Enugu State Police Command has warned students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) against cultism, drug abuse and other social vices, urging them to embrace responsible leadership and become positive ambassadors of the institution.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, gave the charge on Thursday while delivering a keynote lecture titled, “Choices, Character and Consequences: Confronting Cultism and Other Social Vices on Campus,” during the inauguration of the newly elected ESUT Students’ Union Government (SUG) executive.

Congratulating the new student leaders, Ndukwe described their emergence as a call to selfless service, stressing that leadership is defined by influence, responsibility and exemplary conduct.

He urged the SUG executives to promote peace, unity, discipline and academic excellence while working closely with the university management and security agencies to tackle cultism, drug abuse and other criminal activities on campus.

Addressing the students, the police spokesperson said every undergraduate begins university with dreams of success, but those aspirations are shaped by the choices they make.

He warned that cultism, examination malpractice, cybercrime, drug abuse and other social vices, often presented as shortcuts to success, ultimately result in academic failure, damaged reputations, criminal prosecution and, in some cases, loss of lives and promising careers.

Ndukwe advised students to choose their friends wisely, resist peer pressure and uphold integrity, reminding them that “today’s choices become tomorrow’s consequences.”

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command under Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa to sustaining its partnership with ESUT in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.

The police spokesman further encouraged students to remain vigilant, obey the law and promptly report suspicious persons or criminal activities within and around the university community.

The inauguration ceremony was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, and was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Chike Nwoha, the Provost, Registrar, University Librarian, Dean of Students Affairs, other principal officers, former SUG leaders and students.

The Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Command has charged students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT to shun cultism, social vices as well as academic and life carryovers while pursuing their academic endeavours

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Enugu command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the charge while delivering a speech on the 2023/2024 ESUT Orientation Programm for first year students on Wednesday.

Speaking during the programme held at the prestigious Prof Julius Onah Auditorium, DSP Ndukwe admonished the year one students to define their focus and remain resolute in actualizing their educational aspiration.

He advised the students to shun every act capable of making them to stray away from the purpose for which they were in the institution and warned that no act of crime and criminality would go unpunished.

“Beyond academic, you are here to learn many things and it is in the process of learning that alot happen. Be contended with what you have.

“I am interested in what you do and how you go about the opportunities you have here. There are challenges but I urge you to be contended with what you have, don’t live fake life. Don’t measure with anybody. The competition in life is between you and yourself.

“There is no hidding place for criminals. You can get away with it but we usually say ’99 days for the thief and one day for the owner of the house’ you may run for long but when we catch you, we will bring both heaven and hell fire judgment on your head.

“One thing I want to remind you is that most time people that will lead you into cultism will come in a very soft manner. They don’t use force anymore. The time they were using force has gone. Today it could be one sweet guy who is your friend, who have been relating with you and he has been extending good manners to you, buying things and the rest of them. Eventually, when you have enjoyed so much from him or her, to say no to their request becomes difficult.

“You must begin to learn, choose your friends. You will help us to police you better. Know where you go. I am not saying you should not enjoy life but know the limit and extent you can enjoy. I encourage you, shun cultism, don’t allow anybody to force or lure you into it, shun social vices. Don’t learn those things that will end up breaking you forever,” he said.

The orientation programme marked the commencement of activities marking the 43rd Matriculation Ceremony of the University which holds on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Over 5000 students have been offered admission to study various courses in the institution for the current academic session.
