Enugu – The Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah has announced the approval of ₦80, 000 new minimum wage for the state workers

The Governor who disclosed this in his social media handles on Thursday, said that the payment of the new minimum wage will take effect from October, 2024.

Making the announcement, the governor said the government appreciates the hardwork and sacrifices the workers in the state have exhibited adding that their welfare will always be prioritized.

“I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024.

“We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises,” he said.

The Governor further said: “It bears restating that the minimum wage of N80,000, approved by our administration for both state and local government workers, reflects our commitment to leaving behind lasting legacies of improved living conditions.

“Our dedication to workers’ welfare is driven by a firm belief that a motivated workforce is essential for driving economic progress. There’s an undeniable link between an inspired workforce and the bold economic targets we have set for our beloved state.

“That is why we are committed to ensuring our workforce remains highly motivated, laying the groundwork for reducing poverty and achieving unprecedented economic growth in Enugu. For us, the best way to recognise that labour creates wealth is by ensuring that those who generate this wealth – the workforce – are well rewarded.

“We consistently showed this commitment through the timely payment of wage awards, a practice we committed to sustaining until a new wage structure was in place as we have done today.

“Indeed, our sights are firmly set on a prosperous Enugu, where growth and progress are not just goals but the very heartbeat of our journey. Let’s keep doing more.”

The newly appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa has identified priority areas that need urgent attention in tackling the challenges facing the university.

Speaking with ESUT Monitor shortly after their first Council Sitting on Tuesday following inauguration by the State governor, the former Permanent Secretary of FCT listed funding, insecurity, epileptic power supply as well as indiscipline as major issues that need to be holistically tackled if the needed new administrative drive will succeed.

Mr Ohaa who noted that no university can survive under such conditions, however said that the Council’s first sitting will provide a road map in tackling the challenges headlong

“The first sitting was very wonderful, there’s rendition of all the challenges and all the gains from the Vice-Chancellor and we are happy because the man has the full dossier of what you people are passing through in ESUT.

“Everything is anchored on funding, not only subvention, there are a lot of uncompleted projects here, there is no water and there is no steady electricity supply. No university will succeed in this type of environment. Students need to have a level of good environment for them to be able to learn and bring the best out of them

“Secondly is insecurity and disciplinary issues.

“We are going to tackle most of these things and then the students and lecturers relationships so that nobody will take advantage of any other. You know all these fraudulent practices, even students blackmailing lecturers; we will not tolerate that. If a lecturer is not meeting up with the standards expected of him, we are not going to tolerate that.

“We have looked into it, asked questions and we are looking at compiling a strategic document so we can articulate the best way the ruling plan.

“That strategic document we are going to come up with, is what will be our compass that will direct all our actions because after that we are going to discuss with the Visitor of the University, who is the governor of the state and from there we can take bearing.”

It could be recalled that the Enugu State Governor through a memo on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 announced the appointment of Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa as a replacement for Most Revd. Bishop Godfrey Onah as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the university.

Similarly, Prof. Uchenna Ekwochi replaces late Prof Innocent Okafor as Provost, ESUT College of Medicine, ESUCOM.

Other members of the board also approved by the Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah are: Prof. Ikenna Chukwu, Engr. James Ajibo Ifeanyi, Gladys Ngozi Okoro, Hon. Chinedu Onu and Dr. Eric Oluedo.

…Ex President Obasanjo, Obi, Enugu State Gov. attend Valedictory Church Service

By Amaechi Agbo

The Archbishop of Enugu Province and Bishop of Enugu Anglican Communion, His Grace, Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Chukwuma, has retired from active episcopal service as a shepherd of the church.

Rev Chukwuma’s over three decades of service to humanity in his capacity as a shepherd of the flock came to an end on Sunday, January 14, 2024 during a Valedictory Church Service held at the Cathedral Church of the Good Shepherd, Enugu.

In attendance during the service were prominent Nigerians including the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo; Labour Party Presidential candidate at the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi; Enugu State Governor, Mr Peter Mbah, among others.

Rev Chukwuma has been a bishop since 1990, having served in Bauchi, Gombe and Enugu dioceses. He replaced Bishop Gideon Otubelu as Enugu Bishop in 1998.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo (right) with Deputy Governor, Enugu State, Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai during the Church Service in Enugu on Sunday

The Thanksgiving service served three purposes – First, it marked the 34th Lordship of His Grace, Marked also his 70th Birthday and also served as his farewell service as a bishop to the church.

Obasanjo calls for hope amidst difficult situations

Speaking during the service, former president Obasanjo praised the enomous achievements the retiring Bishop achieved for the church and humanity and called on Nigerians not to lose hope despite difficult challenges in the country.

“Let me say this, you will be retiring but you are not tired. But more importantly for me, because if you do not serve humanity you cannot serve God and part of the work you have to do in the vineyard of God is service for Nigeria.

“So retired you will be but not tired and not out of job. Let me say this, I sought your advice this morning on the issue of security and you gave me a wonderful piece of advice. As they say in my part of the world I put it on my left palm so that I won’t use the right palm and eat it up. There are so many areas that this country will still need your service, I appeal to you never, never shy or relent from rendering such service, he said.

On the state of the nation, Obasanjo who was Nigeria’s President for eight years, 1999 to 2007, said “let us not deceive ourselves, Nigeria is not what it should be. And for you and for me and for many that are here who are your age and above, we should thank God because this is a country where, if you are able to live up to the age of 50, you are lucky. With Boko Haram, with kidnapping, with IPOB, with banditry or whatever they call them, there’s so much that can take your life when you least expected. And now there is poverty raging, I was told that the rate of suicide has increased.

“One of my friends looking after a hospital with mental health said the number of people now coming to the hospital has increased, because they are worried about what they will eat, about security for themselves, for their family and their community.

“Let me say this, in spite of the bad situation we are in, as Christians we should never lose heart and we should never lose hope. To lose hope is to give up and there is no giving up in the vineyard of God. We must persevere, we must persist, we must go on until at first we complete the race and then we wait for the crown when we meet our creator.”

On his part, the Enugu State Governor, Mr Peter Ndubisi Mbah, represented by his Deputy, Mr Ifeanyi Ossai, lauded the tireless efforts of the archbishop in promoting peace, unity and love within and beyond

Archbishop Chukwuma retires after 34 years Episcopalcy and 70 years of age

“As a shepherd and leader, Archbishop Chukwuma’s tireless efforts in promoting peace, unity and love within and beyond the Anglican faithful in Enugu has been evident since his appointment as Bishop of Enugu Diocese.

“Though he bids farewell to active episcopal service, his unwavering commitment to faith and goodwill leaves an indelible mark on the countless people who have encountered him over the years.

“I congratulate Archbishop Chukwuma as he marks 34 years in the episcopacy while wishing him a peaceful retirement,” Governor Mbah said.

In his farewell sermon, Rev Chukwuma lamented that corruption and bad governance has affected the people of the country negatively but called for hope, “But in all there is hope for Nigeria,” he said.

Archbishop Chukwuma’s Biography

His Grace, Archbishop Professor Emmanuel Olisa Chukwuma was born on 15 January, 1954 in Asaba, Delta State.

Charges State Exco on revenue mobilisation, service delivery

Speaker assures of robust oversight

Governor Peter Mbah has signed a N521.5bn Enugu State 2024 Budget into Law, saying it would engender disruptive economic growth, radical infrastructural development, and efficient service delivery.

Mbah, who said that the Enugu State 2024 Appropriation Law, consisting N414.3bn Capital Expenditure, representing 79 per cent of the budget, and N107.2 billion, representing 21 per cent of the budget, would rely heavily on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) charged members of the executive arm of government on robust revenue mobilisation and service delivery.

Speaking during the budget signing, which was witnessed by members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, as well as Commissioners and other top government functionaries at the Government House, Enugu on Wednesday, Mbah thanked Members of the state legislature for their support across party lines.

He said that the expeditious passage of the budget was a product of executive-legislature collaboration during the making of the budget estimates, and listed the multiple gains expected from the 2024 budget.

“What this budget signing means to the people of Enugu is that we are going to be spending over N400bn on capital projects in the next year. This is the first time in the history of the state that we are spending that size of funds on capital projects because we are spending 20 times more than what has been typically our Capital Expenditure outlay in Enugu State.

“We called this the ‘Budget of Disruptive Economic Growth’ based on the size of our Capital Expenditure. It also means that we are going to have large economic activities in Enugu State. You can imagine an economy that is typically used to doing N20bn Capital Expenditure now going to witness over N400bn Capital Expenditure. It is going to be monumental in the ways our people are lifted out of poverty and in the ways economic activities will blossom.

“Most important is that it is going to ensure that we address most of the gaps we have in our social services. In the education sector, the signing of this bill into law means that we are now looking forward to 260 smart schools across the state.

“It also means that we are looking forward to 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres across all our wards in Enugu State. It means that we are going to have radical infrastructural development.

“We are going to build New Enugu City. We are going to have our roads paved. We are going to have feeder roads paved as well as the access roads to our farmlands.

“We talk about scaling up our production in the agriculture sector. Our Special Agro Processing Zones will come to life. The signing into law of this budget today will ensure that we grow our agriculture so that it is not going to be just for food, it is also going to be for export.

“It also means that a new sector will be introduced, the energy and minerals sector, which we hope to use to drive our revenue. It means that our resources in that sector will be harnessed for the benefits of Ndi Enugu”.

On funding of the budget, Governor Mbah said: “We are talking about less than 12 percent of our revenue size that we are going to borrow to execute this budget. That is enormous as we are expecting to mobilize over N300bn from our domestic sources, and that has not happened before.

“What this means is that we are all going to work tirelessly to ensure that these revenues are realised. It also means that for us at the Executive Council, our meetings would largely be on our revenue performance.

The governor further explained that his administration was taking other critical steps, such as the e-governance and automation of government services to ensure efficient service delivery.

“We have gone to an advanced stage on the e-governance initiative. This is going to ensure that our citizens in Enugu are able access government services without the need of actually going to the ministries or to the banks,” he stated.

Governor Mbah, however, appealed to the people of Enugu State to bear with the administration over some inconveniences that the transformation efforts might entail, saying efforts will be made to mitigate the pains occasioned by policies like the expansion of roads.

Recall the Enugu 2024 budget estimates presented by Mbah at the State House of Assembly on December 5, 2023, was passed on December 21, with the Speaker, Hon. Ugwu, assuring a robust oversight function for diligent implementation of the budget.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank our dear governor, Peter Mbah, for giving a lifeline to the economy of this state. On our part, I assure our people that it is not going to be business as usual. We are going to ensure that every fund we have appropriated is put to judicious use,” he said.
