The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Emeka Nzeh, has urged newly admitted students to take their studies seriously, stressing that their academic success begins from the first day.

He made this known during an interview with ESUT Monitor at the university’s 45th matriculation ceremony for 100-level students.

Prof Nze addressing the students

“Their success in graduation starts from today,” the Dean said, advising the students to abide by the rules and regulations of the university and remain focused on their academic goals.

Professor Nzeh expressed satisfaction with the ceremony, noting that the faculty management, staff and parents were pleased with the successful conduct of the event.

Meanwhile, some of the newly admitted students shared their feelings about officially becoming members of the institution.

Chioma, a 100-level student of Food Science and Technology, described her matriculation as a happy moment.

“I am happy,” she said.

She explained that her decision to study at ESUT was influenced by her family’s history with the institution.

“Right from secondary school, I’ve been wanting to go to ESUT. My mom and siblings went to ESUT. I just want to continue the dynasty,” she stated.

Despite acknowledging that university life is not easy, she encouraged prospective students not to be discouraged.

“There’s no school that’s not difficult. In life, you have to face challenges. There are ups and downs, so they should just come,” she added.

The 45th matriculation ceremony formally inducted the new students into the academic community, marking the beginning of their academic pursuit in the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) on Friday held its 45th Matriculation Ceremony for newly admitted students in the 2025/2026 academic year with a total of 8696 students being offered admission into the 14 faculties and 78 programmes in the university.

Speaking with journalists to mark the auspicious occasion, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, congratulated the new intakes and said the institution’s newly established Innovation Hub will equip students with practical skills to become employers of labour after graduation.

The VC addressing the students at the Dr Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium

He noted that the National Universities Commission (NUC) recently increased the university’s admission quota to 8,755.

The Vice Chancellor explained that the Innovation Hub, supported by substantial investment from the management, is designed to provide hands-on training and certification in at least three vocational skills for every student. According to him, experiential learning has become a core pillar of scholarship in ESUT, with a new curriculum mandating first-year students to commence their degree projects from 100 level.

Law students during the matriculation

He said the initiative aligns with the university’s mission to produce globally competitive graduates capable of utilizing technology for societal development.

Prof. Okolie also highlighted ESUT’s 45-year history, tracing its establishment in 1980 as Anambra State University of Technology by the then civilian governor of old Anambra State, Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The institution was renamed ESUT in 1991 following the creation of Enugu State.

Reiterating the university’s commitment to discipline, the Vice Chancellor warned students against acts such as cultism, examination malpractice, impersonation, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that violations could attract sanctions ranging from rustication to expulsion or prosecution.

Staff Procession during the matriculation

He announced that from the 2025/2026 academic session, all examination results would be uploaded online to enhance transparency and credibility, marking the end of manual result processing. He urged students to complete payment of approved fees and registration within stipulated deadlines to maintain their status as bona fide students.

On academic excellence, Prof. Okolie disclosed that students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above would qualify for scholarships, allowing them to study tuition-free as long as they maintain the required grade.

The Vice Chancellor further commended the Governor of Enugu State and Visitor to the university, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for approving the perimeter fencing of the institution to strengthen campus security. He added that security personnel, including university security, Man-O-War, anti-drug agencies, and the police, are on 24-hour surveillance to ensure a safe learning environment.

He noted improvements in infrastructure, including the provision of solar-powered boreholes, improved electricity supply, renovation of hostels and classrooms, and plans for additional hostel construction.

Prof. Okolie encouraged students to participate in extracurricular activities, revealing that ESUT recently won 13 medals (eight gold, two silver, and three bronze ) at the NUGA Games held at the University of Jos.

He also urged students from their second year to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ease financial burdens on parents and guardians.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the matriculating students and advised them to uphold discipline, focus on academic excellence, and strive to positively impact society upon graduation.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha, who conducted key personnel of the University on matriculation monitoring exercise across 14 faculties of the University, noted that the exercise was seamless.

Some of the matriculants, including the daughter of ESUT Registrar, Ebubechukwu Ugwu; and Favour Mmasichukwu, both of Law faculty, and Kenechukwu Goodluck of Computer Science, expressed happiness over their admission into ESUT and pledged to put in their best to graduate in flying colours.

… Records Highest Admission List Since Inception

Although the 44th matriculation ceremony of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology has come and gone, the echos still vibrate within as it has been revealed that no fewer than 14 000 candiates applied for admission into ESUT for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Among this number, 7174 students where granted admission while over 6 000 had their applications turned down.

The University Registrar, who disclosed this to this paper, attributed the upsurge in the number of candidates seeking for admission into ESUT to many factors.

“The numbers was very high and their was no way we were going to admit all of them. We had over 14 000 admission seekers who applied to student in ESUT. However, our carrying capacity could only contain 7174 students who we accpeted, the rest, over 6, 000 of them, were rejected.

“There are factors responsibility for this upsurge and they are not far fetched. Since this administration came on board in 2022, the mnumber of students admitted into the university have continued to increase. The major reason is the fact that ESUT is running a seamless, uninterupted calendar. If a student in law or Mass Communication gains admission today, he already knows that in the next five of four year, he will leave the school. That is guaranteed in ESUT.

“Secondly, Our school fees is the least among other State owned univerities at least in the East. I can also tell you that the commitment of our staff is also another factor. Our staff don’t joke with their work, they hold lectures as and when do and support the management to achieve its set objectives.

“Another huge factor is introduction of new programmes. The University has continued to introduce new programmes as well as creating new faculties. For instance, the former Faculty Of Applied Natural Science (FANS) has been seperated into two facukties, ESUT College of Medicine have had a new faculty while plan is uuderway to demerge Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. In the same vein, new programmes were also added such as Medical Radiograpy, Public Health, Biometric Engineering and Human Nutrition And Dietetics.

“The transformative leadership of the Vice Chancellor has also upscalled the ranking of the university out there. He has worked hard round the clock to rebrand the university and the reward is not just the increase in number of admission seekers but also in attracting sponsoships to the uniuversity,” he said.

Enugu Agbani – The 44th matriculation ceremony of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) took place on February 21, 2025. The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, Dr. John Chika Mba, welcomed freshers into the faculty.

Dr. Mba expressed satisfaction with the ceremony, praising its organization and timeliness. “We started on time and ended on time; it was very orderly. We thank the administration and the Vice-Chancellor of ESUT for their support in making it a success.”

Dr. Mba also endorsed the decentralized system of matriculation, citing its effectiveness in reducing crowds and maintaining orderliness.

He advised the newly matriculated students to focus on their academic pursuits and personal development. “Not everyone is given the opportunity to be in a university, so they should use it wisely,” he said. “Learning is not only about academics; they should also groom themselves morally and spiritually.”

Dr. Ugochukwu Jane Ijeoma from the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology shared her impressions of the event. “In fact, it was warmly organized, and the parents were very happy,” she said.

Dr. Ijeoma recommended the decentralized system, highlighting its benefits in promoting interaction between the faculty and parents, as well as enabling the faculty to connect with students on a personal level.

She advised the students, “Whatever you will become starts from today. Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, and there are expectations from your parents for bringing you here.”

Students from the faculty shared their experiences as freshers. Mmesoma Ugwota, Uba Bond, and Mmesoma Ogwuike expressed their thoughts on the matriculation ceremony.

“I feel indifferent about it because it’s just another step forward for me,” said Uba Bond.

Mmesoma Ugwota shared her excitement, saying, “Things have just been new to me, and I’m still adapting to everything. I feel happy because I’m now officially a student in ESUT, and it’s left for me to work hard and convocate.”

Mmesoma Ogwuike also shared her experience, providing additional insights into the ceremony.

The matriculation ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the students as they embarked on their academic pursuits.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) on Friday held its 44th matriculation ceremony, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, delivering a significant address to the newly admitted students.

The event, held at the university’s main campus, was a celebration of academic excellence, innovation, and the institution’s commitment to infrastructural development.

In his keynote speech, Professor Okolie highlighted the introduction of several newly established courses designed to meet the evolving demands of the global workforce. These programs include Biomedical Engineering, Public Health, Radiography, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, among others. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that these courses were carefully curated to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, positioning them as leaders in their respective fields.

“The introduction of these programs reflects our commitment to staying at the forefront of science and technology education. We are preparing our students to tackle contemporary challenges and contribute meaningfully to society,” Professor Okolie stated.

The Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to showcase the university’s remarkable progress in infrastructure development. He announced the near-completion and imminent commissioning of several abandoned projects, including the largest Pharmacy Building in West Africa, a state-of-the-art Entrepreneurship Building, a 500-capacity ICT Center, and the ESUT Printing Press. These projects, he noted, are part of the university’s broader vision to create a conducive learning environment and foster innovation.

“In a few months, these facilities will be fully operational, further enhancing our capacity to deliver world-class education and research. We are committed to providing our students with the tools they need to succeed,” he added.

While celebrating these achievements, Professor Okolie issued a stern warning to the newly admitted students against engaging in cultism, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct. He reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance policy, emphasizing that such actions would result in outright expulsion.

“Let me be clear: ESUT has no place for cultism, examination malpractice, or any form of indiscipline. The consequences are severe, and we will not hesitate to take decisive action. Your primary goal here is to learn, grow, and prepare for a successful future,” he cautioned.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities available at ESUT, including its robust academic programs, modern facilities, and vibrant campus life. He also encouraged them to uphold the values of integrity, hard work, and excellence throughout their academic journey.

Faculty Deans have lauded the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT on the introduction of a decentralised system during the 42nd edition of the University’s matriculation held in February this year.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie announced prior to the matriculation ceremony held on February 23 that the system would be decentralised to allow faculties coordinate their activities.

The decision received massive goodwill from both students, parents, lecturers and now deans who are voicing their support for the continuation of the exercise.

Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof Nicholas Attamah

Speaking in separate interviews, the Deans of Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities and Environmental Sciences, Professors Nicholas Attamah and Austine Emenike, respectively, were unanimous in praising the university management and calling for the system to be retained going forward.

The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof Nicholas Attamah, who described the Vice-Chancellor as “Talk-and-do” VC, said that students, staff and parents were marvelled at the new system and poured encomium on the VC and his management team for such policy change.

“The decentralised system was very effective and I pray the Vice Chancellor, (I call him talk and do Vice Chancellor, because he is so innovative in what he is doing in this University) retains it. The students and staff and even parents were marvelled. The system had so many advantages.

“It made students to come very close to their lecturers and understand what is meant by matriculation. They now feel the impacts of what matriculation is all about.

Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof Austine Emenike

“Secondly, it brought the parents very close to the guardians of their children and their wards. That day, when we finished the matriculation, I made sure that parents go to their respective children’s departments, to see where their children are schooling, where they are attending classes. Assess the nature of the offices of the lecturers that are teaching their children and the facilities that are there.

“The rich ones among the parents can say ‘no, let’s help this department to uplift the infrastructure that are there’. So, there are a lot of advantages.

“Parents who do not know the dean, now know who he/she is, his office, they now have access to the HoD’s office. They now have physical contacts and a link. If his child is not behaving well, he can always call the Head of Department, one of the lecturers, the Dean and introduce themselves to get information about their children.

Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof Nicholas Attamah in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor team in his office. The editorial team was led by Joseph Joy (News Editor) 2nd from right. Other members are Shedrack Eze, Ogechi Chika and Amarachi Daniel

“The matriculation also afforded the students to come very close to their lecturers because if it is the normal way, the students would normally be somewhere, they do not know who their lecturers are, who their deans are. They are just there. But for the last matriculation we saw that almost all the students were there and participated fully. The older students came out to tell them what they are experiencing and the mistakes they made during their year one so they will not repeat them.

“Such things would not happen when it is done by the school authority centrally. But now it afforded students the opportunity to get close to themselves, older students, their lecturers, dean and all the faculty members.

“So, this decentralization of matriculation is one of the innovations that the Vice-Chancellor brought that will remain with him forever because he has started it and it shouldn’t end with him.

“It is one of the best practices of the administration and we thank the VC for his innovative mind,” Prof Attamah concluded.

On her part, Faculty of Environmental Sciences Dean, Prof Austine Emenike expressed similar view

Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof Austine Emenike in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor team in her office. The editorial team was led by Joseph Joy (News Editor) far left of the dean. Other members are Blessing Nwokpkwu Ogechi Chika and Amarachi Daniel

“It was a new policy direction and we commend the management for their ingenuity. The decentralized system afforded the parents and students great opportunity to know and interact with their lecturers. The parents visited the departments and made their comments.

“It should be retained. We did our best and I believe that if the system is retained, there would be much improvements going forward,” Prof Emenike said.

The 2024 Matriculation ceremony of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, will be held at various faculties in the university.

Unlike the previous editions that were centrally organised, the management directed that each faculty will take care of their matriculation activities.

However, the management has offered explanations on why it decided to decentralise the ceremony this year.

Speaking in an interview with ESUT Monitor, ESUT Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu said the decision to decentralise the matriculation ceremony activities was to ensure inclusivity and promote proximity between the parents and their wards who are studying in the university.

Mr Ugwu noted that with the new arrangement, parents would be able to have access and also know where their children are studying as well as have a first-hand knowledge of the university environment.

He added that during the matriculation activities, the Deans of various faculties will represent the Vice-Chancellor while faculty Officers would act as the registrar.

“As you are aware, the ESUT matriculation will hold on the 23rd of February 2024. Formerly we have been doing it centrally but this time around we have decided that we are going to decentralize the matriculation. The Deans of the faculties will now be the Vice-Chancellor that day and the Faculty officers will now be the registrar.

“The essence is that we want these parents to be acquainted with the faculties where their wards are going to study for four to five years. It will now be the responsibility of these faculty officers to take the parents round the environment so that if there’s any assistance they can now harvest from the parents,” he said.

The university scribe revealed that the management is making contingency plans to establish the Parents Teachers Association adding that with the decentralization, it will now help the parents to know where their children are domiciled.

Over five thousand students (5000) are set to wear the ESUT matriculation gowns for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has once again assured the university community that the ESUT Radio will be back on air before the 2024 Matriculation date.

The Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office.

Mr Ugwu who was fielding question from the journalists on the update regarding the 2024 Matriculation Ceremony slated to hold on February 23, said the management is working round the clock to ensure that the radio is back on air before the matriculation date.

“We are seriously thinking of it. In short, I discussed it with the VC recently and he said he is going to invite the Deputy Director of Computer Science. The ESUT Radio will be on air before matriculation date. That is our target.

“We are still very hopeful that we will meet up with that target. We’ve been able to source some funds for that project. ESUT Radio is one of our terminal project that we know will be able to come to fruition,” The Registrar disclosed.

Established in 2012, ESUT Radio has been off air due to an inferno that engulfed the office recently.
