The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has granted operational licence to the ESUT Radio to begin operations.

Tje Head of Mass Communication Department, ESUT, Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor, said with the approval, ESUT Radio has been legally empowered to begin test transmission.

Dr Ezinwa who commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie and his management team for working round the clock to restore the radio station said that professionals have been brought in to manage the station adding that students of Mass Communication Department have been undergoing training in readiness for the takeoff.

He stressed that with the restoration of the ESUT Radio transmitting on 106.5FM, the department is ready to capture the media airways in the university. He noted that having ESUT Monitor Newspaper along with the ESUT Radio will give students off the department all round practical training in journalism this aligning with Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah’s policy of experiential learning.

“I am delighted to inform the university community that the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has granted Licence to ESUT Radio to begin operations. With the acquisition of the license, ESUT Radio now have the legal framework to operate.

“This is a milestone made possible by the Vice-Chancellor and his management team who worked round the clock to restore the radio station. We are grateful to them for this honour.

“Let me also inform you that with the fill license, we have been empowered to begin full test transmission. Previously we were running experimental transmission. Now we have been empowered to go full blast and that is why we are assembling the best hands in Radio broadcasting in Nigeria to help us takeoff. “

The HOD who disclosed this in his Christmas and New Year message on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to the student-reporters and all who are working tirelessly particularly behind the scene to sustain the ESUT Monitor Newspaper.

Dr Ezinwa acknowledged that without the expanding readership of the newspaper and unquenchable support from the management, the ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) wouldn’t have attained its status as “the authoritative voice of the university community”

“On behalf of EMN, the HOD, Mass Communication Department extends his gratitude to our numerous readers, staff, students and entire management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology for their kind support to EMN which accounts for its gradual growth from strength to strength.

“We thank you immensely and will never relent in our efforts to serve you better as we look forward to further expansion in the coming year,” he said.

He further expressed his thankfulness to the board of the department, staff, colleagues and students for their steadfastness in ensuring that the quest to reposition the department is yielding desired results and also thanked the university management for the restoration of the ESUT Radio.

“We have been on a journey to reposition the department and make it the best not just in the faculty but in the university. This destination, though still a work in progress, have already achieved measurable targets which wouldn’t have been recorded without the maximum support of the Departmental Board, my colleagues/staff and the students who work collaboratively to ensure that we are pushing to attain our targets.

“Most importantly, I want to appreciate the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie and his team in ensuring the restoration of our radio station, ESUT Radio, 106.5FM.

The radio station which was a darling companion to ESUT community and indeed the entire Enugu State has been off-air since November 2019 following a fire incident that engulfed the former office at Independence Layout, Enugu.

These years of off-air indeed affected the information reach of the university community.

However, following the painstaking efforts by the current university management under the headship of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, who did not only expend millions of naira in renovating, restructuring, reequipping and restoring the station with its original frequency but also ensured and assured that the station would be back on air today and would be managed by the Department of Mass Communication.

He has kept to his promise that the station would be back on air before 20^th Convocation Ceremony day.

Fascinatingly, members of the ESUT Monitor team were at the station on Monday to supervise and keep it clean.

The team comprising five students and the three technologists in the department were thrilled over the new look the station acquired and are looking forward to it taking off today.

Speaking after the exercise, the leader of the team, Mrs Agbo Chioma thanked the Vice-Chancellor and his team as well as the HOD of Mass Communication for their efforts in restoring the station.

“I am excited, just like everyone of us here is. This is what we have been longing for. For five year now, the station has been off-air and you know what that means in terms of information sharing in the university.

“I want to specially thank the VC and his team for this record. I will also commend my HOD, Dr Chidi Ezinwa for his wonderful efforts. He is trailblazer. We have missed ESUT radio, no doubt,” she said.

Enugu – Baring change in plans, the long awaited return to air transmission of the ESUT Radio, is here. This is because the 106.5 FM radio station which has been off air for some years will be back on air ahead of the 20^th Convocation Ceremony of ESUT next week Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie in a press conference on Thursday revealed his intention to formally reopen ESUT Radio on Tuesday 19th of November 2024, and still retain its initial frequency number.

At the press conference held at the Prof Julius Onah Auditorium as part of activities to mark the 20^th convocation and degree awarding ceremony, the VC stated that necessary actions have been taken to ensure the return to air of the radio station.

He noted that challenges relating to the management of the radio station has been sorted out adding that the station would be a training platform for Mass Communication students.

“On the issue of ESUT radio, the good news is that the station will be back on air next week. The facilities have been provided and those who are not yet there, the cheque would be signed shortly after this briefing so that the Engineer can fix them. We want the station on air before Convocation day.

“We have agreed on who is going to man it and it would be a training medium for Mass Communication students. They will be in charge of the programming and we want to see our convocation reports on the station,” the VC said.

It could be recalled that the ESUT 106.5 FM has been off air following fire incident that engulfed the station at its former office at Independence Layout in Enugu before the department was moved to its current location at Agbani main Campus of the university.

The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, (NBC) stated that obtaining approval remains the only hindrance for the ESUT Radio to return to transmission.

The South East Zonal Director of the Commission, Mrs Ijeoma Obodo, gave the condition on Wednesday when she and her team visited the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie in his office.

Mrs Obodo who was accompanied on the visit by the Principal Monitoring Officer, Enugu Zone, NBC, Cyril Udeorah, inspected ESUT Radio office at the old Afrhub building.

She expressed delight over the magnitude of work the University management has out in reestablishing the FM station. Although she pointed out fees things that should be fixed, Mr Obodo gave a condition for the retransmission of the radio station.

“I am no doubt, impressed with the level of work the University has put in here. NBC is fully committed to restoring the radio station back on air.

“Approval for your retransmission will be granted as soon as the request for such gets to our office. This is not just a community radio, it is also a trainee station meant to groom the students particularly in Mass Communication department and offer them first hand practical orientation in broadcasting,” she stated.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, reassured the Commission of his readiness to do all that would be required to get the station back on air.

He noted that as a former staff adviser of Lion FM, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he knows the importance of Campus Radio as a version of Community Radio and will stop at nothing to build an ESUT Radio that stand the taste of time.

He expressed confidence that high quality graduates that are marketable and highly sought-after would be produced with radio station in place.

“I am glad to have you in my office because we want you to help us give our students the best by making it possible for our radio station to be back on air.”

“As you can see, the equipment is almost ready and waiting for approval from your office to kickstart.”

“We have made provisions for 24/7 power supply with the acquisition of Lista, an ultra-modern fuel-powered generator, a 10kva inverter, as well as lights from the national grid.”

The Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has reiterated his commitment to academic excellence and capacity building through practical engagements

Prof. Okolie made this known on Wednesday when a delegation of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), led by its Zonal Director, Mrs. Ijeoma Obodo, paid him a courtesy visit in his office at ESUT Agbani campus, after inspecting the new ESUT Radio complex situated at the old Afrihub building in the university

The VC explained that his administration, has been on the move towards making the institution one of the world’s best, with the aim of providing students with the best education to compete globally.

He posited that the new ESUT Radio has been designed to effectively deliver the world’s best radio content, as it has been furnished and equipped with all the necessary materials.

According to him, “You are welcomed to ESUT, where academic excellence is revered.

“This is a university of science and technology that focuses so much on capacity building.

“I am glad to have you in my office because we want you to help us give our students the best by making it possible for our radio station to be back on air.

“As you can see, the equipment is almost ready and waiting for approval from your office to kickstart.

“We have made provisions for 24/7 power supply with the acquisition of Lista, an ultra-modern fuel-powered generator, a 10kva inverter, as well as lights from the national grid,” the VC said.

Prof. Okolie also commended NBC for their commitment to service, urging them to maintain the station’s frequency of 106.5 FM.

“I want to beg you to tell your national leadership not to relinquish our frequency to others.

“Though we have been off-air for a while, we know that NBC can help us by reactivating our frequency.

“We hope to get the approval as soon as possible.”

Earlier, the Zonal Director of the commission, Mrs. Ijeoma Obodo, had expressed her satisfaction with the level of work done so far by the university’s management in getting the radio station back on air.

She stated that NBC is committed to restoring the radio station back on air, assuring the school’s management that approval would be granted as soon as the request for such gets to their office.

The courtesy call also had in attendance the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu;
Head, Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa; the Deputy Director of ICT ESUT, Dr. Uche Okafor, the Principal Monitoring Officer of NBC, Enugu Zonal Office, Mr. Cyril Udora and Mr. Sebastine Okafor of the Mass Communication Department of the school, amongst others.

The South East Zonal Director, NBC Mrs Ijeoma Obodo, visited ESUT Radio for inspection. She explained that the purpose of the visit was to see things for herself as a prerequisite for the renewal of the station’s license having been off air for some years following a fire incident. She emphasized that she would not rely on hear say or what she was told to make recommendations to her Director General in Abuja.

She expressed happiness with the level of efforts put in place to restore the station. But noted that few things need to be put in place for the actual take off of the station. She further noted the importance of a functional Radio station to the teaching and learning of Mass communication, Engineering and ICT.

Perhaps, the expectation of ESUT community to listen, once again, to their darling and most authoritative radio station in South East was left hanging when the expected return on air of the ESUT Radio before February 23, was not forthcoming.  

ESUT management had assured that the radio station which has been off air for a period of time would be restored before 2024 Matriculation date.

Speaking at the Orientation Programme for fresh students on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie offered explanation on the delay.

“ESUT radio is supposed to be launched before matriculation; the target we gave the contractor and the vendor was to finish before matriculation. We have paid 70 percent fund of ESUT radio which will be installed at the last floor of the Afrihub building we recently acquired,” the VC said.

He appealed to the University community for additional time adding that the radio station will be back on air shortly after the matriculation.

“One thing we can assure you is that within the next one week, you people will have the opportunity to go there for interviews, anchoring in a programme, and also telling the world about ESUT.”

Determined to ensure that the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT Radio is back on air on or before February 23, 2024, works on the reestablishment of the radio station will commence today, Thursday, February 8, 2024, ESUT Monitor can exclusively report.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie gave assurance that works would commence on the radio station today with a two-week completion deadline, adding that the radio would be on air on Matriculation day.

“The management has already approved it that the radio station should be back on air. In fact, the fund will be released tomorrow (today) to the vendor so that the work will start tomorrow (today, February 8). By the grace of God, if it works out, it would be ready on our matriculation.

“So when they arrive, we will give you (ESUT Monitor) a definite answer whether it will be in one week or two weeks, but they are coming on Thursday. We are not building new structure. They already have a structure where it can start.” he concluded.

Transmitting on 106.5 Frequency Modulation, the ESUT Radio has been off air for some years now due to the inferno that engulfed the former office in Enugu metropolis.

Since November last year, ESUT management has made the re-installation of the radio station a top priority with March 2024 timeline for completion.

However, the management is working assiduously in ensuring that the project is not only executed but completed far ahead of time. The 2024 ESUT Matriculation Ceremony will on Friday, February 23, 2024.

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has once again assured the university community that the ESUT Radio will be back on air before the 2024 Matriculation date.

The Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office.

Mr Ugwu who was fielding question from the journalists on the update regarding the 2024 Matriculation Ceremony slated to hold on February 23, said the management is working round the clock to ensure that the radio is back on air before the matriculation date.

“We are seriously thinking of it. In short, I discussed it with the VC recently and he said he is going to invite the Deputy Director of Computer Science. The ESUT Radio will be on air before matriculation date. That is our target.

“We are still very hopeful that we will meet up with that target. We’ve been able to source some funds for that project. ESUT Radio is one of our terminal project that we know will be able to come to fruition,” The Registrar disclosed.

Established in 2012, ESUT Radio has been off air due to an inferno that engulfed the office recently.

Baring last minute change in plans, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT has concluded plans to restore the ESUT Radio on air latest by March next year, ESUT Monitor can report authoritatively.

Operating on 106.5 Frequency Modulation (FM), the ESUT Radio licensed in 2012 went off air following fire incident that affected the office building in Enugu, some years back.

The Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, in an interview, gave assurance that the Radio will be back on air before the end of March 2024

“The Vice-Chancellor last week, when we went to Port Harcourt, presented this issue to the ESUT alumni, that ESUT does not have ESUT Radio. He wants the alumni to assist because the University is already completing payment for the Afri-Hub. The ESUT Radio can be hoisted within that Afri-Hub complex.  The good news is that the alumni Port Harcourt branch made instant donations towards that project. What we are now waiting is for the budget estimate. The Vice-Chancellor commissioned a committee to go and work out the modality.

“Before February – March, you’ll be hearing ESUT Radio again. The money is already there because we told them that completion of the payment for the Afri-Hub and the ESUT radio will not guzzle more than twenty million naira. After the donation in which ten million naira was realised, they said that if there is any other thing that will prevent it, we should let them know. Not only that they donated, they have already started paying it into the University account.

“I’m sure that by next week, the Vice-Chancellor will call some of you to witness the discussion of the ESUT Radio. We don’t want to go and find out what happened in the past, but we are floating it, because we have been hearing Caritas University Radio, Coal City University Radio, and ESUT came on board before those areas, so it’s a done deal,” he said.

The news is coming less than a month after the Department of Mass Communication relaunched its newspaper, ESUT Monitor along with the website.
