The Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has Consoled the family of late music icon, Mike Ejeagha over the death of the 95 years legendary musician on Friday.

Mike Ejeagha, a renowned traditional forklore musician, died on Friday in Enugu after a prolonged illness at the age of 95

Governor Mbah in his condolence message on Saturday expressed sadness over the nonagenarian’s demise and described late Ejeagha as a “cultural ambassador” and one of the “finest musicians of his generation” adding that his passing is a profound loss to humanity.

The Governor noted that he would forever cherish the warm moment he shared with the legend stressing that his death has left a vacuum difficult to fill

“I’m profoundly saddened by the death of the music icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.

“Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State. He was one of the finest musicians of his generation, with an easygoing personality and a humility that belied his towering celebrity status. His fan-base transcended boundaries, and he was easily one of the most recognizable voices in music.

“Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures.

“I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company – the warmth and wisdom he radiated; the joy he found in the ordinary.

“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill. But the legacies he has left behind will last a lifetime. This is a loss not only for his immediate family; it is a profound loss for Enugu State, the entire music community, and the nation as a whole.

“On behalf of the Enugu State Government, I offer heartfelt condolences to the Ejeagha family and assure them of our support. As a government, we will ensure that his memory is duly immortalized. Above all, I pray that his family experiences the comforting grace of God’s love, and the fortitude to bear the loss.

“Rest in peace, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha,” the Governor said on his Facebook Page

Renowned Highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, known for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating music, has passed away at the age of 95.

Ejeagha died on Friday night at about 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.

His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the sad news in a telephone conversation with Vanguard

Mike Ejeagha was a dominant voice on Nigerian airwaves in the 1980s with his unique style of Igbo folk music that resonated across generations.

He was born in Imezi Owa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He grew up in Coal Camp in a family headed by his civil servant father, then worked with the Ministry of Health of Enugu.

Mike Ejeagha was celebrated for his mastery in transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating musical narratives that educated and entertained generations. His unique style of storytelling through music dominated Nigerian airwaves in the 1980s and earned him a revered place in the country’s cultural history.

One of his most iconic tracks, “Gwogwogwo,” gained renewed attention last year after popular stand-up comedian and skitmaker Brian Potter remixed the song, introducing it to a younger audience and sparking a resurgence of interest in Ejeagha’s work.

With a career spanning several decades, Ejeagha’s contributions to the preservation and promotion of Igbo language and culture through highlife music remain unmatched.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country, as fans, cultural institutions, and fellow musicians remember his profound impact on traditional music and his legacy as a custodian of oral tradition.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

The Enugu State Government has inaugurated four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike, including the newly renamed Mike Ejeagha Road, formerly known as Obinagu Road.

The road, which leads to the residence of the legendary musician, was rebuilt earlier in the year in recognition of his contributions to the state’s cultural heritage.

This was made known in a statement shared on Facebook by the state governor, Peter Mbah, on Monday.

Gov Mbah paid a Courtesy visit to the 92 years old living legend

The statement said, “It was a pleasure to visit our living legend, Mike Ejeagha, and to commission four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike.

“In recognition of Mike Ejeagha’s immense contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu State, we have renamed Obinagu Road, leading to his residence and reconstructed earlier in the year, to Mike Ejeagha Road.

“Enugu is a state rich in history, talent, and culture. It is our duty to honour and celebrate those who have shaped our identity. Today, our government extends full support to Mike Ejeagha, taking responsibility for his upkeep as part of our commitment to preserving the legacies of our indigenous legends.

“To the residents of Abakpa and Enugu State, we assure you that this is just the beginning. We have recently awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads and 20 rural roads, and Abakpa is certainly included.
