The Management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) will next month release the cut-off marks for various courses in the university ahead of the 2026/2027 admissions.

ESUT Monitor gathered that courses such as Nursing, Medicine and Surgery, Law, and Computer Science, among others, have the highest number of subscribers for the new admission. For instance, while a total of 3,043 candidates applied to study Nursing, over 1,500 applicants declared interest in Medicine and Surgery, while Computer Science and Law also have over a thousand subscribers.

However, despite the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board announcing a general cut-off of 150 marks, ESUT’s admissible marks are higher owing to the large number of subscribers. He further explained why a candidate who got 300 may not be offered admission to study Medicine, but another with 260 was offered.

The University Registrar told ESUT Monitor that JAMB’s cut-off mark is the basis for every university, but added that each university will determine its admissible cut-off mark depending on the number of applicants and quotas available to them.

“ESUT joined other universities in attending the JAMB policy meeting held in May. At the meeting, the general cut-off mark approved was 150 for universities—private, public, and faith-based institutions, including federal and state universities. It is now left for individual universities to determine the cut-off marks for each department. However, it is very important to understand what is meant by a cut-off mark. It refers to the admissible mark a candidate must obtain in the UTME.

“For example, in Medicine, admissions are divided into categories: national, state, and local government merits. When we talk about a cut-off mark, it applies only to national merit. Suppose the highest score in Medicine is 326 and the university quota is 350. You count from the highest scorer downward until you reach the allotted number for national merit. That becomes the national merit cut-off.

ESUT Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu

“After that comes state merit. If the last person admitted through national merit scored 310, then candidates with scores of 309, 308, and below move into the state merit category. At this stage, only indigenes of the state can participate. For state merit, candidates are selected according to their scores, irrespective of local government. The required number is counted, and those candidates are admitted under state merit.

“After state merit comes local government merit. For example, in Enugu North, if the highest score is 290, candidates are selected based on the quota allocated to that local government. Due to the increase in quota, each local government may have about three slots. The top three scorers from that local government would then be admitted.

“In another local government, such as Oji River, Aninri, or Isi-Uzo, the highest scorer may have 270. In such cases, candidates from other local governments who scored higher may still not gain admission because their local government quota has already been filled. This process continues until the total quota of 350 is achieved.

“This year, there will be nothing like attrition. Attrition only comes into play when a university has completed its quota and requests an additional percentage. Since our quota has increased, there will be no attrition. We thank God that the quota for Medicine has increased from 240 last year to 350. However, the quota for Nursing remains unchanged,” he said.

He announced that given the high number of candidates who applied for various courses in the university, the cut-off marks were adjusted to reflect realities based on excellence and intelligence.

“It may interest you to know that the number of applicants for Nursing, Medicine, and Computer Science is very high. As of the admission committee meeting held on May 21, the total number of applicants for Nursing Science was 3,043, while the quota remains 120. Medicine had 1,553 applicants with a quota of 350, while Computer Science had 1,086 applicants with a quota of 150.

“Based on these figures, we determined the admissible marks as follows: Medicine – 240, Nursing – 240, and Law – 240. Computer Science – 200. Most science-related courses will have admissible marks ranging between 200 and 240. Optometry, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Radiography, Mass Communication, and Civil Engineering will all have admissible marks of 200.”

He further disclosed that the admission advertisement will be published in the first week of July.

“The official admission advertisement will be released in the first week of July, where all these details will be specified. For now, these are the provisional scores available. Because some candidates are still awaiting their results, having just completed their WAEC examinations or waiting for NECO results, we will create a platform for such candidates to upload their results as soon as they become available. This is to ensure that nobody is disadvantaged,” he concluded.
