Three years ago, when Peter Ndubuisi Mbah assumed office as Executive Governor of Enugu State, expectations were as high as they were cautious. The state was grappling with the triple burden of economic stagnation, deepening insecurity, and infrastructural neglect — challenges that had accumulated across successive administrations and had come to define the people’s weary relationship with government. Few dared to hope for swift transformation. Many had grown accustomed to grand make-believe promises dissolving into the familiar disappointments of Nigerian governance. Yet, three years on, Governor Mbah’s administration has rewritten the narrative in ways that are difficult to dismiss.

From his inaugural address to the people of Enugu State, Mbah declared with characteristic conviction that “Tomorrow is Here”, a phrase that might easily have been dismissed as the rhetorical flourish of a freshly sworn-in politician. Instead, it has proven to be a governing philosophy, a lens through which every policy initiative, every capital project, and every social intervention has been conceived and executed. It is not a slogan posted on billboards alone; it is a commitment carved into the institutions, industries, and communities that his administration has touched.

Industrial Revival: Breathing Life into Enugu’s Economic Soul

Gov Peter Mbah joined APC in October last year

Perhaps no dimension of Mbah’s governance has been as symbolically powerful as the revival of industries that had long been consigned to decay. Niger Gas, Hotel Presidential, and Sunrise Flour Mills, once proud emblems of Enugu’s industrial ambition, later reduced to rusting monuments of neglect, now hum with renewed commercial activity. Their resuscitation is not merely an economic statistic; it is a statement of political will and a source of renewed pride for a people who had watched the state’s industrial heritage abandoned and allowed to crumble before their very eyes.

More strategically significant is the commissioning of the Haier Factory, a $20 million assembly plant for the manufacturing of laptops, smartphones and their repair spare parts. In a state historically associated with coal mining and civil service, this huge transformative facility marks a decisive pivot toward the knowledge economy. Enugu is repositioning itself not simply as a rehabilitation story but as a forward-looking technology hub, a destination for innovation-driven investment that speaks to the aspirations of its youthful population.

Education Reimagined: Classrooms for a Digital Generation

If industry speaks to economic survival, education speaks to civilisational ambition. Mbah’s administration has undertaken one of the most sweeping educational reforms in Enugu’s recent history through the Smart Green Schools initiative, now operational across most of the 260 wards of the state. These are not merely refurbished classrooms; they are brand-new laboratories of the future, a place where children engage with robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies. Each pupil is equipped with a personal tablet, and daily school meals address the nutritional dimension of learning that too often goes ignored in policy discourse.

The implications are generational. Children in rural wards who might never have seen or used a computer are now exploring coding platforms and digital problem-solving tools. This bold initiative bridges the digital divide not as a future aspiration but as a present reality preparing Enugu’s next generation for the demands of a global economy that will not wait for stragglers.

Mobility and Connectivity: A State on the Move

Transport infrastructure has long been both a metaphor and a measure of governance quality in Nigeria. On this front, the Mbah administration has invested with visible commitment. The introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses, equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, has eased commuting between Nsukka and Enugu, offering passengers a glimpse of the modern, liveable city that the governor envisions. Architecturally impressive bus terminals at Abakpa, Nsukka, and Garki further anchor this vision in physical form, turning transit points into civic landmarks.

Most ambitious of all is Enugu Air, the state-owned airline that has launched with an initial fleet of six aircraft. A state airline is an audacious proposition at any time, but in a Nigerian political environment habitually sceptical of government-run commercial enterprises, Enugu Air carries the weight of both symbolism and strategic intent. Its success will be watched closely, both as a transport solution and as a test of the administration’s capacity to manage complex ventures beyond the political arena.

Healthcare for All: From the Ward to the Specialist Theatre

Enugu International Hospital

Governor Mbah’s healthcare vision operates on two complementary axes: breadth and depth. The establishment of Primary Health Centres in every ward ensures that the most basic healthcare is no longer the exclusive preserve of the rich in urban areas. Communities that once relied on patent medicine stores as their first port of medical call now have functional health facilities within reach. Simultaneously, the construction of a 300-bed Super Specialist Hospital signals an ambition that extends beyond basic care into medical excellence. This is an institution designed not only to serve Enugu’s residents but to attract medical tourism and reduce the costly haemorrhage of Nigerians seeking specialist treatment abroad.

Security Restored: Reclaiming the Night

No governance achievement carries greater weight in the daily lives of ordinary citizens than security. Enugu, like much of the South-East, had suffered a period of debilitating insecurity, a situation that severely curtailed economic activities, dampened investor confidence, inflicted fear of untimely deaths into the spines of ordinary citizens and cast a pall over civic life. The establishment of a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre in the premises of the Enugu State Government House, enabling real-time surveillance and coordinated security response, has been central to the administration’s counteroffensive against criminal networks.

The results have been visible, tangible, and felt. Night markets, once abandoned as too dangerous to patronise, now thrive again. Residents move with a freedom they had almost forgotten. This restoration of public safety is not a rhetorical claim; it is attested by the renewed commercial energy visible in the state’s markets and streets. Security, in this administration, has been treated not as a luxury but as the prerequisite upon which all other development rests.

Agriculture and Rural Development: Connecting the Farm to the Market

In a state where significant portions of the population derive their livelihoods from farming, the Mbah administration’s investment in agricultural modernisation carries profound economic implications. The introduction of a tractor assembly plant signals a commitment to mechanised, large-scale agriculture, a departure from the subsistence-level farming that has historically characterised rural Enugu. Complementing this, new road construction projects are steadily linking rural farming communities to urban markets, addressing the perennial problem of produce spoilage and the chronic inability of smallholder farmers to access buyers at fair prices.

Assessment: A Record Defined by Ambition and Accountability

A balanced assessment of Governor Mbah’s three years on the saddle cannot ignore the challenges that persist. Infrastructure projects of this scale inevitably carry implementation risks; promises of industrial revival require sustained private sector confidence to bear lasting fruit; and managing a state airline, specialist hospital, and a digital education revolution simultaneously demands institutional depth that must be continually cultivated and resourced. Critics who point to gaps and unmet targets are not wrong to do so; that is the function of democratic accountability.

Yet the overall arc of this administration is undeniable. In sector after sector – education, health, industry, transport, security, and agriculture – Enugu is making the desired progress. The pace may be contested; the direction should not be. Governor Peter Mbah has chosen to govern as though tomorrow genuinely matters, deploying the instruments of state not as patronage tools but as levers of structural transformation. For a state that had grown accustomed to inertia dressed up as governance, that choice is in itself truly historic.

Three years on, the mantra “Tomorrow is Here” has earned its credibility. Tomorrow, for Enugu, is no longer a consolation deferred to some indefinite future. Under Mbah’s watch, it is arriving – imperfect, contested, and still incomplete, as all genuine transformation must be, but arriving, nonetheless.

Civil servants in Enugu State have expressed widespread excitement following the approval of promotion and conversion for 2,114 public workers by Governor Peter Mbah.

The affected workers participated in the November/December 2025 promotion and conversion exercises conducted across the state civil service.

The approval, which takes immediate effect, also covers the financial implications of the new ranks, ensuring that beneficiaries begin to enjoy their upgraded status without delay.

Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission, Mr. Robison Odo, who disclosed the development on Tuesday in Enugu, described the gesture as timely and morale-boosting, likening it to an Easter gift for workers.

According to him, the exercise cut across officers on Grade Levels 01 to 17 who successfully passed the promotion interviews.

“The Executive Governor recently approved the release of the promotion and conversion of 2,114 officers who participated in the 2025 exercise. The approval also takes immediate effect with the financial benefits attached,” Odo said.

He assured that the commission would expedite implementation of the governor’s directive.

Odo commended the administration for its sustained commitment to workers’ welfare, noting that prompt payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities had become a hallmark of the government.

He further highlighted the state’s N80,000 minimum wage as exceeding the national benchmark, describing it as a clear demonstration of the governor’s worker-friendly policies.

“Workers are genuinely excited. This is a strong motivation for improved productivity and commitment to service. We deeply appreciate the governor for prioritising our welfare despite ongoing infrastructural development across the state,” he added.

The commission chairman pledged continued discipline, innovation and productivity within the civil service to align with the administration’s development agenda.

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Dr. Godwin Anigbo, said the governor’s policies had created an enabling environment for workers to embrace reforms and deliver optimally.

He noted that the administration’s focus on innovation had transformed the public service, equipping workers with modern skills required for efficient service delivery.

“We are working closely with the Civil Service Commission to ensure that workers are adequately prepared to align with the government’s reform-driven agenda. The administration has introduced forward-looking initiatives that are repositioning the service for greater efficiency,” Anigbo said.

He added that the government’s investment in capacity building, including the training of civil servants in digital competencies, was facilitating the transition from analogue to technology-driven operations.

Anigbo also lauded the approval for the establishment of a public service training institute, describing it as a critical step towards strengthening institutional capacity and improving service delivery.

Despite the state’s heavy investment in infrastructure and other capital-intensive projects, he said the administration had maintained a strong commitment to workers’ welfare.

The Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel, has said Enugu is blessed to have a replica of Lee Kuan Yew in Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose performances will end up putting Enugu on the map of the world for its industrialisation, infrastructural development, and all-round growth.

Speaking with newsmen in Enugu on Tuesday, after organizing a birthday party in celebration of Governor Mbah’s 54th birthday ceremony, Architect Onyekachi stated that at 54 years of age and almost three years in office, Governor Mbah has achieved a level in leadership that has made Enugu the best destination for investment.

He stated that Governor Mbah’s administration is one that has favoured most industrialists, especially those in the real estate business, because of numerous advancements recorded in land management through the establishment of ENGIS, the reform of the Enugu State Ministry of Lands, as well as the survey department managed by the Office of the Surveyor General of the state.

He posited that his leadership has made Enugu’s political terrain peaceful owing to how he carries everybody along and also his commitment to accepting criticism, adding that he is not just a replica of Lee Kuan Yew but also a combination of Charlemagne, Deng Xiaoping, and Mahatma Gandhi.

Architect Onyekachi, however, prayed for God’s continuous blessings on the Governor as he starts his re-election campaign process. He further noted that the Governor’s vision for economic expansion and job creation is already yielding visible results across various sectors of the state. He maintained that investors are beginning to see Enugu as a reliable hub for business activities, given the improving infrastructure and policy direction. He also expressed confidence that with sustained efforts, the state will witness even greater transformation in the coming years.

The Enugu State Governor, Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has urged young entrepreneurs to take full advantage of partnerships to strengthen and expand their businesses.

The Governor gave the charge at the “Tomorrow is Here Initiative short-term Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training and Empowerment Programme” for youths drawn from the 17 local government areas of Enugu State.

The event, held on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre, featured 102 selected business groups.

Governor Mbah, represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, explained that the empowerment programme was one of his administration’s initiatives aimed at fulfilling campaign promises made two years ago at Godfrey Okoye University, as captured in his manifesto to improve the quality of life for the youth.

According to him, his commitment to this promise has also led to the construction of 260 smart schools, roads, and primary health care centres across all wards in the state.

He advised beneficiaries not to regret the apprenticeship programme they had undergone, stressing that it would serve as a solid foundation for running successful businesses.

> “Today is one of the days we have looked forward to. Everyone here is endowed with skills and potential; opportunities like this are meant to unbottle them. Two years ago, youth empowerment and youth education took centre stage in our manifesto. You should have no regrets for the apprenticeship you have undertaken. What you have done will give you the basis to explore the business world,” he said.

Governor Mbah commended Ozoigbondu, Engr. Ezenukpo Prince Arthur Eze, for his financial support, as well as the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, and the leadership of Potters Wheel Foundation for their roles in building the capacity of the state’s youth.

He also directed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to periodically monitor the progress of the new entrepreneurs to ensure their success.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, expressed gratitude to the Governor for approving the initiative, to Prince Arthur Eze for financing the programme, to the 17 local government chairmen, and to the State House of Assembly for passing the Youth Development Bill into law.

“Between October 2024 and April 2025, the initiative set out to train 100 youths per local government area in entrepreneurship and vocational skills, especially in food production, cosmetology, and hygiene product manufacturing. Our initial target was 1,700 youths, but through hard work and strong collaboration, we proudly exceeded that number,” he stated.

“Today, pursuant to His Excellency’s directive, we are empowering 102 youth-led businesses in Enugu State and creating 600 new direct youth jobs.”

The implementing partner and President of Potter’s Wheel Foundation Founder, Pastor Godsown Odilichukwu Onuzulike, also thanked the Governor and the Commissioner for empowering 1,020 youths and training 2,073 youths across the state.

The highlight of the programme was the inspection of products and the unveiling ceremony by the Governor, followed by the empowerment of 102 business groups.

…Native doctors, ‘Ezenwanyi’, Herbalists, Others to be Registered, Regulated_

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has transmitted an Executive Bill to the Enugu State House of Assembly to checkmate criminal activities among native doctors, herbalists and related persons in the state.

The proposed legislation entitled “Maintenance of Internal Security, Vigilance and Order”, also outlaws money rituals otherwise known as ‘okite’, criminal bulletproof charms, otherwise known as ‘odeshi.’

It equally outlaws illegal use or occupation of forests and property for criminal activities.

By the provisions of Section 3 (1), “Every person, who engages in the practice or rendering of spiritual services within the state, whether as a native doctor, herbalist, spiritualist, chief priest, diviner, seer, or by any other traditional or spiritual title or designation, shall be registered with the ministry, department or agency (MDA) of the state as may be designated by the Governor for that purpose.”

Practising without registration will attract a fine of not less than N1 million and not more than N5 million or two-year imprisonment or both.

Section 15 of the proposed legislation provides, “Any person who, under the guise of spiritual or traditional practice (including but not limited to the practices commonly referred to as ‘okite’, ‘ezenwanyi’, or any other mystical or ritual name/form) administers or causes to be administered any charm, substance, or object on or for another person, for the purpose of: (a) invincibility and other forms of protection to facilitate the commission of any criminal offence; or (b) acquiring wealth or benefits by supernatural means outside any lawful means of livelihood, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of six (6) years or to a fine of not less than five million naira (N5,000,000), or both.

“Any person, who falsely claims to possess supernatural powers or misleads the public into believing so, for the purpose of gaining reward, or influence (whether financially or otherwise) commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of three (3) years or to a fine of not less than three million naira (N3,000,000), or both.”

It further provides that where a person claims spiritual powers under this law, “the burden shall lie on such a person, during investigation, to provide reasonable proof of the purported supernatural abilities claimed.”

In the same vein, Section 16 prescribes six years of imprisonment or a fine of N5 million or both against anyone, who uses or knowingly permits the use of any religious place, for the commission or facilitation of a crime, in addition to sealing of the facility pending the outcome of investigation.

Section 17 stipulates that “Any person who performs, facilitates, demands, directs, or participates in any ritual or traditional practice involving the use of human parts, or who causes another person to do so, commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of twenty (20) years without the option of a fine.”

Under Section 13, “Any person found in a camp, bush, or forest within Enugu State without any reasonable or lawful cause, and under circumstances giving rise to reasonable suspicion of involvement in any criminal activity, shall be promptly handed over to the Nigeria Police Force or any competent security agency for proper investigation in accordance with the law.”

On the use of forests and property for banditry and kidnapping, the Bill proposes, “Any person who owns, occupies, or has control over any land or building, whether located in a forest or elsewhere, and knowingly allows it to be used as a camp, hideout, or base for kidnapping, the unlawful detention of victims, the collection of ransom, or for any other activity connected to kidnapping or banditry, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of twenty (20) years without the option of a fine.”

Also, any person, who knowingly allows any person, who is not a member of the nation’s security agencies to reside, camp, or establish any form of settlement on his or her land, except for farming, is liable on conviction to two-year imprisonment without an option of fine.

Any person who knowingly fails to report suspicious use of their property, and fails to report the same to the security agencies “commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of two (2) years without the option of a fine.”

“Subject to the provisions of Section 3 of the Criminal Code (Second Amendment) Law 2016, any land, property, or structure used in contravention of Sections 7, 8, 9 and 10 of this Law shall be forfeited to the Government of Enugu State,” the Bill further provides.

Again, money, property, and other proceeds of theft, robbery, kidnapping, among others are to be forfeited to the Enugu State Government, unless a lawful and verifiable owner claims it within a reasonable time.

The Bill equally makes it mandatory for private security outfits to register with the State Government, providing the particulars of the outfit and all armed security operatives employed or deployed by them, while all presidents-general of town unions are to submit security reports to local government council chairmen or any other department designated by the government not later than the first week of every new month.

In the same vein, landlords and proprietors of hotels, guest houses, and estate associations are demanded by the Bill to obtain and transmit valid means of identification, phone number, occupation, and place of work of their prospective tenants and guests to the relevant authority.

Proprietors of hotels and other lodging facilities shall install a surveillance camera within public areas to record and submit records of activities to relevant authorities.

Penalties for contravention of this provision range from a fine of not less than N500,000 for landlords to N1 million.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah has inaugurated the South East zonal office of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, saying it would open a new horizon for the youths of the region and move the nation closer to diversifying the economy.

Commissioning the office located at Nigeria Construction and Furniture Company (NCFC) Building at Onitsha Road, GRA, Enugu, Mbah commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, for the initiative, promising close collaboration with the Ministry and Agency.

“The call to diversify our economy, both at the national and the subnational levels has never been more compelling than now; and there are a few sectors that hold the opportunities for us to accomplish that like the information and technology space.

“But, just having the opportunity without bringing them to fruition won’t just cut it for us. The fact that opportunity exists, we must then take steps; and for me, I think that is what this NITDA presence in Enugu represents.

“It is an opportunity for our teeming young people to have the platform to imbue themselves with lifelong skillsets that would prepare them for the dynamic global workplace of today and tomorrow,” he stated.

Speaking earlier, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, expressed delight at what he described as an extraordinary technological revolution in Enugu State, saying the NITDA South East Zonal Office would serve as a permanent bridge between national policy and local potential.

“In just under two years, this state has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most promising frontiers for innovation. What we are witnessing here is not just progress—it is momentum; and I am proud that today, we are adding fuel to that momentum.

“This commissioning of the NITDA Regional Office in Enugu is far more than the opening of a building. It is the establishment of a permanent bridge between national policy and local potential.

“It is a strategic move under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — a commitment to decentralising opportunity, deepening inclusion, and unlocking the full power of Nigeria’s digital economy across every region.

“By placing NITDA closer to the people, right here in the South East, we are saying clearly: no region should have to wait for innovation to reach them. Innovation must grow with them.

“This new office will serve as an engine room for digital skills development, through programs like the Three Million Technical Talent initiative; support for startups and indigenous tech solutions; regulatory advisory to help businesses thrive within the frameworks that protect Nigerians; and closer partnerships with state governments, academia, and the private sector. And there is no better place to launch this than in Enugu — a state that is not only dreaming of the future, but building it.

“I want to commend Governor Peter Mbah for proving what determined, technology-focused governance can achieve in such a short time. We are not just here to witness Enugu’s transformation. We are here to amplify it,” he said.

Tijani enjoined the young people of the South East region to grab the opportunities presented by the new office.

“To our young innovators, developers, and entrepreneurs – you now have a home in NITDA. Use it. Grow through it; and let it become the platform from which your ideas reach the world.

“Together, we will ensure that the story of Nigeria’s digital economy is not written from one place — it will be co-authored in every corner of this nation, and Enugu is leading the way,” he added.

The commissioning was also witnessed by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, among other dignitaries.
