The University Librarian of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Dr. Uzoamaka Ogwo, has outlined significant infrastructural and digital advancements achieved within her first year in office, attributing the library’s turnaround to the active support of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie

Speaking in an interview with ESUT Monitor in her office on Thursday on the operational state of the Library, Dr. Ogwo described her initial 12 months as a period of strategic learning, growth, and structural renewal despite initial hurdles.

According to the Librarian, her immediate priority upon assuming office in 2025 was establishing basic institutional visibility, noting that the building lacked basic signage and identity

“The Vice Chancellor approved the installation of a proper signpost to make the library easily identifiable to students, lecturers, visitors, and new users. That was the first key strategic action I under took on assumption of office,” Dr. Ogwo revealed.

Detailing environmental improvements, Dr. Ogwo explained that the surrounding grounds were cleared after university management deployed heavy equipment to clean the premises, creating a safer learning environment for refreshing reading adventure. .

Addressing infrastructural upgrades, the University Librarian stated that long standing defects were systematically repaired ahead of the university’s recent academic accreditation exercises. She highlighted that leaking roofs and ceilings were mended, damaged reading carrels and floor tiles restored, and safety handrails installed.

In the area of technological development, Dr. Ogwo announced the deployment of a web based Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), enabling remote access to academic resources across the globe.

Dr Ogwo during the interview on Thursday

“We have been able to develop a robust digital library system that one can access from any part of the globe,” Dr. Ogwo stated, explaining that students can now browse books, journals, and databases from their hostels or off campus locations.

She further disclosed that internet infrastructure was installed inside the building, granting users access to global academic repositories like ProQuest and Research4Life.

To solve persistent power outages, Dr. Ogwo disclosed that the university management installed a 30KVA solar power system, effectively ending reliance on generators.

“The installation of the solar power system has provided the University Library with a dependable and environmentally friendly alternative source of electricity, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for critical library services. The system now supports the continuous operation of computers, internet facilities, wireless networks, digital library platforms, the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), institutional repository services, lighting, and other essential electronic infrastructure within the library

“You can come to the library, you have light from morning till night, 24/7 there is light in the library,” she affirmed, calling the continuous power supply “a very big plus” for the institution and appreciated the management for its support.

Linking these upgrades to academic results, Dr. Ogwo emphasized that management’s backing directly contributed to ESUT’s recent accreditation success, where 20 out of 21 assessed programmes secured full approval, achieving a 99.9 percent pass rate.

Outlining ongoing challenges, the Librarian pointed to limited funding, personnel shortages due to retirements and deaths, and the need for complete environmental landscaping.

However, Dr. Ogwo expressed optimism that management would act on a pending landscaping proposal and appealed to the students to utilize the upgraded services.

“I want to express my gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and his management team for their support. He is a lover of the library and has done everything we have requested. Providing solar power was a game changer for us as well as the internet connectivity.

“I want to appeal to the students to make the Library their second home. Readers, they say, are leaders. What differentiates you from your fellow students is basically on the informational available to you. Library registration is free, so why would they not access the facility? If not because of the students, we will not be here,” Dr. Ogwo noted, urging students to register and maximize the physical and digital research tools provided for their academic growth.

When the Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, appointed him to take over as the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, ESUT, in 2023, everywhere was quiet for those who love academic cut corners and full of excitement for those who want total reformation from the old system to the new one.

It wasn’t easy at all for Dr. Ezinwa because the department, despite being one of the best in ESUT in terms of academic discipline, had some age long niggling unresolved issues that affected cordial staff relationships, which made gossip full of lies trend and thrive.

As someone who has been in the department for almost 13 years, I can beat my chest and say that Dr. Ezinwa, as usual, improved tremendously on what was achieved by his predecessors within his three years in office. His first year was a total mess up and clean up period, as he spent his time, resources and energy resolving an issue that the department had with one of the security agencies after a petition was written. That period was hell for the former departmental board secretary because he is someone who isn’t always around to understand the maneuverings and met a system where everyone was almost leaving and fearing another.

The Nachi born political communication and Media law expert started by nipping issues in the bud. First, he appointed an exam officer to ensure that issues that had to do with exam coordination, monitoring, result preparation and execution were settled. This was after he personally met with all the professors in the department to seek their advice on the way forward because he was afraid to fail. He proceeded with redocumenting the departmental album to ensure that exams were written sequentially without any iota of impersonation or disorganisation.

Dr Ezinwa re-establsihed Mass Communication TV Studio

One of the things that always put fear in Dr. Ezinwa was the fear of failure. The young man does not want to fail at all. So, he began the reformation of the PG programme to ensure that all outstanding issues were resolved, and till today, our PG programme is one of the best, as it has continued graduating students on record time. Dr. Ezinwa became the first HOD to graduate PG students in record time in the department in almost two decades after reviewing and updating the curriculum. Consequently, the programme has witnessed a significant increase in students enrollment in the last two academic sessions.

He then organised a staff training programme for newly employed staff. The school employed over nine staff between 2020 and 2021, which I am part of, into the department without any staff orientation and training, and it made us not know our left from our right. The training brought together all the staff in the department, as well as others from various departments, to educate the newly employed staff on the workings of a university system. This staff orientation and training helped in making sure that everyone understood his or her job and also the limitations, and that was where he started advancing in progress as the HOD in sprint race form.

Dr. Ezinwa then began the work of improving the infrastructure that aided practicals for the students, and with the help of the Vice Chancellor and ESUT alumni, ESUT Radio came back to life, same with ESUT TV. Let me say the ugly truth: the current radio station would have been dead without the commitment and support of his administration. On getting involved, he facilitated the construction of the transmitter room, installed an air conditioner, among other rearrangements that ensured the sustenance of the station. I personally stayed away from getting involved in the radio station because I don’t want to be spending my resources to do the work effectively as a perfectionist and also be getting bad names or being used as a gossip topic by many staff who see the institution as their all and all.

Under Dr Ezinw’s headship, Mass Communication Dept got re-accredited with 85 per cent NUC Pass Mark

He also created a staff parents interactive WhatsApp platform, where parents enquire about the academic performance of their offspring, lay complaints and get the issues resolved. This helped tremendously in changing the attitude to studies of many students in the department. It is on record that during the 2026 matriculation ceremony of the school in our faculty, which I was the official MC, a parent took the microphone and said that he flew from Lagos to Enugu to appreciate the Mass Communication Department and ESUT for such an initiative and also recommended that others follow suit.

He also galvanized the ex students and created a platform where they interact and discuss issues that will positively impact the students. This yielded the 1991 set planning to visit the school during their reunion to embark on some projects that will enhance academic growth after inviting him during their annual general meeting in 2024.

He brought in Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival (ENIFF), where the students engage with professional movie makers and practitioners to get first hand information about the profession. During one of the ENIFF programmes, a sum of $500 was promised as a grant, which is being processed.

MacArthur Foundation also came to train our students on news writing and reporting, where the best were issued certificates and introduced to so many employment platforms.

The Nachi born scholar enhanced partnership with West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA), which now also supports the training of our students in so many areas in the broadcasting field. He went further to facilitate another partnership with Choice Flame Newspaper and Afia TV on internships, training and production for both staff and students. Aside from this, he also created a departmental website, email address and revitalised the online journal.

His administration also attracted socialites like Okwulora and Naniboy, who always visit from time to time to motivate the students and empower them with financial support.

He also attracted ESUT Cinema, where students visit on weekends to cool off the stress of the week and also enhance their social life, after restoring power supply in a department that was in darkness for four years.

Dr Ezinwa delivering a lecture during 2026 World Communication Day in May

Under Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, indecent dressing to classes became a crime. You must wear proper departmental uniform with other apparels and hairstyles approved by the department. Lecturers who wished began a full implementation of 75% class attendance during exams, which increased academic participation and development among the students. Course registration became a must, as he ensured that students attended carryover lectures before writing the exams. To him, writing a carryover is not an automatic pass, and so, a student must participate in all the class activities, be qualified to rewrite the exam, register his courses, write well in the exam to enable him or her to scale through, or come back to try again. All these were also part of the strategies that he used to reduce issues of non ICT results, where students forge results without the consent of the lecturers. In fact, to submit a Non ICT result under him, the student must provide evidence of participating in the exam, as well as a letter from the course lecturer who issued the said results.

What about academic advisory? Dr. Ezinwa streamlined academic advisory in a way that level advisers advise from year one till the graduation of a particular set, an act that leads to better knowledge and understanding of each student, leading to better advisory. In ESUT Mass Communication Department under him, level advisers are not allowed to sign files for students outside their designated class.

Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa’s leadership made the Mass Communication Department become a reference point for examination conduct in the school. As an ex faculty and school Examination Marshal, I will beat my chest and tell you that the Department of Mass Communication gives you a clear idea of what examination looks like, even ahead of Medical Sciences and Law in ESUT, courtesy of him. It is on record that the department has zero tolerance for examination misconduct and malpractice.

A no nonsense man that he is, Dr. Ezinwa’s administration has no single case of result scandal. He eradicated every avenue that could bring result manipulation, as always seen in Nigerian institutions, and ensured that any Second Class, First Class or Third Class is a deserved one and not what was erroneously given or bought, as we do hear in other institutions, including ESUT.

He crafted a system whereby students now see their results status on a semester basis, including parents for those that care. This means that any results or grades cannot be manipulated at the final collation centre, and if it does happen, it can be traced.

Dr. Ezinwa stopped the character of “please give me mark, I want to upgrade my GP from 2.2 to 2.1, you don’t need to write carryover, just pay one of the non academic staff or the person computing the results or someone in Exams and Record, and it will be wiped out, you can go to service without graduation” and other slangs used by some university cabals to scuttle academic excellence.

The HOD in an interview with ESUT Monitor in his office

He revitalised ESUT Monitor newspaper, which has expanded to become a reference point for those who teach rural communication and community press in various institutions. The newspaper has so far produced more than seven editions and has been active online, especially on social media platforms. Many who don’t know about it do think that it is the University’s newspaper, all because of Dr. Ezinwa’s impact.

Under his leadership, the department, for the first time in almost two decades, started embarking on industrial training (IT) to bridge the gap between classroom and field experience. This has brought so many good experiences for the students, as they had the opportunity of interacting with industry professionals to learn more and gather experience.

One of the many good things about him is that, once he gives you work, he does not interfere, and he knows where someone would work better and puts the person with constant monitoring and review. He also has a high interest in hearing from all parties when issues or complaints come up, which gives whoever is working with him a sense of trust, security and safety.

Dr. Ezinwa’s Mass Communication Department, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and community engagement , embarked on media literacy campaigns across communities, towns and even the university environment to educate the public on how to identify misinformation, verify information, recognise credible sources, understand media messages and make informed decisions in an increasingly digital society. During the said outings, issues concerning children’s rights, child protection, responsible parenting, gender equality, online safety, protection of children from abuse and exploitation, and the need to provide a safe and supportive environment for children were communicated directly to the people. The campaigns also used the opportunity to sensitise the people on the importance of protecting the dignity, welfare and future of children and encouraging them to speak up whenever children’s rights are violated. This is because As a child rights activist, he believes that a university should give back to society, which was what prompted the Media literacy campaigns in secondary schools to protect our children from the impact of phone and AI in the digital age. This campaign was effectively led by Dr Okwudiri Ekwe, a staff of the department on leave of absence who had made numerous sacrifices for progress of the department.

The pinnacle of his achievements was securing full NUC accreditation for the department, which ensures that the programme is sustained for the next four academic years.

Dr Ezinwa with ESUT Monitor Reporters during an assignment in Enugu

From a personal point of view, Dr. Ezinwa’s major regret is his inability to unbundle the department to create more room for further academic excellence, despite his numerous efforts and sleepless nights. Anybody who wants to change an existing culture in any environment would always cherish working with him, but those coming to cut corners will be frustrated to the brim.

His administration has also shown that leadership in an academic environment is not only about making policies but also about creating systems that can outlive the person in charge. The structures he introduced have given the department a stronger sense of order, responsibility and accountability. He gave many young lecturers the opportunity to contribute, learn and take responsibility while allowing experienced members of staff to share their knowledge. His willingness to listen before taking decisions also made many people feel valued. For students, the changes have created a clearer understanding of what is expected of them academically and morally. For staff, the reforms have provided a more organised working environment. These are the kinds of changes that may not always be fully appreciated while they are happening, but their value becomes clearer with time.

I am happy to be part of your success, and I am very glad that you are one of the few who so much believe in me and what I stand for. As you bow out of office, I wish you all the best and a sabbatical where you can rest and rejig your tank because it was three years of restlessness. I also wish your successor the best, with a strong belief that he will perform better than you.

Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has upgraded its Postgraduate School to a full College of Postgraduate Studies, a strategic transition aimed at elevating the quality of advanced education and boosting the institution’s global academic standing.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, the Provost of the new College, Professor Charles Chime, disclosed that the University Senate approval of the upgrade formalizes a collegiate structure that the university had effectively operated for years under the former postgraduate school system.

“It means a transition to a higher pedestal in PG administration,” Prof. Chime stated. “It is tailored towards improving the academic quality of postgraduate education and also enhancing our visibility to the global community.”

Explaining the operational shift, the Provost noted that the former Postgraduate School already coordinated academic offerings across faculties rather than allowing departments to operate independently.
“If it were a school system, the various faculties will handle their programme themselves without recourse to coordination. But in the college system, everything is harmonized.”

Detailing the administrative restructuring, the Provost highlighted that while the Vice Chancellor remains at the apex of the college, the executive head of the unit now transitions from the title of Dean to Provost. To strengthen internal governance, he revealed that two Deputy Provosts will soon be appointed to oversee distinct academic portfolios: one for Sciences, Engineering, and Technology, and another for Social Sciences, Management, and Humanities. This new framework replaces the former single Associate Dean model.

According to figures disclosed by the Provost, the College currently caters to between 4,000 and 5,000 students, having admitted approximately 1,400 postgraduate candidates in the outgoing session alone.
Looking ahead, Prof. Chime revealed that the university is targeting a long term enrollment figure of 7,000 to 10,000 postgraduate students.

The Provost, Prof Chime with ESUT Monitor Deputy News Editor, Ali Hope during the interview on Thursday

Attributing the recent surge in postgraduate admissions to institutional reforms, the Provost explained that the college has introduced strict measures to eliminate academic delays and prevent students from abandoning their programs midway.

“We have put measures in place to ensure that students don’t overstay, maintaining synergy between supervisors and students to ensure graduation is not delayed,” he said, praising university lecturers for complying with the new efficiency standards.
Reflecting on initial operational hurdles, Prof. Chidume acknowledged that the postgraduate program previously faced oversight and infrastructural deficits.

“The PG school then didn’t have good, proper oversight of what happens in the faculties,” he observed.

To resolve this, the Provost outlined key interventions, including deploying official college representatives to every thesis defense across all departments and faculties to ensure uniform quality control and accurate record keeping.

LAGOS — Dr. David Okelue Ugwunta, Senior Lecturer in Banking and Finance at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and former Honourable Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Enugu State, has brought his practical experience in public financial management and fiscal governance into a national conversation on the digital transformation of military financial management.

Ugwunta was a Discussant at the Fifteenth Nigerian Army Finance Corps Officers’ Biennial Training Conference, held from 9–14 August 2026 at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA), Apapa, Lagos. The conference was themed “Leveraging Digital Financial Technology and Professionalism for Enhanced Troops Morale Needed for Mission Success.”

The conference provided a platform for senior officers and financial management professionals to examine how technology, professionalism, accountability and stronger financial controls can improve resource management and support military effectiveness.

In his opening remarks, the Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army), Major General T. T. Sidick, underscored the importance of professionalising and transforming the Nigerian Army Finance Corps (NAFC) to respond to the demands of contemporary military financial management. His emphasis reflected the need for stronger financial controls, professional competence, accountability and the effective deployment of digital technology to improve resource stewardship and provide timely financial information for command decisions.

That institutional perspective provided an important backdrop to Ugwunta’s intervention.

From the Budget & Planning Ministry to the Nigerian Army Finance Corps

Ugwunta participated in the interactive session following the lecture, “Achieving Digital Financial Technology Transformation in the Nigerian Army Finance Corps for Enhanced Financial Management and Effective Decision Support for the Nigerian Army,” delivered by Major General A. A. Ayannuga (Rtd.).

Rather than simply reiterating the technical arguments in the lead presentation, Ugwunta drew on his experience as Honourable Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Enugu State, from 2019 to 2023, during the administration of former Governor Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi.

Dr Ugwunta recieving an award

As Commissioner, Ugwunta was directly involved in economic planning, budget formulation, implementation monitoring, fiscal policy, and performance reporting. That experience led him to conceive an integrated digital approach to the State’s budget cycle one in which Ministries, Departments and Agencies could prepare or upload budget proposals through an online platform, while the central budget authority could access, review and interrogate submissions during budget bilateral discussions and integrate approved proposals into the final budget.

For Ugwunta, however, the more important question was what happened after appropriation.

His proposed architecture envisaged the digital connection of budgeting, implementation, accounting, reporting, auditing and decision-making, enabling government to see at any point what had been received as revenue; approved, released, committed and spent as expenditure, identify variances and emerging financing pressures, and use the information to advise government and initiate appropriate corrective action.

Beyond Paperless Finance

Ugwunta argued that digital financial transformation should not be reduced to electronic payments or the computerisation of existing processes.

“The future of financial management is not simply paperless finance. It is integrated, intelligent and auditable finance.”

He proposed a Digital Financial Management Continuum:

Planning Budgeting Appropriation Implementation Accounting Reporting Auditing Analysis Decision.

In his view, the real value of digital transformation lies in connecting these functions so that the budget, accounting records, financial reports and audit information are generated from a common and reliable information architecture.

He stressed that the NAFC should be able to move from asking simply “what has happened?” to understanding “what is happening, what is likely to happen, what financing risk is emerging and what requires intervention?”

From Financial Data to Decision Intelligence

A central feature of Ugwunta’s contribution was the idea of a secure NAFCfinancial dashboard capable of providing decision-makers with real-time visibility of approved budgets, revenue, releases, commitments, expenditure, outstanding obligations, performance, variances and emerging financial pressures.

Such a system, he argued, should incorporate management by exception, automatically drawing attention to significant deviations, unusual transactions, underperforming programmes or emerging financial risks.

He also emphasised accounting and auditing as integral components of digital transformation.

Rather than treating audit as an activity that begins after transactions have occurred, digital systems can embed controls into financial processes, generate complete audit trails and use data analytics to identify unusual or high-risk transactions for timely review.

This, he argued, would move financial management from predominantly retrospective reporting towards continuous, risk-based and intelligence-driven assurance.

The position resonates with the broader direction of the conference. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by Maj.-Gen. Garba Ibrahim who called for tighter financial controls, stronger accountability, digital auditing, financial analytics, cybersecurity and data-driven decision-making, stressing the connection between sound financial management, troop welfare and operational readiness.

From Digital Transactions to Digital Command

For Ugwunta, the ultimate objective is not technology for its own sake.

Dr Ugwunta during the discussion

“The real measure of digital financial transformation should not be how many transactions we process electronically. The test is whether we can transform financial data into reliable information, reliable information into intelligence, and intelligence into informed and smart public financing decisions.”

He however supported the advocate for a phased and multistakeholder implementation approach.

The intervention reflects the convergence of Ugwunta’s academic and public-sector career. In addition to his role as Senior Lecturer at ESUT, he serves as Senior Adviser (Economic) at Thoughts & Mace Advisory and works as an Independent Consultant with UNICEF, Enugu Field Office on Public Finance for Children. His professional work spans public financial management, fiscal policy, economic planning, public debt accountability, governance and development finance.

His participation at the Nigerian Army Finance Corps Fifteenth Biennial Conference therefore represented more than an academic engagement. It demonstrated how lived experience in government can be translated into practical policy ideas for strengthening financial management beyond the environment in which that experience was acquired.

For Ugwunta, the journey is clear: From digital transactions, to digital financial management, and ultimately to digital Corp decision support.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved an additional N115 million monthly subvention for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), raising the state government’s total monthly funding to the institution from N161 million to N276 million.

The governor also appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ESUT chapter, to suspend its ongoing strike and return to the classrooms, assuring that outstanding issues would be addressed through constructive dialogue.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the latest intervention brought the cumulative increase in the state’s monthly subvention to ESUT to N140 million since February 2026.

According to him, the additional funding was aimed at strengthening the university’s capacity to meet its financial obligations, particularly its responsibilities to staff and students, while ensuring the continued delivery of quality academic services.

“Governor Mbah has demonstrated once again that his administration places the welfare of workers and the uninterrupted education of our young people at the heart of its priorities.

“This additional N115 million monthly intervention is a substantial commitment of public resources aimed at strengthening ESUT and ensuring that the institution can meet its obligations to its staff and students,” Onyia said.

The SSG explained that before February 2026, the state government provided N136 million monthly to ESUT. In February, however, it introduced an additional N25 million monthly intervention for the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM) to support the payment of 120 additional staff, bringing the total monthly government support to N161 million.

He said the latest N115 million increase would bring the government’s monthly subvention to N276 million and assist ESUT in meeting the salary agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.

Onyia appealed to ASUU-ESUT members to reciprocate the government’s intervention by suspending the industrial action and resuming academic activities to prevent further disruption to students’ academic progress.

“We appeal to ASUU-ESUT to reciprocate this gesture by resuming academic activities, while all outstanding issues are addressed through constructive dialogue.

“Our students should not be made to bear the consequences of disagreements that can be resolved amicably,” he said.

The SSG reaffirmed Governor Mbah’s commitment to the welfare of workers and the sustained development of ESUT, stressing that the substantial increase in funding demonstrated the administration’s priority for education and an uninterrupted academic calendar.

He urged ESUT management and ASUU to embrace dialogue and work collaboratively towards resolving the outstanding issues, saying the ultimate objective should be to guarantee students uninterrupted and quality education.

Onyia assured the university community that the Mbah administration would continue to support ESUT within available resources and take necessary measures to strengthen the institution and position it to fulfil its mandate as a leading university of science and technology.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), during its 59th inaugural lecture, has called on Nigerians to embrace sustainable agriculture as a means of promoting economic development, reducing poverty and ensuring food security.

The inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof. Emeka Nzeh on Thursday at the Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium, Ebeano City.

Speaking during the lecture, the Professor of Agriculture Economics described agriculture as one of the world’s largest industries, employing more than one billion people and generating over $1.3 trillion worth of food annually.

He noted that pasture and cropland occupy about 50 per cent of the Earth’s habitable land and provide habitat and food for numerous species. According to him, when agricultural operations are sustainably managed, they can preserve and restore critical habitats, protect watersheds, and improve soil health and water quality.

He, however, warned that unsustainable agricultural practices have serious consequences for both people and the environment.

Participants at the lecture

“Unsustainable actions in the environment lead to less economic empowerment in society, thereby resulting in an increase in poverty,” he said.

Prof. Nzeh emphasized the urgent need for sustainable agriculture and effective management of economic resources, noting that the demand for agricultural commodities is rising rapidly as the world’s population continues to grow.
He explained that agriculture’s close relationship with the global economy, human societies and biodiversity makes it one of the most important areas for conservation and sustainable development.

“By the year 2050, our planet will be home to an additional two billion people. How will farm products sustain them all? Not only will there be more people, but there will also be the challenge of high inflation,” he said.

According to Prof. Nzeh, his research indicates the need to identify and implement better agricultural management practices, particularly those that promote sustainability, empower the economy and reduce poverty.

He advocated the creation of financial incentives to encourage biodiversity conservation, improvement of agricultural policies and the identification of new income opportunities for farmers and other producers.

He explained that sustainable agriculture could significantly contribute to economic empowerment by creating jobs, fostering rural development and promoting global trade, particularly in developing countries where agricultural growth has a strong impact on poverty reduction.
Prof. Nzeh further highlighted the role of innovation, including agricultural technology (agri-tech) and precision farming, in improving productivity and ensuring food security.

According to him, agriculture serves as a crucial engine of economic transformation by increasing incomes, improving nutrition and creating employment opportunities for vulnerable populations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria and Enugu State.

He said growth in the agricultural sector is a powerful tool for reducing poverty and improving the livelihoods of millions of people, particularly those in rural and developing communities.

According to him, “increased agricultural output and productivity can drive economic transformation and contribute significantly to national development.”

He further stressed the importance of agriculture to food security and nutrition, explaining that increased food production leads to healthier and more productive populations, which are essential to long-term economic development.

Prof. Nzeh said Nigeria, despite its abundant natural resources, continues to face significant environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges. And maintained that the adoption of sustainable resource management approaches could have far-reaching effects on the country’s development.

“Sustainable resource use is increasingly recognized as essential for balancing environmental integrity, economic growth and social equity,” he said.
