The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) on Friday held its 45th Matriculation Ceremony for newly admitted students in the 2025/2026 academic year with a total of 8696 students being offered admission into the 14 faculties and 78 programmes in the university.

Speaking with journalists to mark the auspicious occasion, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, congratulated the new intakes and said the institution’s newly established Innovation Hub will equip students with practical skills to become employers of labour after graduation.

The VC addressing the students at the Dr Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium

He noted that the National Universities Commission (NUC) recently increased the university’s admission quota to 8,755.

The Vice Chancellor explained that the Innovation Hub, supported by substantial investment from the management, is designed to provide hands-on training and certification in at least three vocational skills for every student. According to him, experiential learning has become a core pillar of scholarship in ESUT, with a new curriculum mandating first-year students to commence their degree projects from 100 level.

He said the initiative aligns with the university’s mission to produce globally competitive graduates capable of utilizing technology for societal development.

Prof. Okolie also highlighted ESUT’s 45-year history, tracing its establishment in 1980 as Anambra State University of Technology by the then civilian governor of old Anambra State, Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The institution was renamed ESUT in 1991 following the creation of Enugu State.

Reiterating the university’s commitment to discipline, the Vice Chancellor warned students against acts such as cultism, examination malpractice, impersonation, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that violations could attract sanctions ranging from rustication to expulsion or prosecution.

Staff Procession during the matriculation

He announced that from the 2025/2026 academic session, all examination results would be uploaded online to enhance transparency and credibility, marking the end of manual result processing. He urged students to complete payment of approved fees and registration within stipulated deadlines to maintain their status as bona fide students.

On academic excellence, Prof. Okolie disclosed that students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above would qualify for scholarships, allowing them to study tuition-free as long as they maintain the required grade.

The Vice Chancellor further commended the Governor of Enugu State and Visitor to the university, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for approving the perimeter fencing of the institution to strengthen campus security. He added that security personnel, including university security, Man-O-War, anti-drug agencies, and the police, are on 24-hour surveillance to ensure a safe learning environment.

He noted improvements in infrastructure, including the provision of solar-powered boreholes, improved electricity supply, renovation of hostels and classrooms, and plans for additional hostel construction.

Prof. Okolie encouraged students to participate in extracurricular activities, revealing that ESUT recently won 13 medals (eight gold, two silver, and three bronze ) at the NUGA Games held at the University of Jos.

He also urged students from their second year to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ease financial burdens on parents and guardians.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the matriculating students and advised them to uphold discipline, focus on academic excellence, and strive to positively impact society upon graduation.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha, who conducted key personnel of the University on matriculation monitoring exercise across 14 faculties of the University, noted that the exercise was seamless.

Some of the matriculants, including the daughter of ESUT Registrar, Ebubechukwu Ugwu; and Favour Mmasichukwu, both of Law faculty, and Kenechukwu Goodluck of Computer Science, expressed happiness over their admission into ESUT and pledged to put in their best to graduate in flying colours.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has expressed concern over what it described as the increasing misuse of honorary doctorate degrees by Nigerian universities.

This was disclosed by the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, during the presentation of the report of an investigation into the “awards and public misuse of Honorary Doctorate degree” in Abuja.

“In response to this disturbing trend, an investigation was carried out by the NUC to examine how these degrees are awarded and used across Nigeria. The findings are deeply concerning,” he said.

He revealed that 61 institutions and bodies are involved in the indiscriminate conferment of such degrees nationwide.

“The report of the investigation identified 32 institutions operating as honorary doctorate degree mills, including 10 unaccredited foreign universities, 4 unlicensed local universities, 15 professional bodies with no degree-awarding powers and 3 other non-degree awarding institutions. It’s even more alarming that some of these institutions go as far as awarding fake professorships,” he said.

He emphasized that the awarding of honorary degrees is a legal responsibility reserved for Nigerian universities, noting that the Education Act empowers the NUC to regulate both the award and use of such degrees. “Hence, the Commission is determined to guide the proper use of honorary degrees, regulate their awards as well as protect the sanctity of our university educational system,” he said.

Ribadu further warned that recipients must avoid using the title “Dr” as part of their names.

“The recipients of the awards are at liberty to use the nomenclature such as Doctor of Literature but must refrain from using the title ‘Dr’ which is the designation of PhD holders and medical personnel. Additionally, they are not permitted to use the honorary doctorate degree to practice as scholars or professionals, supervise research or oversee administrative units,” he said.

The National Universities Commission, NUC has exonerated the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT from malicious report that the first premier science and technology university in Nigeria was operating Satellite Campuses across the country.

The nation’s university regulatory body gave ESUT the clean bill of health in a letter dated August 15, 2024 where the commission commended the efforts of the management of the university in tackling the fake news and expressed its desire to support the institution in tracking down the purveyors of the fabricated news and those using the name of the university to achieve criminal plans.

The letter signed the Acting Director, Open Distance and e-Learning, Dr. Funmilayo Morebise on behalf of the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission and sent to ESUT Registrar, while commending the university management for their proactive measures to arrest the ugly report, advised the management to involve security agencies in tracking down fraudulent individuals who would wish to use the good image of the university to defraud innocent Nigerians.

The letter titled “Re: Fallacious claim of existence and operation of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) satellite campuses across the country” and made available to ESUT Monitor reads:

“I write at the instance of the Ag. Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC) to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 20th June, 2024, with the above subject.

The Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie

“The Commission notes and commends the effort of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) on the steps taken so far to address the fallacious claims of the existence and operations of ESUT Satellite Campuses across the country.

“Consequently, the Commission may wish to advise the University to use the law enforcement agencies to assist in curbing the ugly trend. The Commission is willing to offer all the necessary assistance and support to the University in this regard.

“Furthermore, the University is advised to sustain its effort in informing and alerting the general public on the fallacious claim of existence and operation of ESUT Satellite Campuses across the country.

“Please accept the assurances of the Age Executive Secretary’s highest regards.”

Speaking in an interview, the Registrar of the University, Chief Ambrose Ugwu said that the university some months ago received information about operation of Satellite Campuses bearing ESUT name in some states in the country.

Chief Ugwu mentioned some of the states to include Rivers, Imo, Kogi and Benue. He however noted that the swift response of the management through its alumni associations in the affected states facilitated nipping the ugly incident in the bud.

“The NUC wrote a letter and commended the management for our proactiveness in responding to the malicious claims of ESUT Satellite Campuses across the country. The moment we got wind of such nefarious actions, we immediately set machineries in motion to checkmate the report and we informed the regulatory body of our innocence.

“We are in contact with all our alumni associations across the country to be on red alert so that anywhere we get such fake news from, we will report to the security agency for prompt action,” he said.

The Registrar noted that people are capitalizing on the rising high profile of the university as the best state university in the country to defraud people and advised the general public to always check for authentic information about ESUT by visiting the university’s portal.

There has been unceasing joy and delight in the Department of Nursing Sciences, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT following the granting of full accreditation by the National University Commission, NUC to the department.

Director, Academic Planning, Prof Chike Anibeze who dropped this cheering news in an interview, said the accreditation marks a milestone in the current administration in the university in championing a robust, sustainable full academic programmes in the university.

Prof Anibeze who noted that the accreditation was pursued vigorously by the management since last year, said that since the department came on board about five years ago, the management of the university has been working round the clock to get it accredited.

He explained why the accreditation is most important at this particular time for the department and the university

“Yes, we had the NUC accreditation team in November last year. The nursing students would face their final professional examination soon, and without the full accreditation, the present final year students cannot graduate. The VC (Vice-Chancellor) made a special request, and it was granted that the result of the NUC (National Universities Commission) in nursing was released because without that, accreditation won’t be granted, and we have full accreditation for nursing.

Department of Nursing Sciences Building in Agbani, ESUT Main Campus

“What it means is that Nursing Sciences
Department can now graduate students. There were rigorous steps in the process – they have gone for the initial resource verification, the Nursing Council (their professional body) have also visited, now the NUC has given the final node that we should start graduating nurses.

“When you graduate nurses just like you have in medicine, they can be graduate BSc Nursing but in order to equally assist in their professional development, we now invite the nursing council, they would give them the BSc certifying them as Bachelors in Nursing. It is the nursing council that would give them the professional certificate to practice nursing. The people in the profession council cannot give their own except when the NUC has certified you to be a nurse that’s when you can now practice,” he said

Meanwhile, a 200 level student of the Nursing Sciences Department, Nweze Grace Amarachchukwu has expressed gratitude to the University management and Departmental Board for working assiduously to actualize the accreditation status.

Nweze who expressed delight over the feat said with the full accreditation, the students who have graduated from the department can now go for their firs professional exams

Nweze Grace Amarachchukwu is a 200 level student of the department

“I want to first and foremost thank the university management and the department board for their efforts in getting the accreditation.

“I felt so excited when I heard that Nursing Science ESUT has finally been accredited. It was a thing of joy and gladness because we fought for these accreditation for the past six years.

“The previous student that have graduated have not written any of the professional exams it was really a thing of joy because we followed these accreditation both spiritually and physically. At last, our efforts were not in vain we got a full time accreditation not a temporal one,” she said.

The accreditation of the Nursing Science Department was confirmed on April 25, 2024.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Education has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the activities of 107 private and foreign universities operating in the country.

The investigation became necessary following reported cases of certificate racketeering, management structure deficit, lack of adequate facilities, inadequate funding of programmes, among others by private and foreign universities.

The issue of degree mills, once again came to the centre of discussions in Nigeria, following an investigative report by Daily Nigerian reporter, Umar Audu.

In the report, Audu revealed how he obtained a degree within six weeks and even proceeded to embark on mandatory youth service under the National Youth Service Corps scheme (NYSC).

Members of the panel include the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; the Minister of Youths, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar among others.

One of the committee’s terms of reference stated that private universities established in the last 15 years be investigated.

“Without prejudice to the periodic accreditation exercise of the NUC, examine whether or not private universities established in the last 15 years have in the place prescribed facilities, appropriate management structure, adequate funding of programmes, requisite staff (nature of staff-full time, contract, adjunct, visiting, other types),” the term of reference read.

Already, Nigeria has a total of 147 private universities as listed on the website of the NUC.
