Baring last minute change in plans, the Enugu State House of Assembly is set to initiate proceedings to amend the law establishing the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu.

Lawmaker representing Orji River State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Honourable Osita Eze who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office recently, noted that the need to amend the law became necessary in view of prevailing health needs of the residents of the state.

Hon Eze who said he has concluded plans to introduce the bill for amendment of the law added that the intent of the new bill is to strengthen the capacity of the hospital in training and producing more nurses in the state,

Hon Osita Eze, Chairman, Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology

“I have plans to initial a bill for the amendment of the law establishing the Paklane Teaching Hospital and the one in Agwu Campus. Because of the need for nurses in our hospitals and need for better medical care to the hospitals, we need nurses. The number of nurses we have, most of them have gone abroad, and their services are highly sought out in other parts of the country.

“This is the story behind the establishment of other centres that would help produce more nurses that would take care of the various hospitals in Enugu state and even beyond. Their services are well sought, and we need to produce more. We can’t have more than enough because their services would be needed even outside the states – within the country and outside the country. And that would generate more money in the country and within the state,” Hon Eze said.

The ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane was established via an Act signed by the then Governor of Enugu State, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani in April 2006

I used to hear so many bad things about ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane Enugu, until late last year when I began to have an eye problem and my friend, Doctor Goodness Nwabueze, advised me to try the hospital. This took me a while before I decided to embark on this because the person who advised me is a well-known medical practitioner who is enjoying her private practice after doing her internship at the hospital.

On getting to Parklane, I began to experience so many good things starting from the attitude of staff to professionalism exhibited by the medical practitioners.

All these unexpected experiences prompted me to ask, what or who is the brain behind this?

I was told there is a new CMD whom Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah recruited from Ebonyi state called Prof Bertrand Ngwu.

The most astonishing part was that, the New CMD is an Umuenwene – Nike born Professor with 8 degrees but practicsng in Ebonyi State before being waybilled back to Enugu; as charity begins at home.

As an astute administrator, he started by launching the E-hospital, which made services like E-lab, E-pharmacy, E-clerking, and staff E-filing available, making things easier for patients like me.

The A & E ward got extended and expanded, leading to a significant increase in patient attendance that you hardly see parking space now at the hospital.

Prof Ngwu began to Construct the Triage 2-storey building at A & E to further improve emergency services.

We all know how difficult it was trying to make x-ray tests in Parklane but Prof Ngwu made that a thing of the past with the purchase of an AGFA printer for X-ray services, which also gave the radiological services a boost.

He provided a full auto analyzer machine for the Hematology Unit, while also giving the Chemical Pathology Lab a semi-auto analyzer, enhancing diagnostic accuracy.

Currently, Prof Ngwu installed CCTV cameras across sensitive areas in the hospital all to monitor staff attitudes towards work and to also curb staff misconduct before refurbishing the call duty room for medical laboratory scientists.

Prof Ngwu also ensured the security and functionality of the hospital by re-roofing buildings and institutionalizing a cashless policy. His initiatives extended to education with the establishment of College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences campuses across some areas in the state which my own Awgu Local Government Area is one of the major beneficiaries and also did Public Relations training for staff.

The hospital’s online presence was established, and departments like Ophthalmology and Community Medicine received accreditation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I can comfortably tell you that Prof Ngwu’s influence has even reached beyond Parklane Enugu because currently, there has been an approval to facilitate Nenwe Cottage Hospital, same with the construction of a seminar hall for Family Medicine.

Whoever knows this Prof Ngwu should tell him to do more.

If you are sick, visit Parklane and experience it yourself.
Sometimes, he would sleep at the hospital to ensure that emergency cases are resolved and lives are saved.

However, some staff are still misbehaving due to being used to laziness but with the way and manner they receive queries for being inept, within the next few months, Parklane will become a place of hope for ordinary citizens like us.

“Dear Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, I am very grateful to you for giving us Prof Bertrand Ngwu, I mere ọfụma na nkea “

“When next I will visit the hospital, I must visit his office and give him a wonderful handshake.”
