ESUT Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Students’ Union Government (SUG), Chikezie Emmanuel Ezesinachi, the current News Editor of ESUT MONITOR, has been inaugurated as the official Senate Majority Leader of the 16th Parliament.

Senator Ezesinachi’s emergence marks a significant milestone in the history of the ESUT SUG, as he becomes the first elected Majority Leader. With his new role, he is poised to play a crucial part in shaping the future of student governance in the institution.

In an exclusive interview, Sen. Ezesinachi shared his vision for his tenure as Majority Leader, emphasizing his commitment to amplifying the voices of students across all departments. “My vision is to give every department a proper and amplified voice, ensuring that every student is represented and their needs are met,” he stated.

As the Majority Leader, Sen. Ezesinachi aims to prioritize the interests of students, drawing inspiration from the theme “Ethical consideration and accountability.” He highlighted the importance of leadership skills, patience, and putting others’ interests first, citing valuable lessons learned from the SSG of the Senate Government and other dignitaries.

“My slogan is together we can achieve unachievable meaning that leadership is collective effort and with the support of my Constituency and student we will achieve unprecedented milestone” he said.

He stated, “I grabbed a lot of leadership skills from there, even when the commissioner of youths and sports, the house of representative presenting Igbo-Etiti, gave their own remarks, they encouraged me. I learnt a lot, being a leader you have to represent others, put others interest first before you, and patience is the best way to handle any position”.

With his inauguration, Sen. Ezesinachi is set to lead the Senate in driving student-centric initiatives and promoting accountability and transparency in student governance. His emergence is expected to bring a new era of effective leadership to the ESUT SUG.

Enugu – In another mileage of signposting the activities of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and stamping its feet as the Flagship Newspaper of the university community, the ESUT Monitor Newspaper has come out with a SPECIAL EDITION to mark Professor Uchenna Ekwochi’s One Year in office as the Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, ESUCOM.

The 16-page Sepcial Edition chronicles Prof Ekwochi’s rise to the Provostship of the College and his landmark transformative leadership one year after assuming office.

The Special Edition further marks the ESUT Monitor’s rising pedigree not just within the University community but in Enugu State.

Dr Ekwochi, a Professor of Paediatrics and a consultant, has demystified ESUCOM with his innovative ideas and welfare of staff and students.

The latest edition, making it three times the ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) hardcopy is being published in this semester – Convocation Edition in November 2024, Matriculation Edition in February 2025 – is dedicated to Prof Uchenna Ekwochi’s one Year pragmatic administration at the ESUCOM.

Professor Uchenna Ekwochi, Provost, ESUT College of Medicine

The Paper will start circulating today, and despite coming out with a price tag of ₦1000 per copy, Prof Ekwochi who singlehandedly sponsored the publication, said that staff, students and friends of the College and ESUT at large, will collect copies free.

This Is A Landmark Record, We are Making Progress – Dr Ezinwa, HOD Mass Comm

Responding to the mileage, the Head of Department, Mass Communication, Barr Dr Chidiebere Anthony Ezinwa described the production of the Special Edition as a landmark record particularly coming out less than three weeks after the production of the Matriculation Edition.

Dr Ezinwa noted that the production was made more tasking considering that it came out during examination and the EMN Reporters are not available.

While congratulating the Provost on his one year in office and the significant strides recorded, Dr Ezinwa praised the commitment of the students who despite their examinations schedule took part in the reportage as well as the EMN Staff Adviser for shouldering the daunting responsibility of packaging the Special Edition.

“Three Newspapers in a semester, sounds very unreal but that is the commitment and determination the department places on ESUT Monitor Newspaper. Recall that when the newspaper started over three decades ago, it’s published once in a session. But after the revival, the system has changed .

“Today we have a Special Edition commemorating the outstanding one year in office of Professor Uchenna Ekwochi as Provost, ESUT College of Medicine. He singlehandedly sponsored the production of the paper and we are grateful to him and the ESUCOM Management Board.

“Coming out at this period is very challenging because we just published the Matriculation Edition which came out on February 24. Today, March 12, another edition is out. Added to that is the fact that the students despite their ongoing examinations took part in the coverage and reportage of events but couldn’t participate in the editing and finishing end. This leaves the Staff Adviser, Mr Amaechi Agbo with a staggering task to shoulder and I am happy that, as always, they delivered.

The Provost is a Team Player

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate the Provost on his one year anniversary. The Provost is a keen supporter and reader of EMN and we can’t thank him enough. He has demonstrated the can-do spirit to reposition the College in line with the vision of our Vice Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie,” he said.

Prof Uchenna Ekwochi assumed office as the Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, ESUCOM, on March 12, 2024. He replaced Late Prof Innocent Okafor who died on December 9, 2023.

ESUT Monitor Newspaper is a publication of the Department of Mass Communication, ESUT. EMN is primarily to serve as the training medium for Mass Communication students and to promote and propagate activities of the University.

The Latest edition is making it the SIXTH since the EMN was relauchned in November 2023.

The Head, Department of Mass Communication, ESUT, Barr Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa has on behalf of the Editorial Board of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper, expressed gratitude to the readers of the University’s flagship newspaper, the management and entire university community for their sustained readership and support in the outgoing year.

The HOD who disclosed this in his Christmas and New Year message on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to the student-reporters and all who are working tirelessly particularly behind the scene to sustain the ESUT Monitor Newspaper.

Dr Ezinwa acknowledged that without the expanding readership of the newspaper and unquenchable support from the management, the ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) wouldn’t have attained its status as “the authoritative voice of the university community”

“On behalf of EMN, the HOD, Mass Communication Department extends his gratitude to our numerous readers, staff, students and entire management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology for their kind support to EMN which accounts for its gradual growth from strength to strength.

Members of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper Editorial Team

“We thank you immensely and will never relent in our efforts to serve you better as we look forward to further expansion in the coming year,” he said.

He further expressed his thankfulness to the board of the department, staff, colleagues and students for their steadfastness in ensuring that the quest to reposition the department is yielding desired results and also thanked the university management for the restoration of the ESUT Radio.

“We have been on a journey to reposition the department and make it the best not just in the faculty but in the university. This destination, though still a work in progress, have already achieved measurable targets which wouldn’t have been recorded without the maximum support of the Departmental Board, my colleagues/staff and the students who work collaboratively to ensure that we are pushing to attain our targets.

“Most importantly, I want to appreciate the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie and his team in ensuring the restoration of our radio station, ESUT Radio, 106.5FM.

“The restoration of the radio station, ESUT Monitor Newspaper and other activities geared at giving the students first-hand experience in journalism aligns with the vision of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah on the need for enthronement of Experiential Learning in our curriculum.

ESUT Radio was back on Air during the University’s 20th Convocation in November

“With your continued support, we hope to take over the airwave and regain our position as the best campus radio station East of the Niger and beyond.

“While we are grateful to all for the support in the outgoing year, it is our firm hope that the New Year would be better.”

He also acknowledged the support of the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof Uche Ugwuanyi who while as the Director of Entrepreneurship Development Centre, EDC, identified with ESUT Monitor and has consolidated it as the Dean of faculty.

“Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year,” Barr Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa said.

In a remarkable display of eloquence and legal acumen, Joel Obuneme Nnemechi, a fourth-year law student from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), has made the university proud by securing third place in the prestigious Amnesty International Inter-University Competition. The event, held annually, gathers the brightest minds from universities across the globe, challenging them to engage in rigorous competition on pressing legal and social issues.

A Journey of Preparation and Triumph

Joel’s journey to the finals was a testament to his dedication and hard work. The competition’s inaugural edition last year saw one of ESUT’s own, Oha Chinedu Stephen, reach the semi-finals. This year, Joel was selected to represent ESUT and was determined to surpass his predecessor’s achievement.

The competition began with a face-off against Adamawa State University, where Joel emerged victorious. His success continued in the semi-finals against the University of Nigeria, debating the topic of Mandatory Disclosure of Information. This victory secured his place in the finals held at Baze University, Abuja.

    The Intensity of the Finals

Unlike the preliminary and semi-final rounds where topics and positions were known in advance, the finals had an unexpected twist. Participants were given four impromptu topics, requiring quick thinking and adaptability. Joel described this experience as “crazy and wide,” yet ultimately rewarding.

In the end, Bowen University claimed first place, with University of Ibadan taking second, and ESUT securing third. Joel was awarded an Amazon Fire Tablet, a plaque for ESUT, and a monetary stipend. Accompanied by the staff adviser of the law clinic and the director of postgraduate studies, Dr. Chijioke Agbo, Joel’s efforts brought pride and recognition to his university.

    Support and Preparation

Joel attributed his success to the unwavering support from the coordinator of the law clinic, Philomina Chidiebere Nnamani, and Ogba Chinedu Stephen, along with numerous other faculty members and students. Their collective effort ensured that ESUT had the highest number of sign-ups among participating schools, demonstrating the unity and determination within the university.

A Victory of Dreams and Dedication

For Joel, this victory was the culmination of years of preparation and passion for debate. He reflected on his early involvement in debates and how each experience served as a stepping stone to this significant achievement. Joel had previously participated in and won the SUG Inter-faculty Debate Competition, which he considered a crucial preparation for the international stage.

Words of Wisdom for Fellow Students

Joel’s advice to his peers is simple yet profound: “Keep doing your best, even if others say you are overdoing it. Every effort you put in today is preparation for a bigger future. And never underestimate the power of prayer.”

Joel’s success story is not just a personal victory but an inspiration to all students at ESUT and beyond. His journey exemplifies the rewards of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of seizing opportunities as they come.

With an instinct on content building/ enrichment and proactiveness the desire for hosting the 1ST International conference of Accountancy Department was born.

Like a seed planted on rich soil the Department’s desire to present an academic forum that will not just grow scholarship but expand the scope of collaborations between the gown and town was nurtured.

In their initial letter requesting for approval for the Conference having risen from the 1st Departmental Board of the year held in January 2024 where the board deligently x-rayed the imperatives of hosting a conference of this nature, the board rose in high hopes and unquencheable resolve to walk the talk towards actualization.

The Head of Accountancy Department, ESUT,
Professor Uche Lucy Onyekwelu provides insights on why the Department is hosting a maiden International Conference. Below are the excepts:

    STEPS TO CONCRETISE THE CONFERENCE:

At the meeting held in January the Board rose with a resolution and mandated the Board Secretary to quickly make a letter proposing as agreed to the Management of ESUT through the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Chioma Oleka.

The letter was quickly construed and forwarded to the appropriate authorities. To our utter amazement the authorities did not just welcome the idea but prayed for its massive success.

Thinking through the system the Academic Board of the Department was dissolved into committees with each of the committees led by Scholars with distinct flare for the each committees accorded them. There ship anchored and navigated through.

Prof Lucy Uche Onyekwelu, HOD, Accountancy Department

Committees thinkering and synergizing prompted up on unquenchable desire for accomplishments became rekindled that all that runs in the blood of the Academics, Non Teaching , Post Graduate and even the Undergraduate Students is the International Conference due in July 2nd & 3rd 2024.

KEY RESOURCE PERSONS TO LEAD THE DISCUSSIONS:

A close look at the Team to lead in the interactions in the Conference shows that the Department did not just source for who to talk but succeeded in getting the Square Pegs into the Square Holes.

You believe with me that when leaders and experts who thinkered out templates for policies and also saw through the implementations discuss issues your guess is as good as mine.

In the line up of these revered the Resource persons is The Diamond President of ICAN the respected Chief DSC Alaribe FCA shall deliver the first key- note address First Keynote Speech , followed by the Dr. Rabiu Olowo who is the Executive Secretary of Financial Reporting Council, the Apex body saddled with regulations of Financial Reporting in Nigeria. Our own dear Professor Uche Austin Nweze, PhD FCA FCTI JP Immediate Past Rector of IMT a widely travelled and content building academic will do us the 3rd keynote speech..

The Department has also sourced exceptionally quintessential scholars to enrich the contents of the discussion through Lead Paper presentations. While Dr. Friday Akpan FCNA, FCTI will pilot the ship of the Lead Paper Presenters. To cap it up the Lead and Coordinating Director of Financial Reporting Council Group propelling Sustainability Dr. Iheanyi Anyahara, FCA, FCTI will deliver another lead paper on Sustainability Reporting.

To show the true content of a conference that is multifaceted , Professor Mannixs Paul from the USA will be doing us a paper as a Guest Speaker with speciality in AI, Sustainability and Cyber Security.

From the above it is not in doubt at all that the Department of Accountancy working with its Topnotçh Planning Committee is sure set out to shake up the landscape of Intellectual discussions and content building through the Maiden International Conference.

QUEST FOR GETTING OTHERS ON BOARD:

The Department in its nature knew that it needs to congregate other global scholars to enable it achieve the much desired aroma of “International”. In that light a platform was created to accommodate all and most of everyone who had got anything to do with its members over the years in research and scholarship. For example the platform named 1ST International Conference Forum which I call “Conference before Conference” has ran for a month or so at moment. The essence of that platform is to basically stimulate awareness for the Maiden International Conference, accept concerns as well as resolve problem any impending challenges of scholars who intend to participate in the conference.

In that platform are congregated a lot of top notch academia/ industry as well as policy Makers who are interested in Research. The Congregation cuts across diverse Academic and Industry in Nig and diaspora.

Another platform was also created for the Alumni of this Department as critical stakeholders in the Department..

True to its purpose this platform have seen concerns shared and real time on line resolutions done.

To the Glory of God the Platform has received more than One Hundred and Twenty(120) papers with a good number of co-authors attached to each of the papers.

WHY CONFERENCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING NOW:

This Theme of the Conference has been adjudged topical by many scholars. As we talk a good number of resource persons still request to be accommodated in the scheme of things. Their desire is not out of place but reminiscent anyone who has found a gold and wish to be among those to commence sharing. To that extent we applaud and say big welcome to them. Indeed the Conference Committee shall work out modalities to accommodate and offer every desirous Resource persons opportunity to ventilate and diffuse the contents they bear for our intellectual enrichment..

    Students of ESUT

To the specifics AI and Sustainability Reporting have got big roles to play in future or even future landscape defining Accounting Business Management, Social Sciences, Medicine , Agriculture , Law and every discipline.

The Department of Accountancy ESUT decided to embark on this very challenging venture not for anything but to help offer a timely , well articulated and enriching avenue to retool and upscale its members ( students and lecturers) as well as provide endless opportunities to knowledge cross- breeding with scholars from other institutions.

The Department is not oblivion of the fact that allowing the AI Concept to come on it without preparation could impact the endless potentialities of its human resources. So it decided to lead from the front in anchoring this programme. The Department is also quite hopeful that the contents scholars will bear after this will go a long way in assisting them expand their abilities of intellectual thinking and upscale its problems solving potentials..

The Department also hopes that the conference will navigate its members and other lecturers, Postgraduates and undergraduates adaptations through the synergies expected through conference.

    PREPARATIONS SO FAR:

The Department has accomplished a lot through its earlier constituted communities. the Committees are still working tirelessly to see that all knots and bolts are properly fixed. For example a team of the Planning Committee comprising the HOD, Professor Oliver Ike Inyiama, Chairman Planning Committee and the Co-Chairman Planning Assoc. Prof Ike Ezeugwu were at Urban Radio yesterday where they further elucidated on the Imperative of the forthcoming conference and why every scholar must be part of it.

We therefore pray all those that have submitted papers or indicated interest to make it a date with History.

The place of AI and Sustainability Reporting cannot be over emphasized.

The future belongs to those who prepare to meet opportunities.
