The Management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has warned that the scheduled 2024/2025 second semester examination slated to start on Monday, July 7, will not be shifted.

The University Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor in an interview, said there is no plan to shift the examination date

According to the scribe, he noted that the examination date was fixed when the session’s academic calendar was reviewed earlier in the year and warned students and staff to get ready for the session-ending examination adding that the management will strictly adhere to the calendar as stipulated.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the 2024/2025 second semester examinations will start on Monday, July 7 and end on Friday, July 25, 2025. There is no plan anywhere to shift the examination date and the management is advising students and staff to get ready for the examinations,” he said.

The Registrar noted that a memo released on June 25 announcing the date of the examination was a reminder to both students and staff to be prepared.

He explained that the clarification became imperative following unfounded rumour that the date will be reviewed.

“There is no plan to review the dates. The dates have been there when the calendar was reviewed during last semester. We are making this clarification because there is unfounded rumour that the dates will be shifted. It will not be shifted,” he concluded.

The 2024/2025 second semester examinations will end on July 25 while the long vacation is expected to commence from August 15.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT on Monday April 28, 2025 began the 2024/2025 Second semester academic activities after Easter break.

ESUT Monitor went round some faculties to monitor activities and can report that while lecturers are on duty, students have not yet resumed school.

On Tuesday, for instance, when our reporters visited Mass Communication Department, they witnessed Final Year students having lecture as at 11:35am, while Years 3 and 1 also had classes on the same day. However, the number of students in the classes could be easily counted at a glance with majority of them yet to resume school.

The situation is similar in all the departments visited including English and Literary Studies, ELS, Public Administration, Education, among others.

Speaking in an interview with our reporters, the HOD of Banking and Finance Dr Gabriel Anidiobu said lecturers are very ready to begin academic work but lamented that the students are nowhere to be found.

“The lecturers are in their offices and they have visited the classrooms. We have few students who are available. But by second week, we are going to have fuller classes.

“The Lecturers are not waiting for anybody. We have taking off and the week is counting ready. Students should know that attendance counts from day one of resumption,” he told our reporters in his office on Wednesday.

Students interviewed said they resumed school early to help them get ready from the rigorous academic activities ahead and commended the lecturers for ensuring that the week was productive.

Students who have Not Resumed will have themselves to Blame – Registrar

Meanwhile, the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu has warned that students who have not resumed school are doing so at their own peril.

Mr Ugwu who stated this when our reporters visited him in his office on Wednesday, said that the University management will ensure strict adherence to the school calendar at all times.

He noted that the short Easter break was over adding that students who are on extended break should know that 75% attendance is sine qua none for examination.

“Academic activities resumed on Monday after almost two weeks Easter Break. If any student decides not to resumes, that is his/ her decision but we have taking off and the calendar is already counting. We have directed lecturers to resume classes immediately and I thank God that your reporters visited some of the departments and saw for yourself. Any students who is still at home is doing so at his peril because at the end of the day, 75% will count and before the students will be allowed to write exams.

“Additionally, let me also reiterate that it has become a norm here to follow the calendar religiously. The revised Calendar is out and the second semester may end in July. Invariably, there is no time, so students should make hair while the sun shines,” he advised.

… Records Highest Admission List Since Inception

Although the 44th matriculation ceremony of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology has come and gone, the echos still vibrate within as it has been revealed that no fewer than 14 000 candiates applied for admission into ESUT for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Among this number, 7174 students where granted admission while over 6 000 had their applications turned down.

The University Registrar, who disclosed this to this paper, attributed the upsurge in the number of candidates seeking for admission into ESUT to many factors.

“The numbers was very high and their was no way we were going to admit all of them. We had over 14 000 admission seekers who applied to student in ESUT. However, our carrying capacity could only contain 7174 students who we accpeted, the rest, over 6, 000 of them, were rejected.

“There are factors responsibility for this upsurge and they are not far fetched. Since this administration came on board in 2022, the mnumber of students admitted into the university have continued to increase. The major reason is the fact that ESUT is running a seamless, uninterupted calendar. If a student in law or Mass Communication gains admission today, he already knows that in the next five of four year, he will leave the school. That is guaranteed in ESUT.

“Secondly, Our school fees is the least among other State owned univerities at least in the East. I can also tell you that the commitment of our staff is also another factor. Our staff don’t joke with their work, they hold lectures as and when do and support the management to achieve its set objectives.

“Another huge factor is introduction of new programmes. The University has continued to introduce new programmes as well as creating new faculties. For instance, the former Faculty Of Applied Natural Science (FANS) has been seperated into two facukties, ESUT College of Medicine have had a new faculty while plan is uuderway to demerge Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. In the same vein, new programmes were also added such as Medical Radiograpy, Public Health, Biometric Engineering and Human Nutrition And Dietetics.

“The transformative leadership of the Vice Chancellor has also upscalled the ranking of the university out there. He has worked hard round the clock to rebrand the university and the reward is not just the increase in number of admission seekers but also in attracting sponsoships to the uniuversity,” he said.

Barring last minute change in plans, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) will embark on a two-month break after the 2023/2024 second semester examinations.

The break which will commence from August 12 will mark the end of 2023/2024 academic calendar. The new academic session, 2024/2025 is expected to start on October 7, 2024.

Speaking on the conclusion of the new academic session, ESUT’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie said the management would continue to ensure that the school calendar is religiously followed to the end.

He noted that adherence to school calendar is a key component of sustaining the mission of the university adding that under his administration, the university will continue to run seamless academic calendars.

Will the university be shutdown during the two months break?

The university’s scribe, Mr Ambrose Ugwu said the long vacation is for students and not staff.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, Chief Ugwu explained that the management has lined up series of activities to equip the staff and train them in order to become more productive and also acquire more skills not necessarily related to their field.

ESUT Students

“During the break period, we have lined up several activities. The break is just for the students; the staff will be here. We have series of activities planned. One of them is a training workshop for ESUT members who are retiring between January 2024 and March 2025.

“We are going to have a two or three-day retirement workshop for them. It will help them to know one or two things they can engage with after retirement.

“Additionally, we are going to have staff training that includes both lecturers and non-teaching staff. Immediately the break starts, we will release a schedule detailing how everything will proceed. This workshop and training will be certificated and compulsory for all staff to join. Many departments face challenges with filing, so we need to orient our staff, especially those in clerical roles.

“We are also going to have a retreat with management and the election of the new deans on August 15, 2024. There will be a retreat for all newly elected deans and heads of departments. By then, some directors will be appointed or reappointed, and their retreat will be combined with the elected deans of the faculties in preparation for the first semester and the beginning of a new academic year starting on October 7, 2024,” he said.

The 2023/2024 second semester examinations will start on Monday, July 22nd and end on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

The Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has stated that the management of the institution does not have any plans to increase students’ school fees in the 2023/2023 academic session.

Prof Okolie said this in view of rising economic challenges in the country in which the university is not insulated from, noted that despite shortfalls in the revenue base of the school, he would prefer to suffer for the next one year rather than increase the school fees.

“I went to His Excellency sometime ago and I told him, how do we continue to augment subvention with over 240 million, we want increment to the subvention of State government.

“He asked me this question, ‘Vice Chancellor, do you think this 124,900 is enough to take the student one whole year?’ I said well it’s not enough, we have to subsidize for education. We want more people to have access to education. If we increase it many people will dropout.

“When I told him that, he said yes he understands but the world is changing, that the federal government said it is going to give you loan and that if it gives you loan, you should pay for your education. I said but the loan has not come and federal government said it’s from next year. He said ‘okay, if you will not increase, I am tying increment in subvention to increment in school fees.’

“I said I prefer to suffer for the next one year rather than increase the school fees. I have not considered at all increment in school fees for this academic session,” he concluded.

ESUT VC, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie

The Vice Chancellor further warned that students who didn’t pay their school fees within the stipulated timeline will not be allowed to write examinations, going forward.

“But another good news to the students is that no student will write exams without paying school fees. On the day of exam, if you paid that day, you will wait for the next academic session.

“We must work with timeline because we are now working with calendar in ESUT. Payment of school fees is equally tied to the timeline. No student will write exams henceforth if you didn’t pay your school fees. If you bring anybody to come and do riot, I will allow them to destroy things, you will pay reparation and you must pay it before coming back.”

He advised the students to always face their studies and avoid unnecessary distractions
