The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) will today hold its 52nd Inaugural Lecture.

Colloquially regarded as the “Academic Ofalla”, the 52nd Inaugural Lecture will be delivered by Professor Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe.

 Anchored on the theme: “Engineering Solutions for a Healthier Tomorrow” Professor Nwobodo-Nzeribe will be dissecting the imperatives and usefulness of engineering in making the society better.

The Lecture will hold at the Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah multipurpose Auditorium in ESUT Main Campus, Agbani starting by 11am.

Professor Nwobodo-Nzeribe, the ESUT Director of Research and Innovation and the pioneer Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, stands as a iconic figure in Nigerian academia. Her lecture is historic, as she will be the first female Professor of Engineering in ESUT’s history to deliver an Inaugural Lecture, cementing her status as a role model and a vanguard for women in STEM.

Frsh from her one-month visit to Germany on vocational training, Prof. Nwobodo-Nzeribe’s distinguished career is built on a foundation of robust international education and a commitment to interdisciplinary research. Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and advanced postgraduate studies, including an MPhil in Biomedical Technology from Anglia Ruskin University, UK. This unique blend of computer and biomedical engineering expertise has enabled her to foster significant international collaborations with institutions in the UK and China, bringing global recognition to ESUT.

Her professional stature is affirmed by her registration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and her membership in numerous prestigious bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in the United States, and the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), where she served as the immediate past branch chairman. She is also a Fellow of the College of Biomedical Engineers and Technologists of Nigeria.

The professor’s scholarly output is as impressive as her administrative and professional achievements. With a prolific publication record that includes over 46 Journal research papers in indexed in google scholar, SJR, resaerch gate and thomson ruter respectively. Published over 15 conference papers, and 10 authored books, her work has consistently contributed to the global body of engineering knowledge. Her research is readily accessible on major platforms like Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and others, ensuring wide dissemination and impact.

The lecture is expected to be a synthesis of this vast body of work, presenting a cohesive vision of how engineering can directly confront health and societal challenges. Attendees can anticipate insights into cutting-edge developments in smart medical devices, health informatics, and innovative systems designed for practical, life-enhancing applications.

Professor Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe a Professor of Computer Engineering and the 52nd Inaugural Lecturer of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), who is also the Director of research and innovation ESUT has shared her impressions about the inaugural lecture.

She stated that “My inaugural lecture is a time for me as a professor to showcase my scholarship and communicate to a wider audience what I have achieved in the academic space.”

As a leader within the university and society at large, she positioned that the inaugural lecture reflects her academic and professional journey.

Prof. Nwobodo-Nzeribe has been focused on finding solutions to make life easier for people to live healthier lives. “Health is wealth. When people are healthy, they can think about how to better the lots of others and make the society a better place for all of us,” she emphasized.

She and her team have developed biomedical devices to improve lives using engineering. Specifically, they have designed a walking stick for the visually impaired and developed smart heart and thermometer devices. These innovations aim to improve lives in Nigeria.

Through her inaugural lecture, Prof. Nzeribe-Nwobodo aims to showcase her achievements, communicate her knowledge to a broader audience, and inspire others. As a thought leader within the university and society, she encourages people to attend the event to acquire knowledge that will provide solutions to human needs.

The 52nd Inaugural Lecture will hold on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at the Dr Peter Mbah multipurpose Auditorium, ESUT, Agbani starting from 11am.

An erudite scholar, Professor Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe, the first female Professor in Computer Engineering in South-East, is set to deliver the 52nd Inaugural Lecture of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s (ESUT) erudite.

This lecture has become a tradition and a platform for research and innovation, showcasing the university’s academic excellence since the administration of Professor Aloysius Okorie, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT.

The inaugural lecture, themed “Engineering Solutions for a Healthier Tomorrow,” will take place on October 16th, 2024, at the Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium, ESUT. According to the young Professor, the theme of the lecture focuses on making lives easier for human beings. She stated that engineering can provide solutions to ensure every human being has access to basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, and security.

Speaking in an interview with ESUT Monitor from Frankfurt, Germany where she is currently attending a workshop, the Director of Research and Innovations and Head, Department of Biomedical Sciences, said her inaugural lecture will engineer a revolution for healthier living in the society.

The inaugural lecture aims to celebrate and showcase Professor Nwobodo-Nzeribe’s scholarship, communicate their knowledge to a wider audience, inspire others, and establish their position as a thought leader within the university and society.

Since assuming office in April 2022, ESUT VC, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has made inaugural lecture a key factor of his administration. Already, a total of 29 inaugural Lectures have been delivered under his steward with the VC targeting 70th Inaugural lecture before he vacates office in 2027.
