The Police Public Relations Officer (PPPRO), Enugu State Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Daniel Ndukwe, warns student leaders against social vices.

He gave this warning on Friday at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Summit in Enugu State.

He stated that the first type of leadership is self-disciplining. “You cannot lead others if you cannot lead yourself, whether you like it or not. No matter how fantastic your thinking is, if it is not coming from you, you can never lead anybody.

“As leaders of students, you have a lot of roles and responsibilities in security. Security is everyone’s business. As a leader, you should be security-wise. I love what you do in the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), where one of the criteria is that cultists are not meant to lead.

“I’m delighted with the kind of summit we’re having here, focusing on security, career leadership, and employability. Whatever you will become in life starts today, and what has not begun has not started ending. The moment you have the freedom to become a leader, your status changes,” he said

He emphasized that student leaders should be responsible, for the office they occupy and the people who look up to them stressing that security will always be everyone’s business, especially those in leadership.

He expressed the importance of being security-wise, citing his office as a police officer, “that if you don’t police yourself very well, you’ll have a bad status in public. What are you doing in your beautiful corner? When you talk to students as a leader, what do you tell them? Do you advise them against cultism, drug abuse, and substances? Security and good attitude are essential. Attitude, whether you like it or not, will have a carryover in any office if humility is not involved.

“I encourage students as leaders to build their capacity so that they can be entrusted with higher responsibilities. I cite the example of the emeritus National Association of Nigerian Students chairman, who was appointed as Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs because of her good leadership impact while in office.

“I came here deliberately with the Chairman of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Social Vices (POCACOV), Comrade Samuel Ejike. As leaders of students, please lead by example, lead responsibly, and avoid social vices. Sometimes, the issues you may face while in office will push you to take actions you may not like to take.

“Find reasons to do what’s good because you’ll make sacrifices as a leader. Please don’t keep any issues to yourself; make social media your friend, but don’t allow social media to make you a friend because automatically, you’ll lose there.

“Post responsibly and share responsibly on social media. The most significant problem we’re having is that some of us don’t know how to use social media handles very well. If there’s a security challenge, please let the appropriate authorities know.

“As a leader, you should have a thinking ability. If everyone should take everything, don’t take everything. I encourage you as leaders of universities to make security a top priority. As a leader, it will continue to live with you, and in open and public spaces, take responsibility, do what you can do, know things, avoid social vices, and don’t be carried away,” he advised.

Gunmen have abducted no fewer than 11 passengers at the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway.

Some of the abductees are believed to be returning students of tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State.

Daily Sun gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday as they travelled in a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

Their bus was intercepted by the hoodlums at the notorious Amechi-Idodo area in Nkanu East Local Government Area which had been turned into a kidnappers’ den recently.

It could not be confirmed whether the Enugu State Police Command knew about the incident.

But, a family member of one of the victims said the kidnappers established communication with them today and were asking for N30 million ransom.

Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, a deputy superintendent of police, recently disclosed that the Enugu State Police Command was working assiduously towards flushing out the hoodlums.

He said that the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, had reached out to her Enugu counterpart, Kanayo Uzuegbu, over the increasing kidnap cases in that axis of the highway.

Enugu Governor, Peter Mbah few weeks ago ordered the security agencies to flush out the hoodlums.

The Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Command has charged students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT to shun cultism, social vices as well as academic and life carryovers while pursuing their academic endeavours

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Enugu command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the charge while delivering a speech on the 2023/2024 ESUT Orientation Programm for first year students on Wednesday.

Speaking during the programme held at the prestigious Prof Julius Onah Auditorium, DSP Ndukwe admonished the year one students to define their focus and remain resolute in actualizing their educational aspiration.

He advised the students to shun every act capable of making them to stray away from the purpose for which they were in the institution and warned that no act of crime and criminality would go unpunished.

“Beyond academic, you are here to learn many things and it is in the process of learning that alot happen. Be contended with what you have.

“I am interested in what you do and how you go about the opportunities you have here. There are challenges but I urge you to be contended with what you have, don’t live fake life. Don’t measure with anybody. The competition in life is between you and yourself.

“There is no hidding place for criminals. You can get away with it but we usually say ’99 days for the thief and one day for the owner of the house’ you may run for long but when we catch you, we will bring both heaven and hell fire judgment on your head.

“One thing I want to remind you is that most time people that will lead you into cultism will come in a very soft manner. They don’t use force anymore. The time they were using force has gone. Today it could be one sweet guy who is your friend, who have been relating with you and he has been extending good manners to you, buying things and the rest of them. Eventually, when you have enjoyed so much from him or her, to say no to their request becomes difficult.

“You must begin to learn, choose your friends. You will help us to police you better. Know where you go. I am not saying you should not enjoy life but know the limit and extent you can enjoy. I encourage you, shun cultism, don’t allow anybody to force or lure you into it, shun social vices. Don’t learn those things that will end up breaking you forever,” he said.

The orientation programme marked the commencement of activities marking the 43rd Matriculation Ceremony of the University which holds on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Over 5000 students have been offered admission to study various courses in the institution for the current academic session.
