The Benue State Government has declared a one-week Easter holiday for public and civil servants, directing workers to proceed on break from Tuesday, March 31, 2026, and resume on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary (General Services), Godwin Tyolumun Tighil, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber.

According to the statement titled “Declaration of Public Holiday to Mark Easter Celebration,” the decision was approved by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Workers were instructed to close early by 1 p.m. on Tuesday to commence the Easter break.

However, the government clarified that personnel in essential services would remain on duty to ensure continuity in critical sectors affecting public welfare.

The statement read, “Public servants are to proceed on Easter holiday beginning Tuesday, March 31, 2026, and resume work on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.”

It added that essential workers “are expected to remain at their duty posts to handle urgent matters.”

Governor Alia also extended Easter greetings to residents, urging them to use the period to pray for peace in Benue and across Nigeria.

This marks the first time the current administration has approved a week-long Easter break, although a two-week Christmas holiday had been granted in previous years. Easter, a major Christian festival, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is observed annually between March and April.
