Enugu – Staff of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, will receive their December salary before Christmas day, www.esutmonitor.com  can authoritatively report.

Since assuming office as the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has made it a duty that the staff in the institution celebrated Christmas and new year festivities with their December salary.

TheVC therefore disclosed that ESUT staff will receieve their December salary on  December 23, 2025.

Professor Okolie disclosed this on Friday while hosting the Inaugural Lecturers during this year’s “Distinguished Inaugural Lecturers Party” at the ESUT Business School, Enugu.

The VC while appreciating the commitment and support of the professors and all staff of the university during the outgoing year, also announced that the management has given approval for all outstanding promotional arrears to be paid in January 2026.

“In keeping with the tradition of the administration since we came on board, the management approved this morning (Friday) the payment of staff December salaries on 23rd of December. We shall pay it.

“On the strength of that, Management will be doing one thing in January which will be payment of all the money for 2021 promotion arrears. We are going to pay it in January, all the remaining ones, we shall pay them off! We have been reducing the payment; we were paying 5 to 6 million every month till now. We had already directed the Bursary to work out the value for the remaining staff so that either we pay it before the salary or as we are paying January salary.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank you, Distinguished Professors, and the entire staff of ESUT, for their support in the outgoing year. The little we achieved wouldn’t have been possible without your support,” he said.

The VC also thanked the University Alumni Association for their support particularly for donating the sum of ₦10 million to the management during the 2025 Convocation Ceremony held on November 22.

Meanwhile the Enugu State University of Science and Technology on Friday, December 19, 2025 embarked on a two-week Christmas Break. Academic activities will resume on Monday, January 5, 2026

ESUT Monitor Newspaper can exclusively report that the Management of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT has fixed date for the commencement of the First Semester examination for the 2023/2024 academic calendar.

This development comes as the students, staff as well as management of the institution vacate the University for the yuletide celebrations.

However, the students will need to celebrate with caution considering that they will begin their first semester examination not too long after they return from the short break.

The First Semester Examination will start on February 25, 2024.

It was gathered that all exams will be written concurrently including the first year students.

Unlike the initial tradition where first year students usually begin their examinations two or three weeks after others, the University management has decided that going forward, all examinations must be written at the same time.

With Christmas day celebration less than four days, there are indications that the staff of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, may not be paid their salary early enough as being speculated.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chike Nwoha disclosed that the University Management may not pay staff salaries for December 2023 as at when expected

He made this disclosure while speaking with ESUT Monitor on Tuesday in his office. The former Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, explained that the idea is not novel in the university system stressing that the 2022 December salary was paid after the yuletide celebrations

Professor Nwoha said the idea of delaying December salaries was to help the staff to make savings within the period considering that the season comes with lavish expenses which makes things complicated after the celebrations.

“Last year, we didn’t pay them their salary during Christmas, but it was paid immediately after Christmas. The reason is if you give out such money, they will spend it during the celebrations. We want to help them to pay the school fees of their wards, pay their rents, because when they spend this money unnecessarily, at the beginning of the year, you see them applying for salary advance, and the money is not there to give for salary advance,” he said.

He added that the management since inception in April last year, has been prompt in paying all the unions in the university their check-off dues.

“But the management is trying now, we make sure the unions get their check-off dues. We have been paying them since we came in, what is remaining now is the accrued debts of the former regime but since we came in, we have been settling them, making sure they get their money, so that if you apply for loan, you get them, the ASUU get their own, SANU and the rest.”

However, he maintained that the issue of salary payment for the month is subject to change from the offices of the Vice-Chancellor and the Bursar, stressing that the trajectory might change after consultations are made with the key stakeholders.

He admonished staff of the University to celebrate Christmas wisely, pointing out that Christmas is not all about spending, but a time to reflect on one’s activities for the year past.

ESUT will close after work today as staff and students proceed on a three-week break for the yuletide celebrations. The university will reopen on January 8, 2024

As the University closes for the celebration of Christmas and New Year festivities this week, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has sent out his season’s greetings to the staff, students and the University community.

In a message made available to ESUT Monitor, the Vice Chancellor wished the University community a Christmas filled with warmth and joy and a New Year brimming with new opportunities.

ESUT staff, both academic and non-academic, have been commended for imbibing the new rules and policies introduced by the management with regards to punctuality to work and exhibition of high sense of probity in their offices.
