Agbani – As the 2024/2025 first semester examinations begin in ESUT on Monday, March 3rd, the Mass Communication Department has acquired four digital cameras for effective supervision of the conduct of the examinations.

A Lecturer in the department, Mr, Sebastine Okafor who displayed the digital cameras to Year 2 students during his revision class on Friday, said the four cameras will be positioned in each of the four halls designated for the exams.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Okafor arrived into the classroom with a bag containing digital gadgets, displaying them to the Year 2 students, in the presence of Mr. Joel Asogwa, the examination officer for the department.

He explained that the cameras are intended to monitor students during exams and promote a fair and regulated examination process.

“The quality of these cameras allows for cloud saving. Mass Communication Department has been setting standards on Examination conducts, that standard must be maintained,” Mr. Okafor stressed.

He demonstrated the camera’s capabilities and ability to capture the entire classroom and stream live footages into his phone, leaving the students in awe.

In addition to the digital cameras, Mr. Okafor shared tips regarding academic disciplinary actions taken against students in other departments. Six students from the Sociology Department and two from the Psychology Department, both under the Faculty of Social Sciences, were reportedly expelled.

On his part, Mr Joel Asogwa charged the students to study hard and avoid cutting corners as the department under Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa’s leadership will continue to promote academic excellence.

“The University frowns at examination malpractices and there are consequences for such actions. In Mass Comm., we have zero regard for malpractices and I implore you to take your studies very seriously. These cameras have made our work easier. We

Mass Communication Department, it would be recalled, uses three different classrooms for each examinations which ensures proper spacing and at the same time minimise cheating.

As the department prepares for examination, the notable step taken by Mr. Sebastine Okafor, to integrate digital monitoring tools reflects a commitment to academic integrity and a forward-thinking approach to education.

The Head of Mass Communication Department, ESUT, Barr. Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, has pledged to incorporate experiential learning into the department’s curricula which uphold Governor Peter Mbah’s new policy with emphasize in experiential learning in the state.

Dr. Ezinwa revealed this during the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival (ENIFF) three-day Film Production training for the students of the department in Enugu

During an interview with the ESUT Monitor, the HOD noted that, “This event is an eye-opener, which incites what happens in the film industries. I am sure that those students who paid proper attention to the Programme will benefit greatly.”

He stated that what they film training is in line with what the Governor of Enugu State, Barr Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has instructed – “experiential learning, people learning things practically, not just reciting theories and concepts, but actually doing things with practical knowledge,” he emphasized.

The programme organizers are using films to bring about social change in different sectors. For example, the issue of gender-based violence has become rampant in society. However, the film training aims to enlighten students on how to use documentaries and films to change some situations in society.

“I am really happy we are doing something that aligns with the dream of His Excellency, which our VC, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has also inculcated in the staff.

“I have succeeded in using one stone to kill two birds; we are talking about unbundling the department. We have an interest in including Film and Multi-Media Studies as one of the departments. With this contact, we have gained now; we will try to see how we can collaborate with people already in the film industries.

Mass Communication Students, do e staff and organisers of 2nd edition of ENIFF Film Training on Thursday

The organizers promised to support the department in training the students who have interest in film-making.

One of the students, Edennaji Ezinne, from the Mass Communication Department, 200 level, expressed gratitude and happiness to the HOD for giving them the privilege to be in the programme.

She stated that the event is a “mind-blowing and impactful one because it is here to teach people who do not have the knowledge or who want to know more about storytelling and film production. I am happy and honored to be here,” she said.

While the ENIFF Film Production training ends today in Enugu with many students from the department attending from Thursday, it is important to emphasize that Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa ‘s leadership of the department has reinvigorated and repositioned it to be the pacesetter among others.

Dr Ezinwa has consistently exposed the students to practical aspects of journalism including visiting AfiaTV where a collaboration between the department and the company was reached; ensuring their participation in the second edition of the ENIFF training where the students are tutored on how to use their smartphones to creat and make movies and tell stories; reviving the ESUT Monitor Newspaper and also playing integral role in the restoration of ESUT Radio, 106.5FM, among others.

It could be recalled, that His Excellency, Barr Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah while delivering the first ESUT’s Distinguished Personality Lecture on Tuesday, 19th November, charged tertiary institutions in Enugu State to Implement Experiential Learning in their academic curricula as the bedrock for equipping the students with requisite knowledge to become productive before and after their gratulation.

Enugu – Baring change in plans, the long awaited return to air transmission of the ESUT Radio, is here. This is because the 106.5 FM radio station which has been off air for some years will be back on air ahead of the 20th Convocation Ceremony of ESUT next week Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie in a press conference on Thursday revealed his intention to formally reopen ESUT Radio on Tuesday 19th of November 2024, and still retain its initial frequency number.

At the press conference held at the Prof Julius Onah Auditorium as part of activities to mark the 20th convocation and degree awarding ceremony, the VC stated that necessary actions have been taken to ensure the return to air of the radio station.

He noted that challenges relating to the management of the radio station has been sorted out adding that the station would be a training platform for Mass Communication students.

“On the issue of ESUT radio, the good news is that the station will be back on air next week. The facilities have been provided and those who are not yet there, the cheque would be signed shortly after this briefing so that the Engineer can fix them. We want the station on air before Convocation day.

“We have agreed on who is going to man it and it would be a training medium for Mass Communication students. They will be in charge of the programming and we want to see our convocation reports on the station,” the VC said.

It could be recalled that the ESUT 106.5 FM has been off air following fire incident that engulfed the station at its former office at Independence Layout in Enugu before the department was moved to its current location at Agbani main Campus of the university.

…Emerges Sole Candidate For Vice Chairmanship Position

By Amaechi Agbo

In a twist of events ahead of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ESUT Branch bye election slated to hold today, Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Dr Andrew Apeh has resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the branch.

Dr Apeh of Mass Communication Department in a lengthy letter made available to ESUT Monitor, said his resignation is anchored on the need for him to pursue a higher position.

He noted that after careful consultations with family members and stakeholders, he has taken the decision to relinquish his Assistant Secretary position and aspire for the vacant Vice-chairman role.

“It is with a profound sense of duty and respect that I write to inform the esteemed members of the ASUU-ESUTof my decision to formally resign from my position as the Assistant Secretary of the Branch.

“After careful consideration and extensive consultations with my family and colleagues, I have come to the realization that there is a higher calling that aligns with my aspirations within the union.

“The vacancy in the position of Vice Chairmanship has presented itself as an opportunity for me to serve in a capacity that resonates with my ambitions and interests.

“I have realized that the initial misconception regarding the eligibility criteria for contesting the Vice Chairmanship position was based on a misinterpretation of the ASUU bye-laws. Contrary to my earlier understanding, one does not necessarily need to have served as an executive member first to vie for the Vice Chairmanship role. This clarification has encouraged me to step down from my current role as Assistant Secretary and pursue the Vice Chairmanship position.

“I wish to express my deepest gratitude to all members of ASUU-ESUT for the overwhelming support and trust you have bestowed upon me during the recent election. Your unwavering backing has been a source of strength and inspiration for me, and I humbly implore your continued understanding in my decision to run for the Vice Chairmanship post.”

It could be recalled that Dr Andrew Apeh polled a total of 103 votes to better Dr Peter Okonkwo who got 59 votes in the election conducted on August 29, 2024.

Interestingly, Dr Apeh will be contesting the ASUU-ESUT Vice Chairmanship position as a sole candidate after several Professors who had indicated interest withdrew from the race.

The ASUU-ESUT will today conduct bye elections to fill the vacant positions of Vice Chairman and Treasurer in the branch

… Warns Final Students Against Excessive Celebrate After Their Final Exams

By Amaechi Agbo, Agbani

The Management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) has given a pat on the back of the board of Mass Communication Department for the conduct of the ongoing 2nd semester examinations in the university.

The management gave the commendation through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chike Nwoha who led a team of the management to inspect on-going examinations in the institution.

Prof Nwoha in company of the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Charles Chime, among others, stormed the Mass Communication Department on Tuesday the first day of the examination at 10:15am.

The DVC who lauded how the students comported themselves and the seating arrangement, said Mass Communication Department is setting the pace for other departments to emulate.

“We came here on inspection, to monitor and observe how the examination is being conducted here. We go to departments unannounced and obersve. I can tell you that I am very much impressed with the conduct of the exam in Mass Communication Department.

“The Students are well-spaced and there are two or three invigilators in the halls. Mass Communication is using three classrooms for one examination, that is excellence. They are setting the pace for others to follow,” Prof Nwoha said while providing answer to why they visited the department.

Earlier in the classroom, the DVC warned final year students not to over celebrate their final exam and cautioned them against handing on vehicles to make merry, stressing that the university doesn’t want to lose any student.

“Your final exam is on August 8 and I know all of you would want to celebrate. Yes, we are not against celebration but we, as your parents here, need to advise you, do not celebrate excessively. When you finish your exams on that day, rejoice with your mates, hug yourselves but go home and celebrate

“We don’t want to see anybody hanging on vehicles just because you are celebrating. We don’t want to lose any of you. When you finish you exams, go home and celebrate with your people. We want you to go for youth service immediately and thereafter come back for your Masters or find a good job. We want you to succeed,” he told the final students.

The 2023/2024 2nd semester examinations in ESUT started in Tuesday, July 23 across all faculties and departments.

A professor in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Sunny Udeze has enjoined students of the university to imbibe the virtues of ethical principles and probity as they aspire to achieve their academic dreams and become successful in life.

Prof Udeze gave the advice while delivering a lecture to the first year students of Mass Communication Department, in the university on Thursday.

Professor Udeze who is a former secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ESUT Branch, as well as the current Director, General Studies in ESUT, said while analysing the topic “Ethics and Successful Studentship”, that apart from corporate organisations and professional bodies who have their ethical codes, it is important that every student should abide by the ethics of their family as well as that of the school.

He noted that ethical principles invariably promotes probity which helps the students to succeed in their academic endeavour and post school career.

”Every organisation has its ethical codes. Even, each family has its ethical codes, those behavioral attitude your parents inculcated in you as well as the ones they made you to jettison, are your family ethical code. Similarly, the university (ESUT) has its ethical codes. These are the rules that guide the conducts of the both staff and the students in the university.

Professor Obiageli Okafor delivering her lecture on Thursday

“When you obersve and imbibe these ethical principles, it will enable you to live a life of honesty and probity and you will be successful in life. However, you must work hard, hardwork pays and has no substitution,” he advised.

Delivering her lecture on the topic “Course Registration, Lecture Attendance and Examination in ESUT,” Professor Obiageli Okafor implored the students on the need to ensure that they registered their courses online as and when due and attend lectures punctually.

The first female Head of Department in the department emphasized that online course registration is cardinal in the university adding that the registration, apart from payment of tuition fees, affirms student’s membership of the university.

She stressed that students who absentee themselves from lectures only to appear on examination days will have themselves to blame.

“This is a university where you are expected to be law abiding and carry out your responsibilities and obligations to the university diligently. Your online course registration is very important because it affirms your membership of the university, after payment of your prescribed fees.

“Many students don’t come to lectures but when it is examination time, you see them everywhere. I want to remind you that the 70% attendance rule which makes you eligible to sit for examination is applicable in Mass Communication Department and everywhere in the university.

“So, it is important that you take your academic programmes seriously. If there is any reason you should not attend a lecture, it is important you reach out to the lecturer in charge and register your permission, however, this should not be a habit,” Prof Okafor admonished.

The 2024 orientation programme for first year students of Mass Communication Department was held on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

In a ticking hour

The treasurable story began

How thou existed

Like a rising mountain, it moved

Its nature unbeatable

Along the ocean of its existence

It came never to go

How powerful and might it is

Its worth powerful like blowing winds

The beauty of the Earth it explained

The origin of star and moon it appreciate by the source that create it

Living a fullest life beyond limits

The greatest treasure of power it gives

Power of the universe

The greatest position you acquire

Respect of the mortal and immortal you control

Popularity beyond human race

The nature of its existence is not limited

What it offers is unlimited

In the ocean wave of knowledge you swim

Lack of its origin cripples one

Unlimited wealth you control

With the knowledge of Education

In the board of business without Education is limited

Power, wealth and fame it offers

With knowledge of education you can only not stop nature

In your hands it is controlled

The four walls of university brighten the future

Existence of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) trains better

It is school like home

Not us pass through book

With Almighty Education you learn your worth and value of which one live

Education is the best gift of the world, with knowledge and wisdom

We experience life free from poverty and stress

A veteran filmmaker, Chris Obi Rapu has called for the renaming of the Nigeria Movie industry Nollywood to “Naija Cinema” to reflect local identity

Mr Rapu who directed Nigeria’s first indigenous movie, “Living in Bondage” in 1992, made the call while delivering a key note speech in a panel discussion at the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival (ENIFF), in Enugu on Thursday

The Veteran Director made a proposal to change the name of the film Industry from Nollywood to Naija Cinema, arguing that the name ‘Nollywood’ was not contrived by indigenous film makers.

“The professionals here should carry this message that we want to be known as Naija Cinema. Somebody could say why cinema? Cinema encompasses all, it is the act of making films, either using the medium of celluloid or video, the home where they show some of it is called cinema because it’s the theater. So cinema is the right word”. Chris argued.

He also noted that giving Nollywood a new name will retire all other ‘woods’ in Nigeria and give birth to a proper National Cinema which will be officially known as ‘Naija Cinema’.

However, Jahman Anikulapo, a renowned journalist, Cultural Archivist and a staunch member of the Nigerian creative industry note that Mr Rapu that his proposal will definitely be looked into stressing that it cannot be overlooked considering that it comes from a father who has been around since the inception of Nollywood.

The ongoing 2023 ENIFF Festival which climaxes on Saturday has students from different Universities in Enugu attending including over 45 students from the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT
