The Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie on Monday declared open, the VC Games 2026.

Marking the opening ceremony of the Games at the ESUT Play-Ground, Ebeano City, the VC commended the Director of Sports and Students Union Government for putting up the competition which he said will foster unity and exercise among the students.

Represented by his Deputy, Professor Chike Nwoha, the VC promised that the Games will be an annual competition.

“This is the first time we are having the VC Games in ESUT and this is not just historic but commendable. It is commendable because the Director of Sports and the students union joined hands to organise the competition and when they brought the proposal to the management, we had no objection. In fact, the VC was happy and promised to give every support needed to ensure its success.

“The initial plan was to name it after the VC, that is, “Professor Okolie Games” but because we know that leadership is continuum, the VC opted that it should be called ‘VC Games’. He therefore gave the node for the Games to officially start.

“Let me also inform everyone here that the competition is not going to be a one-off event. It will be sustained going forward. We want to see our students actively engaged in sports, establish relationship and network. While we preach for fairness and injury-free competition, we also welcome partners to help promote the games,” the VC said.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Director of Sports, ESUT, Professor Rita Ani, thanked the management for their maximum support and expressed confident that the competition will achieve its expected results.

Prof Ani disclosed that the Games will serve as trials for the selection of athletes that will be part of the ESUT Contingent to the NUGA Games in Calabar later in the year.

“We are glad that the Games have been officially declared open by our dynamic and sports-loving Vice-Chancellor. We can’t thank him enough. This Games is very important to us not only that it will help our athletes to keep fit and winners rewarded but it will also serves as trials for us to select the best legs that will represent ESUT at the 28th NUGA Games due to hold in University of Calabar, Cross Rivers State later this year,” she said.

The Games which started on Friday, is expected to last for two weeks.

According to fixtures made available to ESUT Monitor Sports Desk, Faculty of Social Sciences will take on their Management Sciences counterpart in the football event on Thursday by 4pm.

The four staff of ESUT who recently participated in a one-month Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme organised by GIZ in Germany has presented their report to the management of the institution with a call on the integration of the German model of education into Nigerian system.

Presenting the report on Thursday, 9th October, 2025 during the two-day capacity building training workshop organised by the ESUT Management for frontline staff, the leader of the team and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha while thanking the management for the exposure, said the knowledge gained would enhance experiential learning and accord the staff, when trickled down, the opportunity to impact hands-on training on the students.

“The visit was hosted by the Hessian Institute of Continuing Vocational Education and Training (HLfT) and sponsored by GIZ. The purpose was to gain first-hand insights into the German Dual Training System and explore how its success could be adapted to strengthen technical and vocational education and training in Nigeria.

“The German dual training system is renowned for its ability to produce a highly skilled and work-ready workforce. We observed how the model seamlessly connects education with industry, supported by strong collaboration, regulations, and practical application. Thus, there is a symbiotic relationship between vocational schools, companies, and government agencies. Stakeholders buy-in: Government, industry/employer, chamber, parents and apprentices’ active participation.

“The German system is highly effective for cultivating a skilled workforce, and we believe that we can integrate this model into our own system,” he said.

On her part, the Director of Research and Innovations, Professor Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe, said the training afforded them the opportunity to experiment on a lot trainings including production of tools through fabrication. She requested that the management should make provision for the team to organise a training workshop for all the staff of the university to ensure swift and comprehensive integration and implementation of the model in ESUT.

It could be recalled that four staff of ESUT recently visited Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on Technical and Vocational Education and Training, (TVET) aimed at promoting innovation through practical, hands-on, and competent-based teaching.

The members of staff are: Dr Onah Thomas, former HOD of Mechatronics Department. Prof. Harmony Nwobodo-Nzeribe, HOD, Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Celestine Nwobodo fron Civil Engineering. As well as the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the DVC, Professor Chike Nwoha.

The group returned to Enugu on Friday, October 3rd.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof Chike Nwoha has urged students to promote a sustainable school environment. He made the call during the Faculty Management Sciences’ second International Conference held at the Dr Peter Mbah Auditorium in the University’s main campus, Agbani

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michael Okolie, the DVC, expressed grave concern over the unhygienic practices of students residing in and off-campus pointing out that refuse were often improperly dumped at the front gate of the school, and students in the lodge inside the school were spreading their clothes on ornamental flowers meant to beautify and provide a sustainable school environment.

The DVC warned that if such actions persist, further measures would be taken, including involving the Environmental Sanitation and the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) in Enugu State. He enumerated few measures students should follow to ensure a cleaner school environment such as – getting an ESWAMA bags/baskets to dump their refuse in.

The conference, themed “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa,” featured several notable speakers, including the Dean of Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof Uche Ugwuanyi, COOU VC, Prof Kate Azuka Omeugha, Stanley Aniagu, Right Hon. Uche Ugwu (Enugu House of Assembly Speaker), the Director-General of the Nigeria College of Accountancy, among others.

Their speeches centred on strategies for achieving sustainable development goals in Africa.
