Ahead of the August 7 PDP primary elections for councilorship positions in Enugu State, stakeholders in Ogbozarra Opi Community have endorsed Hon. Nnaemeka Eze, for a second term for Ịdị/Ogbozarra Ward.

The stakeholders made the endorsement on Sunday in Enugu.

The Stakeholders meeting was held under the auspices of the Honourable member representing Nsukka East Constituency at the Enugu State House of Assembly, Dr Pius Onyekachi Ezugwu.

The meeting which was attended by prominent members of the Ogbozarra Community including the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Charles Eze; Ogbozarra Community Town Union President-General, Mr Amechi Isiani; Barr Mrs Christiana Onah (PDP’s Candidate in 2023 Enugu State House of Assembly Election); Former Secretary, Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon Nnamdi Onyeke, among others, unanimously agreed that Hon Eze has done well in his first term to deserve a second ticket.

In his opening remarks, Hon Dr Pius Ezugwu thanked the group for their time and informed them that the purpose of the meeting was to assess the performance of the immediate past Councilor representing Ịdị/Ogbozarra Ward at the Nsukka Local Government Legislative House and ascertain if he deserved a second term.

Hon Nnaemeka Eze Received Ogbozarra Community Endorsement for 2nd term in office

In his speech, Prof Eze noted that having watched Hon Eze’s trajectory, that it was in the best interest of the community to support him to return to the Nsukka Local Government Legislative Arm.

The former Vice-Chancellor noted that it is necessary to rally round Hon Eze who, according to him, has been a “unifying factor” in the community.

The Stakeholders further added that the endorsement of Hon Eze’s for the Councilorship election was a collective decision of Ogbozarra community people and urged any interested individual for the position to shield such.

Prof Eze said that the decision was not political rather based on the common interest of the community adding that all political parties in the community should align with the stakeholders decision to move the community forward.

“The endorsement today is very critical and with this we are saying that all other political parties should align themselves with this decision. This decision is not politically motivated rather it was borne out of the need to promote and protect our interest.

Elections in Ogbozarra Community are always peaceful

“Hon Eze has done well in his first tenure and it is proper that we give him the second chance to consolidate on the good things he has been doing,”.

On how the community would carry Idi Community along since both share the same ward, Prof Eze explained: “There is an understanding in the Ward that a councilor, irrespective of where he or she comes from, will go for a second term, if such a person has performed. So in this case, we still have the mandate. What we will do, arising from this meeting, is to issue a communique backed with the names and signatures of those in this meeting and take it to our people in Ịdị and explain our choice to them. It is not a big deal,” he concluded.

On his part, Hon Nnaemeka Eze, Popularly known as Bravo, expressed appreciation to the stakeholders for the honour done him and promised not to disappoint the community.

“I am not going to make a long speech. Rather I want to express my thankfulness to our great community for this honour. I am challenged, once again, and twice I will not fail,” he concluded

Others in attendance during the meeting are: Mr Edeji Abonyi, Dr Bernardine Ezugwu, Mr Nnamdi Agbo, Dr Edith Eze, Dr Obinna Abonyi, among others.

The 2024 Local Council elections in Enugu State will hold on October 5 across all the 17 local governments.

In 2021, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, had over one hundred new staff in their employment.

The number did not only add to the wealth of staff in the institution but has also upgraded the productive output. The staff didn’t only integrate into the system but they are part of the core wheels that have continued to reshape the fortunes of ESUT.

Speaking in an exclusive interview in his office in Enugu, the man under whose administration the appointments of over 120 staff into various programmes, Professor Charles Eze, explained the rationale the management approved the intake of such number of new staff adding that the need for more hands in some departments particularly as a prerequisite for accreditation made the recruitment inevitable.

“When we came on board, we met a situation where in many departments, we had shortage of staff both in academic and some administrative positions. It came about at a time we needed to do accreditations in many programmes. One of the prerequisites for passing accreditation is that you must have the right calibre of academic staff and other supporting staff in the right numbers. Without these requirements, you are likely to fail the accreditation.

“There are procedures for employment, so we applied and got the approval of the Council to employ the calibre of staff we needed to put in place in those programmes that were due for accreditation. Council graciously gave her kind approval and we went about the employment.

“We employed not less than a hundred and twenty staff, both academic and non-teaching. As I speak, those people we employed are doing excellently well in the various departments. In terms of staff welfare, they were well paid as and when due,” Professor Eze explained.

Between the years 2020 and April 2023, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, had a total of 77 lecturers promoted to either the rank of Professors or Associate Professors.

The Immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Eze disclosed this in an interview with ESUT Monitor.

According to the breakdown by the former Vice Chancellor, he explained that a total of 35 Readers were promoted to the rank of Professors while 42 other got promoted to the positions of Association Professors.

“There are stages in the process of appraisal and promotion and we saw a situation where most academic staff had passed through all the stages. The ones left were to be performed by the Vice Chancellor. Their creative output were domiciled in the Vice Chancellor’s office not sent to external accessors, so that was part of my major assignment.

Professor Charles Eze was the Acting Vice-Chancellor from May 2020 to April 2023

“For many of them whose papers came back, they were positive and we had to proceed to the next stage which was University appraisal committee. That was what we did and when we did the two appraisals, the promotions that were released, we had not less than 35 people promoted to Professors then about 40 to 42 Associate Professors.

“That should be counted as an achievement because there is nothing as good as enabling people to grow as they are rendering their services. If one realises that he has given his best and is due for promotion to the next position and for no fault of his, he is still stagnated on a particular position, I think such person’s productivity will be greatly hampered.  He will not be motivated to give you his best because the conclusion is that the system is not encouraging you to grow so why should I give my best?

The former Acting VC expressed delight that his successor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie is continuing in the similar trajectory

“I saw it as a strategy we can deploy to improve on the productivity of the academic staff and it actually yielded the desired dividends. The lecturers are all up and doing. Having attained the zenith of their careers, a good number of them and those that were made Associate Professors, the current administration under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Okolie has also moved them to the rank of Professors. We all read the report of the newly promoted Professors and readers in ESUT Monitor. We have enough Professors in virtually all the departments.”
