In its efforts to flush out bad eggs and ensure sanctity in the system, the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and grand move has expelled five students and suspended 70 others over various offences.

The University Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu who dropped the hint on Wednesday said the students were found wanting in breaching the school regulations.

Although Mr Ugwu didn’t disclose the names of the affected students, he added that the five students were expelled for their involvement in examination infractions

Mr Ugwu disclosed this during the 45th ESUT Matriculation Orientation Programme for new students held at the Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium on Wednesday, February 18.

“As the University Registrar, I have multiplicity of roles – I am the Secretary to the Council, Secretary to the Senate among others. I am also secretary to your suspension and expulsion letters” he said light-heartedly.

“However, let me inform you that on 10th December last year, I handed over 75 letters of suspension and expulsion to students who committed various act of contraventions. Among the 75 affected students, 5 were expelled.

“The five students were expelled due to impersonation. Either someone impersonated to write exams for them or they impersonated and wrote exams for people and they were caught. Some of them are in their final year while others were in 3rd year” he said.

The Registrar warned the new students t avoid acts capable of cutting short their programmes prematurely  and urged them to remain good ambassadors of their parents, families and the school.

Students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT have been advised to shun cultism, instead pursue academic excellence.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie handed the warning on Thursday during the orientation programme for new students in the Faculty of Engineering held at the Professor Julius Onah Auditorium

Conveying the VC’s message, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Thomspson Chime, who stood-in for the VC, warned the students on the dangers of involving in anti-social behaviour while in the university and urged them to be good ambassadors of their parents and communities.

During the orientation

“Today, you have gained admission into ESUT, your dream university to study your preferred courses in Faculty of Engineering. All of you went through challenges to be here and now that you are here, I want to advise you to stay away from bad friends. They will lead you astray. Don’t join cult, stay away from people that would influence you negatively. Stay focused on what you have come here to achieve, academic excellence. If you remain on the path of the university rules, you will not have issues with the management but once you decide to do otherwise, we will come after you

“I want you to be good ambassadors of your respective families and communities. Make them proud by pursuing academic excellence,” the VC admonished.

Delivering a lecture on the topic: “Understanding the Faculty and Building Academic Excellence”, the Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Mgbachi Cyprian advised the new students to take their academics seriously.

Professor Mgbachi who described an engineer and as a “solution provider” further explained the importance of engineering courses to humanity

“The university is like an ocean without a compass, you are bound to miss your location if not properly guided. That is the essence of this orientation and you are welcome to the faculty.

“Engineers are the people who make things happen in our society, they provide solutions to our problems, they are the reason we live today,” he said.

He further stressed that engineers should participate in politics to provide good leadership in the country. “Engineers don’t have time for politics. If we can polish our works with politics, we will have good leaders.”

Speaking on “Examination, Integrity and Responsible Student Conduct,” former Head of Department of Chemical Engineering, Professor Benson Udeh, cautioned the students against examination malpractice. While reeling out some of the examination offences in the school such as impersonation, cheating during examination, entering examination hall with mobile phone, among others, Professor Udeh warned “Do not go to examination hall late. Lateness to examination hall is the first symptom of malpractice. You are expected to be in your examination hall at least 30 minutes before the time. If you arrive to an examination hall 30minutes late, the university rule says you will not write the exam.

“And when you are caught in malpractice such as impersonation, it is immediate expulsion. If you are found with a phone inside examination hall, it attracts two years suspension. As a father and your teacher, I don’t want any of you to be either expelled or suspended. We want you all to graduate at the end of the stipulated time for your stay here,” he said.

In her goodwill message, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ifeoma Okwo while commending the faculty for being the pacesetter in hosting the first orientation programme for new students, urged the fresh students to imbibe the virtue of probity to achieve academic excellence.

The Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Command has charged students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT to shun cultism, social vices as well as academic and life carryovers while pursuing their academic endeavours

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Enugu command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the charge while delivering a speech on the 2023/2024 ESUT Orientation Programm for first year students on Wednesday.

Speaking during the programme held at the prestigious Prof Julius Onah Auditorium, DSP Ndukwe admonished the year one students to define their focus and remain resolute in actualizing their educational aspiration.

He advised the students to shun every act capable of making them to stray away from the purpose for which they were in the institution and warned that no act of crime and criminality would go unpunished.

“Beyond academic, you are here to learn many things and it is in the process of learning that alot happen. Be contended with what you have.

“I am interested in what you do and how you go about the opportunities you have here. There are challenges but I urge you to be contended with what you have, don’t live fake life. Don’t measure with anybody. The competition in life is between you and yourself.

“There is no hidding place for criminals. You can get away with it but we usually say ’99 days for the thief and one day for the owner of the house’ you may run for long but when we catch you, we will bring both heaven and hell fire judgment on your head.

A section of year one students during the orientation programme on Wednesday

“One thing I want to remind you is that most time people that will lead you into cultism will come in a very soft manner. They don’t use force anymore. The time they were using force has gone. Today it could be one sweet guy who is your friend, who have been relating with you and he has been extending good manners to you, buying things and the rest of them. Eventually, when you have enjoyed so much from him or her, to say no to their request becomes difficult.

“You must begin to learn, choose your friends. You will help us to police you better. Know where you go. I am not saying you should not enjoy life but know the limit and extent you can enjoy. I encourage you, shun cultism, don’t allow anybody to force or lure you into it, shun social vices. Don’t learn those things that will end up breaking you forever,” he said.

The orientation programme marked the commencement of activities marking the 43rd Matriculation Ceremony of the University which holds on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Over 5000 students have been offered admission to study various courses in the institution for the current academic session.
