Agbani – The Dean, Student Affairs, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Ifeoma Okwo has extolled the great impact ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) is making as the university’s information bearer.

Prof Okwo stated this when the Editorial Team of EMN paid her a courtesy visit in her office on Wednesday.

Expressing her delight on the work the newspaper is doing, Prof Okwo said that each day in the morning she reads ESUT Monitor Newspaper to get information about the latest development in the citadel.

Delighted over the visit, Prof Okwo who said that the Student Affairs will collaborate with EMN, noted that the paper has not only become the watchdog of the university, but a reference base for both staff and students.

“Each day, before I leave my house, I will make sure that I read ESUT Monitor because the stories are always posted early. The information I get brighten my day because you get the perspective of latest happenings in Esut. I urge you to keep it up,” she said.

Responding to a question on management’s new directive that students must pay their school fees before paying for their accommodation which the students complained that the information came late and is causing them discomfort, Prof Okwo said the directive is in the interest of the students.

While she acknowledged the students’ complaints, she also appealed to them to show appreciation to the university management, who, despite having all the indices for upward review of the school fees decided not to.

Earlier, the Staff Adviser of ESUT Monitor Newspaper, Mr Amaechi Agbo, told the Dean that the Editorial Team of the newspaper was in her office to officially introduce the newspaper to her, congratulate her on her new appoint and seek areas of collaboration.

In its effort to encourage students to take news reportage and coverage serious, the Editorial Board of ESUT Monitor Newspaper has doled out ₦8 000 to four year one students for writing publishable stories.

In handing over the rewards to the four best students on Monday at the year one classroom of Mass Communication Department, Mr. Amaechi Agbo, ESUT Monitor Staff Adviser also gave seven students free copies of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper for their efforts.

Mr Agbo noted that he was encouraged by the level of commitment shown by the students in writing the stories.

The class was held on July 22nd, 2024, for the Thirty-three (33) first-year students who attempted the assignment given by Mr. Agbo, which involved writing news reports about the orientation programme they witnessed on July 11, 2024.

During the class, their news reports were reviewed with remarks and corrections.

Four students- Ani Ruth, Agu Oyekachukwu, Lawrence Joy and Ali Hope Onyinyechi – had their news reports intrigue the Staff Advuser and were rewarded with ₦2000 each for reporting publishable news stories.

Seven other students who performed well were given a free copy of the ESUT Monitor’s second edition newspaper each. The rest were encouraged and taught how to improve their news stories.

“The rewards given to the students were from the ESUT Monitor newspaper,” said Mr. Agbo adding that the board after reviewing the 33 stories was happy that the students, despite their shirt period in the department, are keying into the ESUT Monitor Newspaper. He also encouraged the students to keep up the good work and promised that the Editorial Board will train them next semester to become good journalists.

It could be recalled that the Department of Mass Communication held it’s orientation for year one students on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
