign slogan, “Smart Screens, Smart Teens,” demonstrating that they had understood the key message of the programme.

Students of Judith Foundation International Schools

‎As part of the interactive session, prizes were presented to students who correctly answered questions, adding excitement and encouraging active participation.

‎One of the major challenges encountered by the organizers was the limited classroom space, which made it impossible to hold the programme indoors. As a result, the campaign was conducted outside the classroom to accommodate large number of the students.

‎Despite the challenge, the programme recorded great success, thanks to the support of the SS2 form teacher, who coordinated the students effectively and remained with them throughout the session until the programme came to an end.

‎The organizers described the outreach as a rewarding experience, expressing satisfaction with the students’ attentiveness, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. The campaign ended with participants better informed about the importance of using technology responsibly and becoming smart digital citizens.

‎”Smart Screens, Smart Teens!” the students echoed as the programme came to a close, reinforcing the campaign’s message of using technology wisely for learning, growth, and success.

Enugu – The 58th Inaugural Lecturer of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Chukwudi Amunnadi, has called for the deliberate integration of human values, moral formation and theological education into Nigeria’s higher education system as a strategic solution to the nation’s developmental challenges.

Delivering the University’s 58th Inaugural Lecture titled, “Human Values and Moral Formation: A Transformational Panacea for Nation Building,” on Thursday, in Enugu, Professor Amunnadi argued that Nigeria’s most pressing crisis is fundamentally moral rather than political or economic, stressing that sustainable national development can only be achieved through ethical reorientation and character formation.

He noted that while Nigerian universities have traditionally served as centres of knowledge and professional training, they must now intensify efforts toward producing graduates who are morally grounded, ethically responsible and committed to public service.

According to him, the persistence of corruption, insecurity, leadership failure, declining civic responsibility, social injustice and institutional fragility underscores the urgent need for universities to re assess their developmental responsibilities beyond academic excellence.

Professor Amunnadi maintained that the transformation of Nigerian universities should not be limited to improved funding, infrastructure and policy reforms, but should also address the ethical and behavioural challenges including examination malpractice, cultism, corruption, intolerance and declining respect for institutional authority.

He advocated the strategic repositioning of the General Studies (GS) programme as a platform for ethical reorientation, civic responsibility, leadership development and national integration, insisting that it should no longer be regarded as merely a supplementary academic requirement.

The Professor proposed an Ethical–Theological General Studies Transformation Model (ETGSTM), which integrates theological literacy, ethical reflection, civic education, leadership development, gender inclusion and community engagement to restore universities as centres of character formation and public accountability.

Amunnadi further stressed that moral transformation cannot be achieved through curriculum reforms alone but requires lecturers committed to mentorship, administrators who uphold institutional integrity, students prepared for responsible citizenship and universities willing to defend the ethical foundations of society.

He emphasized that scholarship must serve society and challenged higher education institutions to intentionally cultivate graduates who combine intellectual excellence with integrity, discipline and a strong commitment to nation building.

Concluding the lecture, the Professor reiterated that Nigeria’s future depended largely on rebuilding values such as integrity, justice, accountability, responsibility and discipline, noting that ethical consciousness remained indispensable for sustainable national development.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, described inaugural lecture as one of the University’s highest academic traditions, providing distinguished professors the opportunity to present the outcome of years of research, teaching and scholarship to the academic community.

Represented by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Charles Chime, the Vice Chancellor commended Professor Amunnadi for choosing a topic that addresses one of Nigeria’s most urgent challenges, noting that the country had continued to battle corruption, insecurity, erosion of trust, social fragmentation and declining integrity despite advances in science, technology and infrastructure.

According to the Vice Chancellor, no nation can rise above the moral standard of her citizens, stressing that character, honesty, discipline and commitment to the common good remained indispensable to sustainable development.

Professor Okolie also stated that universities have a responsibility not only to produce engineers, doctors, scientists and administrators but also graduates who are compassionate, ethical, innovative and committed to service, adding that schools, families, religious institutions and universities must collectively become centres for moral and character formation.

100-level students of the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), on Friday, July 10, 2026, organised a media literacy campaign for senior secondary school students at Day Secondary School, Enugu. The outreach also served as a practical research project for 300-level Mass Communication students in Clusters 3 and 9, who administered pre- and post-campaign questionnaire to assess the students‘ knowledge level of media literacy before and after the programme.

The campaign, themed “Teens and Digital Engagement: Own Your Feed, Own Your Mind,” aimed to educate students on the safe and responsible use of digital media while assessing their knowledge of media literacy.

Before the campaign commenced, copies of questionnaire were distributed to the students as part of a research project titled “The Impact of Media Literacy Education on Day Secondary School Students, Enugu.” A second set of questionnaire was administered after the programme to evaluate what the students had learned.

Team Mass Comm. Student-researchers

Speaking during the programme, Nwobodo Chioma Rita, the first speaker, educated the students on “Understanding the Digital World” and the dangers associated with it. She highlighted issues such as misinformation and fake news, deepfakes and AI-generated content, cyberbullying, online scams, invasion of privacy, and exposure to inappropriate online content as the negative consequences of the social media

She also introduced the SIFT method as a practical guide for verifying online information. According to her, “Users should Stop, Investigate the Source, Find Better Coverage, and Trace the Original Content before believing or sharing information found online.

The second speaker, Abigail Godwin, educated the students on the topic, “Staying Safe Online.”. During her presentation, videos were projected to demonstrate how deepfake technology works and the dangers it poses. She also shared practical internet safety tips, including protecting personal information, enabling privacy settings, using strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, downloading applications only from trusted sources, shopping on secure websites, and thinking carefully before posting on social media.

Day Sec Sch students during the programme on Friday

The third speaker, Alum Angel Chiamaka while speaking on the topic, “Digital Skills,” encouraged the students to acquire skills that could help them earn income online. Speaking after the event, Chukwuene Rejoice said her passion for computers motivated her to participate in the programme.

“I became interested in the campaign immediately I saw the banner on media literacy because I believed it would be an interesting topic. I have learned about digital skills like graphic design and content creation, as well as the dangers in the digital space. I have also seen cases of cyberbullying, and today I learned the importance of not sharing private information online,” she said.

Also speaking, Ugwu Promise Amarachi, a 300-level Mass Communication student, commended the department for providing students with practical research experience.

The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has expressed deep appreciation to the law enforcement agencies and critical stakeholders in the state for their unbiased and dispassionate roles leading to a successful outcome of the Students Union Government, SUG Election in the university.

Speaking with newsmen in his office shortly after voting had concluded on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor, said that certain elements operating outside the confines of the University bandied fake news and misleading information against ESUT Management with a view to halting the election but their manipulative tendencies were thwarted .

Prof. Okolie explained that 42 aspirants for the SUG election failed to appear for a security screening conducted by the Intelligence Unit and Anti-Cult operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the affected aspirants, who were suspected to have links with cult groups, failed to appear for screening and were automatically disqualified from participating in the election in line with the University’s zero-tolerance policy on cultism.

“For the past one year, there has been misinformation, interference and blackmail against the University Management regarding the SUG election. The reality is that Management has been confronting dark forces represented by cult groups seeking to take over the leadership of the Students’ Union Government in ESUT,” he said.

“We will not allow that because ESUT Management maintains a zero-tolerance stance on cultism. Some individuals occupying strategic positions have continued to spread false reports, lies and slander against the University Management.

“As Chairman of the state-owned tertiary institutions in Enugu State, I am deeply concerned that cult-related activities are becoming prevalent across higher institutions in the state.”

Prof. Okolie called on the Visitor to the University and Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, to investigate developments surrounding SUG elections in the institution with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the alleged malfeasances.

Dean, Student Affairs ESUT, Prof Ifeome Okwo

The Vice Chancellor described the SUG election, held on Tuesday, as peaceful, credible and transparent, noting that it was conducted electronically to eliminate manipulation and violence.

“As voting progressed, results were displayed in real time. The voting portal, which remained open for the period, allowed each eligible student to cast only one vote. Only bona fide students who had paid their school fees participated in the exercise. The University Management had no preferred candidate because all contestants are students of the institution,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor also expressed the preparedness of the University Management to extend this e-voting technology to all levels of voting in Nigeria, adding that the model remained most appropriate for grooming future political leaders through transparent, convenient and violence-free elections.

He also noted that the exercise was monitored by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, from the control room.

Prof. Okolie further stated that despite what he described as attempts to discredit the process, the Enugu State Government remained confident in the University’s management, enabling the election to proceed without disruption.

Meanwhile, at the end of the election, Comrade Nwobodo Isaac Chidera emerged President-elect of the ESUT Students’ Union Government after polling 2,002 votes, defeating his closest rival, Comrade Agbo Jeremiah Chika, who secured 299 votes.

Also Com. Nevo Precious Chisom emerged Vice President-elect after polling 1356 votes while Comrades Amaechi Gideon, Eze Favour Chibuike and Asogwa Kelechi Genevieve won the posts of Treasurer, Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General respectively.

The new leadership of the students body will be sworn-in later.

The Department of Mass Communication on Friday emerged champions of the 2026 Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) Freshers League.

The league which was contested by 100 level students in each department in the university, saw the communicators emerge champions after winning Computer Science Department 4-3 on penalties. The regulation had ended 1-1

Computer Science had every reason to think the game was won by half-time. They hadn’t scored, but they’d done everything else — eight shots to Mass Comm’s one, three on target, corners stacking up in their favour, and a Mass Comm goalkeeper who barely touched the ball but somehow looked like the busiest man on the pitch.

Computer Science (CSC) pressed, probed, and camped in front of goal for most of the first forty-five minutes. Every buildup looked the same: patient spells of possession in midfield, a ball worked wide, a cross or cutback into the box, and then nothing to finish it off. They just couldn’t find the goal their play deserved.

For a spell it looked like the kind of first half that gets replayed in a coach’s head long after the final whistle — all the right ingredients, none of them paid off. Mass Comm, by contrast, spent most of the opening forty-five defending in numbers, happy to sit deep, break up play, and let the opponents have the ball in areas that didn’t hurt them. It wasn’t pretty, but it was working. They went in at the break down on the stat sheet — one shot on target to CSC’s eight — but level on the scoreboard, which in a cup final is the only column that counts.

Whatever was said at half-time, it showed almost immediately. Mass Comm came out for the second half a different side — higher up the pitch, more willing to commit bodies forward, no longer content to just soak up pressure. Computer Science’s breakthrough, when it came, felt like a fair reward for the balance of play: Jiggy finished off a passage of pressure that had been building since kickoff and sent the CSC bench into celebration. It was the goal the first half had promised.

It didn’t last. Mass Comm’s response was almost instant — Salah got in behind and levelled the score before CSC could settle back into their rhythm, and from that point the game changed shape entirely. What had been a one-sided territorial battle turned into an open contest, end to end, both sides now trading chances instead of one side manufacturing them.

The shot count by full-time told the story of that shift: 13 for Computer Science, 12 for Mass Comm — a gap of one, compared to the seven-shot gulf at the break. And in the column that actually decides games, shots on target, Mass Comm had nosed ahead, 7 to 6.

Neither side eased off after the goals went in — if anything, the game got more combative. Fouls piled up on both ends, CSC finishing with eleven to Mass Comm’s five, a fair reflection of how much harder the game had to be fought once it turned into a genuine contest. Both goalkeepers earned their keep late on too, combining for eleven saves between them, denying good chances at both ends as the clock ran down. Nobody wanted to be the side that blinked, and for ninety minutes, nobody did.

With the scores still level after normal time, the final went to penalties — the cruellest way to decide a game, and the fairest test of nerve. Mass Comm held theirs better. They converted when it mattered, and when CSC’s fourth attempt didn’t find the net, the shootout — and the tournament — belonged to Mass Comm, 4-3.

It’s a hard way for CSC to lose a final they controlled for long stretches, especially after a first-half showing that should have put the game out of reach and Jiggy’s opener that looked, for a few minutes, like the moment that would define the match. But cup finals rarely reward the team that dominates for forty-five minutes; they reward whoever adjusts and holds their nerve for all ninety, plus whatever comes after. Mass Comm changed their approach at the break, rode Salah’s equalizer to level terms, and finished the job from the spot when it mattered most.
