The University of Ilorin, Kwara State, has expressed support and encouragement to the Joint Admission and matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede following the national ignominy caused by the technical glitch the exam body suffered during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which led to the cancellation of results in Lagos and the entire South East States.

University of Ilorin through a statement signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Wahab Egbewole, commended Prof Oloyede for the manner he handled it and described him as a good ambassador of the university.

In a letter dated issued on Thursday and addressed to JAMB Headquaters with the caption “JAMB 2025 UTME RESULTS” the VC noted that as a university, they would wish to put on record the fact that the Board approached the issues that arose on the result with truthfulness and nothing was hidden from the public.

“We hereby write to appreciate you on how the developments on the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination was handled by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board under your leadership.

“As a University, we want to put on record the fact that the Board approached the issues that arose on the result with truthfulness and nothing was hidden from the public. This approach demonstrated courage, honesty of purpose, integrity, strength of character, and on the whole a call to the younger generation to emulate these positive values.

“The admission of the error committed by one of the service providers culminating in the result that affected more than 300,000 candidates could have been laid at the doorstep of the service provider but you took full responsibility. This is an uncommon phenomenon in Nigeria.

“We pray that God will continue to lead you and grant you the grace to be of more invaluable service to our country.

“Well done sir and we are indeed very proud of you as our distinguished Alumnus and worthy Ambassador. Please be assured of our esteemed regards,” the letter read

Speaking during a press conference, the JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, expressed deep regret over what he described as a disappointing setback in the exercise that had, until the glitch, been considered one of the most successful in recent years.

“So, I appeal to the candidates and those affected by the error of our system to accept this explanation as the truth of the matter without embellishment, please. I apologise and take full responsibility, not just in words,” he said.

Oloyede said the issue affected 157 examination centres across Lagos and the South-East.

He said the glitch affected 206,610 candidates across 65 centres in Lagos State and 173,387 candidates in 92 centres across South East states.

While 54.37 per cent of candidates affected are in Lagos, the remaining 45.63 per cent are spread across Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu States.

Oloyede explained that the glitch was caused by a failed patch meant to update examination servers in the region.

He assured that the affected candidates would retake the examination between May 16 and May 18, 2025.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Friday announced the release of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results, with results of 39,834 candidates being withheld.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Friday during the official release of the 2025 UTME results at JAMB headquarters, Bwari.

Oloyede revealed that the seizure of results was due to suspected examination malpractices, and about 80 individuals are being probed for exam-related offences, with Anambra State having the highest number of suspects.

He said JAMB has 39,834 unreleased UTME results, with 1,426 under scrutiny and processing. Out of these, 96 candidates’ results were withheld due to exam malpractices, a decrease from 123 in the previous year.

Oloyede said 2,157 candidates experienced fingerprint rejections due to suspected registration infractions, and the figure is far above margin, and currently under investigation.

He added that a total of 1,957,000 candidates were verified for the exam, with 71,705 candidates absent.

Oloyede said,”The new trends observed this year were in the Registration and Examination processes, and they were mainly in the following categories; Identity Fraud, and Biometric Fraud of Combined Thumbprint of Candidate.

“Other infractions were impersonator at the point of registration with the active involvement of few CBT Centres, double registration, and attempted substitution of self by candidates.”

He stated that 244 candidates were caught in “WhatsApp runs” and had their results withheld as a deterrent.

The registrar also cited that some CBT centers colluded with syndicates to register candidates with multiple fingerprints, affecting 3,656 candidates whose results were withheld due to “extraneous fingerprints” and every implicated centers will face sanctions.

He identified the centres as Tigh Technologies Limited, Sascon International School, Maitama, Abuja, and Wudil Computer Information Technology. Wudil, Kano State and Penta M &Amp; Centre 2, Tambuwal LGA, Sokoto, Sokoto State.

Oloyede added that 80 suspects were being interrogated by the police for their involvement in the examination malpractices, and most of them would be prosecuted.

The registrar reported 41,027 underage candidates registered, with 467 meeting high-performance criteria and one disqualified for malpractice.

He confirmed the board supported 501 candidates with disabilities through JAMB Equal Opportunity Group, but unfortunately, one of these candidates was involved in impersonation.

Oloyede also said Four CBT centers were delisted and blacklisted due to technical deficiencies and substandard performance.

He listed the centres as: Adventure Associate, Behind Sheshe Supermarket, Kano, Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Zaria.

Others are Soronara Ventures Nigeria Limited, Foundation Road, Umudagu Mbieri, Mbaitoli, Imo State, and HSS Amazing, Holy Saviour School 30/32, Old Ota Road, Adeleye, Aparadija, Isunba, Lafenwa, Itele, Ogun State.

He therefore said that a list of those blacklisted for fraudulent practices would soon be made public with details of their nefarious activities.

Despite the controversy surrounding the 2025 JAMB results, Oloyede concluded that it was the one of the most successful in recent times

The JAMB boss reaffirmed the board’s zero-tolerance policy on exam malpractice and promised to continue innovating to maintain exam credibility.

He also explained how to check UTME results: candidates should text ‘UTMERESULT’ to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used for registration, with result printing available later.

Nigeria’s apex Universities regulatory body, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities in the country to cease offering admissions to underaged candidates.

The Registrar, JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who gave the warning on Tuesday said that the illegal admission necessitate ‘regularisation’ after admission has been offered.

Prof Oloyede handed the warning in Lagos on Tuesday at the opening of the seventh biennial conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria.

JAMB regularisation is a process overseen by JAMB in Nigeria to validate and formalise the admission of students who were admitted into tertiary institutions without proper documentation or through informal means.

He lamented that the issue of regularisation had denied most candidates the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Service Corps.

Themed “Effective University Governance: Role of Stakeholders” JAMB boss said that for the sake of accountability, data protection and integrity of the nation, this act needed to stop, adding that anything irregular was illegal.

“I want to discuss what I call illegal admission. Many Vice-Chancellors don’t like the word, the truth is that no need to regularise what is regular.

“Calling for regularisation after admission is illegal. Some candidates can’t go for NYSC because they were not properly admitted,” he said.

He also complained that admission of underaged and diploma candidates was also illegal admissions.

He said, “About two months ago, I received a letter from a European country to confirm if a student graduated from a particular university because she is 15 years old and applied for a postgraduate programme. The question they asked me was ‘Is this possible in Nigeria?’

“Also illegal admission of diploma students needs to stop because last year, we admitted 9,000 diploma students; I was alarmed that about 3,000 students came from a particular university.

“Every one of us should be accountable because all these acts can damage our education system.”

Members of the panel include the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; the Minister of Youths, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar among others.

“Without prejudice to the periodic accreditation exercise of the NUC, examine whether or not private universities established in the last 15 years have in the place prescribed facilities, appropriate management structure, adequate funding of programmes, requisite staff (nature of staff-full time, contract, adjunct, visiting, other types),” the term of reference read.
