The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences held its 45th Matriculation Ceremony on Friday, 20 February 2026, officially admitting the new batch of students into the programme.

The event took place at the faculty auditorium and drew a large turnout of academic staff, university officials, parents, and well-wishers who came to mark the milestone with the fresh students.

In his address, Pharmacist obinna Onuh,  welcomed the matriculants and urged them to engage fully with their studies and colleagues. He stressed that doing well in Pharmacy goes far beyond just attending lectures. “Success demands seriousness, cooperation, and real commitment,” he said. He also passed on a firm message from the Vice-Chancellor: the university has zero tolerance for cultism. He added that the pharmacy curriculum is already demanding enough to keep any serious student completely occupied, “except you are the type that does not want to read.”

Lecturers during the Matriculation

The highlight of the programme was the oath-taking, administered by the Faculty Officer, Mr. Obi Nnaedozie. The new students solemnly pledged to obey the university’s rules and to uphold the ethical standards of the pharmacy profession.

Parents had their own moment during a special interactive session where they asked questions and shared advice with their children as they begin this long academic journey.

The ceremony wrapped up with everyone singing the National Anthem, followed by a closing prayer led by Dr. Okoh Ginika, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy.

Afterwards, several of the new students shared how they felt. One called the occasion “exciting” and said it made the journey ahead feel more real and meaningful.

The faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Enugu State University if Science and Technology (ESUT) will on Thursday March 27, 2025 hold Induction/Oath-taking Ceremony for new graduates.

The 5th Induction ceremony which will feature 63 graduates will hold at the Barr Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Multi-purpose Auditorium in Agbani Main Campus of the university.

The Registrar/CEO, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, (PCN) Pharm Ibrahim Ahmed Babashehu, will administer the Oath on the students commencing from 10am while High Chief Pham J.C. Agwu, General Manager, Tayiek Pharmacy Limited, will deliver the keynote speech.

The Induction ceremony will be chaired by Pharm Jasper Onyeka, MD/CEO Impact Pharmaceuticals Limited, Enugu; the Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie is the Chief Host whereas the Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharm Prof Chika Mbah will host the guests.

Speaking in an interview, Chairman, Induction/Oath-taking Committee, Pharm Dr Cyril Aninwike, said the induction ceremony marks the official admission of the graduates into the pharmacy profession. He stressed that the ceremony will also give the new graduates the licence to practice the profession having spent five years in the university.

“Induction/Oath-taking ceremony is a professional undertaking because you cannot practice Pharmacy without being inducted. You cannot even say you graduated from a Pharmacy school without being inducted. It is a very critical end-product programme for the training of pharmacists.

“It is coordinated by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN). They are the body in charge of developing policies, Pharmacy education, registration of Pharmacists and controlling of practice. If they have not inducted you, you are not qualified to practice whether you studied in the country or abroad and you want to practice in Nigeria. They administer the oath. On Thursday, the graduate will be administered into an oath and when that is done, they are now qualified to put “Pharm” as their title before their name,” Pharm Aninweike said.

He explained the importance of the induction to ESUT. “This is the 5th consecutive induction/oath-taking ceremony in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in ESUT. It is a positive indication that the school is operating at optimum and students are inducted as and when due. Since we started our induction ceremony, we have not lost accreditation nor delayed and this is our 5th induction ceremony. “

Enugu Agbani – The 44th matriculation ceremony of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) took place on February 21, 2025. The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, Dr. John Chika Mba, welcomed freshers into the faculty.

Dr. Mba expressed satisfaction with the ceremony, praising its organization and timeliness. “We started on time and ended on time; it was very orderly. We thank the administration and the Vice-Chancellor of ESUT for their support in making it a success.”

Dr. Mba also endorsed the decentralized system of matriculation, citing its effectiveness in reducing crowds and maintaining orderliness.

He advised the newly matriculated students to focus on their academic pursuits and personal development. “Not everyone is given the opportunity to be in a university, so they should use it wisely,” he said. “Learning is not only about academics; they should also groom themselves morally and spiritually.”

Dr. Ugochukwu Jane Ijeoma from the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology shared her impressions of the event. “In fact, it was warmly organized, and the parents were very happy,” she said.

Dr. Ijeoma recommended the decentralized system, highlighting its benefits in promoting interaction between the faculty and parents, as well as enabling the faculty to connect with students on a personal level.

She advised the students, “Whatever you will become starts from today. Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, and there are expectations from your parents for bringing you here.”

Students from the faculty shared their experiences as freshers. Mmesoma Ugwota, Uba Bond, and Mmesoma Ogwuike expressed their thoughts on the matriculation ceremony.

“I feel indifferent about it because it’s just another step forward for me,” said Uba Bond.

Mmesoma Ugwota shared her excitement, saying, “Things have just been new to me, and I’m still adapting to everything. I feel happy because I’m now officially a student in ESUT, and it’s left for me to work hard and convocate.”

Mmesoma Ogwuike also shared her experience, providing additional insights into the ceremony.

The matriculation ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the students as they embarked on their academic pursuits.
