As part of ongoing efforts to position Enugu State as a leading centre for technology-driven growth and innovation, Governor Peter Mbah has intensified his administration’s push for experiential, skills-based education that prioritises practical knowledge over conventional classroom learning.

In furtherance of this vision, a high-powered delegation from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has arrived in Doha, Qatar, for a strategic academic study tour focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), innovation, applied learning, and technology implementation frameworks.

The delegation, led by the Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, is engaging in a series of visits to leading academic institutions and innovation centres across Qatar to gain firsthand insight into globally recognised models of experiential learning and technological advancement.

Renowned for its world-class educational institutions and strong commitment to applied learning, Qatar offers a valuable platform for the delegation to study best practices that can be adapted to strengthen higher education and innovation in Enugu State.

A major objective of the visit is to advance plans for the establishment of a Centre for Artificial Intelligence Studies, Research and Innovation at ESUT. The proposed centre is envisioned as a catalyst for cutting-edge research, industry collaboration, innovation, and hands-on learning opportunities for students and faculty.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Okolie emphasised the importance of learning from successful global models.

“We must understudy proven systems and engage with leading experts to ensure that our academic programmes align with international standards in Robotics, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Software Engineering, and other emerging technologies,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that members of the delegation were carefully selected to support Enugu State’s broader education and innovation agenda. He also commended Governor Mbah for his commitment to transforming education through technology and positioning the state as a knowledge-driven economy.

Representatives of the host institutions reaffirmed their willingness to support the initiative, stressing that while technology offers immense opportunities, its impact depends largely on responsible application, governance, and ethical considerations.

During one of the sessions

As part of the programme, the delegation toured several innovation hubs and educational facilities where experts delivered presentations on global education trends, AI deployment strategies, and emerging technology ecosystems.

During one of the sessions, Dr. Dhamir Mannai, a Cloud and Cyber Security Systems specialist, highlighted the growing importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence into contemporary academic curricula. According to him, universities must continually adapt to technological advancements to remain relevant and competitive in a rapidly evolving global environment.

The team also visited prominent educational institutions, including Al Maha Academy for Boys, with further engagements scheduled at leading tertiary institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University Qatar.

Officials involved in the initiative said the proposed AI centre at ESUT is expected to emerge as a centre of excellence, offering industry-oriented training, research opportunities, innovation support, and professional development programmes for students, academics, and technology practitioners.

Deliberations in Doha also examined the opportunities and challenges presented by Artificial Intelligence. Stakeholders underscored the need for responsible adoption and robust regulatory frameworks to address concerns relating to ethics, misinformation, and AI-generated content.

They further pledged technical support, expert guidance, and collaborative partnerships aimed at ensuring the successful establishment and operation of the proposed centre.

The delegation comprises key academic and administrative officials of ESUT, including the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Chike Anibeze; Registrar, Ambrose Ugwu; Chairman of the MoU Committee, Professor Titus Enudu; Director of Physical Planning, Professor Frank Iloeje; Director of TETFund, Dr. Onyekachi Egwuagu; Dr. Jonathan Okolie from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor; and Qatar-based technology expert, Samson Eneje.

Beyond enhancing institutional understanding of AI and emerging technologies, the visit is expected to yield strategic recommendations that will strengthen the integration of Artificial Intelligence into teaching, research, innovation, and overall educational development in Enugu State.

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund,TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, on excellent service delivery in the University.

Echono said ESUT has now become first choice University in South East courtesy of ESUT Management’s enforcement of improved academic and infrastructure contents as well as prudent utilisation of resources in the University.

The Executive Secretary who was represented by the South East Zonal Director of TETFund, Dr Mrs. Catherine Onuoha, made the remarks during the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of 1,600 capacity students hostel at the Ebe Ano City, Enugu State on Wednesday, 25th March, 2026.

“The leadership of ESUT presently is different from others, I remember in the time past, no student is proud to announce his admission into ESUT because of the level of malfeasances in the University then, but today, the story is different . I want to say kudos to the Vice Chancellor and his team of Management for excellent leadership and administration in ESUT. The works you are doing are evident in all facets of the University.

During the foundation laying

” The construction of students hostel under public-private-partnership is under the 2025 TETFund Special Intervention Project. This project reflects TETFund’s core mandate and and underscores the enabling environment fostered by His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, for sustained and impactful interventions in our tertiary institutions.

“This project is both timely and strategic, as it would improve students accommodation and enhance the quality of teaching and learning thereby promoting better academic outcomes and institutional growth.

“We commend the Governor of Enugu State for his steadfast commitment in advancing education in Enugu State . We urge the contractors to adhere strictly to the programmes and specifications of the contract and equally to ensure timely delivery and highest standards of works.

Equally, the Commissioner for Education, Enugu State, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, while making his remarks on the occasion, described the ESUT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Okolie, as a strategic game-changer who has resolved to align with the strategic disruptive visions of the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Enugu State, Nkechi Ewoh, appreciated TETFund and all the development partners for initiating the project in ESUT and enjoined them to ensure quality and timely delivery of the hostel facility.

Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Okolie, thanked Governor Mbah, for ensuring the commencement of the perimeter fencing of the University. He also thanked the Governor for his several interventions in the University, including the recent release of N160 million to address some critical issues at ESUT College of Medicine, and the Teaching Hospital.

ESUT management and the staff of the contractor

He further stated that the last distress project in the University, the ESUT Press, would be completed in the next three months. “When it is completed, ESUT would probably be the only University in South East without a distress project. We have completed all the abandoned projects in the University out of trust, passion and commitment,” he said.

He also noted that the Management of the University has secured the trust of TETFund due to prudent and transparent execution of projects in the University.

Prof Okolie further stated that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has increased the admission quota of ESUT to over 8,700 , adding that the new 1,600 capacity hostel would help to take care of the hostel accommodation of the students.

While speaking on behalf of the students, the Secretary of the Student Union Government, Raphael Okeke, stated that the commencement of construction of yet another hostel in the University demonstrates that the Management of the University actually listens to the needs of the students.

This project which is under the Student Housing Project Scheme, would be developed by Afri Plus Nigeria Limited, and financed by Family Homes Nigeria Limited, and TETFund under partnership agreement. It has 12 months completion timeline.

Prof. Ikenna Ndu, a renowned Pediatrician, has pledged to partner with ESUT Monitor Newspaper to sensitize the public and advocate for children’s rights and welfare.

In an exclusive interview, Prof. Ndu stated that his commitment to giving back to society stems from his Igbo philosophy of selfless service in promoting common good.

Having reached the pinnacle of his academic career, Prof. Ndu expressed his desire to focus on advocating for children’s rights, leveraging media platforms like ESUT Monitor Newspaper to influence thousands. He emphasized that his 47th Inaugural Lecture themed “From Cradle to Crisis, advancing Paediatric survival in Challenged Health Care Landscape,” was aimed to convey a simple yet crucial message that children deserve better care.

Prof. Ndu urged parents to promptly seek medical attention for their children, stressing that many child fatalities are preventable and treatable if addressed early. Through this partnership, he aims to save thousands of lives by disseminating vital health information to a wider audience.

“There’s a Latin phrase. Deo ante dedi” , meaning God has given me. So I will give. I am already a professor of pediatrics, I have reached the zenith of my academic career. There’s no other promotion or recognition that can be given by my tears.

What I do is to give back to the system, give back to the country that has made me what I am today. That is why the rest of my life, I will focus on advocating for the child and the need to protect its rights and ensure the welfre.

If I see one child in a clinic and treat the child, that is one child, but if I carry out programs on a public scale like :ESUT Monitor Newspaper who I have pledge and sort for collaboration and other media channels that will be used to influence thousands of people, I will be happy

If I can use this medium to influence and teach doctors automatically, I have saved thousands and thousands of children as against taking care of one sitting down in a clinic.

On his part, the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa commended the erudite scholar for engaging with ESUT Monitor to promote child rights and welfare in the country and expressed the commitment of the paper to work collaboratively in carrying out campaign to that effect.

“Prof Ndu is no doubt a lover of the child. This is beyond his profession and when he approached the department to partner with our newspaper, we were glad because any message we push out their will not just create awareness but help to save lives. While the advocacy on child rights and welfare is critical at this point is that they are the most vulnerable and dependent in our society.

“When you give birth to a child, you are bound to take decisions for him/her until the child becomes of age. Therefore we are happy to identify with Professor Ndu in this regard and we will work collaboratively to ensure that his advocacy reached every nook and crannies of the society” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has emphasized the importance of professors in teaching and research and urged them to do more.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge on Thursday during the University’s 47th Inaugural Lecture delivered by a Professor of Paediatrics, Prof. Ikenna Ndu at the ESUT College of Medicine, Enugu.

He stated that “somebody might just be promoted to a professorship, and it could be by the number of articles and number of years you have spent, that does not mean you were creating any value. If you are a professor who is always creating value, students will always quote you, and students will always remember you.

“People who made me and put me where I am today are my former students. I thought there’s no student who has passed through me that would forget me eaaily, because you don’t only profess by teaching only the content of a book. You profess by teaching content of a book and giving them words of advice on how to survive in the world. Be their mentor.

“So, a lecturer or a professor should be somebody who is a guide, who directs you towards the correct purpose, and who can connect you to somewhere, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels said.

“He cited his experience in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a professor. “I took two students of UNN to Harvard, USA, and one of them is now a professor. He will never forget what I did for him, when I was supervising him.”

“It’s not about the classroom; it’s about practical things, to narrow the gap between the town and the gown. That is a professor; a professor leads the way and a professor mentors.”

He further stated that Prof Ikenna Ndụ is one of the professors who professed with relevance.

“As usual, Professor Ndu is one of the renowned professors we have. A global professor is a professor who has made his mark at the global stage. And he is such a humble young man, committed and passionate about the job he is doing.

“We are happy that, at least today, he has presented that paper and demonstrated that he is actually well-versed in Paediatrics. He is one of the best names you mention in Nigeria in Paediatric.”

Enugu – On Friday, October 25th, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, emerged winner of the 042 Coal City Debate competition organised by the Enugu State Government in collaboration with Zenith Bank

To emerge victorious, ESUT defeated the likes on University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN: State University of Medicine and Applied Sciences (SUMAS); Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) and more than ten others to secure the grand prize of fifteen million naira (₦15, 000 000.00)

“To reach this height, was not a mean venture”, Rtr. Eze Michael Uzochukwu, the President, Enugu State University Medical Students Association, ESUMSA, who represented ESUT at the competition, told ESUT Monitor in an exclusive interview.

“All the tertiary institutions in Enugu State took part in the competition, so our winning it was as a result of hardwork, commitment and sacrifices. It was not an easy venture but at the end, the outcome justifies the efforts,” he continued.

ESUMSA President, Rtr Eze Michael Uzochukwu

Rtr Eze explained that initially four ESUMAS’ teams applied for the competition, but two progressed. The two teams were Team Legion, who won the competition and Team Paragon. Both teams are made up of five debaters each.

“Our debate teams were formed through a randomized selection process, where members who drew the same number were grouped, allowing them to cultivate teamwork beyond their usual friendships. This approach encouraged participants to remain diligent, as working with unfamiliar team members fostered a natural accountability. Each team had a dedicated researcher responsible for gathering information, though other members also contributed.

“Additionally, some members of the disqualified teams joined the remaining team to strengthen its chances of victory. Balancing medical training with research on topics outside our academic focus was challenging, especially when some members had exams. Nonetheless, they remained committed to achieving excellence in both areas.”

He explained what the victory meant to the students, college and ESUT generally and encouraged students to remain focused in utilizing their potentials

“This victory is significant for our association, aligning with our vision to be a pioneering organization that other medical students nationwide admire. It reflects the mandate of our College Provost, Prof. Uchenna Ekwochi, who, in his first meeting with us following his appointment, expressed his desire for our College to be renowned, like a beacon set on a hill. I am pleased that we are meeting his expectations, as he has consistently been a supportive and inspirational leader.

ESUT Students displaying their Prize award

“The Vice-Chancellor is a revolutionist. He is changing the narrative and this victory is an outcome of his visionary leadership.

“I sincerely commend the Enugu State Government for creating a platform where youth can engage in constructive discussions on relevant issues. By promoting education, they are laying the groundwork for economic growth, equipping our youth for impactful future representation.

“I encourage every ESUT student to embrace the opportunity to represent our esteemed institution whenever it arises. We possess the potential to excel among our peers, and only by challenging ourselves can we identify and refine areas for growth, preparing us for even greater aspirations ahead,” ESUMSA President said.

The 042 Coal City Debate competition tagged “042 Cool_it’ is aimed at empowering youths with accurate information, fostering self-awareness, and enabling introspection regarding their core values. By cultivating informed opinions, it sought to challenge the prevailing culture of groupthink and support the development of individual belief systems based on reasoned perspectives.

After the victory, what next for ESUMSA and ESUT? President Eze Michael Uzuchukwu says the association is poised for greater challenges even as they seek to conquer South-East in the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) South-East quiz competition

ESUMSA members with the SSG, Professor Chidiebere Onyia

“Although the debate organized by the Enugu State Government has concluded, we are eager to participate in any upcoming regional or national debate competitions. Our quiz team is actively engaged in a competition organized by the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) South-East.

“In the two initial phases, our Medical Students Association excelled as the top-performing team. We are now preparing to secure victory in the final round, which would qualify us for the National Quiz Championship. This national event will bring together the best teams from medical schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones,” the President concluded.

Parents, guardians and indeed, the students of Enugu State University of Science and technology (ESUT) would heave a sigh of relief as the management of the university has disclosed that school fees will not be increased in the 2024/2025 academic session.

The University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor in an interview said there is no plan to increase school fees “for now”

“No school fees increment for now; we are aware that things are hard for both parents, students, and lecturers,” he said.

When asked to explain what he meant by “for now”, Mr Ugwu added “When I say “for now,” I mean for now. Of course, you cannot increase the school fees at the middle of the session, at least for 2024/2025 academic year, because the students that resume would start paying immediately. So you cannot tell them to pay for additional fees.

“Therefore, if by now there is nothing like an increment, just let it be known that for 2024/2025 academic calendar, nobody is talking about an increment,” he concluded.

This would no doubt, be a great news to the students and parents as the expectation has been high and rumour mills circulating that the management are exploring the option of upward review of the school fees in the new session.

Earlier in an interview shortly after the second semester examinations of the 2023/2024 academic session in August, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius+Michaels Okolie told ESUT monitor that considering the economic realities in the country, there is need for a review but added that the management is sensitive to the plights of the parents and guardians who would bear the brunt.

ESUT is among the state universities paying the least amount of school fees in Nigeria with the current schools fees at ₦124, 900.

The House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Regulations on Tuesday conducted oversight/inspection on the ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Project in ESUT.

Led by the Honourable member representing Afikpo North/South federal constituency of Ebonyi State, Hon Iduma Igariwey Enwo, the committee inspected the Faculty of Engineering Laboratory building facility situated close to the University Medical Centre, the ESUT main Campus, Agbani.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie and his management team, took the committee round the various laboratories in the faculty where the committee made critical observations and promised to report back to the House and CBN for promt actions.

Speaking with the media after the inspection, Hon Enwo said the committee was in the university as part of its oversight Function to assess the level of completion of CBN sponsored projects in South East

“We have come to look at the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) project in the South East, one of them is located in this great institution, so that’s why I came here. I came to the Faculty of Engineering; the building was put up by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“Firstly, I’m happy I came here and saw the building, which means the contract was consummated. But I have also made other observations, like the need to have the place equipped so that it justifies the intention of the Central Bank that set it up in the first place.
So, I think part of the recommendation is to see that the place is equipped.

“Some other issues would also concern other departments and agencies of government, but mine specifically is to inspect the project attracted by the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the issues of maintenance could probably belong to the university itself,” he said

Hon Enwo who was the former President of Ohaneze Ndígbo, explained that the facility would be beneficial to the students in particular and the university in general

“The important thing is that we have an institution like this that is specifically tailored to the development of science and technology, which is the future of many countries. What we hope is that the students, for whom we have this project in the first place, will take advantage of it with the equipment and facilities I have seen here. The students should appropriate it and then make the best use of it, and the institution also should count themselves lucky. It’s not every institution that benefited from this.
Their duty is to make sure that it is being maintained and kept in proper shape,’ he said

Hon Enwo noted that the Faculty of Engineering two-storey building laboratory is the only project the apex bank is sponsoring in South East Tertiary institutions

Earlier during the Committee’s courtesy visit to the management of the university, the Vice-Chancellor reitrated the need for timely completion of of the laboratory to enable the university make optimal use of it.
