Determined to hit the ground running, following the successful conduct of their election on February 1, 2024; the newly constituted executive council of the Postgraduate Students Union Government, SUG ESUT, on Thursday paid a familiarisation visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie.

Led by the president, Comrade Johnpaul Ani, the new leaders were warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor in his office alongside his deputy Prof Chike Nwoha

In his speech, the President, Com. Ani informed the VC that their visit was first and foremost to officially introduce themselves to the school management as well as present their blueprint for the PG students.

Com Ani itemized the four pillars of their blueprint to include installation of solar energy to power the PG School, a solar-powered borehole to pump water to the school, interlocking of the PG environment as well as provision of utility bus for the union.

“We have some of the things the Union intend to achieve for the betterment of the students and the university environment. One is the need to install solar energy power. The Union spends so much on fuel for the generator.

“The second is to have a solar-powered borehole which will help both staff and the students. The next one is interlocking of the front of the PG School, beautify it with flowers to prevent flooding during rainy season because if you look at the PG school during rainy season, you see that it is not often a good site to behold, so we are working on the need to do interlock and channel the water through the drainage.

“Finally, there is need to have a utility bus for the Union. It will help us in carrying out our functions properly,” he said

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the leaders for successfully being elected to lead the students In a free, fair and transparent election.

He also lauded them for the visit and expressed joy over their plans for the PG School stressing that the plans are inline with the management’s quest to reposition ESUT and restore it’s lost glory.

“On behalf of the management, let me formally congratulate you for winning the election, it’s not easy to win election. What you have a embarked upon is not an easy thing, it is a task that is difficult to achieve and that’s why we must all work together to rebrand the university.

“I’m so happy about your programmes. Even if you don’t achieve them, it means you are thinking straight, because where to go is to put solar there. Equally you talked about solar-powered borehole, I talked about it on Wednesday, to install this solar powered borehole at the students hostel, so that light or not light, the water will be running and that one must be done within the next 3 weeks,’ the VC said.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of a portrait of the VC by the leaders to the 001 of the University.

As the March 1st deadline for all current students of the School of Postgraduate Studies, SPGS to pay their school fees draws closer, the President, ESUT PG SUG, Comrade Johnpaul Ani has said that the leaders of the students are working with the management to find a “common ground.”

The Dean, SPGS, Professor Charles Chime on February 13 had directed all old PG students to pay their school fees on or before March 1st or be considered no longer a PG student if ESUT.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, Comrade Ani said although students are aware of their financial obligations to the University as it’s not a charity organization, however noted that with the current economic situation in the country, his team will engage the management on a dialogue

“We had a general meeting among the whole PG students, and we raised some of these. And we assured them that we would get in touch with the management and let the management know that currently, there is an excruciating economic situation in Nigeria and the need for them to ease the bills of the students.

“The students should work so hard because the university, is not a charity organization. You need to pay to enable the university to pay her lecturers and other workers. So, we are working to find a common ground for both the students and the management,” he said.
