The Head, Department of Mass Communication, ESUT, Associate Professor Chidiebere Ezinwa has charged the students of ESUT Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) to shun examination malpractice and uphold academic integrity.

Prof Ezinwa emphasized the critical need for students to focus on their studies and avoid any form of academic misconduct and urged the new intake to embrace hard work, noting that the JUPEB programme is a rigorous nine-month intensive A-Level course designed to prepare them for Direct Entry into 200 Level.

He made the admonition during the ESUT JUPEB orientation programme for the 2025/2026 students of the institution in Enugu

Prof Ezinwa while detailing causes of Examination malpractice among students and its consequences advised the students to always attend lectures and avoid keeping bad company.

“Causes of examination malpractice by students are many but I will list just a few of them and their consequences. Today’s students engage in examination misconduct because the society places emphasis on paper qualifications instead of knowledge and skills, loss of sense of exam malpractice by parents and teachers, poor time management as some students waist so much time on things that are not relevant to their studies such as phones, gaming, parting. Abuse of phones and over socialization, poor attendance to classes as well as poor preparation for exam. Some students start studying for exams when exam timetable is published. Some start reading for each course a night to the exam. The volume of work will become too much for them within such a short time and they will resort to exam malpractice.

“The consequences of these actions are suspension or immediate expulsion from the university. Let me warn you that at ESUT, examination malpractice is a capital offence punishable by suspension or expulsion. Other consequences are loss of confidence in oneself and lack of courage, poor performance in academic and professional life and Unemployment. Such ill-equipped graduates are not employable. And will remain in the labour market for long. I urge you, therefore to remain focused and maintain academic integrity so you can make your family, and Nigeria proud”, he stated.

Prof Ezinwa while delivering the lecture also shared copies of ESUT examination offences and punishments to the students.

The charge aligned with recent national directives where the Federal Ministry of Education and examination bodies like JAMB have implemented a three-year ban for any candidate found guilty of examination malpractice, enforced via their National Identification Number (NIN).

Speaking at the event, the Director of Admissions, ESUT, Prof. Mike Anyanwuokoro provided clear guidelines for students aiming to transition to full degree programmes through the JUPEB route emphasizing that admission into the regular undergraduate programmes is not automatic. Stressing that candidates must achieve the minimum cut-off points required by their specific departments to qualify for Direct Entry into 200 Level.

The Director stressed the importance of timely fee payments and online registration. He noted that only students listed on the official ICT database would be cleared for the final examinations and subsequent admission processing. He encouraged students targeting competitive fields such as Medicine, Law, and Engineering to maintain high academic performance, as these slots are strictly allocated based on top-tier performance in the 2026 JUPEB national exams

The ESUT JUPEB programme, established in 2016, remains a popular alternative to JAMB, offering a reliable pathway for students to bypass 100-level.

For those still looking to join the current cycle, general JUPEB registration for the 2025/2026 session was recently noted to close around early February 2026. Lectures for the current batch are held at the MSP Mkpokiti facility in Independence Layout, Enugu.

The 2025 Poetry Slam competition was held in Enugu, with participants from across the South East region with foremost Nigerian-American journalist and poet, Chika Oduah reciting some of her poems during the event.

Speaking on the essence of the Day and the competition, the Rector of WABMA , Mr Ken Okere said the competition was part of activities to mark the Global day and to create awareness and encourage younger generations to take to the spoken words.

“Part of the objective of WABMA is to support people, and that’s why we partner with the Enugu Literary Society. March 21 each year is World Poetry Day, declared by the United Nations. And we marked it with two major events in one.

“First, hosted an international journalist, Chika Oduah, a Nigerian-American, who has a background in CNN and several other international media. She was the only international journalist who broke the Boko Haram story by going to Sambisa Forest herself. She produced the first documentary on that issue. She is very famous and happens to be a poet, dancer, and cultural curator who creates stories about cultures.

“She is doing a lot of work and also spending a year in Enugu, and we thought we should bring her in, so young people can see that you can be successful in mass media practice. So, we are going to be featuring her today.

Chika Oduah Reciting some of her poems

“The second part of the event is the Poetry Slam. It’s a performance poetry competition, that’s why it’s called a slam. For those who don’t even like poetry, would enjoy it because it’s not about coming to read some scripted lines. The poet actually performed their work and put more life to it. It’s one of the best ways to introduce people to poetry.

“Many of us were introduced to poetry in a hard way by having to read Shakespearean sonnets and all that. And that turned many people off. But performance poetry takes people back to their origins, which originated from storytelling, folk tale, drama, and draws people back to poetry,” he said.

In his speech, the Head of Department, Mass Communication, ESUT, Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa commended ELS and WABMA for organising the programme stressing that the experience is enriching. He enjoined the students to see the need to take interest in poetry writing as a passion particularly as a tool in reshaping society.

Students and other participants interviewed depressed delight over the programmed adding that it has deepened their passion and disposition to poetry.

The Honourable lawmaker representing Enugu North/South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Chimaobi Sam Atụ has once again offered scholarships to fifty-one indigent but brilliant students in the State.

This is coming just three months after he earlier sponsored 106 students from 24 secondary schools across the constituency in February by paying their WAEC, JAMB examinations and school fees.

In consolidation of the excellent gesture, the lawmaker has now offered additional scholarships to 51 primary school pupils in his constituency for the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination for admission into government unity schools in Nigeria.

The scholarships are pioneered by Honourable Atụ’s foundation, Chimaobi Sam Atu Education Foundation chaired by a foremost university don, Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa of the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT

The chairman of the Chimaobi Sam Atu Education Foundation, Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, disclosed this to newsmen in Enugu on Monday through a press statement he personally signed and sent to newsmen.

He stated that the pupils were selected from both urban and rural schools in the constituency as part of the first phase of unity school registration embarked on by the lawmaker.

He noted that the lawmaker has expressed displeasure with the lack of interest in unity schools among students in his constituency, thus making the current gesture part of his resolve to create awareness on the need for his constituents to start getting admitted into unity schools.

It should be recalled that Hon Atu offered scholarships to over one hundred brilliant secondary school students in his constituency who could not pay their WAEC/NECO fees earlier in the year..

Dr. Ezinwa told ESUT Monitor in an interview that plans are underway to expand the scholarships programmes to over a thousand students.

“The current gesture is part of the lawmaker’s resolve to encourage scholarship in his constituency. It should be recalled that Hon Atu offered scholarships to over one hundred brilliant secondary school students in his constituency who could not pay their WAEC/NECO fees earlier in the year.

“Let me also inform you that plans are also in top gear to offer different scholarships to over one thousand two hundred secondary school pupils and prizes to schools in the constituency through a highly streamlined selection process later in the year,” he said.

In order to hit the ground running in actualizing his targets in this regard, Hon. Atu inaugurated a seven-man education board led by Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa and charged them with the responsibility of awarding SSCE and tertiary institution scholarships, bursaries, and other interventions in public primary and secondary schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency.

The committee fast-tracked the WAEC registration of over 100 students across public secondary schools in the constituency, with a goal of making it 1500, including the best brains from private secondary schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency during the forthcoming WAEC registration for Senior Secondary School students.
