Super Eagles Captain, Ahmed Musa has expressed his condolences to the Kano State Government, the Sports Commission and families of the victims of the Saturday auto crash that claimed the lives of 21 athelets and officials.

Kano State contingent to the just concluded 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State were on Saturday involved in a fatal accident on t their way back to Kano. The Accident which happened 50 kilometers away from the Centre of Excellence, claimed the lives of 21 persons including athletes, medical personnel, administrators and journalists

Writing from the Super Eagles camp in Brentford, London where he helped the team to retain the Unity Cup Tournament on Saturday after they beat Jamaica 5-4 on penalties, Musa described the inicdent as a shock and asked God to console the bereaved and heal the injured.

“Extend my heartfelt condolences to the Kano State Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Sports Commission following the tragic auto crash that claimed the lives of 21 individuals from our contingent returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. This devastating loss has left us in shock and grief.

“May Almighty Allah grant the souls of the departed athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and administrators eternal peace and grant their families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and offer my support to the affected families during this difficult time. May Allah comfort us all,” he said.

Initial report clams that 20 person died during the accident but the number has risen to 21 with others in hospital.

No fewer tham 20 athletes and officials of Kano State contingent at the just concluded 2024 National Sports Festival have reportedly lost their lives on their way back from the Ogun Festival on Saturday

It was gathered that the coastal bus conveying the athelets and officials back to Kano crashed about 50 kilometers to the state while on a bridge

It is not clear at press time what caused the fatal accident but videos circulating on social media indicate that the bus might have swerved off the road while on a bridge

The accident happened at Dakatsalle bridge

This paper gathered that a journalist is reported to be among the dead.

The bus was carrying 30 athletes.

Sources told ESUT Monitor  that 20 persons lost their lives in the accident.

As the curtain was drawn in Abeokuta on Thursday following the closing ceremony of the 2024 National Sports Festival, Team Enugu State ended the festival with 16 medals.

The medals comprises one gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze. The feat marked a significant improvement in the team’s participation at the Festival compared to their previous outings.

With 88 athletes, Team Enugu participated in 12 sporting events. However, the para-athletes were the cynosure of eyes as they amassed the medals for the Coal City State

Speaking in an interview, the Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Youths and Sports Enugu State, San Onwuguna said the contingent could have won more gold medals but for technical decisions.

He commended the officials and athletes for their commitment and dedication, stressing that the performance is an eneegiszer ahead of the 2026 edition which will be hosted by the state.

“We could have won more gold medals but the technical officials brought up issues that ensured that the first gold medal we won was withdrawn and we were given silver instead. Nonetheless, I want to commend the athletes and officials for their brave performance. This performance is a tonic ahead of next year’s edition which we are hosting.

“I also want to thank our Governor, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the Commissioner for Youth and Sports for their massive support which led to the medals we won,” he said.

Delta State retained their number one position on the table as the best sporting state in the country. The “Big Heart” State had a total of 337 medals including 126 gold, 100 silver and 111 bronze.

Host Ogun State came second with 238 medals while Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Oyo, Lagos, FCT, Osun and Akwa Ibom States came 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively.

Zamfara and Kebbi States were ranked 37th and 36th with one bronze and two bronze medals, in that order.

Enugu State will host the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival next year.

Enugu State on Sunday continued its medal haul at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State with two athletes winning two silver medals for the Coal, City State.

Emmanuel Ugonna and Destiny Agbo won silver medals each in shot-put men and women, respectively to bring the total number of medals won by Team Enugu to 8.

Shedrack Ozoemena won a bronze medal in the middle weight 70 to 75 kg) Boxing Class.

He defeat Oyo State in quarter-final bout but  lost Silver or Gold medal race to Lagos State whom used 1 points to top Enugu State boxer in bout No: 220  on 25th May 2025  between Enugu State vs  Lagos State for battle of Silver or Gold medal

Chukwuemeka will be competing in the 70-75kg middle weight class where he is hoping to overcome his opponent and win medal for Enugu State.

The up-rising boxer told our reporter in his camp that he is ready for the quarter-final showdown

“I am ready, my target is to reach the semi-final, one game at a time. Of course, I want to win the gold medal which is the ultimate, but to do that, I have to beat my opponents along the line. So reaching semi-final is a major step in actualising the dream.

“I have prepared very well for the festival and I hope to make Enugu State proud,” he said.

Enugu State Team has recorded its first gold medal at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The gold medal was won by Emmanuel Ugonna in the Javelin para-athletics event on Friday. Competing in the F44 in javelin, Ugonna threw a distance of 51.35 meters to win the gold medal. His feat also created a national record as not para-athlete have had such feat before.

In javelin, F44 is a Paralympic class for athletes with moderately affected movement in one or both legs

The gold medal will spur team Enugu athletes to go for more exploits as other games  start at the 22^nd edition of the “Nigerian Olympics”

Team Enugu’s expectation of registering a medal at the onging 22^nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State is high as some of the athletes have progressed into the crucial stages of the boxing event.

Daniel Chukwudubem set the pace after dispatching his oppoenent to book a place in the semi-final of his category while Israel Ogbodo, made history on Thursday by knocking out his opponent in less than 35 seconds of their bout to qualify for the qurter-final in 60kg fight. 

Shedrack Ozoemenam, also reached the quarter-final, after he walkedover his opponent, just as Ayo, also reached the last 8 of his category.

 Meanwhile, Para-athletics, powerlifting and athletics events will all begin today, Friday May 23rd.

As the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State continues to unearth talents and future champions, two bronze medals winner in Weightlifting event, Adamma Dorcas has stated that winning the medals at the Festival will motivate her to aim Higher.

Dorcas who won the two bronze medals in 49kg women category for Team Kano told Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) media that she prepared well for the competition adding that the target was to win Gold.

“I came prepared for the festival. Winning bronze will motivate me to aim and go higher. My target was gold medal but since I didn’t reach that, I will go back and train harder,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to her coaches and the Kano State Weightlifting Association for their support and expressed optimism to upgrade her performance.

“Our Coaches are wonderful. I can’t thank them enough. I wouldn’t say I regret not winning gold but like I said, this is a step towards greater success.”

Dorcas won her bronze medals in snatch with 71kg lift and total with 157kg lift.

The Enugu State contingent to the 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF) will depart the state today to participate in the festival.

The 22^nd edition of “Nigeria’s Olympic” will hold from Friday 16 to Friday 30 May, 2025.

Team Enugu is expected to leave this morning as hostilities begin on Sunday. The team will participate in 12 events which include, athletics, badminton, basketball boxing, handball, football female, judo, tennis, para-athletics, powerlifting, wrestling and swimming.                            

Team Enugu will be aiming to improve on their 26^th position at the Asaba 2022 Festival where the team won 9 medals comprising one gold, one silver and 7 bronze.

The Enugu State Government will offer automatic employment to athletes from the state who win gold medal at the 22^nd edition of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr Lloyd Ekweremadu who disclosed this to newsmen ahead of the Team Enugu’s departure for the festival on Saturday, noted that the gesture is the state governor’s reward system as part of incentive to motivate the athletes to excel.

He thanked the Governor, Peter for releasing funds on time for the athletes adding that silver and bronze winners will also be rewarded

“I want to thank Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his commitment towards sports development in the state and for his interest in the welfare of athletes and officials.

“I am confident that our athletes and officials considering the enabling environment the government provided them, going to the games, they will win laurels and do the State proud.” he said.          

The 22nd edition of National Sports Festival, commenced in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from Friday, 16 to Friday, 30 May, 2025.
