…We Came to Enugu to Win – Boboye

By Amaechi Agbo

Rangers International FC coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has disclosed that his players underrated Akwa United when both teams clashed in Matchday 28 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League on Sunday in Enugu.

Akwa United, 19th on the log faced Rangers who were in 6th position with each team hoping for the three points . Akwa needed the three points to ease their relegation worries while Rangers needed the points to consolidate on their continental push, with the league defence almost over for the Flying Antelopes.

With the match ending 1-1 after Akwa United took the lead in the first half and Rangers equalised during the second half via a spotkick, Coach Ilechukwu described the result as a huge setback while his opposite number, Kennedy Boboye said the visitors came to Enugu to win the match.

“My team, maybe because of Akwa’s position, didn’t put up their best to get first position. It’s unfortunate that what I saw today was not what I expected in the first half. That’s what am feeling. That’s how it is, because we are lucky not to have conceded more than a goal in the first half, and it could have been a bad one.

“Everyone is sad because we had an agreement that this game would take us to the third position but this is a very big setback to the team entirely,” he said.

The coach explained why his experienced striker, Godwin Obaje was benched.

“Obaje had an injury in Kano, and he has not played since he got that injury. I called him and told him that 20 minutes might be enough. The doctors advised that others should start first. That’s what happened; “

On his part, coach Boboye said his wards came to Enugu to win but added that a point on the road will help their course to avoid the drop

“It was a good game. We wanted to come here and win, but it didn’t work out for us. The most important thing is that we have gotten something out of the game. We would choose any point anywhere we step our feet, because of the situation we are in and where we are” he said

Rangers are currently 5th on the log with 42 points while Akwa United have 28 points from 28 games.

Rangers will face Kwara United in their Matchday 29 while Akwa United will also be at home to receive visiting Sunshine Stars with both matches taking place on Sunday, March 16th

Reigning NPFL champions, Rangers International F.C, under the tutelage of coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, is fully set to kickoff it’s title defense as the 2024/2025 NPFL season rolls off with the visit of President Federation Cup champions, El-Kanemi Warriors F.C of Maiduguri who recently crashed out of the second tie, TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2024/2025.

The opening day fixture which will happen inside ‘The Cathedral’, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, takes place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, will be a replica of the title winning match for the Enugu side in the 2015/2016 season where the ‘Antelopes’ flew over the ‘Warriors’ by four un-replied goals in a packed stadium on October 2, 2016.

Having secured the services of some quality legs and hands to take the places of those that departed from the trophy-winning squad, coach Ilechukwu and his trusted lieutenants will be looking to ensure that the new season starts on a flying note even when a stiff resistance is expected from the Maiduguri side that recently gained promotion from the NNL and won the oldest club competition to pick a ticket to represent the country on the continent.

The arrival of such players as, Tekena Garando, Ekeson Okorie, Evans Ogbonda, Hillary Ekawu, Ernest Governor, Okafor Onyekachi, Bashir Usman, Lucky Abdullahi, Chikeluba Ofoedu, Effimi Nsi, Igwilo Chimobi, Williams Wonah, Oforkansi Michael, Ogbonna Anayor, Daniel Onyia, and a host of others to join forces with the reliable, Opubo Japhet, Ugwueze Chinemerem, Opara Austin, Onyebuchi Ifeanyi, Isaac Saviour, Ugochukwu Ejike, Agu Kenechukwu, Kenneth Igboke, Kazeem Ogunleye, Chiedozie Okorie, Stephen Ikenna, Odoh Joel, and many more, fans of Rangers are assured of a quality display when the encounter happens on Saturday.

Rangers Team

Captain of the Coal City side, Ugwueze Chinemerem, in a chat, said that the team was prepared to kick start the new season on a high with the visit of their opponent from Maiduguri, stressing, “I expect a very tough customer in the form of El-Kanemi but with what we have been doing since our qualification for the second preliminary round of CAF Champions League, I see determination, passion and motivation to get a good result and set us on the right track for a successful title defense. We won the title with a young team and this season; we are campaigning with a much younger team that is highly motivated to repeat the feat of last season. Like I said earlier, it would be a tough encounter due largely to the fact that our opponent was recently eliminated from the continent and would come out to ruffle us but we are prepared for them and by God’s grace we shall celebrate at the end of the encounter.”

Shot-stopper and one of the deputy-captains of the squad, Opubo Japhet, who had two assists and twelve clean sheets last season, is optimistic of starting their title defense on a bright note against the ‘Invading Warriors’ from Maiduguri, stressing, “I will say a big thanks to God for the success of last season and for the start of the new season against El-Kanemi Warriors, I am very optimistic going into the match with the caliber of players in our squad. Surely, there are no more underdogs in the game of football hence we expect an open game but we are going for the maximum points at stake.”

The visitors under coach Aliu Zubairu are already in the Coal City as they arrived on Thursday and will have a feel of the playing turf of the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium on Friday for the only match day 1 fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League 2024/2025 with the others taking place between 6-7, September, 2024.

The Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, State, Dr. Peter Mbah, promised that his administration was working towards strengthening and improving subsequent marathons in the state by making it attractive enough for international athletes to participate as a world-class sporting event.

Governor Mbah, who joined in the 21.79km Coal.City half marathon on Saturday, which kicked off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, stated that the event would serve as an opportunity to discover young talents and for all sports lovers as well as the elderly to keep fit and live a healthy lifestyle.

He said his administration was keen on sustaining and consolidating the huge success recorded in this year’s marathon through the right investment in the development of the sports industry in the areas of sporting infrastructure and facilities, adding that the state saw sports as business and source of wealth creation for the people.

“We’re investing hugely in our sports sector, and we’re not only treating sports as leisure or recreation, but we’re also seeing the sports industry as key business. That’s why in addition to quickly returning the pitch, once we came in, to enable Rangers International return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, we just awarded the contract to renovate and overhaul our stadium and bring it to world-class standard.

“You also know that in that sector, we’ve just recently entered a memorandum of understanding to build a world-class entertainment and sports centre and this is all going to reinforce our position in the sports industry,” he added.

While congratulating the participants, who came from over 20 states across the country, the governor stressed that the goal of the event was to promote unity, discipline and cooperation amongst Nigerians, saying in a few years, the state would join the league of world athletics competitions because of the level of investments the administration was committing to the industry.

“What is even more important is the desire of the state to take the Enugu State Marathon event to the next level. In few years, I want you to note that the Enugu State Marathon is going to be part of the world international athletic events. Just as you have the Boston Marathon, the London Marathon, you’ll also have the Enugu Marathon in the international athletics calendar,” he added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr Lloyd Ekweremadu, explained that part of the goals of the marathon was to continue to foster the culture of sports and fitness, which engenders healthy development.

He expressed satisfaction over the success of the event, saying participants from other states were happy about the hospitality and the excellent works the governor was doing in the state through his infrastructural drive.

Commending the Zenith Bank PLC for partnering with the State Ministry of Youth and Sports, the commissioner maintained that this year’s event couldn’t have been possible without the support of the governor, community patrons, and other businesses.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of prizes to the winners of this year’s Marathon. Francis James, Israel Sadjo, and Nenfort Mathias clinched the sum of ₦1,000,000, ₦500,000 and ₦300,000 as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places respectively in the male category, while Patience Dahyop, Agofurb Charity and Munitikat Emmanuel also clinched the same amounts as the winner, 1st and 2nd runners up, respectively, in the female category

Seven-time Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL champions, Rangers International FC of Enugu have been approved to play their home matches of the ongoing league season at their home ground, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu by the League organisers following the completion of renovation work on the pitch.

The Flying Antelopes first home match on their home ground is against fellow traditional club side, Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan on Thursday. The match will kick-off by 4pm.

The General Manager, Rangers, Mr Amobi Ezeaku confirmed Rangers return to the Cathedral in a press briefing.

Speaking to the sports press in Enugu, the GM said “We are back to the Cathedral not just to play against Shooting Stars on the 28, we have returned to the Cathedral.”

Rangers last played a home match at the Cathedral in 2021 before the renovation work commenced in October same year.

More than two years after, with the club playing its home matches away in Awka, the Anambra State capital, the 2016 NPFL champions are back to their home ground and Mr Ezeaku explained what the home return means to the club and fans.

Rangers fans adorning the new jerseys at the stadium on Friday last week

“To those who understand the atmosphere of the Cathedral, is a place we love to chant, it’s a place we enjoy the atmosphere in the day and night. It’s a place we tap the round leather, and we love it, not just because we play the game; we love it because of those behind us, the fans of this club, and we have to say that we are grateful to those fans who followed us to Nnewi when we started, from Nnewi to Awka.

“We are grateful to the Football Association of Anambra State, for their undying zeal and support, their effort to see that the flag of this great club keeps flying. Special thanks also to the Governor of Anambra State and to the Anambra State Football Association Chairman, General Chikelue, who made sure that every logistics for playing at the Awka Township Stadium was provided. It was over two years of great difficulty playing, we understand that the stadiums in the five South-Eastern states are home to Rangers, but then there is a place the umbilical cord of this club is buried, and that is at the Cathedral here in Enugu, in other words, we have a home in Awka, we have a home in Umuahia Abia State, we have a home in Ebonyi,

“We have a home in Imo State, but ultimately, the umbilical cord is buried here, in fact Enugu is the capital of all the states in the South-Eastern region, so we are grateful to the supporters who followed this club.

Rangers last won the league in 2016

“Even those who followed from their homes, and now we are back, on the 28 of December we invite you, everyone to come to the stadium to support this great club. Few days ago we came back from Aba, and you all know the result, before the game we had won Sporting Lagos 2:0 in Awka, we couldn’t be where we are today without the support of our fans, and ultimately, the media who report these games to the people who do not attend.” he said.

He recognized the impact of the press in the reportage of Rangers activities and called for more support from everyone connected to Rangers.

“We couldn’t be celebrating without the impact of the press, we celebrate you, we say thank you and now that we are back, we call for more support. We call for more commitment, deeper commitment to the philosophy that we’ve outlined, to the insignia of this club, to the badge of this club. We call for deeper respect for the history of this club, Rangers, because it is this club that symbolizes the true movement that we adore, and now that we’re back, the Cathedral has been sanctified.

“Our Cathedral must be protected, must not be desecrated, the players understand what is at stake. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and his technical crew understand what is at stake, this management understand what is at stake; the State Government, the Governor of this State swore that Rangers will be back, and we’re back. We don’t take it for granted, so we want to stretch ourselves beyond limits, not just for Rangers but for the growth of football in this State,” he concluded.

“We will not forget the commitment of the Enugu State Football Association when we were playing away from Enugu. We will not forget the support from everyone, the board members of Enugu Football Association, we will not forget the SWAN, the Police, the security agencies, who have afforded this team so much protection whenever we travel to play, and come back.

“And now dear friends, it’s December, we’re playing a game just three days after Christmas, what other Christmas gift could the fans have asked for other than to see a game in the year 2023, and to be welcomed into the New Year with the hope that there will be more games at the Cathedral.”

“The Governor is going to pay for the tickets on the 28th for our fans who will come to watch the game at the Cathedral. In other words, the gate is thrown open at the behest of Dr Peter Mbah, just for the game on the 28th of December.

“He said, ‘if the fans has waited for two years, Rangers should at least give them an open gate.’ We said we don’t have money and then he promised he’ll pay for the tickets. So when you see my boss you’ll thank him for paying for the tickets.” he said.

The former Team manager of the club appealed to the fans to paint the stadium in red and white jersey in the game.

“The gate of the Cathedral for the game against Shooting Stars has be thrown open, but we want to add, make the Cathedral colorful, go and buy your Rangers jersey, come to the Cathedral on the 28th on either white or red jersey, let’s color the Cathedral.”
