Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has upgraded its Postgraduate School to a full College of Postgraduate Studies, a strategic transition aimed at elevating the quality of advanced education and boosting the institution’s global academic standing.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, the Provost of the new College, Professor Charles Chime, disclosed that the University Senate approval of the upgrade formalizes a collegiate structure that the university had effectively operated for years under the former postgraduate school system.

“It means a transition to a higher pedestal in PG administration,” Prof. Chime stated. “It is tailored towards improving the academic quality of postgraduate education and also enhancing our visibility to the global community.”

Explaining the operational shift, the Provost noted that the former Postgraduate School already coordinated academic offerings across faculties rather than allowing departments to operate independently.
“If it were a school system, the various faculties will handle their programme themselves without recourse to coordination. But in the college system, everything is harmonized.”

Detailing the administrative restructuring, the Provost highlighted that while the Vice Chancellor remains at the apex of the college, the executive head of the unit now transitions from the title of Dean to Provost. To strengthen internal governance, he revealed that two Deputy Provosts will soon be appointed to oversee distinct academic portfolios: one for Sciences, Engineering, and Technology, and another for Social Sciences, Management, and Humanities. This new framework replaces the former single Associate Dean model.

According to figures disclosed by the Provost, the College currently caters to between 4,000 and 5,000 students, having admitted approximately 1,400 postgraduate candidates in the outgoing session alone.
Looking ahead, Prof. Chime revealed that the university is targeting a long term enrollment figure of 7,000 to 10,000 postgraduate students.

Attributing the recent surge in postgraduate admissions to institutional reforms, the Provost explained that the college has introduced strict measures to eliminate academic delays and prevent students from abandoning their programs midway.

“We have put measures in place to ensure that students don’t overstay, maintaining synergy between supervisors and students to ensure graduation is not delayed,” he said, praising university lecturers for complying with the new efficiency standards.
Reflecting on initial operational hurdles, Prof. Chidume acknowledged that the postgraduate program previously faced oversight and infrastructural deficits.

“The PG school then didn’t have good, proper oversight of what happens in the faculties,” he observed.

To resolve this, the Provost outlined key interventions, including deploying official college representatives to every thesis defense across all departments and faculties to ensure uniform quality control and accurate record keeping.

The Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has charged the newly inaugurated Postgraduate Students’ Union Government executives to be result-oriented and attract more development to the university.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Charles Chime, stated this during the swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at the Postgraduate Studies Hall, Ebeano City and urged them to be partners in transforming the school.

Prof. Okolie, appreciated the outgoing executives led by Comrade Chinonso Obodo for serving the student community with humility and advised the new leadership on to be collaborative in championing a new chapter for the school.

“You know what you suffered to be here. You knew what you underwent to be elected. It is not probably because you are the best, but because you are one of the best and you have defeated some people.

“What I want to say is that you have to carry everyone along. It is an exercise: you can win, you can lose. In this election, there is no victor, there is no vanquished, everybody who contested has the interest of the school at heart and we appreciate you all. I therefore urge you to build bridges, be accommodating. You will have to embrace everyone so that your government will be one to be reckoned with,” he said.

He tasked the new executives to attract developmental projects to the school. 

“The other day I was telling the Vice-Chancellor to get a hostel for postgraduate students. He told me I should seek private partnership to build the hostel as a guest house, that the land is available.

“We have capable postgraduate students who can do it for us. I want to let you know that Umahi is a student in PG and he is building a hall for Engineering.  I implore the new executive to consider this. We need an auditorium, we need a library for the PG School.

He added that university management has a policy in motion to upgrade the School of Postgraduate Studies to College of Postgraduate Studies

The newly elected President stated his vision for postgraduate students of ESUT, citing that he wants to build a community that can partake in global competitiveness, welfare, and academic excellence.

Within one year, we will: “champion students’ welfare and academic ease, especially on PG verification, defense, and result issues. Ensure inclusive governance where every faculty and department is carried along. Drive digitalization and proper information dissemination for PG students. Facilitate linkages, seminars, and research opportunities that will expose ESUT PG students to the global academic world. Restore the dignity and  voice of the Postgraduate Union Government.

“We want to leave a legacy that the next administration will build on. 

“To all Postgraduate Students of ESUT, I say thank you for your trust and mandate. This victory is not mine alone, it is for all students,” he said, while thanking the outgoing president and the Dean of Postgraduate Studies.

He assured postgraduate students of an open, transparent, and student-driven administration. “My doors are open. Let us join hands to build the PG community of our dreams,” he said.

Agbani – The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, on Friday, inaugurated 15 KVA solar power at the School of Postgraduate Studies, to improve staff and students work efficiency.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Okolie, who was accompanied by other principal officers of the University, including the Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu; ESUT Bursar, Dr. Austin Ojeh; ESUT Librarian, Dr. Ukamaka Eze; and the Director, ESUT Municipal Services, Dr. Thomas Onah, during the inauguration, thanked Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa led Governing Council of the University for approving the fund for the solar project.

He said that because of the huge electricity tariff from the national grid, the dream of the Management of the University is to install renewal energy in all the faculties of the University, adding that Faculty of Management Sciences would soon be off the national grid courtesy of a private donor.

The Vice Chancellor used the opportunity to call on private institutions, the alumni and other concerned publics of the University to extend helping hands to ESUT Management in her energy transition efforts.

He further added that efforts were in progress towards making ESUT Postgraduate School to become a force to reckon with in research, innovations and global best practices.

In his remarks, the ESUT Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu, urged the staff and students of the PG School to guard the solar facilities jealously in order to enjoy their value.

He stressed that the present University Management would not condone unnecessary delay of her postgraduate students, adding that students must graduate within the stipulated period of their programmes.

While lauding ESUT Management for the solar project, the Dean of the PG School, Professor Charles Chime, said that it would help immensely in actualizing their mission of digitalizing the School in line with global best practices.

He equally noted that the solar project would help the PG School to reduce the noise pollution and carbon emissions which are usually associated with generator usage.
