The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU has lauded the pragmatic leadership of the ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Nnabugwu Okolie on his two years administration.

The Association gave the commendation through its president, Comrade Engr Okey Animba in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor.

Com. Animba while assessing the VC’s two years in office reckoned that his members have not been owed salary since he became the chief executive officer of the university adding that many of them have also been promoted

“In his two years as the Vice-Chancellor in ESUT, we have not been owed salary, salary is not an issue, my members have been promoted. There is synergy between labour and the management. Infrastructure-wise, the school is moving. Under two years, I will rate him high,” the chairman said

However, on the remaining years of his stewardship, the SSANU ESUT supremo made a passionate appeal to the VC to pay the accumulated arrears of benefits, entitlements of his members to the tune of over seventeen billion naira also calling on the Enugu State government to increase its monthly subventions to the university

“What I wish him to do is he should make sure he clears this over seventeen billion naira accumulated arrears owed my members, it’s very possible. We have a new Council and a wonderful government with a pragmatic governor, ESUT should be properly funded. In the next 3 years, there should be increase in subvention; N136 million is nothing to write home and about. Over seventeen million naira arrears should be cleared, my members should be promoted because labour in campus is supportive.”

The chairman offered suggestion on how the backlog could be paid

“We are not saying that they should bring the whole money at once, but at least they should start doing something. We should start somewhere, like the issue of promotion arrears, we can say pay unit by unit. I know that Bursary unit has been paid, some staff in Education have also been paid. So we can say faculty of this, pay them below 10 million, Works Department, pay below 7 million; Security can be paid 8 million, month by Month or in 2 months if we have the political will. That’s why I said they can do that, we are supportive.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has disclosed that his priority is to make the university a citadel of research and learning hub in Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor stated this on Wednesday while delivering a speech at the 2024 Orientation programme for the first year students in the University.

The Orientation which marked the commencement of activities for the 2024 Matriculation ceremony was held at the Professor Julius Onah Auditorium.

“We just finished paying for the acquisition of Afrihub, and the building now belongs to ESUT. It was sold by a private investor, for 18 months, we started paying to acquire the building, and by December 2023, we finished payment. Two weeks ago, we officially took ownership of the building, and by next week, the renovation of the building would start, we have approved the fund.

“After the renovation, what do we want to do with the building? We want to create an innovation hub where we are going to go into sophisticated teaching on AI. You know what is AI? So artificial intelligence and other internet things we shall start it there. The idea of starting it is that we want to do different from what other universities are doing.

“The idea of starting it is that we want to do things different from what other universities are doing, and by the time you got to third year, you must have been certified on a number of ICT programmes so that you can generate funds there and pay for your fees.

“I want to tell you that we have not been sleeping, we have been making some efforts and we are going to unfold our plans. We want to turn ESUT into a citadel of research and learning even in Africa,” he said.

The VC who welcomed the freshers to the university, charged them to remain dedicated to the reason for which they were offered admission in ESUT and admonished them to strive to make their parents proud.

Perhaps, the expectation of ESUT community to listen, once again, to their darling and most authoritative radio station in South East was left hanging when the expected return on air of the ESUT Radio before February 23, was not forthcoming.

ESUT management had assured that the radio station which has been off air for a period of time would be restored before 2024 Matriculation date.

Speaking at the Orientation Programme for fresh students on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie offered explanation on the delay.

“ESUT radio is supposed to be launched before matriculation; the target we gave the contractor and the vendor was to finish before matriculation. We have paid 70 percent fund of ESUT radio which will be installed at the last floor of the Afrihub building we recently acquired,” the VC said.

He appealed to the University community for additional time adding that the radio station will be back on air shortly after the matriculation.

“One thing we can assure you is that within the next one week, you people will have the opportunity to go there for interviews, anchoring in a programme, and also telling the world about ESUT.”

Transmitting on 106.5 FM, the ESUT Radio has been off air following inferno that engulfed the former office in Enugu town.
