Abeokuta, Nigeria – The Enugu State Government is proposing to host the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) in September next year.

Chairman, National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko disclosed this on Sunday during a world press conference to update Nigerians and the global community on the ongoing 22nd edition of the festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Responding to a question asked by a journalist, Amaechi Agbo on the date of the next festival, the NSC Chairman noted that the Commission is streamlining the festival to hold in November/December every Sports Festival year.

Mr Dikko also expressed optimism on Enugu State’s readiness to host the “Nigerian Olympic Games” stressing that the Commission is in regular talk with the state about the hosting.

“We are working on streamlining the National Sports Festival to hold in November/December during the Festival year. We need to have a standard in this regard to help us maintain the festival. Apart from that, hosting it during November/December will help us to avoid bad weather due to rain.

“Enugu State is ready to host the next edition of the festival nest year. In fact, they are proposing to host in September and that tells you their preparedness. We are in regular touch with the state and we will continue to work collaboratively to ensure that the standard set in Ogun is improved upon,” he said.

On awarding the hosting rights to states ahead of time, the NSC chairman stated that states are already bidding to host the 2028 and 2030 editions of the Festival adding that the commission will announce the hosts for the next two editions after Enugu 2026, very soon.

Team Enugu at the ongoing Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival

The Federal Government and the Enugu State Government signed the hosting rights agreement in January and the state Governor, Barr Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah declared the state’s readiness to revamp sporting facilities in the state and host a world class festival.

“As you know, we like to be a role model as a state that gained pre-eminence over 115 years ago. We will not want to let our forebears down. We will live up to that standard.

“We have already set forth at dawn. Immediately that announcement was made, we mobilised our team. We are already working on revamping the Awgu Games Village and a whole lot. We have decided to deliver a brand new Games Village. We are also completely renovating the stadium to brand new.

“We are making sure that by the time you come here by the end of this year, you are going to be highly impressed. It is not revamping, rebranding or re-equipping, but we are also going to build additional facilities to the existing one. We are looking forward to having a word-class experience befitting the sports men and women, making our hosting a lifelong memory and experience,” he stated.

The State government has earmarked over 13 Billion for renovation of facilities including the Nnamdi Azitiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village ahead of the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival.

The President’s School Debate, Nigeria, PSDN, has recommended the Enugu State Debate Team to represent the country at the World Schools Debate Championship, WSDC, holding in Panama in July 2025.

Conveying the nomination to the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, the Chairman of the National Advisory Board, of Presidential Schools Debate, Nigeria, PSDN, Usman Muhammad, said the development was sequel to Team Enugu’s impressive outing at the last debate for secondary schools where they emerged the overall best.

In the letter dated November 5, 2024, Muhamad said, “This is to congratulate you on the spectacular performance of the Enugu State Debate Team at the recently concluded Inter-Secondary Schools 2024 Democracy Day National Debate Championship Finals in Abuja.

“It is as a result of your State Team’s first position at the National Finals that the state has been nominated to represent Nigeria at the upcoming World Schools Debate Championship, in Panama in July 2025.

“WSDC is the highest international world schools debate congregation for top debaters, globally.”

Meanwhile, the Enugu State contingent, which had emerged victorious in Abuja is made up of Emmanuella Chukwuma of Holy Rosary College, Enugu; Chiamaka Okwuibe of Queen’s School, Enugu; Goodness Chinedu Chiemerie of St. Patrick’s College, Emene, Enugu; and Chibuikem Ukadike of the College of the Immaculate Conception, CIC, Enugu.

The victorious students predicated their victory on Governor Mbah’s huge investment in education, noting that Enugu students were unable to participate in the National Debate Championship for over ten years and before the coming of the present administration due to lack of support.

Recall that while receiving Team Enugu at the Government House, Enugu, in September, Mbah awarded scholarship up to university level to the contingent, in addition to cash awards, saying the team’s victory in Abuja showed that his administration’s investment in education was paying off, which is 33 per cent of the state’s N521.5bn 2024 budget, the highest in the entire country.

“When we made the pronouncement that we were going to spend 33 per cent of our budget on education; that for every N100, we will spend N33 on education, a lot of people thought it was mere posturing or perhaps to earn public acclaim. But we knew that if we are to achieve a zero per cent rate poverty headcount index, we must do something that is radical in our education sector,” Mbah had said.

Enugu – The Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah has announced the approval of ₦80, 000 new minimum wage for the state workers

The Governor who disclosed this in his social media handles on Thursday, said that the payment of the new minimum wage will take effect from October, 2024.

Making the announcement, the governor said the government appreciates the hardwork and sacrifices the workers in the state have exhibited adding that their welfare will always be prioritized.

“I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024.

“We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises,” he said.

The Governor further said: “It bears restating that the minimum wage of N80,000, approved by our administration for both state and local government workers, reflects our commitment to leaving behind lasting legacies of improved living conditions.

“Our dedication to workers’ welfare is driven by a firm belief that a motivated workforce is essential for driving economic progress. There’s an undeniable link between an inspired workforce and the bold economic targets we have set for our beloved state.

“That is why we are committed to ensuring our workforce remains highly motivated, laying the groundwork for reducing poverty and achieving unprecedented economic growth in Enugu. For us, the best way to recognise that labour creates wealth is by ensuring that those who generate this wealth – the workforce – are well rewarded.

“We consistently showed this commitment through the timely payment of wage awards, a practice we committed to sustaining until a new wage structure was in place as we have done today.

“Indeed, our sights are firmly set on a prosperous Enugu, where growth and progress are not just goals but the very heartbeat of our journey. Let’s keep doing more.”

The Honourable member representing Nsukka East State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Engr. Dr Pius Onyekachi Ezugwu has stated that his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling Peoples Democratic Government in the state, is in the interest of his constituents.

Dr Ezugwu told newsmen in Enugu over the weekend that he decamped from the LP to PDP in order to bring his people into the developmental agenda of the state.

“When the government is working, there is no need for opposition. To ensure my constituency is part of the development in Enugu State, I decided to join forces with the government.

“This decision was made in the best interest of my constituency, to ensure we are included in the ongoing projects,” he told journalists.

In March 2024, six members of the Labour Party in the Enugu State House of Assembly decamped to PDP.

It could be recalled that the Labour Party, LP, which galvanised members and supporters in the building up to the 2023 general elections have become a shadow of itself in view of seemingly intractable leadership impairments that have engulfed the party both at state, regional and federal levels.
