As the students of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) prepare for their 2025/2026 first semester examinations which is due to start on Monday, March 2nd, the newly admitted students have been advised to shun their social media activities and face their studies.

Registrar of the University, Mr Ambrose Ugwu handed the waning during the Orientation programme for fresh students held at the Dr Ndubuisi Mbah Multi-purpsoe Auditorium on Wednesday.

Addressing the students on the topic: “University Academic Regulations, Registration, Deferment, Withdrawal/Change of Course”, the Registrar cautioned them against running foul of university rules, voluntary withdrawal from school without approval from the management as well as consequences of violating the rules.

Mr Ugwu who disclosed that as the Registrar of the University, he is also the Secretary to the Council and University Senate, cautioned the new students to avoid spending unnecessary time on social media and face their studies squarely.

Cross section of students during the orientation

“University is governed by rules and not sentiments. Everything we do here is procedural. As an institution, we understand that students will face challenges and that is why the first thing you do as soon as you confirm your admission is to pay the required fees and carry out your registration processes. Until you register, you are not considered a bonafide member of the university.

“Secondly, in case for any reason you want to withdraw from the university or defer your admission, inform the management via letter through your HOD and you must get approval. Always seek for advice before you take any decision regarding your admission. Cultivate good relationship with your lecturers because they are here to help you.

“Above all, ESUT is not a place for lazy students. You must take your academic activities seriously. It is time to forget Facebook and face your books” he said.

Earlier in his opening address, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie congratulated the students for gaining admission into ESUT and urged them to make their parents proud.

TE VC advised them to shun act capable of cutting short their time in the university and advised them to “shun examination malpractice, avoid bad company and be law abiding. The university has reward for excellence and students who distinguished themselves will be rewarded,” the VC, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha, said.

While delivering a speech on the topic: “The Student Affairs unit and Primary Functions, Hostel Management and Life in the University”, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof Ifeoma Okwo charged the students to make enquiries from the unit before they join any group.

Professor Okwo who emphasised that the Department of Student Affairs handles non-academic related issues as they affect students, said the unit will always be there to help them at all times. “Your welfare is our priority, when you are subjected to maltreatment by anybody, report to us. But I urge you to remain level-headed. Obey the rules and respect all the staff. Once again, congratulations and welcome to ESUT,” she said.

Speaking on “Enlightenment of Examinations Malpractice and Punishments”, Chairman, ESUT Examinations Malpractice Committee, Prof Gabriel Ugwu explained the dangers in examinations malpractice and admonished the students to avoid all forms of exam misconducts as such have corresponding consequences.

“For instance, bringing phone inside the examination hall, whether you used it or not, once you are caught, you will face two years suspension. If you are caught impersonating, it carries immediate expulsion”, he warned.

In her address, the Acting President, Students Union Government, SUG, ESUT, Comrade Chizara Nwodo, while welcoming the students to the University, warned them against carefree life on campus and urged them to be cautious.

“University life comes with freedom, but freedom must be guided by responsibility and discipline. ESUT is a centre of intellectual engagement, not physical confrontation. Disagreements must be resolved through dialogue and proper channels.

“Violence only destroys opportunities and reputations. Bullying in any form physical -verbal, emotional, or social – will not be tolerated. No student should feel unsafe or intimidated. Strength is shown through kindness, maturity, and leadership, not through oppression.

“Always remember you are loved here. The University Management wants you to succeed. The Students’ Union Government is here to protect and represent you. Your fellow students are your brothers and sisters. We are one ESUT. We are one family. And together, we will grow, achieve, and excel.”

Other speakers including the Director Medical Services, Dr Njideka Njoku ; Director, Career Services, Prof Uzoamaka Okafor, Director of Sports, Mr Ogbodo Moses, and ESUT Chief security officer, Mr Thomas Okolo advised students on the need to look after their health, pursue other careers not related to their field, engage in sporting actives and be security cautious.

According to a statement signed by the university’s acting spokesperson, Habib Yakoob, the affected students were found culpable of offences including cult related activities, threat to life and assault, conspiracy, burglary and theft.0

The Senate of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), now Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the expulsion of 28 students over what it described as serious disciplinary offences, including cult-related activities, examination malpractice and drug use.

The decision was approved at the institution’s 191st regular meeting of the Senate held on 28 January 2026 at its main campus, following consideration of a report by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

In a statement signed by the university’s acting spokesperson, Habib Yakoob, the senate said the affected students were found culpable of offences including cult related activities, threat to life and assault, conspiracy, burglary and theft.

Others were examination malpractice, possession and use of hard drugs, and falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university’s admission portal.

The Senate also approved sanctions against students who failed to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.

In addition to the expulsions, the university withdrew the certificates of 15 former students who allegedly ignored several invitations by the committee.

Also, nine students were exonerated after investigations found them not culpable.

Another 33 students received warnings for various infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.

The decisions, the university said, were based on the recommendations of the SDC after thorough review of each case.

Cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions

Cultism, the presence of secret confraternities and violent student groups, has been a long-standing issue in Nigeria’s universities.

While many of these groups began decades ago with student fellowship roots, they have increasingly been linked with violence, organised crime and clashes that sometimes spill beyond campuses into surrounding communities.

In April 2025, rival cult groups clashed at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State, prompting police to arrest at least one suspect after gunshots were fired during a confrontation.

Again in September, authorities arrested suspects in connection with a cult-related killing of a student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Niger State in 2025, highlighting how violent sectarian activity linked to secret societies can lead to loss of life.

‘Integrity is sacrosanct’

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Hakeem Fawehinmi, said the institution would continue to uphold discipline and enforce its rules and regulations without compromise.

Mr Fawehinmi, a professor, said the academic integrity of the University is sacrosanct, and the institution is determined to see that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned.

“Our goal is not only to enforce discipline but also to guide our students towards responsible citizenship and academic excellence,” he said.

He commended the SDC for its thorough and diligent handling of the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions that could jeopardise their academic pursuits.

He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.

He added that the institution would continue to strengthen student engagement, counselling and orientation programmes to promote responsible conduct and prevent disciplinary infractions.

Ahead of the commencement of the second semester examinations in ESUT, a lecture in the Department of Mass Communication, Mr Joel Asogwa as advised the students to shun examination malpractice of face expulsion.

Mr Asogwa who is the Examination Officer of the department stated this on Thursday during the orientation programme for year one students in the department.

Speaking on the topic “Examination Malpractice and Penalties”, Mr Asogwa disclosed that examination maleficence is not tolerated in the department in particular and ESUT at large

Mrs Christiana Agbo delivered a lecture on dressing

He urged the students to face their studies serious, add lecture, participate in quiz and carry out assignments given to them.

The exam officer frowned at students who do not attend classes but only come to class during examination and winder what they were coming to do.

He enumerated some of the examination offences in the university to include: assault on an invigilator and impersonation which attract immediate expulsion from the university.

Other offences he mentioned are: “students involvement in examination leakage, destruction of evidence relating to the case, smuggling already prepared answer scripts into the examination hall, smuggling out examination questions from exam hall, writing solutions on any part of the body clothes and smuggling out answer scripts from exam hall all of which attracts three years suspension, each for second offenders and one year suspension for first offenders.

“I thank the department for this great opportunity because now you have all been guided but I must say that on the judgement day, may you not be found guilty of any of these offence. To be forewarned is to be forearmed,” he stated.

Speaking on the topic “Dress Code and Indecent Dressing”, another lecturer in the department, Mr Christiana Agbo took the students through in decent and Indecent Dressing stressing that both have their repercussions.

Year one Course Reps (1&2) Precious Eneh and Onyekachi Agu gave a vite of thanks after the programme

Mrs Agbo who condemned indecent and improper dressing among the students implored them to always dress neat, look neat and be respected.

She identified three different types of dressing among the students. “There are three different kinds of dressing among you, the students. They are, decent dressing, indecent dressing and improper dressing. Decent dressing, which is the ideal is not too common among you. Many of you are guilty of indecent dressing while majority of you dress improperly. Improper dressing is when you put on the sky-blue shirt but refused to tuck the shirt in or wear bathroom slippers. The department frowns at this and now you have been made aware of this, we want to you to turn a new leaf,” she said.

The second semester examination in ESUT will commence on Tuesday, July 23, and end on Thursday, August 8, 2024
