Today the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose George Ugwu, popularly known as IGR (Internally Generated Registrar) marks his 63rd Birthday as well as three years anniversary in office as the Chief Scribe of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT

Born over six decades ago, Ambrose Ugwu  on February 10 officially replaced Barr. Tobias M. Ikpenwa as the ESUT Registrar following his appointment by the Governing Council. on February 4th, 2022

The Birthday Boy granted exclusive interview to ESUT Monitor in his office on Wednesday where he shared his perspective on his 63 years, His journey becoming the first “IGR” in ESUT and more.

Happy Birthday Sir. 63 is not a mean number,  How Do You Feel?

Well, I feel happy that God is with me and has continued to be with me for the past 365 days. Tomorrow, (Today) I’ll be 63 years climbing. It is a thing, and I give honour and adoration to God. It has not been easy, but I thank God for everything. I invite you all to be here around 3:00pm because the kind of enthusiasm, the kind of response, and the felicitation that people have been pouring in since they learned that the registrar will be adding one year tomorrow is encouraging. Thanks too; maybe we’ll spoon-feed some people. It’s a sign of sacrifice giving God the glory – some people will come here and pray. If we notice that this place cannot contain people, we can go to the Senate chambers near the auditorium, Julius Onah Auditorium. Life is all about enjoyment because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. (Laughs)

Will You Consider Your Position as Registrar the Height of Your Career?

Well, yes. If you join the university as an administrative assistant, the zenith of your profession is to be at the helm of affairs of that cadre. You know I started from being an Assistant to an Admin Officer to Assistant Registrar, to Senior Assistant Registrar, to Principal Assistant Registrar, to Deputy Registrar, and to the big R. So it is the zenith of my profession and give God all the tribute

How Would You Chronicle Your 63 Years?

As I said, I give God the glory; it has been very tortuous but enjoyable, like every other human being on earth. You meet ups and downs; you’ll see the pros and cons, but if you have God, you’ll continue moving. Don’t allow anything to distract you or be an impediment. Success does not determine from where you come. You can come from the ghetto and be the man or the woman that everyone looks upon. So don’t allow your family background to be an obstacle to your growth in any place you find yourself. I think 63 years is not an easy feat. And why I give glory to God is that I’m aware that many of those we started this journey of life with, where are they? That some of us are living is a privilege, not a right. And that’s why, wherever we find ourselves, we do our best to give joy to as many as possible who can receive that joy.

Parents, guardians and indeed, the students of Enugu State University of Science and technology (ESUT) would heave a sigh of relief as the management of the university has disclosed that school fees will not be increased in the 2024/2025 academic session.

The University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor in an interview said there is no plan to increase school fees “for now”

“No school fees increment for now; we are aware that things are hard for both parents, students, and lecturers,” he said.

When asked to explain what he meant by “for now”, Mr Ugwu added “When I say “for now,” I mean for now. Of course, you cannot increase the school fees at the middle of the session, at least for 2024/2025 academic year, because the students that resume would start paying immediately. So you cannot tell them to pay for additional fees.

“Therefore, if by now there is nothing like an increment, just let it be known that for 2024/2025 academic calendar, nobody is talking about an increment,” he concluded.

This would no doubt, be a great news to the students and parents as the expectation has been high and rumour mills circulating that the management are exploring the option of upward review of the school fees in the new session.

Earlier in an interview shortly after the second semester examinations of the 2023/2024 academic session in August, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius+Michaels Okolie told ESUT monitor that considering the economic realities in the country, there is need for a review but added that the management is sensitive to the plights of the parents and guardians who would bear the brunt.

ESUT is among the state universities paying the least amount of school fees in Nigeria with the current schools fees at ₦124, 900.

Two years administration of the Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Nnabugwu Okolie has been described as “tremendous and rewarding”.

The university Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu who stayed this in a chat said the oast two years in ESUT under the VC have witness recorded achievements both at infrastructure and humanitarian levels.

“As someone who has been in the system for several years, I think this two years anniversary of our VC has been something that is very tremendous and rewarding; because of a lot of things that he has put in place. It is unusual to see staff going to rest for a week or two but he came around and saw that at times all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. For the past one week or thereabout every staff of the university has been in vacation except those in essential duties.

“The Pharmaceutical Faculty is the highest pharmacy building in Nigeria, the same thing with the Department of Nursing, very soon MedLab will equally come there because the modules will contain all these department.

“Do we talk about Regularisation and Confirmation of Appointments? Before the arrival of the VC, we have not been following the work list of Regularisation and Confirmation of Appointments.

“Another thing we have to thank him for, is the issue of staff registering with their professional bodies. So many people don’t know that they belong to professional bodies but now, everybody is now having a professional certificate.

“He is not somebody that is interested in where you are coming from his interest is can you deliver and he will give you time and opportunity to try your luck and equally assist you.

ESUT is very happy and bless even though he brought Disruptive Innovations. Why I said so is that you know formerly staff in ESUT have been retiring in the same month 30th of September, but when he came, he said no. ‘We are not born the same day and it is not done I’m a civil service; you will retire on your date of birth or assumption of duty. It has brought sanity within the system.

The VC And the Registrar Recently in a function

“He also handled the issue of Election unlike before one phone call will just disturb whatever will are doing but now phone calls are restricted and no manipulation from anywhere we had a seamless Students Union Election.
Moreover, unlike before, 10 o’clock you won’t see staff in the offices but now before 7: 30 am to 9 o’clock, all the offices are open and it’s not longer an issue of when it is 3 o’clock you see people standing at the NCC building looking for vehicles they now stay till 4 o’clock.

“Talk of the increase in quota in Medicine, we met it at 50 but now it has been increased to 240, the same with Nursing, we met it at 50 but now it has increased to 100; Medlab we met it at 30 but now it has increased to 180, what we are planning is to increase Nursing to 200 and law. In the aspect of collaboration, we have them.

“His two years in office has been a great moment for everyone and we pray God to continue to sustain him. I didn’t talk about regular payment of salary because within the management level, we don’t regard it as achievement because it is the cardinal principle of the VC that a labourer deserves his wages. As we say in Igbo, onye rụọ, orie. (He who works, eats)”

Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie was appointed ESUT Vice-Chancellor on April 4, 2022 by the Enugu State Government.

In its efforts in rebranding Nigeria’s Premier Science and Technology university to be among the best in Africa, the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has commenced the building of a 1000-capacity Computer-based Test Examination Hall at the university’s campus in Agbani, Nkanụ West LGA, Enugu State.

The University’s scribe, Chief Ambrose Ugwu who disclosed this in an exclusive chat with ESUT Monitor, said the building is part of management’s vision to make learning easy, comfortable and conducive for the students.

He reckoned that the 1000-capacity CBT building will have two halls of 500 seats each for examination purposes adding that the building will be assisted by TetFund.

“Very soon, we would be having 1,000 capacity hall for CBT Exams to be domiciled under Exams and Records Unit. The building is seriously going now with the assistance of TetFund.

“One funny thing about the VC is that anything he starts he monitors it. The management is not unaware of the challenges students face during examinations and is working round the clock to amileorate them, he said.

The Registrar also stressed the management’s efforts through the Vice-Chancellor to e sure that all abandoned projected in the university are completed before October.

“On the issue of abandoned projects in the university, the VC recently went to Abuja with the help of the management to discuss with TetFund. It has not been easy, but within the next six months, you won’t here about any abandoned project in ESUT again,” he concluded

The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has charged the newly elected National Executive Council, NEC of the University’s Alumni Association to continue to sustain the legacies, comradeship and collaborative norms existing between the association and the management in order to sustain the new narrative in the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge in his office on Friday when the new leaders of the Alumni Association paid a courtesy visit to the management of the institution.

Prof Okolie who congratulated the new leaders on their election victory urged them to remain focused and supportive of the management’s quest in changing the narratives at ESUT.

“Let me first and foremost congratulate all of you on your electoral victories which I know were never easy. Today you are here because you played the politics at the time and now it is time to work.

“The greatest challenge we have in organisation, association or any group is transition. I am happy we are able to come out of the elections peacefully and in love.

“Let me assure you that we shall work in synergy. We shall be interfacing with the alumni to ensure that we get to where we are going.

“We just started the journey, we shall achieve our targets with your support and we are going to give you maximum cooperation and you can’t afford not to deliver. It is important that we sustain our existing collaboration in rebuilding ESUT. This is our dream which is achievable,” the VC said.

He emphasized the need for unity in the association and the impact it would make in helping the management to reposition the university.

“Where I am coming from, the Alumni has five factions and their issues have remained unsolved. Factiionalisation breaks down any family or group.

“We are happy that ESUT Alumni is a role model to many universities in the country. This unity and peace is instrumental in achieving our set objectives and I must commend all of you in this regard.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie with the New ESUT Alumni National President, Chief CNN Nwagbara after the visit on Friday

Earlier in his speech, the Alumni National President, Barrister CNN Nwagbara, said the NEC visited the Vice-Chancellor on tripartite reasons – to pay a courtesy visit, officially introduce the new NEC to the management and also to pay condolence to the VC who lost his mother during the week

Also speaking, the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu, who doubles as the National Treasurer of the Alumni Association, expressed optimism that the partnership between the management and the association will be enhanced.

He lauded the VC for his laudable initiatives in the institution which have revolutionalized the University setting it at par with best universities in the world.

He stressed that the innovative and pragmatic leadership of the Vice-Chancellor has continued to give a rebirth and sound health to the University’s 67 programmes and emerging ones and assured of the Alumni’s readiness in that regard.

The ESUT Alumni NEC members were received by the Vice-Chancellor and some members of the management team including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chike Nwoha, the Bursar, Dr Augustine Ojeh as well as the Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu, who is also a member of the Alumni NEC.

The 2024 Matriculation ceremony of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, will be held at various faculties in the university.

Unlike the previous editions that were centrally organised, the management directed that each faculty will take care of their matriculation activities.

However, the management has offered explanations on why it decided to decentralise the ceremony this year.

Speaking in an interview with ESUT Monitor, ESUT Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu said the decision to decentralise the matriculation ceremony activities was to ensure inclusivity and promote proximity between the parents and their wards who are studying in the university.

Mr Ugwu noted that with the new arrangement, parents would be able to have access and also know where their children are studying as well as have a first-hand knowledge of the university environment.

He added that during the matriculation activities, the Deans of various faculties will represent the Vice-Chancellor while faculty Officers would act as the registrar.

“As you are aware, the ESUT matriculation will hold on the 23rd of February 2024. Formerly we have been doing it centrally but this time around we have decided that we are going to decentralize the matriculation. The Deans of the faculties will now be the Vice-Chancellor that day and the Faculty officers will now be the registrar.

“The essence is that we want these parents to be acquainted with the faculties where their wards are going to study for four to five years. It will now be the responsibility of these faculty officers to take the parents round the environment so that if there’s any assistance they can now harvest from the parents,” he said.

The university scribe revealed that the management is making contingency plans to establish the Parents Teachers Association adding that with the decentralization, it will now help the parents to know where their children are domiciled.

Over five thousand students (5000) are set to wear the ESUT matriculation gowns for the 2023/2024 academic year.
