The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO) have donated 20 computer sets to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT.

The Donation which took place on Thursday, was handed over to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie on behalf of the University Management

Making the donation on behalf of NNPC/SNEPCO, Mrs Catherine Osinachi Madukwe said that the 20 sets of HP Desktop Computers are donated to the University to promote academic excellence, innovation and preserve the future of the students.

While noting that ESUT was among several schools selected for the donation, she noted that NNPC/Shell and their partners are ready to provide more support to ESUT but emphasized that the existing ones must be maintained.

“We got your requests on donations for the things that you need and the Company and its partners in their magnanimity have decided to donate some sets of computers to you, 20 sets from the NNPC, Shell and its partners.

“We are reaching out to schools and it’s a pleasure to meet you today to make this donation. I am very sure that by next year, they will still do more support because they like young people, innovation, effective leadership and they like reaching out. They also want to see that when they come here in five years, the computers should be working. They emphasis on maintenance culture. When they come and see that you have maintained it well, they will give more,” Madukwe stated

On his part, the Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to NNPC/Shell and their partners for the gesture and explained that the 20 computer sets will go a long way in helping the university to expand its ICT Unit.

He explained that the University and NNPC and other donors already have existing relationship which led to the award of Honouray Degree to the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, Dr Osagie Okunbor during the University’s 19th Convocation Ceremony in 2023

Mrs Madukwe and Mr Ugwu are holding copies of ESUT Monitor Newspaper, the University’s flagship newspaper published by the Department of Mass Communication

“Let me thank you so much for this donation, we are very happy that you are here and we are much happier that you have been working with NNPC, Shell and other donors on this linkage.

“Recall that it was the mark your former MD was making that made the Management and Council to nominate him as one of our awardees in 2023 during our convocation. He came here for the Honourary Award because we found him worthy based on what he has been doing within the system. We are happy that today you are remembering us.

“At the ICT, we are making efforts to expand the space. The building was donated by NNPC and it’s over 10 years now. Management has been making effort to expand the ICT baseline, a five hundred computer capacity building has been completed and will be handed over to the management on 30th March.

“The space we have there in the new building, both on ground and first floors will take 500 computers each. Few days ago, we conducted sites inspection and recommendations were made.

“We have developed softwares here that will help us in CBT examinations and we can only deploy and test them when we have deployed five hundred computers so that when that is done, other universities including your organisations, can rely here for what you need because we have the expertise.

“We thank you so much, we are not relenting. The 20 computers will go a long way, if we are looking for 500, we are now looking for 480. Here we aim to achieve the best and to do that, we must maintain existing infrastructure,” the VC said.

Lecturers in some departments have not submitted their first semester results for the 2022/2023 Academic session in ESUT, it has been revealed.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Chike Nwoha made the revelation in an interview with ESUT Monitor Newspaper in Enugu

Prof Nwoha who said that two unnamed departments have been found culpable, added that the management is working out stringent measures to compel lecturers to adhere to the rules guiding their conducts in the university.

The former Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences said that despite the decision to withhold the salaries of those found wanting, the management is considering coming up with more drastic measures including suspension of affected lecturers as last option.

Prof Nwoha who is the head of a committee saddled with the responsibility of taking records of numbers of results submitted by lecturers in each department and faculty, added that the current leadership of the university under the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie will leave not stones unturned in ensuring professionalism, probity and accountability is revived in the institution.

“I think my concern is on the issue of non-submission of results, that’s the committee I’m heading,” Prof Nwoha started.

“There are people (lecturers) who struggle for courses, but when it’s time to submit results, you will start looking for them. Can you imagine that somebody has not submitted first semester result in about two Departments? Even the ones we made some corrections and told them to go and reprint, you won’t see them again. They’ll just take it that since you’ve marked, that is all.

“Some we have given two weeks, in some cases three weeks or even one month to resubmit results. Council frowned at delay in submission of results.

“Report we have is that parents are complaining that they’re not seeing the results of their wards. We gave them deadline to submit these results. We even told them that if you don’t submit your results, you won’t get your salary. Because of that, the VC now told the committee to compile the list of lecturers and departments that have not submitted.

“We compiled the list and submitted to the VC and he had to withhold their salaries.

“We are considering other measures to curtail the issue and the next measure could be suspension of the affected lecturers”, the DVC said.

The Management of the institution is working round the clock to also ensure swift and smooth implementation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards, CCMAS with effect from the current session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has stated that the Faculty of Management Sciences Ultra-modern Information and Communication Technology, ICT Laboratory Centre will be completed in June, 2024.

The VC disclosed this on Thursday during the foundation laying ceremony of the ICT Complex at the ESUT campus in Agbani.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha, the VC commended the management of the faculty for their pragmatic efforts in ensuring that students in the faculty and at large, in the university as well as members of communities around the university, will need to enrich their intellects through the ICT Centre.

The DVC, Prof Chike Nwoha (right) and the Dean, FMS, Prof Chioma Oleka at the building site on Thursday

He added that the budding of the ICT center is crucial in the industrial revolution era to equip students with the necessary computer knowledge to prepare them adequately for the task after school.

“The ICT Laboratory center means a lot to ESUT and the surrounding communities. It shows the interest of the faculty in the affairs of the students, especially in their learning. It also helps to show to the world that the faculty has really arrived and that the university takes care of her students.

“This project, which we know involves computerization, is crucial in this era. If you are not computer literate, not just claiming it but doing the total practice of it, then you are in a better position to look for employment elsewhere once you graduate from ESUT. The project will help the students broaden their knowledge in their programmes and courses in the faculty.

“It will not take more than six months (to complete it). God willing, it won’t take more than six months. It is for every student, but the building will be owned by the Management Sciences. If you look at the site, you will see that it is open for every other students, faculties, or departments. In fact, even outsiders can come here and patronize the center, that’s all,” the VC said.

On her part, Dean of the Faculty, Professor Chioma Oleka expressed joy that in less than two months after the project was conceptualized, it’s taking off immediately.

The DVC, 5th from right with members of the FMS management team during the foundation laying ceremony

“This is the product of our conference (in October). During our conference, our topic was on digitalization of education through entrepreneurship. After the conference, I then realized that we have not gotten any ICT laboratory centre. During our award night, I threw it open to the people, I told them that the Faculty has not gotten its ICT laboratory center, that we are open for collaboration, sponsorship and partnership. We beckoned on them to come and help us. After one week, one of them that attended the conference called me and asked if the faculty has not gotten an ICT center. I said yes, then he took it up from there,” she said.

On his part, the site Engineer, Mr Valentine Ejike Eneh said the contractor handling the project has been fully mobilized to ensure that the ICT Centre is concluded on schedule.

A member of the Building Committee and the Head of Department, Computer Engineering, Doctor Harmony Nwobodo, said the Centre will help to prepare the students, especially those from the Faculty to be ready-made for the global universe that is being digitized.

The FMS ICT Lab Centre is expected to be completed in June next year

Sited at the opposite of ESUT Medical Centre and behind the University’s Library, The Faculty of Management Sciences ICT Laboratory Centre is sponsored by Chief Arthur Eze.

With Christmas day celebration less than four days, there are indications that the staff of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, may not be paid their salary early enough as being speculated.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chike Nwoha disclosed that the University Management may not pay staff salaries for December 2023 as at when expected

He made this disclosure while speaking with ESUT Monitor on Tuesday in his office. The former Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, explained that the idea is not novel in the university system stressing that the 2022 December salary was paid after the yuletide celebrations

Professor Nwoha said the idea of delaying December salaries was to help the staff to make savings within the period considering that the season comes with lavish expenses which makes things complicated after the celebrations.

“Last year, we didn’t pay them their salary during Christmas, but it was paid immediately after Christmas. The reason is if you give out such money, they will spend it during the celebrations. We want to help them to pay the school fees of their wards, pay their rents, because when they spend this money unnecessarily, at the beginning of the year, you see them applying for salary advance, and the money is not there to give for salary advance,” he said.

He added that the management since inception in April last year, has been prompt in paying all the unions in the university their check-off dues.

“But the management is trying now, we make sure the unions get their check-off dues. We have been paying them since we came in, what is remaining now is the accrued debts of the former regime but since we came in, we have been settling them, making sure they get their money, so that if you apply for loan, you get them, the ASUU get their own, SANU and the rest.”

However, he maintained that the issue of salary payment for the month is subject to change from the offices of the Vice-Chancellor and the Bursar, stressing that the trajectory might change after consultations are made with the key stakeholders.

He admonished staff of the University to celebrate Christmas wisely, pointing out that Christmas is not all about spending, but a time to reflect on one’s activities for the year past.

ESUT will close after work today as staff and students proceed on a three-week break for the yuletide celebrations. The university will reopen on January 8, 2024
