Ahead of the Thursday, August 29 election, no fewer than two erudite professors and a Ph.D holder have been cleared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ESUT Chapter electoral committee, to contest for the chairmanship position of the union in the university..

This is contained in a circular made available to ESUT Monitor.

This paper further understands that the election slated to commence by 9am will hold in two venues, Boardroom, ESUT College of Medicine, Enugu and the university’s main campus in Agbani at Senate Chambers.  

The two professors vying to replace the outgoing chairman, Prof Chinedu Aguba are: Professors Eneje Lawrence and Nnamani Emeka as well as Dr Mgbenkemdi Ejikeh. The trio are among the 12 candidates cleared by the electoral committee to vie for the nine available positions in the union.

It was gathered that apart from the chairmanship and Assistant Secretary positions, the remaining offices each has sole candidates.

In the position of Assistant Secretary, Dr Andrew Apeh of Mass Communication Department will square up against Dr Okonkwo Peter.

Other candidates cleared to contest as sole candidates are: Dr Chukwu Peter, Vice Chairman: Dr Ugwuanyi Dele Maxwell, Secretary: Dr Okechukwu Godwin, Treasuer: Dr Aniaku Vincent, Financial Secretary; Dr Nneji Samuel, Internal Auditor; Dr Maduagwu Nneka, Welfare Officer as well as Dr Asogwa Solomon, Investment Officer.

According to the guidelines released by the ASUU ESUT Electoral Committee headed by Prof Barrister Walter Obi Ezeodili, election will hold simultaneously in two centres in Enugu and Agbani. Accreditation and voting will commence from 9am and end by 12noon.

Voting by proxy will not be allowed while members are asked to wear their office identity.

Already, the ASUU Nsukka Zonal Executive Council members are in Enugu in preparatory for the election. The Members on Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to the ESUT management where the Vice-Chancellor assured them of the management’s support; before, during and after the election.

Comrade Agụ Paul on Wednesday emerged the new chairman of Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA) ESUT chapter

In a free and transparent elections held at the Senate Building, ESUT, and monitored by the National President of ANUPA, Comrade Agu polled a total of 63 votes to beat his rival, Comrade Nwachukwu Victor who got 34 votes.

The position of Vice-chairman went to Com. Okey-Amadife Nneka who was the sole candidate for the position.

In other positions, Com. Ogbodo Friday scored 71 votes to beat Com. Nwobodo Theophilus for the position of Secretary. Com. Nwobodo had a total of 26 votes. Com. Peace Onyia was the sole candidate for the post of Assistant Secretary and was so chosen.

Com. Meniru Chinasa won the position of Treasurer with a total of 79 votes leaving a mere 18 votes for her opponent, Com. Ude Michael.

The positions of Financial Secretary and Public Relations Officer were won by Comrades Ifeanyi Isiwu Adaora and Uzodi Christian, in that order. They were both sole candidates in their respective positions.

In his acceptance speech, the new ANUPA Chairman, ESUT Chapter, Com. Agụ Paul. Thanked the national body, the electoral committee and all ANUPA members in ESUT who turned out in numbers to be part of the new ANUPA in the university

He promised to operate an open-door, inclusive leadership to reinvigorate ESUT ANUPA and reposition it.

Speaking in an interview, chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade, Nnaemeka Nwodo expressed gratitude to ESUT Management, members of his committee as well as ANUPA members for their support in ensuring that the elections werr hitch-free. He thanked the candidates for their professional conduct during the campaigns

“I want to express my gratitude to God almighty for his love upon my committee members and the University Management for providing a conducive environment for the election. I appreciate our able and digital Registrar for his commitment in making sure that the election was a success.

“I also thank the interim Executive Members of ANUPA ESUT Branch led by our own understanding Leader, Elder Dennis Uzoigwe for giving us the necessary assistance my committee needed to conduct this election.

“To my formidable and dogged electoral committee members, I appreciate you all. The election was free, fair and credible and I sincerely thank the members of ANUPA ESUT Branch for their professional comportment and outstanding outing during the election.

“I congratulate all the contestants, their performance during the electioneering period were professional and superb. We are all winners”, Com. Nwobodo said.

The newly elected ANUPA Executive Council was inaugurated after the election by the National President of ANUPA, Comrade Dr Victor Bem.
