Ebe Ano City – Prof Nicholas Attamah will deliver the 56th Inaugural Lecture of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

The lecture which promises to be devoid of pontification will be based on strict and clinical dissection of compelling variables in the decadent public sector economy of Nigeria.

A Professor of Public Sector Economics and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, ESUT, Prof Attamah will anchor his lecture on the theme “Navigating the Moral Maze: Wealth Creation and Ethical Conduct in a Corrupt Public Sector”

The Lecture will be delivered on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at the Dr Peter Ndunuii Mbah Multi-purpose Auditorium, ESUT Main Campus, Ebe Anọ City Enugu by 11am.

The lecture would be historic as the Dean becomes the first Professor in

the Department of Economics to deliver professorial lecture. Scholastic fireworks will be robustly unleashed.

The 56th Inaugural lecture is coming just a month after Prof Patrick Onuamah delivered the 55th edition on February 26, 2026.

Prof Nicholas Ezeudo Attamah, Professor of Public Sector Economics, a Consummate Scholar with subsisting mantle as the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences And Humanities, is overly poised to blaze the trail as first Inaugural lecturer in academic annals of Department of Economics.

According to Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International, last month, Nigeria ranked 142nd out of 182 countries, scoring 26 out of 100. This indicates high levels of perceived public sector corruption, maintaining a similar score as 2024 despite a slight drop in ranking due to the increased number of countries surveyed.

The CPI, which measures perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), assigned Nigeria a score of 26 — unchanged from 2024. Despite the steady score, the country slipped two places from its previous 140th position, reflecting relative declines as other countries made progress.

Nigeria’s performance remains significantly below the global average score of 42, which itself fell slightly from 43, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50. The ranking also places Nigeria behind 33 other African nations.

Within Africa, Seychelles led the continent with 68 points, followed by Cabo Verde (62), Botswana (58), and Rwanda (58). Other countries that ranked ahead of Nigeria include Mauritius, Namibia, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, and Egypt.

In an effort to encourage Professors to deliver their Inaugural Lectures, the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced an endowment of N1.5 million support to Inaugural Lecturers.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie who dropped the cheering news to the university community on Thursday during the 44th Inaugural Lecture of the university, said the gesture is aimed at motivating the professors to see the need to present their inaugural lecture.

Professor Okolie made the disclosure while presenting his welcome addressing during the 44th Inaugural Lecture delivered by erudite Professor of Communication, Professor Linus Iloegbunam Ogbushi held at the Barr Ndubuisi Mbah Audtitorium. He noted that the gesture comprises N1, 000, 000 donation from the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa, and additional N500, 000 from a member of the Council, Engr. Public presentation of a book authored by the Inaugural Lecturer, Distinguished Prof Ogbuoshi

“Inaugural lecture announces a professor’s arrival within the academics. You can be promoted as a professor but if you retire without doing inaugural lecture, you will be a retiring salary earning professor. But if you have delivered your inaugural lecture, you will now be classified as a Distinguished Professor of that University. Whatever manifest in a professor not doing inaugural lecture manifests in what the person tells the public. If you don’t have anything to tell the public, please don’t present inaugural lecture.

“We are so glad today that we are already moving so fast. Now that we have 44th – 45th and 46th  – are already waiting for the dates to come. Our prayer is that this year we must move beyond 50. ESUT is over 30 years. By the end of the year, we must hit 50 or beyond.

“As a way of encouraging professors to present inaugural lecture, management has been releasing N850, 000 to the inaugural lecturers to aid the production and process. The Chairman of Council in the last Council meeting affirmed that thenceforth he will be giving N1, 000 000 to each inaugural lecturer. As a mark of support to the Chairman, Sir Engr. I.I. Akuve added N500, 000. That means N1.5 million. So going forward, every inaugural lecturer, including the last one and today’s, will receive N1.5 million from the fund. Even if you don’t want to present your inaugural lecture, let this fund attract you to make your presentation,” the VC said.

Highlights of the inaugural lecture were presentation of certificate, award and 50 copies of the Lecture to the Inaugural lecturer, Professor Linus Ogbuoshi, as well as public presentation of a book written by the Lecturer.

In a remarkable inaugural lecture held at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology  (ESUT) on Thursday, Professor Ifeoma Mary Okwo, a distinguished Accounting expert, captivated the audience with her insights on “Management Accounting: The Drive for Sustainable Success in Business.”

Acknowledging Influence:

Professor Okwo commenced her address by expressing gratitude to Vice Chancellor Prof Alloysuis Michaels Okolie, whose encouragement played a pivotal role in her decision to deliver the lecture. She recounted her early exposure to Accounting, attributing it to the influence of her late mother, Mrs. Regina Oketa, a trader. Her journey into the realm of Accounting was shaped by the necessity to manage sales and accounts after the loss of her father, Mr. Joseph Oketa.

Academic Journey:

Having graduated as an esutite in 1988 and later earning her Master’s Degree at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Okwo joined UNN in 1998 as an assistant lecturer. Over the years, she climbed the academic ladder, achieving the status of a full-time lecturer in 2012, a position she holds with distinction.

Purpose of Inaugural Lectures:

Inaugural lectures serve as a platform for professors to showcase  their resources and achievements within the university community. Professor Okwo’s lecture delved into the critical principles and concepts of accounting, emphasizing the imperative nature of sustainability in today’s business landscape.

Business Failures Unveiled:

Highlighting the reasons for business failures, Professor Okwo underscored the importance of marketing techniques and awareness in business management. She emphasized that accounting extends beyond financial reporting, playing a crucial role in decision-making. Theories in marketing and management formed the pillars of her discussion.

ESUT VC, Prof Alloysuis Michaels Okolie (Middle) flanked by other staff members in a group photo after the lecture

Pillars of Sustainability:

Addressing the triad of sustainability, Professor Okwo identified three pillars – people (the social goal), profit (the economic goal), and planet (the environmental goal). She stressed that these factors must coexist for true sustainability.

Levels of Management:

Breaking down accounting and management, Professor Okwo outlined three levels – strategic, tactical, and operational. Using the “SWEAT” planning technique, she elaborated on the internal factors influencing businesses – Strengths and Weaknesses.

Performance Metrics:

Performance measurement, she argued, extends beyond mere economic indicators and includes financial, economic, customer relations, and innovation and learning metrics.

Tactical Planning:

In the tactical realm, Professor Okwo discussed planning for profitability, emphasizing the importance of controlling costs and increasing revenue.

Standards and Control:

Touching on standards, she introduced two types – ideal and attainable. Control, she explained, is the process of managing the business, ensuring that plans translate into action.

Elements of Cost:

The lecture concluded with a focus on the elements of cost, including fixed, mixed, variable, and prime costs.

Call to Action:

Professor Okwo left the audience with a call to pay attention to sustainability concerns, highlighting the interconnectedness of social, environmental, and economic aspects in a business’s success. Her lecture was a testament to the multifaceted nature of modern accounting and the pivotal role it plays in steering businesses towards sustainable growth.

A professor of Accounting at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Ifeoma Okwo, has said that adequate application of Management Accounting techniques, would guarantee sustainable success in businesses.

Professor Okwo made the disclosure while delivering the 32nd inaugural lecture of ESUT titled “Management Accounting Techniques: The Drive for Sustainable Success in Business,” at the capacity-filled Professor Julius Onah Auditorium, Agbani, Enugu State on Thursday.

The Accounting guru explained that Management Accounting is “a special branch of accounting that involves all accounting procedures targeted to improve the quality of information for effective management of businesses.”

Professor Okwo, who said that the major challenge confronting corporate leadership and managers at all levels is how to obtain relevant data and harness necessary information for effective decision making, added that the quality of decisions made by corporate managers determine the advancement, prosperity and sustainability or otherwise of their organisations.

The Accounting Professor who said that her inaugural lecture was inspired by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, noted further that Management Accounting is hinged on revenue maximization, cost minimization and resource optimization.

She added that a sustainable management accounting technique that would focus on the three pillars of economic, social and environmental sustainability is recommended for organisations in order to scale through tight regulations of governments and their agencies.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, urged all the professors in the University, especially, those who were yet to present their inaugural lectures to become professing professors by providing academic leadership.

Prof. Okolie emphasized that inaugural lecture was about sharing academic research journey of an individual leading to his professorship. “Inaugural lecture is more about sharing ones research journey into becoming a professor. You will be telling us more or less, what you confronted when you were growing up in scholarship and how you were able to tackle them, including the results and expectations, but not conclusively, because any idea you have today must be subjected to further verification,” he said.

While saluting the courage and the dedication of the inaugural lecturer, Prof. Okwo, he enjoined the academia to use their positions to make positive impacts for the wellbeing of humanity. He also saluted the efforts of the Inaugural Lectures
