More commendations have continued to pour in following the relaunch of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper with the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Enugu State, Dr. Felix Nnamani promising that he would continue to identify with the paper.

Hon. Nnamani who described the paper as a “quality production” said the “sky will be your stepping stone” in his appraisal of the paper when the editorial team paid him a visit in his office, recently. He charged the department to sustain the paper.

“You guys are in the pipeline, with the kind of quality production you’ve done in the campus. If you have the backup and resources that is required, the sky will be your stepping stone.

All I can say is for you to keep it up, I’m impressed with this (holding the newspaper). I’ll continue to identify with this. Mass Communication is one of the pioneer departments in ESUT. The University was structured after Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. It was going to be totally University of Technology. Mass Communication was one of the social sciences that got a space afterwards. That’s why you have quality journalists both in the print and broadcast media. Congratulations to you and to the Mass Communication Department of our University,” he said.

He commended the great works put into the department by various individuals who had previously management the department.

“Your current HoD is doing a great work reviving the paper. I will also not forget great men in your department like Professors Chris Ngwu, Ifeanyi Didiugwu, Ike Ndolo, Sunny Udeze and so many others that are very active and sound.”

Since the return of the paper in the newsstands nearly two months ago, it has continued to receive encomiums from both the Enugu State Government, ESUT Management, Professors as well as individuals who have expressed delight for the revival.

The ESUT Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu described the newspaper as “the watchdog of the university”

The Newspaper which served the university community previously but went out of circulation in 2015 was relaunched on November 16, 2023 following the appointment of Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa as the new Head of Mass Communication Department, ESUT in September.

The office of the Registrar, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT was a beehive of activities on Thursday, December 21 as members of the staff “invaded” the office to collect their bags of rice, courtesy of the University scribe, Mr Ambrose Ugwu.

A visitor would have mistaken the Registrar’s office for a warehouse or palliative storage facility as bags of rice littered the office and staff trooping in and out dragging bags of rice along with them as they made their way out of the office in joyous mood.

Seated placidly on his desk is the Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu seemingly oblivious of the activities going on inside his office.

Interestingly, the news of the Christmas gift fettered into the other departments and staff came in their numbers to also collect their own gifts from “our daddy” as they referred to the Registrar.

Mr Ugwu in an interview with ESUT monitor shortly after the distribution of the bags of rice to the staff, explained why he embarked on such humanitarian gesture.

ESUT Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu

“I have a way of thanking God because He has been very supportive to our administration and to me in particular. So I said those staff working under me, let them receive the dividends of their efforts. It is a happy Christmas gift, no matter how little. I can’t reach everybody but at least those who sustained the work till today, the 21st of December, that is why I don’t want any person that is not here to receive it. If you are not here, you are not part of it. And those who are here today that we have to close for the year, I have to appreciate them.

“It is a Christmas gift to them. Formerly we used to send Christmas cards but those things are no longer in vogue, we now commit it to cash or materials. That is why I made provisions for small gifts. I have bags of rice, bedsheet. Some may still get tokens in terms of cash,” he said.

Mr Ugwu noted further that he distributed 200 5kg bags of rice to all the staff members who are working under the Registry Office.

“I made provisions for 200 5kg bags of rice and I have exhausted them. My staff members are many because the departments and units under the Registry Office include the Central Registry, Establishment, Students Affairs, Records, Exams, Council Unit, General Administration and Senate Unit. All these departments fall under the purvey of the Registry. But I extended it to other units within the Administrative Block. Except the Bursary, I will think about that because I didn’t make provisions for them.”

ESUT formally closed for Christmas and New Year festivities on Thursday December 21 and will resume on January 8th, 2024

Management of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has described the ESUT Monitor Newspaper as the “Watchdog of the university.”

The Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu stated this in a chat with the editorial team of the newspaper in his office. The University scribe who expressed delight over the rebirth of the newspaper said he was happy when he first saw the newspaper before the 19th Convocation ceremony held last month.

“I am very happy that this ESUT Monitor is back. The only way you can disseminate information is putting them down in writing. When I saw this paper earlier (during the Alumni Symposium), I was thinking that it’s somebody from Government House who used to come and share papers anytime we have function. I had to touch the Bursar and say ‘are you sure these people have not come to disrupt our event? Later on, I went through it, I saw pages, convocation messages, felicitations and then the activities of this current management. I said wow! This is complementing the ESUT Courier, and it’s very encouraging and very good.”

He however made an appeal for the cost of the paper to be reviewed considering that majority of the people to buy the paper is the students. He further advised that the management of the Newspaper should create stands at strategic places in the university and within the neighbouring communities where people can pick up the paper to get information about ESUT.

The Registrar, ESUT, Mr Ambrose George Ugwu, Middle – flanked by the ESUT Monitor Sports Editor, Timothy Nwobodo (left) and Staff Adviser, Amaechi Agbo during the official presentation of the new edition of the newspaper to the University’s Scribe in his office on Friday

“The only thing I have to say is that I have seen the cover price, 500 Naira. It’s not that it’s not affordable, but you know the greater percentage of the people that will need this newspaper are the students. If there’s any way the price can be reduced so that many of them can buy it, that will be fine.

“Then you need to have a stand, where people can go and look at the latest information happening in the University. Again, you’ll have an interface with the PR Unit so that if there’s an event, some of your students who are on IT or who are not supposed to be in class, can go and cover it. I am very happy that this thing is back and I pray that it doesn’t go into extinction again.”

He expressed the management’s readiness to support the newspaper when called upon and charged the paper to criticize the management where it is failing

“If there’s any way that the management can assist, feel free to approach the management let us have a dialogue, and whenever we want to pay courtesy visit to any organisation, we can pick some copies. You people are now our watchdog, it is not the one the University is producing, which is actually the University management news. “Create columns where students will say things as it is, so that we can now feel the pulse of those we are leading. There are so many students who cannot vocally express themselves to say we’re being harassed or extorted. Create a forum where these things will be said, let it be anonymous. We’ll go through some of these things and synthesize it. That is why this administration is succeeding.”

The management, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has warned the staff of the university that staff members who failed to be regularised are not under the employ of the institution.

The Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu issued the warning in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office on Friday.

Mr Ugwu who is the graduate in the institution to hold the position, explained the importance of regularisation and why the management is taking the exercise seriously.

“It is very important for you to understand what regularization is; if you’re a staff of the University and you are not regularised, if anything happens to you, you are not known (in the system), that is the essence of it. Regularisation is where you bring your documents after staying for a year or two, because anything you have is temporal appointment. Until you are regularised and confirmed, you can only have the rights and privileges of a staff when you’re regularised, that is the essence of regularisation.

“If you retire today, and you go to the ministry for payment of your gratuity, they will ask you, ‘are you a regularised staff?’ If you are not regularised, they don’t have any obligation where you are. So, it is very important and many of us do not understand what it means. I thank God for the type of Vice-Chancellor the University have within this period, because he’s a man that knows the rules. He knows what it means to be regularised, that is why when he came on board he said staff must be regularised.”

He recalled that the process of the regularisation, it was observed that many Professors, Doctors, Engineers, senior staff have not been regularised. He added that the new management didn’t introduce the exercise stressing that regularisation is part of the rules operating in the civil service system.

“You will be surprised to notice that so many Professors, Associate Professors, Engineers, Doctors, are not regularised. Regularisation is where you present your papers; you claim you’re this, let us see it. After two years then you’re confirmed a staff. So you have to be regularised before being confirmed. It has been in our laws, the only thing is that we didn’t care about it. It was like a battle, ‘how are you telling us to bring our documents after twenty years, thirty years?’ but along the line, so many people started seeing the need,” he concluded.
